Removal of Pb (II) and V (V) from aqueous solution by glutaraldehyde crosslinked chitosan and nanocomposites

A Sunlight-Driven Self-Cleaning CuCo-MOF Composite Membrane for Highly Efficient Emulsion Separation and Water Purification

The fouling phenomenon of membranes has hindered the rapid development of separation technology in wastewater treatment. The integration of materials into membranes with both excellent separation performance and self-cleaning properties still pose challenges. Here, a self-assembled composite membrane with solar-driven self-cleaning performance is reported for the treatment of complex oil-water emulsions. The mechanical robustness of the composite membrane is enhanced by the electrostatic attraction between chitosan and metal-organic frameworks (MOF) CuCo-HHTP as well as the crosslinking effect of glutaraldehyde. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations also revealed the hydrogen bonding interaction between chitosan and CuCo-HHTP. The composite membrane of CuCo-HHTP-5@CS/MPVDF exhibits a high flux ranging from 700.6 to 2350.6 L∙m-2∙h-1∙bar-1 and excellent separation efficiency (>99.0%) for various oil-water emulsions, including crude oil, kerosene, and other light oils. The addition of CuCo-HHTP shows remarkable photothermal effects, thus demonstrating excellent solar-driven self-cleaning capability and antibacterial performance (with an efficiency of ≈100%). Furthermore, CuCo-HHTP-5@CS/MPVDF can activate peroxomonosulfate (PMS) under sunlight, quickly removing oil-fouling and dyes. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the bimetallic sites of Cu and Co in CuCo-HHTP effectively promoted the activation of PMS. This study provides distinctive insights into the multifaceted applications of MOFs-derived photothermal anti-fouling composite membranes.

Green synthesis of chitosan/glutamic acid/agarose/Ag nanocomposite hydrogel as a new platform for colorimetric detection of Cu ions and reduction of 4-nitrophenol

In this study, the green synthesis of chitosan/glutamic acid/agarose/Ag (Chi/GA/Aga/Ag) nanocomposite hydrogel was obtained via in situ reduction of Ag ions during the crosslinking process of chitosan-agarose double network hydrogels. The rich hydroxyl, carboxyl and amino groups in both agarose, chitosan, and glutamic acid can effectively control the growth, dispersion and immobilization of nearly spherical Ag nanoparticles (70 nm) in the Chi/GA/Aga/Ag composite hydrogel. Glutamic acids can act as the structure-directing agents to induce the formation of chitosan/glutamic acid hydrogel. The mechanical strength of the Chi/GA/Aga/Ag composite hydrogel can be enhanced by the introduction of chitosan-agarose double network hydrogels, which guarantees that it can be directly used as a visual test strip of the Cu ions with a lower detection limit of 1 μM and an active catalyst for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol within 18 min. The quantitative and semi-quantitative measurement of Cu ions can be carried out by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and visual measurement, which provided a convenient, portable, and "naked-eye" solid-state detection methodology.

Efficient treatment of palladium from wastewater by acrolein cross-linked chitosan hydrogels: Adsorption, kinetics, and mechanisms

Herein we present a study on the preparation and properties of a hydrogel adsorbent for treatment of wasted palladium souring from actial petrochemical industrial wastewater. Chitosan was used as the raw material and acrolein as the cross-linking agent for the hydrogel (A/CS). The adsorption behaviors of the hydrogel for Pd(II) ions were characterized and analyzed. The effect of pH, temperature, adsorption kinetics, and thermodynamics were investigated. Langmuir models were employed to describe the adsorption isotherms, while the pseudo-second-order equation was applied to describe the adsorption kinetics. The experimental results demonstrated that the adsorption was a monolayer chemical adsorption, and the adsorption capacity was found to reach 505.05 mg/g under optimal conditions. In addition, FT-IR and XPS analyses, combined with MS calculations confirmed that chelation and electrostatic attraction were dominated in the adsorption process. Overall, the development of this hydrogel adsorbent will provide a practical approach to the treatment of industrial wastewater containing palladium and have great potential for practical applications.

Recent advances in removal of inorganic anions from water by chitosan-based composites: A comprehensive review

Chitosan is a modified natural carbohydrate polymer that has been found in the exoskeletons of crustaceans (e.g., lobsters, shrimps, krill, barnacles, crayfish, etc.), mollusks (octopus, oysters, squids, snails), algae (diatoms, brown algae, green algae), insects (silkworms, beetles, scorpions), and the cell walls of fungi (such as Ascomycetes, Basidiomycetes, and Phycomycetes; for example, Aspergillus niger and Penicillium notatum). However, it is mostly acquired from marine crustaceans such as shrimp shells. Chitosan-based composites often present superior chemical, physical, and mechanical properties compared to single chitosan by incorporating the benefits of both counterparts in the nanocomposites. The tunable surface chemistry, abundant surface-active sites, facilitation synthesize and functionalization, good recyclability, and economic viability make the chitosan-based materials potential adsorbents for effective and fast removal of a broad range of inorganic anions. This article reviews the different types of inorganic anions and their effects on the environment and human health. The development of the chitosan-based composites synthesis, the various parameters like initial concentration, pH, adsorbent dosage, temperature, the mechanism of adsorption, and regeneration of adsorbents are discussed in detail. Finally, the prospects and technical challenges are emphasized to improve the performance of chitosan-based composites in actual applications on a pilot or industrial scale.

Selective adsorption of organic dyes from aqueous environment using fermented maize extract-enhanced graphene oxide-durian shell derived activated carbon composite

A secure aquatic environment is essential for both aquatic and terrestrial life. However, rising populations and the industrial revolution have had a significant impact on the quality of the water environment. Despite the implementation of strong and adapted environmental policies for water treatment worldwide, the issue of organic dyes in wastewater remains challenging. Thus, this study aimed to develop an efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable material to treat methylene blue (MB) in an aqueous environment. In this research, maize extract solution (MES) was utilized as a green cross-linker to induce precipitation, conjugation, and enhance the adsorption performance of graphene oxide (GO) cross-linked with durian shell activated carbon (DSAC), resulting in the formation of a GO@DSAC composite. The composite was investigated for its adsorptive performance toward MB in aqueous media. The physicochemical characterization demonstrated that the cross-linking method significantly influenced the porous structure and surface chemistry of GO@DSAC. BET analysis revealed that the GO@DSAC exhibited dominant mesopores with a surface area of 803.67 m2/g. EDX and XPS measurements confirmed the successful cross-linking of GO with DSAC. The adsorption experiments were well described by the Harkin-Jura model and they followed pseudo-second order kinetics. The maximum adsorption capacity reached 666.67 mg/g at 318 K. Thermodynamic evaluation indicated a spontaneous, feasible, and endothermic in nature. Regenerability and reusability investigations demonstrated that the GO@DSAC composite could be reused for up to 10 desorption-adsorption cycles with a removal efficiency of 81.78%. The selective adsorptive performance of GO@DSAC was examined in a binary system containing Rhodamine B (RhB) and methylene orange (MO). The results showed a separation efficiency (α) of 98.89% for MB/MO and 93.66% for MB/RhB mixtures, underscoring outstanding separation capabilities of the GO@DSAC composite. Overall, the GO@DSAC composite displayed promising potential for the effective removal of cationic dyes from wastewater.

Highly efficient removal of Pb2+ from wastewater by a maleic anhydride modified organic porous adsorbent

Sorption is prominent in low price, high efficiency, availability, and eco-friendliness. Organic porous materials have the characteristics of easy functionalization, diverse structure and stability, and show great potential in adsorption, energy storage, catalysis, and other fields. A mesoporous phenolic resin-type polymer (PRP) was successfully synthesized and modified by solid state reaction with maleic anhydride to prepare adsorbent (called as PRP-MAH) for sorption of Pb²⁺. The impact of reaction conditions (the pH value, reaction temperature, fresh concentration of solution, ionic strength and reaction time, etc.) was systematically studied. Characterization methods such as SEM, FTIR, and XPS indicated that the synthesized adsorbent PRP-MAH had regular morphology and good stability. The fitting of isothermal adsorption experiment data conforms to Langmuir sorption isotherm, and the sorption capacity reached 366.40 mg·g^-1 at 308 K. The kinetic data were consistent with the quasi-second-order model, which indicated that the chemisorption might play the main role in the sorption process. Thermodynamic research manifested that the sorption of Pb²⁺ by PRP-MAH was carried out by a spontaneous process at the study temperature. The studies show that PRP-MAH can remove Pb²⁺ from water solution through ion exchange, electrostatic attraction, and surface complexation.

Facile solvent-free radical polymerization to prepare itaconate-functionalized hydrochar for efficient sorption of methylene blue and Pb(II)

An itaconate-functionalized hydrochar (IFHC) was prepared from one-step solvent-free radical copolymerization of bamboo hydrochar, itaconic acid, ammonium persulphate and sodium hydroxide in solvent-free environment, and was employed to absorb methylene blue (MB) and Pb(II) from wastewater. Characterizations show IFHC has rich carboxylate and tends to adsorb cationic contaminants. The largest adsorbed quantities of MB and Pb(II) by IFHC are up to 1036 and 291.8 mg·g^-1 at 298 K respectively as per the Langmuir isotherm. Sorption of MB and Pb(II) onto IFHC can be expressed well by Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-2nd-order kinetics equations. The high sorption performance depends on the rich carboxylate, which can adsorb MB/Pb(II) through an electrostatic interaction/inner-surface complexation mechanism. The sorptive capacity of regenerated IFHC decreased below 10% after 5 desorption-resorption cycles. Thus, the solvent-free free radical copolymerization is an environmentally-friendly strategy to synthesize novel efficient sorbents that can clean cationic contaminants from wastewater.

ROS-sensitive Crocin-loaded chitosan microspheres for lung targeting and attenuation of radiation-induced lung injury

Radiation-induced lung injury (RILI) is one of the major complications in patients exposed to accidental radiation and radiotherapy for thoracic malignancies. However, there is no reliable radioprotector for effective clinical treatment of RILI so far. Herein, a novel Crocin-loaded chitosan microsphere is developed for lung targeting and attenuation of RILI. The chitosan microspheres are modified with 4-carboxyphenylboronic acid and loaded with the natural antioxidant Crocin-I to give the drug-loaded microspheres (~10 μm). The microspheres possess good biocompatibility in vivo and in vitro. In a mouse model, they exhibit effective passive targeting performance and a long retention time in the lung after intravenous administration. Furthermore, they improve the radioprotective effect of Crocin-I for the treatment of RILI by reducing the level of inflammatory cytokines in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and by regulating oxidative stress in lung tissues. The targeted agents significantly improved the bioavailability and radioprotection of Crocin-I by the outstanding passive targeting effect. This work may provide a promising strategy for efficient radioprotection on RILI using passive lung targeting microspheres.

Single-Step Fabrication of a Dual-Sensitive Chitosan Hydrogel by C-Mannich Reaction: Synthesis, Physicochemical Properties, and Screening of its Cu2+ Uptake

Uncovering the value of waste materials is one of the keys to sustainability. In this current work, valorization of chitosan was pursued to fabricate a novel modified chitosan functional hydrogel using a process-efficient protocol. The fabrication proceeds by a one-pot and single-step C-Mannich condensation of chitosan (3% w/v), glutaraldehyde (20 eq.), and 4-hydroxycoumarin (40 eq.) at 22 °C in 3% v/v acetic acid. The Mannich base modified chitosan hydrogel (CS-MB) exhibits a dual-responsive swelling behavior in response to pH and temperature that has not been observed in any other hydrogel systems. Combining the pre-defined optimal swelling pH (pH = 4) and temperature (T = 22 °C), the CS-MB was screened for its Cu2+ adsorption capacity at this condition. The CS-MB achieved an optimal adsorption capacity of 12.0 mg/g with 1.2 g/L adsorbent dosage after 36 h with agitation. The adsorption of Cu2+ on the surface of CS-MB was verified by EDS, and an overview of the adsorption sites was exhibited by FT-IR. The simply fabricated novel CS-MB hydrogel under investigation presents a unique response to external stimuli that exhibits a promise in heavy metal removal from aqueous media.

Dual-Functional Polyetheretherketone Surface with an Enhanced Osteogenic Capability and an Antibacterial Adhesion Property In Vitro by Chitosan Modification

A chitosan layer was covalently bonded to a polyetheretherketone (PEEK) surface using a simple facile self-assembly method to address inadequate biological activity and infection around the implant. The surface characterization, layer degradation, biological activity, and antibacterial adhesion properties of chitosan-modified PEEK (PEEK-CS) were studied. Through chitosan grafting, the surface morphology changed, the surface roughness increased, and the contact angle decreased significantly. PEEK-CS boosted cell adhesion, proliferation, increased alkaline phosphate activity, extracellular matrix mineralization, and expression of osteogenic genes. PEEK-CS demonstrated less adhesion to Porphyromonas gingivalis as well as less bacterial adhesion to P. gingivalis and Streptococcus mutans. According to our findings, chitosan modification significantly improved the osteogenic ability and antibacterial adhesion of PEEK in vitro.

Preparation and Characterization of Chitosan/TiO2 Composite Membranes as Adsorbent Materials for Water Purification

As it is used in all aspects of human life, water has become more and more polluted. For the past few decades, researchers and scientists have focused on developing innovative composite adsorbent membranes for water purification. The purpose of this research was to synthesize a novel composite adsorbent membrane for the removal of toxic pollutants (namely heavy metals, antibiotics and microorganisms). The as-synthesized chitosan/TiO₂ composite membranes were successfully prepared through a simple casting method. The TiO₂ nanoparticle concentration from the composite membranes was kept low, at 1% and 5%, in order not to block the functional groups of chitosan, which are responsible for the adsorption of metal ions. Nevertheless, the concentration of TiO₂ must be high enough to bestow good photocatalytic and antimicrobial activities. The synthesized composite membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and swelling capacity. The antibacterial activity was determined against four strains, Escherichia coli, Citrobacter spp., Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus. For the Gram-negative strains, a reduction of more than 5 units log CFU/mL was obtained. The adsorption capacity for heavy metal ions was maximum for the chitosan/TiO₂ 1% composite membrane, the retention values being 297 mg/g for Pb²⁺ and 315 mg/g for Cd²⁺ ions. These values were higher for the chitosan/TiO₂ 1% than for chitosan/TiO₂ 5%, indicating that a high content of TiO₂ can be one of the reasons for modest results reported previously in the literature. The photocatalytic degradation of a five-antibiotic mixture led to removal efficiencies of over 98% for tetracycline and meropenem, while for vancomycin and erythromycin the efficiencies were 86% and 88%, respectively. These values indicate that the chitosan/TiO₂ composite membranes exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation. The obtained composite membranes can be used for complex water purification processes (removal of heavy metal ions, antibiotics and microorganisms).
