Relative contributions of different sources to DOM in Erhai Lake as revealed by PLS-PM

Tracing sources of dissolved organic matter along the terrestrial-aquatic continuum in the Ore Mountains, Germany

There is growing concern about the rising levels of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in surface waters across the Northern hemisphere. However, only limited research has been conducted to unveil its precise origin. Compositional changes along terrestrial-aquatic pathways can help determine the terrestrial sources of DOM in streams. Stream water, soil water and soil horizons were sampled at four sites representing typical settings within a forested catchment in the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge, Germany) from winter 2020 to spring 2022. The samples were analyzed using pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). The resulting data were successfully subjected to semi-automatic processing of the molecular composition of DOM, reaching a percentage of identified peaks up to 98 %. Principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analyses were carried out to identify distinct differences between DOM from the potential sources and in the streams. According to the PCA, organic soil horizons, soil water, and stream water samples could be clearly distinguished. Cluster analysis revealed that soil water DOM at all depths of Peats and deeper horizons of the Peaty Gleysols contributed the most to DOM in the stream section dominated by organic soils. In areas dominated by mineral soils, stream DOM resembled the DOM from the deeper mineral horizons of Cambisols and Podzols. Overall, our results suggested that most of the DOM exported from the catchment was derived from deeper mineral soil horizons, with little contribution of DOM derived from organic soils. Therefore, DOM fingerprint analysis of in-situ soil water proved to be a promising approach for tracing back the main sources of stream water DOM.

Persistence of dissolved organic matter in sediments influenced by environmental factors：Implication for nutrition and carbon cycle

The persistence of dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a crucial role in the cycling and distribution of carbon and nutrients. Nonetheless, our understanding of how environmental alterations affect the persistence of sedimentary DOM remains incomplete. Excitation Emission Fluorescence Matrix-Parallel Factor Analysis (EEM-PARAFAC) was used to examine the fluorescence and compositional characteristics of hydrophilic and hydrophobic DOM (separated using XAD-8 resin) within sediments from twelve lakes and reservoirs. Fluorescence analysis indicated that DOM persistence is dependent on the proportions of the three components derived from PARAFAC. The Mantel test showed that climatic factors had the most significant impact on DOM persistence (Mantel's r = 0.46-0.54, Mantel's p = 0.001-0.007), while anthropogenic (Mantel's r = 0.24-0.32, Mantel's p = 0.03-0.05) and hydrological factors (Mantel's r = 0.03-0.22, Mantel's p = 0.06-0.40) had a somewhat lesser influence. Environmental changes resulted in a consistent decline in DOM persistence from Northeast to Southwest China, accompanied by an increase in gross primary productivity (GPP). Reduced DOM persistence due to climate, hydrological, and anthropogenic factors may lead to elevated concentrations of total phosphorus (TP), contributing to deteriorating water quality and events such as algal blooms. The decline in water quality due to reduced DOM persistence in lakes with high GPP can exacerbate the transition from carbon sinks to carbon sources. Consequently, the persistence of sedimentary DOM significantly influences nutrient and carbon cycling in lakes. Investigating DOM persistence in lakes across diverse geographic locations offers a new perspective on lake eutrophication and carbon emissions. Furthermore, it is crucial to develop targeted recommendations for lake restoration and management.

The Inverted U-Shaped Relationship Between Socio-Economic Status and Infections During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Although the World Health Organization has declared that the COVID-19 pandemic no longer qualifies as a global public health emergency, it still needs to explore the response of society to the COVID-19 pandemic. Socio-economic status (SES) was proven to be linearly associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, although this relationship may be more complex due to regional differences. In the study, we analyzed and revealed the effects and mechanisms of SES on infections among low, lower-middle, upper-middle and high SES group (LSG, LMSG, UMSG, and HSG, respectively). The results showed that the relationship between SES and infections was inverted U-shaped, especially in the first three phases. In Phase I, UMSG had the highest number of infections, with an average of 238.31/1M people (95%CI: 135.47-341.15/1M people). In Phases II and III, infections decreased insignificantly with increasing SES (r = -0.01, p = 0.92; r = -0.11, p = 0.22) and the highest number of infections were found in the LMSG. In Phase IV, SES was positively related to the number of infections (r = 0.54, p < 0.001). Furthermore, the nonlinear impact of multiple factors related to SES on the infections explains the complex relationships between SES and infections. SES affected infections mainly through medical resources, demographics and vaccination, and differed across the SES groups. Particularly, demographics could exert an impact on population mobility, subsequently influencing infections in LMSG, with an indirect effect of 0.01 (p < 0.05) in Phase II. This study argues for greater attention to countries with middle SES and the need for future targeted measures to cope with infectious diseases.

Urbanization influences dissolved organic matter characteristics but microbes affect greenhouse gas concentrations in lakes

Recognition and prediction of dissolved organic matter (DOM) properties and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is critical to understanding climate change and the fate of carbon in aquatic ecosystems, but related data is challenging to interpret due to covariance in multiple natural and anthropogenic variables with high spatial and temporal heterogeneity. Here, machine learning modeling combined with environmental analysis reveals that urbanization (e.g., population density and artificial surfaces) rather than geography determines DOM composition and properties in lakes. The structure of the bacterial community is the dominant factor determining GHG emissions from lakes. Urbanization increases DOM bioavailability and decreases the DOM degradation index (Ideg), increasing the potential for DOM conversion into inorganic carbon in lakes. The traditional fossil fuel-based path (SSP5) scenario increases carbon emission potential. Land conversion from water bodies into artificial surfaces causes organic carbon burial. It is predicted that increased urbanization will accelerate the carbon cycle in lake ecosystems in the future, which deserves attention in climate models and in the management of global warming.

Short term effects of digestate and composted digestate on soil health and crop yield: Implications for sustainable biowaste management in the bioenergy sector

Composting mitigates environmental risks associated with using solid digestate as fertilizer. However, evidence is lacking on benefits of using composted digestate as fertilizer in enhancing soil health and increasing agronomic yield compared to non-composted digestate (hereafter, digestate). A field study was conducted consisting of digestate, composted digestate, co-composted digestate with biogas feedstocks (corn [Zea mays L.] silage, poultry litter, corn silage + poultry litter or food processing by-product), inorganic nitrogen fertilizer, and control (no treatment applied) on soil microbial biomass, enzyme activities (EA), soil organic carbon (SOC), bioavailable P (P), total nitrogen (TN), soil health index (SHI), and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) yield. The Partial Least Square Path Model (PLS-PM) was used to predict: 1) nutrient cycling in response to changes in microbial growth and EA and 2) agronomic yield in response to SHI and soil nutrients dynamics. Composted digestate had equivalent soil health benefits with most of co-composted materials and digestate, albeit agronomic yield was greatest with composted digestate, which was 40 % and 100 % greater than with inorganic nitrogen fertilizer and digestate, respectively, indicating composted digestate's potential to replace the synthetic N fertilizer. Moreover, composts from a sole digestate, rather than the ones from co-composted with fresh feedsstocks, can be promising organic amendments and fertilizers for growing sunflower. The PLS-PM model identified that triggered microbial biomass growth and EA, following digestate and composted digestate applications, catalyzed organic matter decomposition, resulting in enhanced nutrients contents and soil health. However, the model revealed that improved SHI did not predict agronomic yield, as opposed to P and TN, suggesting agronomic performance may have been more sensitive to changes in specific soil nutrients status than the overall soil health condition. We conclude that the benefits of composted digestate as fertilizer hint the significance of digestate valorization via post-digestate composting and compost utilization for sustainability of the bioenergy sector.

Comparison of spatiotemporal burial and contamination of heavy metals in core sediments of two plateau lakes with contrasting environments: implication for anthropogenic-driven processes

Investigating the impacts of climatic factors and human activities on sedimentary records of heavy metal (HM) contamination in lakes is essential for decision-making in global environmental monitoring and assessment. Spatiotemporal distributions of grain size (GS) and HM (Al, Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, and Pb) concentrations have been conducted in core sediments that are collected from two adjacent plateau fault-bound lakes in southwest China with contrasting environments, i.e., deep oligotrophic Lake Fuxian (FX) and shallow hypertrophic Lake Xingyun (XY). Results showed that the average value of d50 in FX (4.61 μm) was lower than that in XY (8.35 μm), but the average concentrations of HMs (except Cr and Mn) in XY were higher than those in FX. Heavy metal burial rates (HMBR) were mainly controlled by sediment accumulation rates (SARs) rather than HM concentrations. The correlation coefficients between GS and HM concentrations became strong as the increasing water depths were associated with a stable sedimentary environment. Time-integrated enrichment factors (EF) and source identification of HMs between FX and XY represented that Cr, Ni, and Cu originated from natural sources but Mn, Zn, As, and Pb from anthropogenic sources, respectively. Regardless of FX and XY, the transition times of HMs from natural to anthropogenic sources occurred in the mid-1960s. Comparison of qualification impacts of climatic factors and human-induced factors on increased anthropogenic HMBR by the partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) implied that socio-economic activities, such as population density (PD) and gross domestic product (GDP), provided higher contributors to increased anthropogenic HMBR in XY (0.23/0.71) than FX (0.11/0.18). The comparative results of this study provided new insights into environmental monitoring and management of HM contamination for adjacent lakes with contrasting environments.

Aerobic denitrifying using actinobacterial consortium: Novel denitrifying microbe and its application

The aerobic denitrifying capacity of actinomycete strain has been investigated recently, while little is known about nitrogen and carbon substrate removal by mix-cultured aerobic denitrifying actinobacteria (Mix-CADA) community. Hence, three Mix-CADA consortiums, named Y23, X21, and Y27, were isolated from urban lakes to investigate their aerobic denitrification capacity, and their removal efficiency for nitrate and dissolved organic carbon were >97 % and 90 %, respectively. Illumina Miseq sequencing revealed that Streptomyces was the most dominant genus in the Mix-CADA consortium. Network analysis indicated that Streptomyces exfoliates, as the core species in the Mix-CADA consortium, majorly contributed to dissolved organic carbon and total nitrogen reduction. Moreover, the three Mix-CADA consortiums could remove 78 % of the total nitrogen and 61 % of the permanganate index from the micro-polluted l water. Meanwhile, humic-like was significantly utilized by three Mix-CADA consortiums, whereas Mix-CADA Y27 could also utilize aromatic protein and soluble microbial by-product-like in the micro-polluted raw water purification. In summary, this study will offer a novel perspective for the purification of micro-polluted raw water using the Mix-CADA consortium.

Sediment organic carbon dynamics response to land use change in diverse watershed anthropogenic activities

Sediment organic carbon (SOC) is a precious archive that synthesizes anthropogenic processes that remove geochemical fluxes from watersheds. However, the scarcity of inspection about the dynamic mechanisms of anthropogenic activities on SOC limits understanding into how key human factors drive carbon dynamics. Here, four typical basins with similar natural but significantly diverse human contexts (high-moderate-low disturbance: XJ-ZS and YJ-LS) were selected to reconstruct sedimentation rates (SR) and SOC dynamics nearly a century based on 200-cm corers. A partial least squares path model (PLS-PM) was used to establish successive (70 years) and multiple anthropogenic data (population, agriculture, land use, etc.) quantification methods for SOC. Intensified anthropogenic disturbances shifted all SR from pre-stable to post-1960s fluctuating increases (total coefficient: high: 0.63 < low: 0.47 < medium: 0.45). Although land use change was co-critical driver of SOC variations, their trend and extent differed under the dams and other disturbances (SOC mutated in high-moderate but stable in low). For high basin, land use changes increased (0.12) but dams reduced (-0.10) the downstream SOC. Furthermore, SOC mutation corresponded to soil erosion due to urbanization in both periods A and B. For moderate, SOC was reversed with the increase in afforestation and cropland (-0.19) due to the forest excitation effect and deep ploughing, which corresponded to the drought in phase B and the anthropogenic ecological project in A. For low, the increase in SOC corresponded to the Great Leap Forward deforestation in period B and the reed sweep in A, which suggested the minor land change substantially affected (0.16) SOC in fragile environments. Overall, SOC dynamics revealed that anthropogenic activities affected terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems for near the centenary, especially land use. This is constructive for agroforestry management and reservoir construction, consistent with expectations like upstream carbon sequestration and downstream carbon stabilization.

Novel insights in seasonal dynamics and co-existence patterns of phytoplankton and micro-eukaryotes in drinking water reservoir, Northwest China: DNA data and ecological model

Although associations between phytoplankton and micro-eukaryotes have been studied in aquatic ecosystems, there are still knowledge gaps in comprehending their dynamics and interactions in drinking water reservoirs. Here, the seasonal dynamics of phytoplankton and micro-eukaryotic diversities and their co-existence patterns were studied in a drinking water reservoir, Northwest China. The highest phytoplankton diversity was observed in summer, and Chlorella sp. that belongs to Chlorophyta was the most abundant genus. The highest eukaryotic diversity was also detected in summer, and Rimostrombidium sp. that belongs to Ciliophora was the most dominant genus. Mantel test showed that the phytoplankton diversity was significantly correlated with ammonia nitrogen (r = 0.561, p = 0.001) and dissolved organic carbon (r = 0.267, p = 0.017), while the eukaryotic diversity was significantly associated with ammonia nitrogen (r = 0.265, p = 0.034) and temperature (r = 0.208, p = 0.046). PLS-PM (Partial Least Squares Path Modeling) further revealed that nutrients (P < 0.01) significantly affected the phytoplankton diversity, while nutrients (P < 0.01) and temperature (P < 0.01) significantly influenced the eukaryotic diversity. Co-occurrence network displayed the primarily positive interactions (77.66% positive and 22.34% negative) between phytoplankton and micro-eukaryotes. These findings could deepen our understanding of interactions between phytoplankton and micro-eukaryotes and their driving factors under changing aquatic environments of drinking water reservoirs.

Regulation of the Nutrient Cycle Pathway and the Microbial Loop Structure by Different Types of Dissolved Organic Matter Decomposition in Lakes

To explore the effect of different types of dissolved organic matter (DOM) decomposition on nutrient cycling pathways and the microbial loop, four lakes with different DOM sources were investigated monthly. In Lake Tangxun, Dolichospermum decay released highly labile dissolved organic nitrogen into the water column. This induced bacterial organic nitrogen decomposition, as indicated by the increased abundance of gltB, gltD, gdh, and glnA as well as aminopeptidase activity. Genes associated with dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium further fueled ammonium accumulation, driving Microcystis blooms in the summer. In Lake Zhiyin, fish bait deposits (high nitrogen, similar to Dolichospermum detritus) also caused Microcystis blooms. Detritus from Microcystis decomposition then produced high levels of labile dissolved organic phosphorus, inducing phosphatase activity and increasing soluble reactive phosphorus concentrations from September to April in Lakes Tangxun and Zhiyin. The high refractory DOM from macrophytes in Lake Houguan led to insufficient nutrient availability, leading to nutrient mutualism between algae and bacteria. The high levels of labile dissolved organic carbon from terrestrial detritus in Lake Yandong increased bacterial biomass and production, resulting in low chlorophyll content due to the competitive relationship between algal and bacterial nutrient requirements. Therefore, different DOM compositions induce unique connections among available nutrients, algae, and bacteria in the microbial loop.

Molecular transformation of dissolved organic matter and formation pathway of humic substances in dredged sludge under aerobic composting

Using Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) and molecular reaction network analysis, this study investigated molecular transformation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and formation pathway of humic substances (HS) in dredged sludge during aerobic composting. The results showed that macromolecular N-containing compounds in dredged sludge are abundantly transformed into unsaturated and aromatic oxygenated compounds, exhibiting physicochemical properties similar to those of humus. Especially, N-containing compounds with one nitrogen atom are susceptible to oxidative deamination. Furthermore, assemblages of reactive fragments (e.g., -C7H8O2, -C10H12O2, -C2H2O2, and -C4H6O2) were identified as potential precursors to HS formed by the following reactions: starting with protein deamination and desulfurization, lignin delignification cascaded, finally decarbonylation occurred. This work provides novel insight for optimizing the process of stabilization and humification of dredged sludge.

Composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in lakes responds to the trophic state and phytoplankton community succession

Dissolved organic matter (DOM), a heterogeneous mixture of diverse compounds with different molecular weights, is crucial for the lake carbon cycle. The properties and concentration of DOM in lakes are closely related to anthropogenic activities, terrigenous input, and phytoplankton growth. Thus, the lake's trophic state, along with the above factors, has an important effect on DOM. We determined the DOM sources and molecular composition in six lakes along a trophic gradient during and after phytoplankton bloom by combining optical techniques and the Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS). CDOM pools in eutrophic lakes may be more biologically refractory than in oligotrophic and mesotrophic lakes. Molecular formulas of DOM were positively correlated with the TSI (trophic state index) value (R² = 0.73), with the nitrogen-containing compounds (CHON) being the most abundant formulas in all studied lakes. Eutrophication modified the molecular formulas of DOM to have less CHO% and more heteroatom S-containing compounds (CHOS% and CHNOS%), and this was the synactic result of the anthropogenic perturbation and phytoplankton proliferation. In eutrophic lakes, summer DOM showed higher molecular lability than in autumn, which was related to the seasonal phytoplankton community succession. Although the phytoplankton-derived DOM is highly bioavailable, we detected a simpler and more fragile phytoplankton community ecosystem in autumn, which may be accompanied by a lower phytoplankton production and metabolic activity. Therefore, we concluded that the lake eutrophication increased the allochthonous DOM accumulation along with sewage and nutrient input, and subsequently increased its release with phytoplankton bloom. Eutrophication and phytoplankton growth are accompanied by more highly unsaturated compounds, O₃S+O₅S compounds, and carboxylic-rich alicyclic compounds (CRAMs), which are the biotransformation product of phytoplankton-derived DOM. Eutrophication may be a potential source of refractory DOM compounds for biodegradation and photodegradation. Our results can clarify the potential role of water organic matter in the future global carbon cycle processes, considering the increasing worldwide eutrophication of inland waters.
