Preparation and modification of polymer microspheres, application in wastewater treatment: A review

The removal of various pollutants from water is necessary due to the increasing requirements for the removal of various pollutants from wastewater and the quality of drinking water. Polymer microspheres are regarded as exemplary adsorbent materials due to their high adsorption efficiency, excellent adsorption performance, and ease of handling. Herein, the advantages and disadvantages of different preparation methods, modifications, applications and the current research status of polymer microspheres are summarized at large. Furthermore, the enhanced performance of modified composite microspheres is emphasized, including adsorption efficiency, thermal stability, and significant improvements in physical and chemical properties. Subsequently, the current applications and potential of polymeric microspheres for wastewater treatment, including the removal of inorganic and organic pollutants, heavy metal ions, and other contaminants are summarized. Finally, future research directions for polymer microspheres are proposed, outlining the challenges and solutions associated with the application of polymer microspheres in wastewater treatment.

Removal of 6-methylquinoline from shale gas wastewater using electrochemical carbon nanotubes filter

6-Methylquinoline (6-MQ) is identified as a high-concentration organic compound pervasive in shale gas wastewater (SGW) and poses a significant risk of environmental pollution. In response, this study aimed to address these challenges by introducing an innovative electrochemical membrane constructed with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for the removal of 6-MQ. The investigation systematically explored the impact of voltage, initial pollutant concentration, and salinity on the performance of the electrochemical CNTs filter. It was found a positive correlation between removal efficiency and increasing voltage and salinity levels. Conversely, as the initial concentration of pollutants increased, the efficiency showed a diminishing trend. The electrochemical CNTs filter exhibited remarkable efficacy in both adsorption removal and electrochemical oxidation of 6-MQ. Notably, the CNTs membrane exhibited robust adsorption capabilities, evidenced by the sustained adsorption of 6-MQ for over 33 h. Furthermore, applying an electrochemical oxidation voltage of 3 V consistently maintained a removal rate exceeding 34.0% due to both direct and indirect oxidation, underscoring the sustained efficacy of the electrochemical membranes. Besides, real wastewater experiments, while displaying a reduction in removal efficiency compared to synthetic wastewater experiments, emphasized the substantial potential of the electrochemical CNTs filter for practical applications. This study underscores the significant promise of electrochemical membranes in addressing low molecular weight contaminants in SGW, contributing valuable insights for advancing SGW treatment strategies.

Synchronously improved permeability, selectivity and fouling resistance of Fe-N-C functionalized ceramic catalytic membrane for effective water treatment: The critical role of Fe

Constructing catalytic membrane simultaneously displaying high permeability, selectivity and antifouling performance in water treatment remains challenging. Herein, the surface and pore channels of the ceramic membrane were co-functionalized with nitrogen doped carbon supported Fe catalyst (CN-F), and the Fe content was varied to investigate its effect on performance of CN-F coupled with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation (CN-F/PMS) for water treatment. Results confirmed the introduced Fe (in Fe-N coordination form) greatly enhanced the permeability, selectivity and fouling resistance of CN-F. Optimal CN-F3/PMS achieved 96.5% removal and 52.1% mineralization of sulfamethoxazole in short retention duration (2.7 min), whose performance was 5.4 and 6.7 times higher than that of nitrogen doped carbon functionalized ceramic catalytic membrane (CN/PMS) and CN-F3 filtration alone, respectively. CN-F3/PMS also efficiently inhibited fouling on both surface and pores with 2.8 and 2.4 times lower flux loss than that of CN/PMS and CN-F3 filtration alone, respectively. Moreover, CN-F3/PMS displayed superior performance in long-term treatment of real coking wastewater. The outstanding performance of CN-F was mainly attributed to the dual role of supported Fe, which served as hydrophilic site for enhanced water permeation and major active site for PMS adsorption and reduction into reactive species (mainly high-valent Fe(IV)=O species) towards pollutant elimination.

Recent technologies for glyphosate removal from aqueous environment: A critical review

The growing demand for food has led to an increase in the use of herbicides and pesticides over the years. One of the most widely used herbicides is glyphosate (GLY). It has been used extensively since 1974 for weed control and is currently classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a Group 2A substance, probably carcinogenic to humans. The industry and academia have some disagreements regarding GLY toxicity in humans and its effects on the environment. Even though this herbicide is not mentioned in the WHO water guidelines, some countries have decided to set maximum acceptable concentrations in tap water, while others have decided to ban its use in crop production completely. Researchers around the world have employed different technologies to remove or degrade GLY, mostly at the laboratory scale. Water treatment plants combine different technologies to remove it alongside other water pollutants, in some cases achieving acceptable removal efficiencies. Certainly, there are many challenges in upscaling purification technologies due to the costs and lack of factual information about their adverse effects. This review presents different technologies that have been used to remove GLY from water since 2012 to date, its detection and removal methods, challenges, and future perspectives.

Pressure-driven membrane filtration technology for terminal control of organic DBPs: A review

Disinfection by-products (DBPs), a series of undesired secondary contaminants formed during the disinfection processes, deteriorate water quality, threaten human health and endanger ecological safety. Membrane-filtration technologies are commonly used in the advanced water treatment and have shown a promising performance for removing trace contaminants. In order to gain a clearer understanding of the behavior of DBPs in membrane-filtration processes, this work dedicated to: (1) comprehensively reviewed the retention efficiency of microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) for DBPs. (2) summarized the mechanisms involved size exclusion, electrostatic repulsion and adsorption in the membrane retention of DBPs. (3) In conjunction with principal component analysis, discussed the influence of various factors (such as the characteristics of membrane and DBPs, feed solution composition and operating conditions) on the removal efficiency. In general, the characteristics of the membranes (salt rejection, molecular weight cut-off, zeta potential, etc.) and DBPs (molecular size, electrical property, hydrophobicity, polarity, etc.) fundamentally determine the membrane-filtration performance on retaining DBPs, and the actual operating environmental factors (such as solute concentration, coexisting ions/NOMs, pH and transmembrane pressure) exert a positive/negative impact on performance to some extent. Current researches indicate that NF and RO can be effective in removing DBPs, and looking forward, we recommend that multiple factors should be taken into account that optimize the existed membrane-filtration technologies, rationalize the selection of membrane products, and develop novel membrane materials targeting the removal of DBPs.

Recent advances in Metal Organic Framework (MOF)-based hierarchical composites for water treatment by adsorptional photocatalysis: A review

Architecting a desirable and highly efficient nanocomposite for applications like adsorption, catalysis, etc. has always been a challenge. Metal Organic Framework (MOF)-based hierarchical composite has perceived popularity as an advanced adsorbent and catalyst. Hierarchically structured MOF material can be modulated to allow the surface interaction (external or internal) of MOF with the molecules of interest. They are well endowed with tunable functionality, high porosity, and increased surface area epitomizing mass transfer and mechanical stability of the fabricated nanostructure. Additionally, the anticipated optimization of nanocomposite can only be acquired by a thorough understanding of the synthesis techniques. This review starts with a brief introduction to MOF and the requirement for advanced nanocomposites after the setback faced by conventional MOF structures. Further, we discussed the background of MOF-based hierarchical composites followed by synthetic techniques including chemical and thermal treatment. It is important to rationally validate the successful nanocomposite fabrication by characterization techniques, an overview of challenges, and future perspectives associated with MOF-based hierarchically structured nanocomposite.

Next-generation graphene oxide additives composite membranes for emerging organic micropollutants removal: Separation, adsorption and degradation

In the past two decades, membrane technology has attracted considerable interest as a viable and promising method for water purification. Emerging organic micropollutants (EOMPs) in wastewater have trace, persistent, highly variable quantities and types, develop hazardous intermediates and are diffusible. These primary issues affect EOMPs polluted wastewater on an industrial scale differently than in a lab, challenging membranes-based EOMP removal. Graphene oxide (GO) promises state-of-the-art membrane synthesis technologies and use in EOMPs removal systems due to its superior physicochemical, mechanical, and electrical qualities and high oxygen content. This critical review highlights the recent advancements in the synthesis of next-generation GO membranes with diverse membrane substrates such as ceramic, polyethersulfone (PES), and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The EOMPs removal efficiencies of GO membranes in filtration, adsorption (incorporated with metal, nanomaterial in biodegradable polymer and biomimetic membranes), and degradation (in catalytic, photo-Fenton, photocatalytic and electrocatalytic membranes) and corresponding removal mechanisms of different EOMPs are also depicted. GO-assisted water treatment strategies were further assessed by various influencing factors, including applied water flow mode and membrane properties (e.g., permeability, hydrophily, mechanical stability, and fouling). GO additive membranes showed better permeability, hydrophilicity, high water flux, and fouling resistance than pristine membranes. Likewise, degradation combined with filtration is two times more effective than alone, while crossflow mode improves the photocatalytic degradation performance of the system. GO integration in polymer membranes enhances their stability, facilitates photocatalytic processes, and gravity-driven GO membranes enable filtration of pollutants at low pressure, making membrane filtration more inexpensive. However, simultaneous removal of multiple contaminants with contrasting characteristics and variable efficiencies in different systems demands further optimization in GO-mediated membranes. This review concludes with identifying future critical research directions to promote research for determining the GO-assisted OMPs removal membrane technology nexus and maximizing this technique for industrial application.

An Overview of the Impact of Pharmaceuticals on Aquatic Microbial Communities

Pharmaceuticals are present as pollutants in several ecosystems worldwide. Despite the reduced concentrations at which they are detected, their negative impact on natural biota constitutes a global concern. The consequences of pharmaceuticals' presence in water sources and food have been evaluated with a higher detail for human health. However, although most of the pharmaceuticals detected in the environment had not been designed to act against microorganisms, it is of utmost importance to understand their impact on the environmental native microbiota. Microbial communities can suffer serious consequences from the presence of pharmaceuticals as pollutants in the environment, which may directly impact public health and ecosystem equilibrium. Among this class of pollutants, the ones that have been studied in more detail are antibiotics. This work aims to provide an overview of the impacts of different pharmaceuticals on environmental biofilms, more specifically in biofilms from aquatic ecosystems and engineered water systems. The alterations caused in the biofilm function and characteristics, as well as bacteria antimicrobial tolerance and consequently the associated risks for public health, are also reviewed. Despite the information already available on this topic, the need for additional data urges the assessment of emerging pollutants on microbial communities and the potential public health impacts.

Enhanced removal of organic contaminants by novel iron-carbon and premagnetization: Performance and enhancement mechanism

Iron-carbon (Fe-C) microelectrolysis has attracted considerable attention in wastewater treatment due to its excellent ability to remove contaminants. Herein, novel Fe-C granules were synthesized by simple calcination method for removing organic contaminations, and a cost-effective and environmentally friendly method, namely pre-magnetization, was used to improve the micro-electrolysis performance of Fe-C. Batch experiments proved that premagnetized iron-carbon (pre-Fe-C) could significantly improve the removal of methyl orange (MO) at different Fe-C mass ratios (1:2-2:1), material dosages (1.0-2.5 g/L), initial pH values (3.0-5.0), and MO concentrations (10.0-50.0 mg/L). Electrochemical analysis showed that premagnetization could increase the current density and reduce the charge transfer resistance of the microelectrolysis system, making Fe-C more susceptible to electrochemical corrosion. Characterizations confirmed that the corrosion products of the materials included FeO, Fe₂O₃, and Fe₃O₄, and more corrosion products were formed in the pre-Fe-C system. Radical quenching experiments and electron spin resonance spectroscopy verified that ^•OH, ¹O₂, and O₂^-• were all involved in pollutant removal, and premagnetization could promote the generation of more reactive oxygen species. Overall, the pre-Fe-C process could effectively remove various organic pollutants, exhibit good adaptability to complex water environments, and hold potential for industrial applications.
