Synthesis of cerium and bismuth doped nickel aluminate for the photodegradation of methylene blue, methyl orange and rhodamine B dyes

Impact of surface topography and hydrophobicity in varied precursor concentrations of tenorite (CuO) films: a study of film properties and photocatalytic efficiency

Semiconductor films are crucial in photocatalysis applications, yet their controlled production remains challenging. Previous studies have mainly focused on deposition processes, heating rates, and doping of semiconductor oxides. In this paper, we introduce a novel method for fabricating tenorite (CuO) semiconductor films with varying precursor concentrations (0.01, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, and 0.1 g/ml) using a dip-coating technique. We explore the impact of contact angles, 3D surface topography, and film thickness on photoactivation properties, areas with limited previous research focus. The results demonstrate that higher-concentration tenorite films (0.1 g/ml) exhibit rougher surfaces (77.3 nm), increased hydrophobicity (65.61°), improved light-harvesting ability, enhanced charge separation, and higher active oxygen output. The crystal sizes were within the range of 7.3-44.1 nm. Wettability tests show a 21.47% improvement in the 0.1 g/ml film surface under indirect sunlight compared to darkness. Transmittance rates in the 600 nm range were from 0.02 to 90.94%. The direct optical band gaps were 1.21-2.74 eV, while the indirect band gaps remained unaffected (0.9-1.11 eV). Surface morphology analysis reveals an increased presence of grains with higher concentrations. Regarding photocatalysis's impact on film morphology and copper content, SEM images reveal minimal changes in film structure, while copper content remains stable with slight variations. This suggests strong adhesion of tenorite to the film after photocatalysis. Tenorite thin films display exceptional photocatalytic efficiency, making them suitable for practical applications.

Efficient photocatalytic degradation of textile dye pollutants using thermally exfoliated graphitic carbon nitride (TE-g-C3N4)

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), an organic photocatalyst was reported to have beneficial properties to be used in wastewater treatment applications. However, g-C3N4, in its bulk form was found to have poor photocatalytic degradation efficiency due to its inherent limitations such as poor specific surface area and fast electron-hole pair recombination rate. In this study, we have tuned the physiochemical properties of bulk g-C3N4 by direct thermal exfoliation (TE-g-C3N4) and examined their photocatalytic degradation efficiency against abundant textile dyes such as methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO), and rhodamine B (RhB). The degradation efficiencies for MB, MO, and RhB dyes are 92 ± 0.18%, 93 ± 0.31%, and 95 ± 0.4% respectively in 60 min of UV light irradiation. The degradation efficiency increased with an increase in the exfoliation temperature. The prepared catalysts were characterized using FTIR, XRD, FE-SEM, EDAX, BET, and UV-DRS. In BET analysis, TE-g-C3N4 samples showed improved surface area (48.20 m2/g) when compared to the bulk g-C3N4 (5.03 m2/g). Further, the TE-g-C3N4 had 2.98 times higher adsorption efficiency than the bulk ones. The free radicals scavenging studies revealed that the superoxide radicals played an important role in the photodegradation for dyes, when compared to the hydroxyl radical (.OH) and the photo-induced holes (h+), Photoluminescence (PL) emission and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) spectra of TE-g-C3N4 indicated a lowered electron-hole pairs' recombination rate and an increased photo-induced charge transfer respectively. Further, the TE-g-C3N4 were found to have excellent stability for up to 5 cycles with only a minor decrease in the activity from 92% to 86.2%. These findings proved that TE-g-C3N4 was an excellent photocatalyst for the removal and degradation of textile dyes from wastewater.

Nano spinel NiAl2O4: structure, optical and photocatalytic performance evaluation and optimization

Four kinds of spinel NiAl2O4were synthesized by the polyacrylamide gel method using Al2(SO4)3·18H2O and Al(NO3)3·9H2O as aluminum salts and anhydrous NiSO4and NiSO4·6H2O as nickel salts. The effects of different aluminum salts and nickel salts on the structure, optical and photocatalytic activity of spinel NiAl2O4were confirmed by various characterizations. There is no NiO impurity in the spinel NiAl2O4synthesized with Al2(SO4)3·18H2O as aluminum salt, while NiAl2O4, NiO and C-O functional group coexist in the target product with Al(NO3)3·9H2O as aluminum salt, and C-O functional group and NiO inhibits the photocatalytic activity of the system. Based on photocatalytic experiment, response surface methodology and free radical verification experiment, the influence of experimental parameters including synthesis pathway, initial drug concentration, initialpHand catalyst content on the photocatalytic activity of spinel NiAl2O4and the main active species involved in the reaction were investigated. The degradation percentage of spinel NiAl2O4synthesized with Al2(SO4)3·18H2O as aluminum salt and NiSO4·6H2O as nickel salt was 86.3% at the initial concentration of 50 mg l-1,pH= 5.33 and catalyst content of 1 g l-1. The mechanism investigation confirmed that the C-O functional group plays the dual role of impurity level and electron transfer in the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride by spinel NiAl2O4.

Detection of abemaciclib, an anti-breast cancer agent, using a new electrochemical DNA biosensor

Detection of DNA molecules and possible chemotherapy-induced changes in its structure has been the goal of researchers using rapid, sensitive and inexpensive approaches. Therefore, the aim of this study was to fabricate a new electrochemical DNA biosensor using pencil graphite electrodes modified with polypyrrole/Ce doped hexagonal nickel oxide nanodisks or PP/Ce-doped H-NiO-ND composites for determination of Abemaciclib (AMC) and ds-DNA molecules. The DNA biosensor was prepared by immobilizing ds-DNA on the surface of PP/Ce-doped H-NiO-ND/PGE. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was used to electrochemically detect AMC. The results elucidate the extremely high sensitivity of the ds-DNA/PP/Ce-doped H-NiO-ND/PGE biosensor to AMC, with a narrow detection limit of 2.7 nM and a lengthy linear range of 0.01–600.0 μM. The admirable performance of as-fabricated biosensor could be related to the active reaction sites and the unique electrochemical response related to the nanocomposites by enhancing ds-DNA stabilization and accelerating electron transfer on the surface of electrode.
