Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) is a typical heavy metal contaminant along China coasts. Clams Ruditapes philippinarum are widely distributed in multiple climatic zones. However, few research has been conducted on the different responses to Cd in clams from different climatic zones. In this study, the temperate zone Bohai Sea (BS) and tropical zone South China Sea (SCS) clams exhibited distinct background metabolome profiles, characterized by different strategies of osmotic regulation, energy metabolism, and anaerobiosis tendencies, suggesting different tolerance and enrichment capacities to Cd. After Cd treatments, the BS clams demonstrated quicker and higher accumulations of Cd than the SCS clams. Despite differences in their background metabolomes, both BS and SCS clams displayed similar metabolomic responses to Cd, such as anaerobiosis inhibition and increased energy demands. Overall, these findings suggested that the inconsistency of biological responses induced by geographic conditions should be considered in ecotoxicological studies. CAPSULE ABSTRACT: This study elucidated the biological differences in clams Ruditapes philippinarum from the Bohai Sea and South China Sea, and the metabolomic responses in these two clam populations after Cd (200 μg/L) treatments.

Abstract
Oocysts of the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii are found in felid feces and can be washed into coastal waters, where they persist for months, attaching to algae and accumulating in invertebrates. We used wild bivalves to assess contamination of coastal waters of the Kerguelen and Galapagos archipelagos by this zoonotic parasite. Additionally, we leveraged the contrasting situations of these archipelagos to identify some potential drivers of contamination. In the Galapagos, with a cat density reaching 142 per km2, 15.38% of the sampled oysters (Saccostrea palmula) tested positive for T. gondii by quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) (n = 260), and positive samples were found in all eight sampling sites. In Kerguelen, with 1-3 cats per km2, 40.83% of 120 tested mussels (Mytilus edulis platensis) were positive, and positive samples were found in four out of the five sampling sites. These findings provide evidence of T. gondii contamination in the coastal waters of these archipelagos. Furthermore, T. gondii-positive bivalves were found on islands located 20 km away (Galapagos) and 5 km away (Kerguelen) from the nearest cat population, indicating that T. gondii oocysts can disperse through waterborne mechanisms over several kilometers from their initial deposition site. In the Galapagos, where runoff is infrequent and all sites are exposed to currents, the prevalence of qPCR-positive bivalves did not show significant variations between sites (p = 0.107). In Kerguelen where runoff is frequent and site exposure variable, the prevalence varied significantly (p < 0.001). The detection of T. gondii in Kerguelen mussels was significantly correlated with the site exposure to currents (odds ratio (OR) 60.2, p < 0.001) and the on-site density of giant kelp forests (OR 2.624, p < 0.001). This suggests that bivalves can be contaminated not only by oocysts transported by currents but also by consuming marine aggregates containing oocysts that tend to form in kelp forests.

Abstract
Depuration and anhydrous living-preservation are two important and consecutive steps during the circulation of Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas), and two main factors in depuration, salinity and duration, are pivotal to posterior anhydrous living-preservation of C. gigas. In this work, the comprehensive effects of depuration salinity (26-38 g/L) and duration (0-72 h) on anhydrous living-preservation at 4 °C for 7 days were investigated in regard of mortality, biochemical indexes (fatty acids profile analysis, glycogen) and proteome changes as well. The results showed that the mortality of C. gigas increased obviously with 72 h depuration and especially with 20 % salinity fluctuation, concomitantly accompanying metabolism disorder. Furthermore, alterations in salinity and duration resulted in 381 different expression proteins (DEPs), which were gotten more involved in the pathways related to amino acid metabolism. Taken together, it was suggested that duration < 48 h and salinity fluctuations lower than 10 % were the preferred conditions for anhydrous living-preservation.

Abstract
We studied the depuration mechanisms of metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, Mn, Ni, Cr, Fe) in Neohelice granulata, from sites with different human impacts (PC, a more impacted site and VM, a less impacted one). Our objectives included assessing metal concentrations (essential and non-essential) before and after depuration treatment, evaluating biochemical biomarkers (non-enzymatic and enzymatic) pre and post-treatment, and determining the role of metal-rich granules (MRG) in depuration. We observed variability in metals and biomarkers post-depuration, with no significant differences observed in PC, while Cd and Mn increased and Ni, Cu, and Fe decreased in VM. Integrated biomarkers' response indicated the prevailing antioxidant capacity in depurated organisms. Lipid peroxidation changes were insignificant, except in depurated-VM where values increased. MRG showed a significant decrease only for Mn and Fe, suggesting they were not the primary depuration structure. We concluded that depuration might depend on the species, gender and contamination history.

Abstract
Aquatic environments are important sources of healthy and nutritious foods; however, clams, mussels, and oysters (the bivalves most consumed by humans) can pose considerable health risks to consumers if contaminated by heavy metals in polluted areas. These organisms can accumulate dangerously high concentrations of heavy metals (e.g., Cd, Hg, Pb) in their soft tissues that can then be transferred to humans following ingestion. Monitoring contaminants in clams, mussels and oysters and their environments is critically important for global human health and food security, which requires reliable measurement of heavy-metal concentrations in the soft tissues. The aim of our present paper is to provide a review of how heavy metals are quantified in clams, mussels, and oysters. We do this by evaluating sample-preparation methods (i.e., tissue digestion / extraction and analyte preconcentration) and instrumental techniques (i.e., atomic, fluorescence and mass spectrometric methods, chromatography, neutron activation analysis and electrochemical sensors) that have been applied for this purpose to date. Application of these methods, their advantages, limitations, challenges and expected future directions are discussed.

Abstract
Marine traditional Chinese medicines (MTCMs) hold a significant place in the rich cultural heritage in China. It plays an irreplaceable role in addressing human diseases and serves as a crucial pillar for the development of China's marine economy. However, the rapid pace of industrialization has raised concerns about the safety of MTCM, particularly in relation to heavy metal pollution. Heavy metal pollution poses a significant threat to the development of MTCM and human health, necessitating the need for detection analysis and risk assessment of heavy metals in MTCM. In this paper, the current research status, pollution situation, detection and analysis technology, removal technology and risk assessment of heavy metals in MTCM are discussed, and the establishment of a pollution detection database and a comprehensive quality and safety supervision system for MTCM is proposed. These measures aim to enhance understanding of heavy metals and harmful elements in MTCM. It is expected to provide a valuable reference for the control of heavy metals and harmful elements in MTCM, as well as the sustainable development and application of MTCM.

Abstract
Morocco is one of the most affected regions by heavy metal pollution worldwide. In this study, two ecosystems in Agadir Bay, southern Morocco, were studied seasonally, using surface sediment and bivalve species. The concentrations of Cu, Pb and Cd were determined using the Shimadzu AAS 7000 flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer method. Our results marked average levels corresponding to an unpolluted sediment with a low contamination degree, low ecological risk associated with metal contamination, and levels that did not exceed the thresholds set by EC, USEPA, INERIS and INRH, except for Pb in tourist beach. The principal component analysis findings revealed a positive correlation in the bioaccumulation between the two compartments, with an influence of abiotic parameters. Thus, to better manage environmental pollution in these ecosystems, authorities must implement waste treatment strategies in the surrounding harbor and tourist complexes and prohibit the use of these toxic metals in the coastal areas.

Abstract
Depuration is a vital stage to ensure the safety of oyster consumption, and salinity had a great impact on the environmental adaptability of oysters, but the underlying molecular mechanism was poorly understood during depuration stage. Here, Crassostrea gigas was depurated for 72 h at different salinity (26, 29, 32, 35, 38 g/L, corresponding to ±20%, ±10% salinity fluctuation away from oyster's production area) and then analyzed by using transcriptome, proteome, and metabolome combined with bioinformatics techniques. The transcriptome showed that the salinity stress led to 3185 differentially expressed genes and mainly enriched in amino acid metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, lipid metabolism, etc. A total of 464 differentially expressed proteins were screened by the proteome, and the number of up-regulated expression proteins was less than the down-regulated, indicating that the salinity stress would affect the regulation of metabolism and immunity in oysters. 248 metabolites significantly changed in response to depuration salinity stress in oysters, including phosphate organic acids and their derivatives, lipids, etc. The results of integrated omics analysis indicated that the depuration salinity stress induced abnormal metabolism of the citrate cycle (TCA cycle), lipid metabolism, glycolysis, nucleotide metabolism, ribosome, ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transport pathway, etc. By contrast with Pro-depuration, more radical responses were observed in the S38 group. Based on the results, we suggested that the 10% salinity fluctuation was suitable for oyster depuration and the combination of multi-omics analysis could provide a new perspective for the analysis of the mechanism changes.

Abstract
The Pacific oyster could be affected by several pressure sources during cold chain logistics, which reduce the quality of oyster, and even improve its mortality. For improving the quality of oyster, the effects of depuration process at different cooling rates (1, 3, 7, 11 and 16 °C/h) on selected Pacific oyster were studied. The results indicated that extreme fluctuations in the depuration temperatures could affect the survival rates and qualities of oysters. The oysters exhibited low survival rates, glycogen contents and pH values at an increased cooling rate. Their contents in the 1 °C/h group after 3 d preservation were 100 %, 16.30 ± 1.64 mg/100 g and 6.72 ± 0.01, respectively, while there were 71 %, 7.72 ± 0.88 mg/100 g and 6.53 ± 0.01 in the 16 °C/h group after 3 d preservation, respectively. Furthermore, the ATP-related compounds were affected by the different cooling rates. AMP and IMP were the main ATP-related compounds, and their contents in the 1 °C/h group after 3 d preservation were 37.21 ± 1.10 mg/100 g and 29.47 ± 1.10 mg/100 g, respectively, while there were 32.07 ± 1.10 mg/100 g and 13.16 ± 1.60 mg/100 g in the 16 °C/h group after 3 d preservation, respectively. The proportions of the total umami, as well as the sweet amino acids also decreased, the proportions of the umami amino acids and sweet amino acids in the total amino acids, were 31.37%-38.80%, and their proportions in 1 °C/h group were higher than that in 16 °C/h group. Conversely, the fatty acid content of each group exhibited significant differences. Combined with the above results, the oyster maintained a high survival rate and higher quality at a cooling rate of 1 °C/h during depuration.
