Facile fabrication of organic superhydrophobic corn silk-derived cellulose acetate nanofiber for the effective sequestration of oil from oil-water mixture

Oil spills and subsequent cleanup by oil-water separation remain a global concern. For the first time, corn silk-derived cellulose acetate (CSCA) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) composite nanofiber are reported to create a superhydrophobic oil-water sequestration membrane. CA : PAN solutions with various PAN concentrations were evaluated for viscosity and conductivity. A CSCA nanofiber membrane was fabricated through electrospinning, which was superhydrophobic and oleophilic in water. Scanning electron microscope, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis/differential scanning calorimetry were used to analyze the membrane's morphological features. CSCA nanofibers formed a highly spherical bead with a maximum contact angle of 156° (>120°) in pure water solutions, demonstrating their superhydrophobicity. This study found that membranes can remove oil from oil-water mixtures and emulsions, as gravity is the only force required for propelling the system. Mineral oil had the highest oil sorption capability (908%), while toluene had the lowest (664%). For mineral oil-water mixtures, the CSCA membrane has the greatest separation flux at a maximum of 442 L/m2/h and the best separation efficiency at up to 99.67%. These findings provide strong support for using an as-prepared CSCA nanofiber membrane as a viable reusable oil sorbent in oil spill cleaning.

Functionalized nanofibers in gas sorption process: a critical review on the challenges and prospective research

Air pollution has become the most important environmental and human health threat as it is accounting for about 7 million deaths across the globe every year. Particulate matter (PM) derived from the combustion of fossil fuels, biomass, and other agricultural residues pollutes the atmospheric air which affects the quality of the environment and poses a great threat to human health. Ecological imbalance, climatic variation, and cardiovascular and respiratory problems among humans are significant extortions due to PM pollution. Scientific approaches were initiated to limit the levels of PM in the atmospheric air and the use of nanofiber mats has received wide attention as these possess versatile properties including nanoscale-sized pore structure, homogeneity in their size distribution with high specific surface area, and low basis weight. To exploit their filtration potential towards wide classes of pollutants and also to enhance the capturing efficacy, functionalized nanofibers are currently in practice with tailor-made modifications on the surface. The present review provides a comprehensive report on the different fabrication processes of functionalized nanofibers along with the controlling factors affecting the efficacy of the gas separation process. Also, it provides technical insights on the mass transfer aspects of PM filtration by elucidation their mechanism which can provide vital information on the rate-controlling diffusive flux(es). Conclusively, the practical challenges encountered in the large-scale air filtration systems such as filter cleaning, flow-rate regulation, pressure drop, and extent of reusability are discussed, and the review has identified potential gaps in the current research and can be considered for the prospective research in the area of PM separation process.

Sustainable application of nanoparticles in wastewater treatment: Fate, current trend & paradigm shift

Existing water and wastewater treatment techniques are becoming increasingly difficult to employ due to the discovery of new toxins, the rapid development of population and industrial activities, and the limited quantity of water resources. Treatment of wastewater is a critical need in modern civilization due to a scarcity of water resources and rising industrial activity. Some of the techniques utilized include adsorption, flocculation, filtration, and others, although they are only used for primary wastewater treatment. However, the development and deployment of modern wastewater management with high efficiency and low capitalization are critical in terms of mitigating the environmental consequences of waste. The employment of different nanomaterials in the treatment of wastewater has opened up a world of possibilities for heavy metal and pesticide removal, as well as the treatment of microbes and organic contaminants in wastewater. Nanotechnology is a rapidly evolving technology because of certain nanoparticle's outstanding physiochemical and biological capabilities as contrasted to bulk counterparts. Secondly, it has been established that this is a cost-effective treatment strategy with significant potential in wastewater management, transcending the limitations imposed by currently existing technology. Advances in nanotechnology to reduce water contamination have been presented in this review, including the use of various nanomaterials such as nanocatalysts, nanoadsorbents, and nanomembranes in the treatment of wastewater containing organic contaminants, hazardous metals, and virulent pathogens.

Adsorption kinetics and mechanism of atrazine on iron-modified algal residue biochar in the presence of soil

Atrazine has been widely used as an herbicide, and its harm has attracted more and more attention. In this study, magnetic algal residue biochar (MARB) was prepared from algae residue, a by-product of aquaculture, by ball milling it with ferric oxide to study the adsorption and removal of the triazine herbicide atrazine in a soil medium. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm results showed that atrazine removal by MARB reached 95.5% within 8 h at a concentration of 10 mg·L^-1, but the removal rate dropped to 78.4% in the soil medium. The pseudo-first- and pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherms best described atrazine adsorption on MARB. It is estimated that the maximum adsorption capacity of MARB can reach 10.63 mg·g^-1. The effects of pH, humic acids, and cations on the adsorption performance of MARB for atrazine were also studied. When pH was 3, the adsorption capacity of MARB was twice that of other pHs. Only in the presence of 50 mg·L^-1 HA and 0.1 mol·L^-1 NH₄⁺, Na, and K, the adsorption capacity of MARB to AT decreased by 8% and 13%, respectively. The results showed that MARB had a stable removal profile over a wide range of conditions. The adsorption mechanisms involved multiple interaction forms, among which the introduction of iron oxide promoted hydrogen bonding formation and π-π interactions by enriching -OH and -COO on the surface of MARB. Overall, the magnetic biochar prepared in this study can be used as an effective adsorbent to remove atrazine in complex environments and is ideal for algal biomass waste treatment and environmental governance.^+.
