Abstract
Lactic acid is a versatile building block that can be produced via microbial fermentation. Owing to the high optical purity, approximately 90 % of lactic acid is produced by microbes. Recently, the biosynthesis of lactic acid from lignocellulose has concerned much attentions. However, the cost-effective process faces several obstacles because of the complex structure of lignocellulose. This review will comprehensively summarize the state-of-the-art lactic acid production from lignocellulose, including the commonly used lactate-producing microorganisms, the co-utilization of glucose and xylose for the lactic acid production, as well as the lactic acid production from lignocellulose hydrolysate. Furthermore, the strategies regarding the lignocellulosic lactic acid production via consolidated bioprocessing will be also discussed, which can greatly reduce the complexity of the fermentation process.

Abstract
Lactic acid (LA) is a crucial chemical which has been widely used for industrial application. Microbial fermentation is the dominant pathway for LA production and has been regarded as the promising technology. In recent years, many studies on LA production from various organic wastes have been published, which provided alternative ways to reduce the LA production cost, and further recycle organic wastes. However, few researchers focused on industrial application of this technology due to the knowledge gap and some uncertainties. In this review, the recent advances, basic knowledge and limitations of LA fermentation from organic wastes are discussed, the challenges and suitable envisaged solutions for enhancing LA yield and productivity are provided to realize industrial application of this technology, and also some perspectives are given to further valorize the LA fermentation processes from organic wastes. This review can be a useful guidance for industrial LA production from organic wastes on a sustainable view.

Abstract
Macroalgae biomass has been considered as a promising renewable feedstock for lactic acid production owing to its lignin-free, high carbohydrate content and high productivity. Herein, the D-lactic acid production from red macroalgae Gelidium amansii by Pediococcus acidilactici was investigated. The fermentable sugars in G. amansii acid-prehydrolysate were mainly galactose and glucose with a small amounts of xylose. P. acidilactici could simultaneously ferment the mixed sugars of galactose, glucose and xylose into D-lactic acid at high yield (0.90 g/g), without carbon catabolite repression (CCR). The assimilating pathways of these sugars in P. acidilactici were proposed based on the whole genome sequences. Simultaneous saccharification and co-fermentation (SSCF) of the pretreated and biodetoxified G. amansii was also conducted, a record high of D-lactic acid (41.4 g/L) from macroalgae biomass with the yield of 0.34 g/g dry feedstock was achieved. This study provided an important biorefinery strain for D-lactic acid production from macroalgae biomass.

Abstract
This work presents an integrated approach for the extraction of lipids from marine macroalgae using RSM optimization and thermo-kinetic analysis. The lipids were extracted from marine macroalgal biomass using a Soxhlet extractor. The Soxhlet extraction parameters, including temperature (60-80 °C), solvent-to-algae ratio (3:1-7:1), algal particle size (0.05-0.25 mm), and extraction time (60-180 min), were optimized using RSM to achieve the maximum possible lipid extraction yield from marine macroalgae. The highest lipid extraction yield of 12.76% was obtained using the optimized conditions, which included an extraction temperature of 72 °C, a solvent-to-algae ratio of 5:1, an algal particle size of 0.16 mm, and an extraction time of 134 min. The kinetic analysis revealed an activation energy of 52.79 kJ mol-1 for the Soxhlet extraction process. The thermodynamic analysis of the Soxhlet extraction process demonstrated the following results: ΔH = 49.98 kJ mol-1, ΔS = -128.24 J K-1 mol-1, and ΔG = 93.98 kJ mol-1. The GC-MS analysis confirmed that the extracted algal lipids exhibited a composition of 14.20% palmitic acid, 4.89% stearic acid, and 76.97% oleic acid. The physiochemical analysis ensured that the extracted algal lipids possess excellent qualities, making them desirable for sustainable biofuel production.

Abstract
The demand for lactic acid and lactic acid-derived products in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries is increasing year by year. In recent decades, the synthesis of lactic acid by microbials has gained much attention from scientists due to the superior optical purity of the product, its low production costs, and its higher production efficiency compared to chemical synthesis. Microbial fermentation involves the selection of feedstock, strains, and fermentation modes. Each step can potentially affect the yield and purity of the final product. Therefore, there are still many critical challenges in lactic acid production. The costs of feedstocks and energy; the inhibition of substrates and end-product; the sensitivity to the inhibitory compounds released during pretreatment; and the lower optical purity are the main obstacles hindering the fermentation of lactic acid. This review highlights the limitations and challenges of applying microbial fermentation in lactic acid production. In addition, corresponding solutions to these difficulties are summarized in order to provide some guidance for the industrial production of lactic acid.

Catalytic Conversion of Sugars into Lactic Acid via a RuOx/MoS2 Catalyst. Catalysts 2023. Abstract
The catalytic transformation of sugars into lactic acid has shown great potential for the scalable utilization of renewable biomass. Herein, RuOx/MoS2 catalysts were synthesized with the assistance of CaO for the one-pot conversion of glucose to lactic acid. Under the reaction conditions of 120 °C and 1MPa O2, a 96.6% glucose conversion and a 54.3% lactic acid yield were realized in the one-pot catalytic reaction, with relatively high stability after four successive cycles. This catalytic system was also effective for the conversion of many other carbohydrate substrates, such as fructose, xylose and cellulose (selectivity 68.9%, 78.2% and 50.6%, respectively). According to catalyst characterizations and conditional experiments, the highly dispersed RuOx species on the surface of MoS2, together with OH−, promoted isomerization, retro-aldol condensation, dehydration and hydration reactions, resulting in a relatively high lactic acid yield for sugar conversions.
