Cerium oxide nanoparticles alleviates stress in wheat grown on Cd contaminated alkaline soil

Heavy metal immobilization and radish growth improvement using Ca(OH)2-treated cypress biochar in contaminated soil

Heavy metal contamination poses a significant threat to soil quality, plant growth, and food safety, and directly affects multiple UN SDGs. Addressing this issue and offering a remediation solution are vital for human health. One effective approach for immobilizing heavy metals involves impregnating cypress chips with calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) to enhance the chemical adsorption capacity of the resulting woody charcoal. In the present study, un-treated cypress biochar (UCBC) and calcium-treated cypress biochar (TCBC), were introduced into pristine and contaminated soil, at rates of 3, 6, and 9% (w/w). Both BCs were alkaline (UCBC pH: 8.9, TCBC pH: 9.7) with high specific surface area, which improved the soil properties (pH, EC, and OM). Radish (Raphanus sativus) cultivated in pots revealed that both UCBC and TCBC demonstrated significant improvements in growth attributes and heavy metal immobilization compared to the control, with TCBC exhibiting superior effects. The TCBC surface showed highly active nanosized precipitated calcium carbonate particles that were active in immobilizing heavy metals. The application of TCBC at a rate of 9% resulted in a substantial reduction in Zn and Cu uptake by radish roots and shoots. In contaminated soil, Zn uptake by radish roots decreased by 55% (68.3-31.0 mg kg-1), and shoots by 37% (49.3-31.0 mg kg-1); Cu uptake decreased by 40% (38.6-23.2 mg kg-1) in roots and 39% (58.2-35.2 mg kg-1) in shoots. Uptake of Pb was undetectable after TCBC application. Principal component analysis (PCA) highlighted the potential of TCBC over UCBC in reducing heavy metal concentrations and promoting radish growth. Future research should consider the long-term effects and microbial interactions of TCBC application.

Mitigating cadmium accumulation and toxicity in plants: The promising role of nanoparticles

Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic heavy metal that adversely affects humans, animals, and plants, even at low concentrations. It is widely distributed and has both natural and anthropogenic sources. Plants readily absorb and distribute Cd in different parts. It may subsequently enter the food chain posing a risk to human health as it is known to be carcinogenic. Cd has a long half-life, resulting in its persistence in plants and animals. Cd toxicity disrupts crucial physiological and biochemical processes in plants, including reactive oxygen species (ROS) homeostasis, enzyme activities, photosynthesis, and nutrient uptake, leading to stunted growth and reduced biomass. Although plants have developed defense mechanisms to mitigate these damages, they are often inadequate to combat high Cd concentrations, resulting in yield losses. Nanoparticles (NPs), typically smaller than 100 nm, possess unique properties such as a large surface area and small size, making them highly reactive compared to their larger counterparts. NPs from diverse sources have shown potential for various agricultural applications, including their use as fertilizers, pesticides, and stress alleviators. Recently, NPs have emerged as a promising strategy to mitigate heavy metal stress, including Cd toxicity. They offer advantages, such as efficient absorption by crop plants, the reduction of Cd uptake, and the enhancement of mineral nutrition, antioxidant defenses, photosynthetic parameters, anatomical structure, and agronomic traits in Cd-stressed plants. The complex interaction of NPs with calcium ions (Ca2+), intracellular ROS, nitric oxide (NO), and phytohormones likely plays a significant role in alleviating Cd stress. This review aims to explore the positive impacts of diverse NPs in reducing Cd accumulation and toxicity while investigating their underlying mechanisms of action. Additionally, it discusses research gaps, recent advancements, and future prospects of utilizing NPs to alleviate Cd-induced stress, ultimately promoting improved plant growth and yield.

Effect of green synthesized cerium oxide nanoparticles on fungal disease of wheat plants: A field study

Recently, there has been considerable attention towards the production of environmentally friendly nanoparticles (NPs). In this investigation, the successful synthesis of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs) was achieved by employing an eco-friendly technique that utilized an extract from the leaves of local plant quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa L.). The synthesized CeO2 NPs were subjected to characterization using state-of-the-art methods. The prepared CeO2 NPs contained a round shape with clusters and have a size of 7-10 nm. To assess how effective CeO2 NPs derived from C. quinoa were against Ustilago tritici, a fungal disease that negatively affects wheat crop globally, a study was performed on two varieties of wheat crop comprised of Arooj (V1) and Akber (V2), cultivated under field conditions. CeO2 NPs were applied foliarly twice to the wheat crop at four different concentrations: T0 (0 mg/L), T1 (50 mg/L), T2 (75 mg/L), and T3 (100 mg/L). The results revealed that the control group (T0) exhibited the highest disease severity index (DSI) with a value of 75% compared to the other concentrations of CeO2 NPs on both varieties. At a concentration of 100 mg/L of CeO2 NPs, the DSI dropped to a minimum of 35% and 37% on both V1 and V2 respectively. These findings indicated that an increase in the concentration of CeO2 NPs has a beneficial impact on disease severity. Similar patterns have also been observed with disease incidence (DI), with the greatest efficacy observed at a concentration of 100 mg/L of CeO2 NPs. Our investigation has shown that CeO2 NPs exhibitd significant antifungal potential against U. tritici which may be a promising strategy to mitigate fungal disease and crop losses globally.
