Abstract
We present a detailed theoretical analysis of polarized absorption spectra and linear dichroism of cyanine dye aggregates whose unit cells contain two molecules. The studied threadlike ordered system with a molecular exciton delocalized along its axis can be treated as two chains of conventional molecular aggregates, rotated relative to each other at a certain angle around the aggregate axis. Our approach is based on the general formulas for the effective cross section of light absorption by a molecular aggregate and key points of the molecular exciton theory. We have developed a self-consistent theory for describing the orientational effects in the absorption and dichroic spectra of such supramolecular structures with nonplanar unit cell. It is shown that the spectral behavior of such systems exhibits considerable distinctions from that of conventional cyanine dye aggregates. They consist in the strong dependence of the relative intensities of the J- and H-type spectral bands of the aggregate with a nonplanar unit cell on the angles determining the mutual orientations of the transition dipole moments of constituting molecules and the aggregate axis as well as on the polarization direction of incident light. The derived formulas are reduced to the well-known analytical expressions in the particular case of aggregates with one molecule in the unit cell. The calculations performed within the framework of our excitonic theory combined with available vibronic theory allow us to quite reasonably explain the experimental data for the pseudoisocyanine bromide dye aggregate.

Abstract
The exciton, an excited electron-hole pair bound by Coulomb attraction, plays a key role in photophysics of organic molecules and drives practically important phenomena such as photoinduced mechanical motions of a molecule, photochemical conversions, energy transfer, generation of free charge carriers, etc. Its behavior in extended π-conjugated molecules and disordered organic films is very different and very rich compared with exciton behavior in inorganic semiconductor crystals. Due to the high degree of variability of organic systems themselves, the exciton not only exerts changes on molecules that carry it but undergoes its own changes during all phases of its lifetime, that is, birth, conversion and transport, and decay. The goal of this review is to give a systematic and comprehensive view on exciton behavior in π-conjugated molecules and molecular assemblies at all phases of exciton evolution with emphasis on rates typical for this dynamic picture and various consequences of the above dynamics. To uncover the rich variety of exciton behavior, details of exciton formation, exciton transport, exciton energy conversion, direct and reverse intersystem crossing, and radiative and nonradiative decay are considered in different systems, where these processes lead to or are influenced by static and dynamic disorder, charge distribution symmetry breaking, photoinduced reactions, electron and proton transfer, structural rearrangements, exciton coupling with vibrations and intermediate particles, and exciton dissociation and annihilation as well.

Abstract
We computed the optical properties of a large set of molecular crystals (∼2200 structures) composed of molecules whose lowest excited states are strongly coupled and generate wide excitonic bands. Such bands are classified in terms of their dimensionality (1-, 2-, and 3-dimensional), the position of the optically allowed state in relation with the excitonic density of states, and the presence of Davydov splitting. The survey confirms that one-dimensional aggregates are rare in molecular crystals highlighting the need to go beyond the simple low-dimensional models. Furthermore, this large set of data is used to search for technologically interesting and less common properties. For instance, we considered the largest excitonic bandwidth that is achievable within known molecular crystals and identified materials with strong super-radiant states. Finally, we explored the possibility that strong excitonic coupling can be used to generate emissive states in the near-infrared region in materials formed by molecules with bright visible absorption and we could identify the maximum allowable red shift in this material class. These insights with the associated searchable database provide practical guidelines for designing materials with interesting optical properties.

Abstract
The exciton dynamics of pseudoisocyanine (PIC) is reported during the formation of a thin film dropcast from solution. Tilted pump pulses are used to spatially encode a pump-probe time delay, enabling the collection of a transient in a single shot. We demonstrate that a spatially encoded delay can be used to accurately measure exciton dynamics in thin-film samples, with a signal-to-noise ratio above 20 attained in 2 s. We report in situ linear absorption, fluorescence, and transient absorption measurements during the molecular aggregation of PIC. These measurements reveal a highly fluorescent intermediate stage during thin-film formation that we ascribe to J-aggregates, in contrast to the final, less fluorescent, dry thin film that exhibits photophysics indicative of disordered J-aggregates. The ability to measure exciton dynamics in situ during materials formation will provide a deeper understanding of how functional materials properties evolve, and will enable direct feedback for rational materials design.

Abstract
The electronic excited states of molecular aggregates and their photophysical signatures have long fascinated spectroscopists and theoreticians alike since the advent of Frenkel exciton theory almost 90 years ago. The influence of molecular packing on basic optical probes like absorption and photoluminescence was originally worked out by Kasha for aggregates dominated by Coulombic intermolecular interactions, eventually leading to the classification of J- and H-aggregates. This review outlines advances made in understanding the relationship between aggregate structure and photophysics when vibronic coupling and intermolecular charge transfer are incorporated. An assortment of packing geometries is considered from the humble molecular dimer to more exotic structures including linear and bent aggregates, two-dimensional herringbone and "HJ" aggregates, and chiral aggregates. The interplay between long-range Coulomb coupling and short-range charge-transfer-mediated coupling strongly depends on the aggregate architecture leading to a wide array of photophysical behaviors.

Abstract
The monomer-aggregate equilibrium of four phenothiazine (PN) dyes, containing thionine (TH), methylene blue (MB), new methylene blue (NMB), and 1,9-dimethylmethylene blue (DMB), in the tungsten(VI) oxide (WO(3)) nanocolloid solution has been investigated by means of UV-vis spectroscopy. Addition of PN dye into the WO(3) nanocolloid solution brought about significant changes in the absorption spectrum, suggesting the formation of H-type (face-to-face fashion) trimer on the WO(3) nanocolloid surface. The adsorptivity of PN dyes onto the WO(3) nanocolloid surface was diminished by the raising the ionic strength, indicating the evidence of the electrostatic interaction between cationic PN dye and negatively charged WO(3) nanocolloids. The detail analysis of each spectral data provided insight into the effect of molecular structure of PN dyes on the adsorption and aggregation behaviors on the WO(3) nanocolloid surface. Moreover, in situ measurement of PN dye aggregation using the centrifugal liquid membrane (CLM) technique revealed that the aggregation of PN dyes on the WO(3) nanocolloid surface proceeded in a two-step three-stage (monomer --> dimer --> trimer) formation. The aggregation mechanism of PN dyes on the WO(3) nanocolloid surface was discussed on the basis of Kasha's exciton theory.

Abstract
Signatures of "strong" J and "weak" K exciton couplings in the nonlinear femtosecond optical response of the FMO photosynthetic complex are identified. The two types of couplings originate from interactions of molecular transition charge dipoles and change of molecular permanent dipoles in their ground and excited states, respectively. We demonstrate that by combining various two-dimensional optical signals it should be possible to invert spectroscopic data to reconstruct the full exciton Hamiltonian (energies and couplings).
