Advances and challenges in designing active site environments in zeolites for Brønsted acid catalysis

Zeolites contain proton active sites in diverse void environments that stabilize the reactive intermediates and transition states formed in converting hydrocarbons and oxygenates to chemicals and energy carriers. The catalytic diversity that exists among active sites in voids of varying sizes and shapes, even within a given zeolite topology, has motivated research efforts to position and quantify active sites within distinct voids (synthesis-structure) and to link active site environment to catalytic behavior (structure-reactivity). This Feature Article describes advances and challenges in controlling the position of framework Al centers and associated protons within distinct voids during zeolite synthesis or post-synthetic modification, in identifying and quantifying distinct active site environments using characterization techniques, and in determining the influence of active site environments on catalysis. During zeolite synthesis, organic structure directing agents (SDAs) influence Al substitution at distinct lattice positions via intermolecular interactions (e.g., electrostatics, hydrogen bonding) that depend on the size, structure, and charge distribution of organic SDAs and their mobility when confined within zeolitic voids. Complementary post-synthetic strategies to alter intrapore active site distributions include the selective removal of protons by differently-sized titrants or unreactive organic residues and the selective exchange of framework heteroatoms of different reactivities, but remain limited to certain zeolite frameworks. The ability to identify and quantify active sites within distinct intrapore environments depends on the resolution with which a given characterization technique can distinguish Al T-site positions or proton environments in a given zeolite framework. For proton sites in external unconfined environments, various (post-)synthetic strategies exist to control their amounts, with quantitative methods to distinguish them from internal sites that largely depend on using stoichiometric or catalytic probes that only interact with external sites. Protons in different environments influence reactivity by preferentially stabilizing larger transition states over smaller precursor states and influence selectivity by preferentially stabilizing or destabilizing competing transition states of varying sizes that share a common precursor state. We highlight opportunities to address challenges encountered in the design of active site environments in zeolites by closely integrating precise (post-)synthetic methods, validated characterization techniques, well-defined kinetic probes, and properly calibrated theoretical models. Further advances in understanding the molecular details that underlie synthesis-structure-reactivity relationships for active site environments in zeolite catalysis can accelerate the predictive design of tailored zeolites for desired catalytic transformations.

Development of Methodology for molecular crystallization of Menthol

Menthol, terpene alcohol with a strong minty, cooling odor and taste is highly popular in food, flavor, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Crystallization of menthol from mint oil is a tedious process involving high cost and a much longer period. The present study has been undertaken to devise a new method with low input and with higher production rates. The crystallization of menthol was performed by the methods including Temperature programmed cooling process (TPCP); Short-path molecular fractional distillation (SPMFD) and Stripping crystallization (SC). About 99 % menthol contained in the mint oil was recovered during the crystallization process. The characterization techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for surface morphology, x-ray diffraction (XRD) for crystal structure and crystallite size evaluation, and FTIR and Raman spectroscopy for analyzing the chemical nature of the crystals.

Poly(allylamine)-adorned heptylcarboxymethyl galactomannan nanocarriers of canagliflozin for controlling type-2 diabetes: Optimization by Box-Behnken design and in vivo performance

In the past three decades, the prevalence of type-2 diabetes has arisen dramatically in countries of all income levels. A novel, most effective nanotechnology-based strategy may reduce the prevalence of diabetes. Recently, the shell-crosslinked polysaccharide-based micellar nanocarriers (MNCs) have shown great promise in terms of stability, controlled drug release, and improved in vivo performance. In this study, heptyl carboxymethyl guar gum was synthesized and characterized by ATR-FTIR, 1HNMR spectroscopy, surface charge, critical micelle concentration (23.9 μg/mL), and cytotoxicity analysis. Box-Behnken design was used to optimize the diameter, zeta potential, drug entrapment efficiency (DEE), and drug release characteristics of poly (allylamine)-crosslinked MNCs containing canagliflozin. The optimized MNCs revealed spherical morphology under TEM and had 149.3 nm diameter (PDI 21.2 %), +53.8 mV zeta potential, and 84 % DEE. The MNCs released about 63 % of the drug in 12 h under varying pH of the simulated gastrointestinal fluid. DSC and x-ray analyses suggested amorphous dispersion of drugs in the MNCs. CAM assay demonstrated the biocompatibility of the MNCs. The MNCs showed hemolysis of <1 %, 85 % mucin adsorption, and stability over three months. The MNCs demonstrated excellent anti-diabetic efficacy in streptozotocin-nicotinamide-induced diabetic rats, continuously lowering blood glucose levels up to 12 h.

A Highly Conductive n-Type Conjugated Polymer Synthesized in Water

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is a benchmark hole-transporting (p-type) polymer that finds applications in diverse electronic devices. Most of its success is due to its facile synthesis in water, exceptional processability from aqueous solutions, and outstanding electrical performance in ambient. Applications in fields like (opto-)electronics, bioelectronics, and energy harvesting/storage devices often necessitate the complementary use of both p-type and n-type (electron-transporting) materials. However, the availability of n-type materials amenable to water-based polymerization and processing remains limited. Herein, we present a novel synthesis method enabling direct polymerization in water, yielding a highly conductive, water-processable n-type conjugated polymer, namely, poly[(2,2'-(2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-phenylene)diacetic acid)-stat-3,7-dihydrobenzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']difuran-2,6-dione] (PDADF), with remarkable electrical conductivity as high as 66 S cm-1, ranking among the highest for n-type polymers processed using green solvents. The new n-type polymer PDADF also exhibits outstanding stability, maintaining 90% of its initial conductivity after 146 days of storage in air. Our synthetic approach, along with the novel polymer it yields, promises significant advancements for the sustainable development of organic electronic materials and devices.

In Situ Probing the Structure Change and Interaction of Interfacial Water and Hydroxyl Intermediates on Ni(OH)2 Surface over Water Splitting

There is growing acknowledgment that the properties of the electrochemical interfaces play an increasingly pivotal role in improving the performance of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, we present, for the first time, direct dynamic spectral evidence illustrating the impact of the interaction between interfacial water molecules and adsorbed hydroxyl species (OHad) on the HER properties of Ni(OH)2 using Au/core-Ni(OH)2/shell nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. Notably, our findings highlight that the interaction between OHad and interfacial water molecules promotes the formation of weakly hydrogen-bonded water, fostering an environment conducive to improving the HER performance. Furthermore, the participation of OHad in the reaction is substantiated by the observed deprotonation step of Au@2 nm Ni(OH)2 during the HER process. This phenomenon is corroborated by the phase transition of Ni(OH)2 to NiO, as verified through Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The significant redshift in the OH-stretching frequency of water molecules during the phase transition confirms that surface OHad disrupts the hydrogen-bond network of interfacial water molecules. Through manipulation of the shell thickness of Au@Ni(OH)2, we additionally validate the interaction between OHad and interfacial water molecules. In summary, our insights emphasize the potential of electrochemical interfacial engineering as a potent approach to enhance electrocatalytic performance.

Controllable Solid Electrolyte Interphase by Ionic Environment Regulation for Stable Zn-Ion Battery

Artificial solid electrolyte interphase in organic solutions is effective and facile for long-cycling aqueous zinc ion batteries. However, the specific effects on different ionic environments have not been thoroughly investigated. Herein, pyromellitic acid (PA) are employed as organic ligand to coordinate with Zn2+ under various ionic environments. The connection between the ionic environment and reaction spontaneity is analyzed to provide insights into the reasons behind the effectiveness of the SEI layer and to characterize its protective impact on the zinc anode. Notably, the PA solution (pH4) lacking OH- contributes to the formation of a dense and ultrathin SEI with Zn-PA coordination, preventing direct contact between the anode and electrolyte. Moreover, the presence of organic functional groups facilitates a uniform flux of Zn2+. These advantages enable stable cycling of the PA4-Zn symmetric cell at a current density of 3 mA cm-2 for over 3500 h. The PA4-Zn//MVO full cell demonstrates excellent electrochemical reversibility. Investigating the influence of the ionic environment on SEI generation informs the development of novel SEI strategies.

Di-aldehyde tunicate cellulose nanocrystal (D-tCNC) aerogels for drug delivery: Effect of D-tCNC composition on aerogel structure and release properties

Aerogels as drug carriers have the characteristics of a large specific surface area, high porosity and an elastic skeleton structure. Compared with traditional drug carriers, the use of aerogels as drug carriers can avoid the complexity of drug delivery and improve the efficiency of drug loading. In this work, the oxidation of tunicate cellulose nanocrystals (tCNCs) with NaIO4 was used to prepare di-aldehyde tunicate cellulose nanocrystals (D-tCNCs). Tetracycline (TC) was used as a drug model and pH-responsive drug-loaded aerogels were prepared by the Schiff base reaction between TC and the aldehyde group on D-tCNCs. The chemical structure, crystallinity, morphology, compression properties, porosity, swelling rate and drug loading properties were investigated by FT-IR, XRD, SEM and universal testing machines. The results showed that the porosity and equilibrium swelling ratio of the D-tCNC-TC aerogels were 95.87 % and 17.52 g/g, respectively. The stress of the D-tCNC-TC aerogel at 15 % compression was 0.07 MPa. Moreover, the analysis of drug-loaded aerogels indicated that the drug loading and encapsulation rates of D-tCNC-TC aerogels were 16.86 % and 78.75 %, respectively. In in vitro release experiments, the cumulative release rate of drug-loaded aerogel at pH = 1.2 and pH = 7.4 was 87.5 % and 79.3 %, respectively. These results indicated that D-tCNC-TC aerogels have good drug loading capacity and are pH-responsive in the pH range of 1.2 to 7.4. The prepared D-tCNC-TC aerogels are expected to be applied in drug delivery systems.

Non-cytotoxic, highly functionalized cellulose nanocrystals with high crystallinity and thermal stability derived from a novel agromass of Elettaria cardamomum, using a soft and benign mild oxalic acid hydrolysis

Non-cytotoxic, highly crystalline, and functionalized, thermally stable cellulose nanocrystals are extracted from the stems of Elettaria cardamom, a novel underutilised agromass, by employing a neat green, mild oxalic acid hydrolysis. The protocol involves a chemo-mechanical strategy of coupling hydrolysis with steam explosion and homogenization. The obtained CNC showed a crystallinity index of 81.51 %, an aspect ratio of 17.80 ± 1.03 and a high degradation temperature of about 339.07 °C. The extraction procedure imparted a high negative surface functionalization with a zeta potential value of -34.244 ± 0.496 mV and a polydispersity of 16.5 %. The CNC had no antibacterial activity, according to non-cytotoxic experiments conducted on four bacterial strains. This supports the notion of "One Health" in the context of AMR by demonstrating the safety of antibiotic resistance due to consistent exposure upon environmental disposal. The as-extracted nanocellulose crystals can be a potential candidate for commercial application in wide and diversified disciplines like food packaging, anti-infective surfaces for medical devices, biosensors, bioelectronics etc.

Simultaneous Inhibition of Zn Dendrites and Polyiodide Ions Shuttle Effect by an Anion Concentrated Electrolyte Membrane for Long Lifespan Aqueous Zinc-Iodine Batteries

Aqueous zinc-iodine (Zn-I2) batteries have attracted extensive attention due to their merits of inherent safety, wide natural abundance, and low cost. However, their application is seriously hindered by the irreversible capacity loss resulting from both anode and cathode. Herein, an anion concentrated electrolyte (ACE) membrane is designed to manipulate the Zn2+ ion flux on the zinc anode side and restrain the shuttle effect of polyiodide ions on the I2 cathode side simultaneously to realize long-lifetime separator-free Zn-I2 batteries. The ACE membrane with abundant sulfonic acid groups possesses a multifunctional amalgamation of good mechanical strength, guided Zn2+ ion transport, and effective charge repulsion of polyiodide ions. Moreover, rich ether oxygen, carbonyl, and S-O bonds in anionic polymer chains will form hydrogen bonds with water to reduce the proportion of free water in the ACE membrane, inhibiting the water-induced interfacial side reactions of the Zn metal anode. Besides, DFT calculations and in-situ UV-vis and in situ Raman results reveal that the shuttle effect of polyiodide ions is also significantly suppressed. Therefore, the ACE membrane enables a long lifespan of Zn anodes (3700 h) and excellent cycling stability of Zn-I2 batteries (10000 cycles), thus establishing a substantial base for their practical applications.

Production of single-component cellulose-based hydrogel and its utilization as adsorbent for aqueous contaminants

The growing concern for the environment has resulted in renewed interest in bio-based resources. This study aims to produce a hydrogel adsorbent from cellulose and examine its adsorption performance. In pursuit of this goal, we report a simple one-pot synthesis of cellulose acetate sulfate (CAS), followed by the formation of CAS hydrogels and their subsequent adsorption performances. The CAS includes both hydrophilic and hydrophobic functional groups, enable the formation of a single-component hydrogel through intermolecular interactions in deionized water. The thermal reversibility of CAS hydrogels makes them easily processable into various shapes. The durability of the CAS hydrogel adsorbents can be improved by introducing divalent cations (e.g., Ca²⁺), which create ionically crosslinked hydrogels. The ionically a crosslinked CAS hydrogel adsorbent exhibits a maximum adsorption capacity of 245 mg/g for methylene blue (MB) at 23 °C and a pH of 7. The adsorption behavior of MB on the CAS hydrogel follows both the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. Furthermore, the CAS hydrogel adsorbent maintains a 70 % removal ratio after five cycles. The simplicity of synthesis and hydrogel formation opens up new possibilities for producing and utilizing cellulose-based hydrogels as adsorbents for aqueous contaminants.

Reconstructing the infrared spectrum of a peptide from representative conformers of the full canonical ensemble

Leucine enkephalin (LeuEnk), a biologically active endogenous opioid pentapeptide, has been under intense investigation because it is small enough to allow efficient use of sophisticated computational methods and large enough to provide insights into low-lying minima of its conformational space. Here, we reproduce and interpret experimental infrared (IR) spectra of this model peptide in gas phase using a combination of replica-exchange molecular dynamics simulations, machine learning, and ab initio calculations. In particular, we evaluate the possibility of averaging representative structural contributions to obtain an accurate computed spectrum that accounts for the corresponding canonical ensemble of the real experimental situation. Representative conformers are identified by partitioning the conformational phase space into subensembles of similar conformers. The IR contribution of each representative conformer is calculated from ab initio and weighted according to the population of each cluster. Convergence of the averaged IR signal is rationalized by merging contributions in a hierarchical clustering and the comparison to IR multiple photon dissociation experiments. The improvements achieved by decomposing clusters containing similar conformations into even smaller subensembles is strong evidence that a thorough assessment of the conformational landscape and the associated hydrogen bonding is a prerequisite for deciphering important fingerprints in experimental spectroscopic data.

Proton Configuration in Water Chain on Pt(533)

In this paper, a wetting behavior of Pt(533) is studied by using heterodyne-detected vibrational sum-frequency generation spectroscopy under an ultrahigh-vacuum condition at 145 K. The imaginary parts of the surface nonlinear susceptibility (Imχ⁽²⁾) of the H-bonded OH stretching region are successfully obtained for submonolayer water coverage that show negative bands indicating H-down (proton pointing to the substrate) configurations both for the water at the step and at the terrace. The growth manner of the Imχ⁽²⁾ signal with coverage and the results of an isotopic dilution are consistent with a model in which a one-dimensional (1D) chain at the step forms a "zigzag" structure that contains H-down orientations. This finding resolves the previous controversy in the literature concerning the proton configuration in the 1D water chain at the step.

Photo-curable carboxymethylcellulose composite hydrogel as a promising biomaterial for biomedical applications

A series of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) functionalized with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) was successfully synthesized for producing of CMC-g-GMA copolymer. Water-soluble CMC-g-GMA copolymer was photo-crosslinked while Irgacure-2959 was used as a UV-photo-initiator at 365 nm. On the other hand, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) from sugarcane were graft-copolymerized in an aqueous solution utilizing cerium ammonium nitrate (CAN) as an initiator in a redox-initiated free-radical approach. CNCs were grafted with GMA to enhance their physicochemical and biological characteristics. Factors affecting hydrogel formation, e.g. CMC-g-GMA copolymer concentration, irradiation time and incorporation of different concentration of CNCs-g-GMA nano-filler, were discussed in dependance on the swelling degree and gel fraction of the produced hydrogels. Notably, the addition of CNCs-g-GMA nanofillers increased progressively thermal stability of the prepared hydrogel. CMC-g-GMA filled with CNCs-g-GMA composite hydrogel showed antimicrobial activity against multidrug resistance pathogens. Thus, CMC-g-GMA filled with CNCs-g-GMA composite hydrogel could be endorsed as compatible biomaterials for versatile biomedical applications.

Water's Variable Role in Protein Stability Uncovered by Liquid-Observed Vapor Exchange NMR

Water is essential to protein structure and stability, yet our understanding of how water shapes proteins is far from thorough. Our incomplete knowledge of protein-water interactions is due in part to a long-standing technological inability to assess experimentally how water removal impacts local protein structure. It is now possible to obtain residue-level information on dehydrated protein structures via liquid-observed vapor exchange (LOVE) NMR, a solution NMR technique that quantifies the extent of hydrogen-deuterium exchange between unprotected amide protons of a dehydrated protein and D₂O vapor. Here, we apply LOVE NMR, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and solution hydrogen-deuterium exchange to globular proteins GB1, CI2, and two variants thereof to link mutation-induced changes in the dehydrated protein structure to changes in solution structure and stability. We find that a mutation that destabilizes GB1 in solution does not affect its dehydrated structure, whereas a mutation that stabilizes CI2 in solution makes several regions of the protein more susceptible to dehydration-induced unfolding, suggesting that water is primarily responsible for the destabilization of the GB1 variant but plays a stabilizing role in the CI2 variant. Our results indicate that changes in dehydrated protein structure cannot be predicted from changes in solution stability alone and demonstrate the ability of LOVE NMR to uncover the variable role of water in protein stability. Further application of LOVE NMR to other proteins and their variants will improve the ability to predict and modulate protein structure and stability in both the hydrated and dehydrated states for applications in medicine and biotechnology.

Toward molecular characterization of asphaltene from different origins under different conditions by means of FT-IR spectroscopy

Asphaltene is one of the polar and heavy fractions of crude oil that is complex from a molecular perspective. For this reason, the interaction between asphaltene molecules and the surface, as well as the interaction of asphaltene with chemicals such as amphiphile, are not well identified. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is a useful tool for identifying the functional groups of molecules, as well as intra-molecular and inter-molecular bonds. Through reviewing previous studies, here the peaks in an FTIR spectrum of an asphaltene molecule were divided into polar, aromatic and aliphatic groups and discussed using quantitative indices. Then, the difference in the FTIR spectrum of asphaltene with wax and resin was addressed according to molecular structure. The effect of common impurities such as moisture, CO₂ and saturated and aromatic compounds of crude oil in asphaltene on the FTIR spectrum is assessed. Moreover, the application of the FTIR spectrum of asphaltene is used to determine the API value of crude oil, the asphaltene onset is given. In addition, possible changes in the FTIR spectra of asphaltene are investigated by various processes such as pyrolysis, microwave and ultrasonic radiation. Also, asphaltene subfractions is also one of the best methods to better understand asphaltene components. This study examines the FTIR spectrum of asphaltene subfractions from conventional methods and examines the spectral properties, which in many cases can be useful to researchers working in this field.

Biomolecular and bioanalytical applications of infrared spectroscopy - A review

Infrared (IR; or mid-infrared, MIR; 4000-400 cm^-1; 2500-25,000 nm) spectroscopy has become one of the most powerful and versatile tools at the disposal of modern bioscience. Because of its high molecular specificity, applicability to wide variety of samples, rapid measurement and non-invasivity, IR spectroscopy forms a potent approach to elucidate qualitative and quantitative information from various kinds of biological material. For these reasons, it became an established bioanalytical technique with diverse applications. This work aims to be a comprehensive and critical review of the recent accomplishments in the field of biomolecular and bioanalytical IR spectroscopy. That progress is presented on a wider background, with fundamental characteristics, the basic principles of the technique outlined, and its scientific capability directly compared with other methods being used in similar fields (e.g. near-infrared, Raman, fluorescence). The article aims to present a complete examination of the topic, as it touches the background phenomena, instrumentation, spectra processing and data analytical methods, spectra interpretation and related information. To suit this goal, the article includes a tutorial information essential to obtain a thorough perspective of bio-related applications of the reviewed methodologies. The importance of the fundamental factors to the final performance and applicability of IR spectroscopy in various areas of bioscience is explained. This information is interpreted in critical way, with aim to gain deep understanding why IR spectroscopy finds extraordinarily intensive use in this remarkably diverse and dynamic field of research and utility. The major focus is placed on the diversity of the applications in which IR biospectroscopy has been established so far and those onto which it is expanding nowadays. This includes qualitative and quantitative analytical spectroscopy, spectral imaging, medical diagnosis, monitoring of biophysical processes, and studies of physicochemical properties and dynamics of biomolecules. The application potential of IR spectroscopy in light of the current accomplishments and the future prospects is critically evaluated and its significance in the progress of bioscience is comprehensively presented.

Changes in IR band areas and band shifts during water adsorption to lecithin and ceramide

Adsorption of water to a phospholipid (lecithin) and a ceramide were studied by IR microspectroscopy equipped with a humidity control system and quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). The water weight ratios increase up to 12.2 wt% for lecithin and 1.2 wt% for ceramide at RH ~80%, with linear correlations with infrared OH (+NH) band areas. For lecithin, the 1230 cm^-1 band (PO₂^-) and the 1735 cm^-1 band (CO) shift to lower wavenumbers, while the 1060 cm^-1 band (PO₂^-, POC) shift to higher wavenumber with RH. Band areas of phosphates (1230 and 1060 cm^-1) increase with RH showing positive relations with the band area of bound water. Bound water molecules with shorter H bonds might be bound to these phosphate groups. Band areas of aliphatic CHs are negatively correlated with the increasing adsorption of free water. Free water molecules with longer H bonds might interact loosely with aliphatic chains of lecithin. For ceramide, only the 1045 cm^-1 band (CO) shows a small red shift at higher RHs than 60%, indicating adsorption of bound water to CO bonds. Amounts of water molecules adsorbed to ceramide are very limited due to few adsorption of free water.

Synthesis, spectroscopic (FT–IR and UV–Vis), crystallographic and theoretical studies, and a molecular docking simulation of an imatinib-like template

The aim of the present study was to report the crystal structure and spectroscopic, electronic, supramolecular and electrostatic properties of a new polymorph of 4-(pyridin-2-yl)pyrimidin-2-amine (C9H8N4). The compound was synthesized under microwave irradiation. The single-crystal X-ray structure analysis revealed an angle of 13.36 (8)° between the planes of the rings, as well as molecules linked by Nsp 2—H...N hydrogen bonds forming dimers along the crystal. The material was analyzed by FT–IR vibrational spectroscopy, while a computational approach was used to elucidate the vibrational frequency couplings. The existence of Nsp 2—H...N hydrogen bonds in the crystal was confirmed spectroscopically by the IR peaks from the N—H stretching vibration shifting to lower wavenumbers in the solid state relative to those in the gas phase. The supramolecular studies confirmed the formation of centrosymmetric R 2 2(8) rings, which correspond to the formation of dimers that stack parallel to the b direction. Other weak C—H...π interactions, essential for crystal growth, were found. The UV–Vis spectroscopic analysis showed a donor–acceptor process, where the amino group acts as a donor and the pyridine and pyrimidine rings act as acceptors. The reactive sites of the molecule were identified and their quantitative values were defined using the electrostatic potential model proposed in the multifunctional wave function analyzer multiwfn. The calculated interaction energies between pairs of molecules were used to visualize the electrostatic terms as the leading factors against the dispersion factors in the crystal-growth process. The docking results showed that the amino group of the pyrimidine moiety was simultaneously anchored by hydrogen-bonding interactions with the Asp427 and His407 protein residues. This compound could be key for the realization of a series of syntheses of molecules that could be used as possible inhibitors of chronic myelogenous leukemia.

Hydrated Metal Ion Salts of the Weakly Coordinating Fluoroanions PF6-, TiF62-, B12F122-, Ga(C2F5)4-, B(3,5-C6H3(CF3)2)4-, and Al(OC(CF3)3)4-. In Search of the Weakest HOH···F Hydrogen Bonds

FTIR spectra of microcrystalline samples of 11 metal ion salt hydrates of a variety of weakly coordinating fluoroanions are reported. The compounds studied were Li(H₂O)₄(Al(OC(CF₃)₃)₄), Li(H₂O)(B(3,5-C₆H₃(CF₃)₂)₄), Li(H₂O)_n(Ga(C₂F₅)₄), Li(H₂O)(PF₆), Li₂(H₂O)₂(TiF₆), Li₂(H₂O)₄(B₁₂F₁₂), Na(H₂O)(PF₆), Na₂(H₂O)₂(B₁₂F₁₂), K₂(H₂O)₂(B₁₂F₁₂), Rb₂(H₂O)₂(B₁₂F₁₂), Cs₂(H₂O)(B₁₂F₁₂), and their partially or completely deuterated isotopologs and isotopomers. The O-D···F hydrogen bonds in Li(HOD)(H₂O)₃(Al(OC(CF₃)₃)₄) (ν(OD) = 2706 cm^-1), Li(HOD)(B(3,5-C₆H₃(CF₃)₂)₄) (ν(OD) = 2705 cm^-1), and Li(HOD)(H₂O)_n(Ga(C₂F₅)₄) (ν(OD) = 2697 cm^-1) rival HOD absorbed in polyvinylidene difluoride (ν(OD) = 2696 cm^-1) and HOD···FCH₃ in a frozen Ar matrix (ν(OD) = 2685 cm^-1) for the weakest hydrogen bonds between a water molecule and an F atom in any compound. As weak as they are, minor differences in O-H···F hydrogen bonds in the same fluoroanion salt can be distinguished spectroscopically. Uncoupled HOD molecules in asymmetric F···HOD···F' hydrogen bonding environments in Rb⁺, Cs⁺, Mg²⁺, and Co²⁺ hydrates of B₁₂F₁₂^2- gave rise to two observable ν(OD) bands even though the two R(O···F) distances differ by only 0.010(4) Å (Mg²⁺), 0.033(2) Å (Co²⁺), 0.074(4) Å (Rb⁺), and 0.106(6) Å (Cs⁺). A plot of ν(OD) for hydrates with a single uncoupled HOD molecule per metal ion (e.g., Li(HOD)(H₂O)₃(Al(OC(CF₃)₃)₄)) vs R(O···F) distance from single-crystal X-ray or neutron diffraction structures was prepared. The ν(OD) values range from 2305 to 2706 cm^-1 and the R(O···F) distances range from 2.58 to 3.17 Å. The plot consists of 53 {ν(OD), R(O···F)} data points, 23 of which are new and have ν(OD) > 2600 cm^-1, in contrast to a 1994 ν(OD) vs R(O···F) plot with 28 data points, none of which had ν(OD) > 2600 cm^-1. There is a clear and significant difference between the new ν(OD) vs R(O···F) plot and a literature ν(OD) vs R(O···O) plot for hydrates containing O-D···O hydrogen bonds. For a given ν(OD) stretching frequency, the exponential regression curves show that R(O···F) is typically 0.1-0.2 Å shorter than R(O···O), in harmony with the lower basicity and smaller size of F atoms vs O atoms.

Spectroscopically Resolved Binding Sites for the Adsorption of Sarin Gas in a Metal-Organic Framework: Insights beyond Lewis Acidity

Here we report molecular level details regarding the adsorption of sarin (GB) gas in a prototypical zirconium-based metal-organic framework (MOF, UiO-66). By combining predictive modeling and experimental spectroscopic techniques, we unambiguously identify several unique bindings sites within the MOF, using the P═O stretch frequency of GB as a probe. Remarkable agreement between predicted and experimental IR spectrum is demonstrated. As previously hypothesized, the undercoordinated Lewis acid metal site is the most favorable binding site. Yet multiple sites participate in the adsorption process; specifically, the Zr-chelated hydroxyl groups form hydrogen bonds with the GB molecule, and GB weakly interacts with fully coordinated metals. Importantly, this work highlights that subtle orientational effects of bound GB are observable via shifts in characteristic vibrational modes; this finding has large implications for degradation rates and opens a new route for future materials design.

The interplay and strength of the π⋯HF, C⋯HF, F⋯HF and F⋯HC hydrogen bonds upon the formation of multimolecular complexes based on C2H2⋯HF and C2H4⋯HF small dimers

The conception of this theoretical research was idealized aiming to unveil the intermolecular structures of complexes formed by acetylene or ethylene and hydrofluoric acid. At light of computational calculations by using the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) method, the geometries of the C₂H₂⋯(HF), C₂H₂⋯2(HF), C₂H₂⋯4(HF), C₂H₄⋯(HF), C₂H₄⋯2(HF) and C₂H₄⋯4(HF) hydrogen-bonded complexes were fully optimized. Moreover, the Post-Hartree-Fock calculations MP2/6-311++G(d,p), MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ, MP4(SDQ)/6-311++G(d,p) and CCSD/6-311++G(d,p) also were also used. The infrared spectra were analyzed in order to identify the new vibrational modes and frequencies of the proton donors shifted to red region. Through the modeling of charge-fluxes on the basis of the Quantum Theory of Atoms In Molecules (QTAIM) and, by contradicting the expectation of the hydrofluorination mechanisms of acetylene or ethylene, C⋯HF was recognized as a new type of hydrogen bond instead of the already well known π⋯H. The calculations of the Natural Bonding Orbital (NBO) and Charges derived from the Electrostatic Potential Grid-based (ChElPG) were also applied to interpret the shifting frequencies as well as measuring of the punctual charge-transfer after the formation of the complexes. Finally, the determination of the stabilization energy was carried out through the arguments of the Fock matrix in NBO basis and through the supermolecule approach. Also it is worthwhile to notice that some algebraic formulations were used for determining the electronic cooperative effect (CE).

Distinguishing between bulk and edge hydroxyl vibrational properties of 2 : 1 phyllosilicates via deuteration

Observation of vibrational properties of phyllosilicate edges via a combined molecular modeling and experimental approach was performed. Deuterium exchange was utilized to isolate edge vibrational modes from their internal counterparts. The appearance of a specific peak within the broader D2O band indicates the presence of deuteration on the edge surface, and this peak is confirmed with the simulated spectra. These results are the first to unambiguously identify spectroscopic features of phyllosilicate edge sites.

Solvation and self-aggregation of chiral alcohols: how hydrogen bonding affects their VCD spectral signatures

IR and VCD spectra of chiral alcohols in different solvents are analyzed with DFT spectra calculations. We show that for ACN or DMSO explicit solvation is needed to reproduce experimental spectra.

Simultaneous and Efficient Capture of Inorganic Nitrogen and Heavy Metals by Polyporous Layered Double Hydroxide and Biochar Composite for Agricultural Nonpoint Pollution Control

Agricultural nonpoint pollution has been recognized as the main source of aquatic contaminants worldwide, such as inorganic nitrogen (ION) and heavy metals (HMs). It is an important challenge to simultaneously and efficiently immobilize soil ION and HMs in farmland. Herein, we present a polyporous Mg/Fe-layered double hydroxide and biochar composite (Mg/Fe-LDH@biochar) with the efficient coadsorption capacity of ION and HMs for the mitigation of agricultural nonpoint pollution toward aquatic systems. The Mg/Fe-LDH@biochar showed strong adsorption toward ION (i.e., NH₄⁺-N and NO₃^--N) and HMs (i.e., Cu, Zn, Ni, Pb, and Cd), with maximum capacity of 98.53 mg of NH₄⁺-N/g, 27.09 mg of NO₃^--N/g, 295.80 of mg Cu/g, 141.70 mg of Zn/g, 75.59 mg of Ni/g, 1264.10 mg of Pb/g, and 126.30 mg of Cd/g, respectively. More attractively, by deionized water extraction, the adsorbed ION on the composite was more easily rereleased, with a desorption percentage of about 42.33 ± 6.87% NO₃^--N and 1.42 ± 0.78% NH₄⁺-N, than that of HMs (<1.0%). This difference is primarily related with the strength of bonding forces of ION and HMs when adsorbed on Mg/Fe-LDH@biochar, in the sequence of NO₃^--N (van der Waals force and electrostatic attraction) < NH₄⁺-N (hydrogen bonding) < HMs (ionic/coordinate bonding). Finally, to examine the performance of Mg/Fe-LDH@biochar for practical applications in farmland, column leaching experiments were successfully conducted by stimulated rainfall events. The addition of Mg/Fe-LDH@biochar into soils could greatly reduce the leaching of ION and HMs simultaneously, with reduction ratios of >60, >40, and >90% for NH₄⁺-N, NO₃^--N, and HMs, respectively, at 3.0% addition. Moreover, there was no leaching risk of Fe ions into the water body from Mg/Fe-LDH@biochar-amended soils.

Manifestations of Weak O-H···F Hydrogen Bonding in M(H2O) n(B12F12) Salt Hydrates: Unusually Sharp Fourier Transform Infrared ν(OH) Bands and Latent Porosity (M = Mg-Ba, Co, Ni, Zn)

Eight M(H₂O) _n(Z) salt hydrates were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (Z^2- = B₁₂F₁₂^2-): M = Ca, Sr, n = 7; M = Mg, Co, Ni, Zn, n = 6; M = Ba, n = 4, 5. Weak O-H···F hydrogen bonding between the M(H₂O) _n²⁺ cations and Z^2- resulted in room-temperature Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra having sharp ν(OH) bands, with full widths at half max of 10-30 cm^-1, which are much more narrow than ν(OH) bands in room temperature FTIR spectra of most salt hydrates. Clearly resolved ν_asym(OH/OD) and ν_sym(OH/OD) bands with Δν(OH) as small as 17 cm^-1 and Δν(OD) as small as 11 cm^-1 were observed (Δν(OX) = ν_asym(OX) - ν_sym(OX)). The isomorphic hexahydrates ( R3̅) have two fac-(H₂O)₃ sets of H₂O ligands and nearly octahedral coordination spheres. They exhibited four resolvable ν(OH) bands, one ν_asym(OH)/ν_sym(OH) pair for H₂O ligands with longer O(H)···F distances and one ν_asym(OH)/ν_sym(OH) pair for H₂O ligands with shorter O(H)···F distances. The ν(OH) bands for the three H₂O molecules with shorter, slightly stronger O(H)···F hydrogen bonds were broader, more intense, and red-shifted by ca. 25 cm^-1 relative to the bands for the three other H₂O molecules, the first time that such small differences in relatively weak O(H)···F hydrogen bonds in the same crystalline hexahydrate have resulted in observable IR spectroscopic differences at room temperature. For the first time room temperature ν(OH) values for salt hexahydrates showed the monotonic progression Mg²⁺ > Co²⁺ > Ni²⁺ > Zn²⁺, essentially the same progression as the p K_a values for these metal ions in aqueous solution. A further manifestation of the weak O-H···F hydrogen bonding in these hydrates is the latent porosity exhibited by Ba(H₂O)_5,8(Z), Sr(H₂O) _n,m(Z), and Ca(H₂O)_4,6(Z). Finally, the H₂O/D₂O exchange reaction Co(D₂O)₆(Z) → Co(H₂O)₆(Z) was ca. 50% complete in 1 h at 50 °C in N₂/17 Torr H₂O( g).

Interpreting the Raman OH/OD stretch band of ice from isotopic substitution and phase transition effects

Understanding the OD/OH stretch band (ODSB/OHSB) features for the Raman spectra of ice remains a challenge. This study measures the ODSB/OHSB for isotopically substituted D2O/H2O (with volume ratio VD2O/VH2O of 1/0, 4/1, 1/1, 1/4 and 0/1) ice Ih, and compares them with those for liquid water and ices in various phases. The data show that istopic substitution (IS) narrows the ODSB/OHSB of ice from both the low-frequency and the high-frequency side to the middle of the OD/OH stretch regions, but in contrast, IS enhances the high-frequency part of the ODSB/OHSB for liquid water. The ODSB/OHSB features of ice and their dependences on IS and phase transition can be understood basically from the concept that ice has diverse HB configurations that depend on the ice lattice form and the proton (dis)order and essentially determine the intermolecular vibrational couplings in ice. Combined with a Gaussian fitting analysis, more details for the HB configurations in ice are revealed: tetrahedral HB profiles, which are responsible for the main peak, are dominant and non-tetrahedral ones, which bring about the high-frequency shoulders, are also important. On IS, the proportion of tetrahedral HB profiles sees a dramatic decrease.

An effort to reproduce the physical properties of CO₃²⁻ and CO₃˙⁻ in water proves that one has to include an inner hydration sphere of six water molecules for both anions.

Understanding water structure from Raman spectra of isotopic substitution H2O/D2O up to 573 K

The OH/OD stretch band features on Raman spectra of isotopic substitution H₂O/D₂O at temperatures up to 573 K are correlated with a multi-structure model that water has five dominant hydrogen bonding configurations: tetrahedral, deformed tetrahedral, single donor, single hydrogen bonded water and free water.
