Mechanisms of sequential ion-molecule reactions in protonated methanol using mass spectrometry, ab initio methods, and statistical modeling

Hydrogen bond network structures of protonated dimethylamine clusters H+(DMA)n (n = 3-7)

Infrared spectroscopy of protonated dimethylamine clusters, H+(DMA)n, (n = 3-7), and their Ar-tagged clusters was performed in the NH and CH stretching vibrational region to explore their hydrogen bond network structures. A stable isomer search and vibrational spectral simulations of the clusters were also carried out to support the interpretations of the observed spectra. Weakly hydrogen-bonded NH stretching vibrational bands, which are characteristic of cyclic structures of small-sized protonated clusters, are observed in the spectra of the Ar-tagged clusters of n ≥ 5, while only linear chain type structures are suggested for the Ar-tagged clusters of n = 3-4 and the bare clusters of all the sizes. These results demonstrate that the size and temperature dependence of the hydrogen bond network structures of the protonated dimethylamine clusters is analogous to that of protonated monohydric alcohol clusters.

Water molecule elimination from the protonated methanol dimer ion-An example of a size-selective intracluster reaction

The abundance of extraterrestrial methanol makes the reaction between methanol molecules in a molecular cluster a possible key step in the search for mechanisms for the formation of more complex molecules under the conditions of the interstellar medium as well as circumstellar and planetary atmospheres. The reaction leading to the formation of the dimethyl ether ion from a methanol molecule interacting with a protonated methanol ion via the elimination of a water molecule is a basic mechanism for the formation of complex organic molecules. Here, we experimentally examine such reactions in the gas phase, analyzing the production and reactivity of protonated cluster ions formed by the ionization of a supersonic jet of methanol. Focusing especially on the post-collisional relaxation of the protonated methanol dimer and trimer ions after high-energy single collisions, the results indicate a strong size selectivity favoring the occurrence of this reaction only in the dimer ion. To elucidate this behavior, the velocity distribution of the eliminated water molecule was measured using an event-by-event coincidence analysis. These results are interpreted using quantum chemical calculations of the dissociation pathways. It turns out that in the dimer case, two transition states are able to contribute to this intracluster reaction. In the trimer case, methanol evaporation appears as the most energetically favorable relaxation pathway.

Exploring and modeling the ion mobility spectrometry of perindopril: Example of protonation-dissociation reactions in large molecules

The current research is constructed for considering the chemical ionization and dissociation of perindopril in the positive mode of corona discharge ion mobility spectrometry. Four product ion peaks are observed in the ion mobility spectrum of perindopril erbumine at the cell temperature of 473 K. These peaks are assigned through the obtained intensity variation analysis in the ion mobility spectra over the elapsed time accompanied by the calculations backed by the validated density functional theory (DFT). In this regard, the most stable ionic species associated with each peak and the corresponding reliable generation pathways are found by the well-confirmed meta hybrid density functional method, M06-2X. The peaks are assigned to the protonated perindopril and its dissociation products, including counter ion and the related fragment ions. However, the structures of the neutral perindopril in the gas phase are thoroughly assessed to find a more stable one. The predicted chemical ionization products by the theory are in excellent agreement with our presented experiment here. Theoretical evaluations demonstrated that the production of a fragment by dissociation process occurs when perindopril gets a proton from the ionization region. Also, without protons, there is no dissociation process. Therefore, our mechanism investigated here is the proton transfer one. All possible sites of perindopril are considered theoretically for protonation along with their possible reactions. In addition to the computed PES, the assigned ions for obtained spectra are confirmed by the computed equilibrium constants and rate constants. Our theoretical results show that the peak of the main fragment is for M-CH₃ CH₂ OH produced by a reaction pathway involving no barrier. This study opens new perspectives in interpreting large molecules spectra for future studies.

Photochemistry of Monohydrated Chloromethane: Formation of Free and Hydrated Cl- and CH3+ Ions from a Solvent-Shared Semi-Ion-Pair

The effect of water molecule on the excited states of CH₃Cl(H₂O), as compared to those of the isolated chloromethane, has been studied at the multireference configuration interaction with singles and doubles (MR-CISD), including extensivity corrections. Eight new Rydberg states are due to the water molecule but the common states of both systems are not severely altered. Potential energy curves of 23 singlet states along the C-Cl coordinate have also been computed at the MR-CISD level. The dissociation energy of the C-Cl bond decreases from ∼0.4 to 0.5 eV due to the water molecule. As for CH₃Cl (de Medeiros, V. C., J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2016, 138, 272-280), a stable ion-pair has also been characterized. However, for CH₃Cl(H₂O), this ion-pair is better described as a solvent-shared semi-ion-pair, CH₃^+δ(H₂O)Cl^-δ. This species is connected with three ionic dissociation channels, with two being due to the water molecule. The presence of these new ionic channels, particularly the lowest energy one, [H₃C-O]⁺ + Cl^-, raises a very important question of atmospheric relevance: can the interaction of chloroalkanes with water decrease its deleterious effect on the ozone layer? Several potentially new competing dissociation channels are also studied. The latter results can help to set up the most important states to be included in nonadiabatic dynamic calculations to study how the yields of the ionic channels change due to the water molecule.
