Zn-doped Bi2O2CO3: Synthesis, characterization and photocatalytic properties

Highly efficient recovery of Zn (II) from zinc-containing wastewater by tourmaline tailings geopolymers to in-situ construct nanoscale ZnS for the photodegradation of tetracycline hydrochloride

While treating zinc-containing wastewater, recovering zinc for reuse as a secondary resource has significant environmental and economic benefits. Herein, based on the alkali-activated tourmaline tailings geopolymers (TTG) after adsorption of zinc ions (Zn (II)), a series of new composites with in-situ construction ZnS nanoparticles on TTG (ZnS/TTG) were synthesized, and used as photocatalysts for the photodegradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) in solution. Specifically, ZnS nanoparticles were uniformly and stably distributed in the layered structure of TTG, interweaving with each other to generate an interfacial electric field, which could induce more photocarrier generation. Meanwhile, TTG acted as an electron acceptor to accelerate the electron transfer at the interface, thus enhancing the photodegradation activity for TCH. The active radical quenching experiments combined with the ESR indicated that the active species produced during the photocatalytic degradation of TCH by ZnS/TTG composites were •O2- and photogenerated h+. When the initial concentration of Zn (II) was 60 mg/L, the synthesized 60-ZnS/TTG composites (0.5 g/L) reached 91.53% degradation efficiency of TCH (10 mg/L) at pH = 6. Furthermore, the possible pathways and mechanism of 60-ZnS/TTG composites photodegraded TCH were revealed with the aid of degraded intermediates. This report not only proposed valuable references for reusing heavy metal ions and removing TCH from wastewater, but also provided promising ideas for realizing the conversion of used adsorbents into high-efficiency photocatalysts.

Preparation of O-g-C3N4 nanowires/Bi2O2CO3 porous plate composite photocatalysts for the efficient degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride in wastewater

Both g-C3N4 and Bi2O2CO3 are good photocatalysts for the removal of antibiotic pollutants, but their morphological modulation and catalytic performance need to be further improved. In this study, the calcination-hydrothermal method is used to prepare a O-g-C3N4@Bi2O2CO3 (CN@BCO) composite photocatalyst from dicyandiamide and bismuth nitrate. The prepared catalyst is characterized through various methods, including X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Further, the effects of different parameters, such as catalyst concentration and initial pH of the reaction solution, on its photocatalytic activity are investigated. The results show that the CN@BCO sample achieves an optimal degradation rate of 98.1% for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) with a concentration of 20 mg/L and a removal rate of 69.4% for total organic carbon (TOC) at 40 min. The quenching experiments show that ·O2-, h+, and ·OH participate in the photocatalytic process, with ·O2- being the most dominant active species. The toxicity of the predicted TCH degradation intermediates is analyzed using Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (TEST). Overall, the CN@BCO composite exhibits excellent photocatalytic performance, making it a promising candidate for environmental purification and wastewater treatment.

Zn-Doped MnCO3/CS Composite Photocatalyst for Visible-Light-Driven Decomposition of Organic Pollutants

Zn-doped MnCO3/carbon sphere (Zn-doped MnCO3/CS) composites were synthesized using a simple hydrothermal procedure. Among various samples (ZM-50, ZM-05, and ZMC-0), the ternary Zn-doped MnCO3/CS (ZMC-2) catalyst demonstrated excellent visible light-induced photocatalytic activity. This improvement comes from the Zn addition and the conductive CS, which facilitate electron movement and charge transport. The catalyst exhibited efficient degradation of methylene blue (MB) over a wide pH range, achieving a removal efficiency of 99.6% under visible light. Radical trapping experiments suggested that •OH and •O2- played essential roles in the mechanism of organic pollutant degradation. Moreover, the catalyst maintained good degradation performance after five cycles. This study offers valuable perspectives into the fabrication of carbon-based composites with promising photocatalytic activity.

Plasmonic Ag Nanoparticle-Loaded n-p Bi2O2CO3/α-Bi2O3 Heterojunction Microtubes with Enhanced Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic Activity

In this study, n-p Bi2O2CO3/α-Bi2O3 heterojunction microtubes were prepared via a one-step solvothermal route in an H2O-ethylenediamine mixed solvent for the first time. Then, Ag nanoparticles were loaded onto the microtubes using a photo-deposition process. It was found that a Bi2O2CO3/α-Bi2O3 heterostructure was formed as a result of the in situ carbonatization of α-Bi2O3microtubes on the surface. The photocatalytic activities of α-Bi2O3 microtubes, Bi2O2CO3/α-Bi2O3 microtubes, and Ag nanoparticle-loaded Bi2O2CO3/α-Bi2O3 microtubes were evaluated based on their degradation of methyl orange under visible-light irradiation (λ > 420 nm). The results indicated that Bi2O2CO3/α-Bi2O3 with a Bi2O2CO3 mass fraction of 6.1% exhibited higher photocatalytic activity than α-Bi2O3. Loading the microtubes with Ag nanoparticles significantly improved the photocatalytic activity of Bi2O2CO3/α-Bi2O3. This should be ascribed to the internal static electric field built at the heterojunction interface of Bi2O2CO3 and α-Bi2O3 resulting in superior electron conductivity due to the Ag nanoparticles; additionally, the heterojunction at the interfaces between two semiconductors and Ag nanoparticles and the local electromagnetic field induced by the surface plasmon resonance effect of Ag nanoparticles effectively facilitate the photoinduced charge carrier transfer and separation of α-Bi2O3. Furthermore, loading of Ag nanoparticles leads to the formation of new reactive sites, and a new reactive species ·O2− for photocatalysis, compared with Bi2O2CO3/α-Bi2O3.

Hole Doping to Enhance the Photocatalytic Activity of Bi4NbO8Cl

An increase of carrier concentration is one of the most important routes for enhancing the catalytic performance of semiconductor photocatalysts. In this study, the Sillén–Aurivillius oxychloride Bi4NbO8Cl with hole doping was successfully prepared by a solid-state reaction method. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectra (UV–vis DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) and photoluminescence spectra (PL) were used to characterize and analyze the prepared samples. The experimental results and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that hole doping can be formed in Bi4NbO8Cl by inserting zinc into the niobium site, and the photocatalytic activity can be improved by introducing additional holes into Bi4NbO8Cl. The photogenerated hole (h+) is considered to be the main active species to degrade trypan blue (TB) through trapping experiments. The optimal photocatalyst of Bi4Nb0.8Zn0.2O8Cl exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity in degradation of trypan blue under visible light irritation. Moreover, a possible photocatalytic degradation mechanism is discussed according the experimental and analytical results.
