Integration of Pd nanoparticles with engineered pore walls in MOFs for enhanced catalysis

Hydrophobic Microenvironment Modulation of Ru Nanoparticles in Metal-Organic Frameworks for Enhanced Electrocatalytic N2 Reduction

The modulation of the chemical microenvironment surrounding metal nanoparticles (NPs) is an effective means to enhance the selectivity and activity of catalytic reactions. Herein, a post-synthetic modification strategy is developed to modulate the hydrophobic microenvironment of Ru nanoparticles encapsulated in a metal-organic framework (MOF), MIP-206, namely Ru@MIP-Fx (where x represents perfluoroalkyl chain lengths of 3, 5, 7, 11, and 15), in order to systematically explore the effect of the hydrophobic microenvironment on the electrocatalytic activity. The increase of perfluoroalkyl chain length can gradually enhance the hydrophobicity of the catalyst, which effectively suppresses the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Moreover, the electrocatalytic production rate of ammonia and the corresponding Faraday efficiency display a volcano-like pattern with increasing hydrophobicity, with Ru@MIP-F7 showing the highest activity. Theoretical calculations and experiments jointly show that modification of perfluoroalkyl chains of different lengths on MIP-206 modulates the electronic state of Ru nanoparticles and reduces the rate-determining step for the formation of the key intermediate of N2H2 *, leading to superior electrocatalytic performance.

Metal-Organic Frameworks-Based Frustrated Lewis Pairs for Selective Reduction of Nitroolefins to Nitroalkanes

Nitroalkanes serve as essential intermediates in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and functional materials. To date, nitroalkanes are mainly prepared from homogeneous catalysts such as noble transition metal catalysts with poor recyclability. Herein, we propose a metal-organic framework-frustrated Lewis pair (MOF-FLP) heterogeneous catalyst for selectively reducing nitroolefins to nitroalkanes under moderate reaction conditions. MOF enrichment effect can significantly improve the catalytic efficiency compared to homogeneous FLP catalysts. Benefiting from the strong interaction between FLP and MOF, the MOF-FLP catalyst exhibits outstanding recyclability. This work not only provides a convenient route for nitroalkane synthesis but also showcases the potential of porous heterogeneous FLP catalysts, offering inspiration for future catalytic design strategies.

Molecular Engineering and Morphology Control of Covalent Organic Frameworks for Enhancing Activity of Metal-Enzyme Cascade Catalysis

Metal-enzyme integrated catalysts (MEICs) that combine metal and enzyme offer great potential for sustainable chemoenzymatic cascade catalysis. However, rational design and construction of optimal microenvironments and accessible active sites for metal and enzyme in individual nanostructures are necessary but still challenging. Herein, Pd nanoparticles (NPs) and Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB) are co-immobilized into the pores and surfaces of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with tunable functional groups, affording Pd/COF-X/CALB (X = ONa, OH, OMe) MEICs. This strategy can regulate the microenvironment around Pd NPs and CALB, and their interactions with substrates. As a result, the activity of the COF-based MEICs in catalyzing dynamic kinetic resolution of primary amines is enhanced and followed COF-OMe > COF-OH > COF-ONa. The experimental and simulation results demonstrated that functional groups of COFs modulated the conformation of CALB, the electronic states of Pd NPs, and the affinity of the integrated catalysts to the substrate, which contributed to the improvement of the catalytic activity of MEICs. Further, the MEICs are prepared using COF with hollow structure as support material, which increased accessible active sites and mass transfer efficiency, thus improving catalytic performance. This work provides a blueprint for rational design and preparation of highly active MEICs.

Bioinspired multi-scale interface design for wet gas sensing based on rational water management

Natural organisms have evolved multi-scale wet gas sensing interfaces with optimized mass transport pathways in biological fluid environments, which sheds light on developing artificial counterparts with improved wet gas sensing abilities and practical applications. Herein, we highlighted current advances in wet gas sensing taking advantage of optimized mass transport pathways endowed by multi-scale interface design. Common moisture resistance (e.g., employing moisture resistant sensing materials, post-modifying moisture resistant coatings, physical heating for moisture resistance, and self-removing hydroxyl groups) and moisture absorption (e.g., employing moisture absorption sensing materials and post-modifying moisture absorption coatings) strategies for wet gas sensing were discussed. Then, the design principles of bioinspired multi-scale wet gas sensing interfaces were provided, including macro-level condensation mediation, micro/nano-level transport pathway adjustment and molecular level moisture-proof design. Finally, perspectives on constructing bioinspired multi-scale wet gas sensing interfaces were presented, which will not only deepen our understanding of the underlying principles, but also promote practical applications.

Metalation of metal-organic frameworks: fundamentals and applications

Metalation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been developed as a prominent strategy for materials functionalization for pore chemistry modulation and property optimization. By introducing exotic metal ions/complexes/nanoparticles onto/into the parent framework, many metallized MOFs have exhibited significantly improved performance in a wide range of applications. In this review, we focus on the research progress in the metalation of metal-organic frameworks during the last five years, spanning the design principles, synthetic strategies, and potential applications. Based on the crystal engineering principles, a minor change in the MOF composition through metalation would lead to leveraged variation of properties. This review starts from the general strategies established for the incorporation of metal species within MOFs, followed by the design principles to graft the desired functionality while maintaining the porosity of frameworks. Facile metalation has contributed a great number of bespoke materials with excellent performance, and we summarize their applications in gas adsorption and separation, heterogeneous catalysis, detection and sensing, and energy storage and conversion. The underlying mechanisms are also investigated by state-of-the-art techniques and analyzed for gaining insight into the structure-property relationships, which would in turn facilitate the further development of design principles. Finally, the current challenges and opportunities in MOF metalation have been discussed, and the promising future directions for customizing the next-generation advanced materials have been outlined as well.

Defect-engineering improves the activity of Metal-Organic frameworks for catalyzing hydroboration of Alkynes: A combination of experimental investigation and Density functional theory calculations

Defect-engineered metal-organic frameworks (DEMOFs) are emerging advanced materials. The construction of DEMOFs is of great significance; however, DEMOF-based catalysis remains unexplored. (E)-vinylboronates, an important building block for asymmetric synthesis, can be synthesized via the hydroboration of alkynes. However, the lack of high-performance catalysts considerably hinders their synthesis. Herein, a series of DEHKUST-1 (HKUST = Hong Kong University of Science and Technology) (Da-f) catalysts with missing occupation of linkers at Cu nodes were designed by partially replacing benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (H3BTC) with defective connectors of pyridine-3,5-dicarboxylate (PYDC) to efficiently promote the hydroboration of alkynes. Results showed that the Dd containing 0.8 doping ratio of PYDC exhibited remarkable catalytic activity than the defect-free HKUST-1. This originated from the improved accessibility for reactants towards the Lewis acid active Cu sites of DEHKUST-1 due to the presence of plenty of rooms next to the Cu sites and enhanced coordination ability in such 'defective' HKUST-1. Dd had high selectivity (>99 %) and yield (>96 %) for (E)-vinylboronates and extensive functional group compatibility for terminal alkynes. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to elucidate the mechanism of hydroboration. Compared with that of defect-free HKUST-1, the low energy barrier of DEHKUST-1 can be attributed to the lower coordination number of Cu sites and enhanced accessibility of Cu active sites towards reagents.

Platform for the Immobilizing of Ultrasmall Pd Clusters for Carbonylation: In Situ Self-Templating Fabrication of ZIF-8 on ZnO

Incorporating metal clusters into the confined cavities of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to form MOF-supported catalysts has attracted considerable research interest with regard to carbonylation reactions. Herein, a self-templating method is used to prepare the zinc oxide (ZnO)-supported core-shell catalyst ZnO@Pd/ZIF-8. This facile strategy controls the growth of metal sources on the ZIF-8 shell layer and avoids the metal diffusion or aggregation problems of the conventional synthesis method. The characteristics of the catalysts show that the palladium (Pd) clusters are highly dispersed with an average particle size of ≈1.2 nm, making them excellent candidates as a catalyst for carbonylation under mild conditions. The optimal catalyst (1.25-ZnO@Pd/ZIF-8) exhibits excellent activity in synthesizing α, β-alkynyl ketones under 1 atm of carbon monooxide (CO), and the conversion rate of 1, 3-diphenylprop-2-yn-1-one is 3.09 and 3.87 times more than those of Pd/ZIF-8 and Pd2+, respectively, for the first 2 h. Moreover, the 1.25-ZnO@Pd/ZIF-8 is recyclable, showing negligible metal leaching, and, under the conditions used in this investigation, can be reused at least five times without considerable loss in its catalytic efficiency. This protocol can also be applied with other nucleophile reagents to synthesize esters, amides, and acid products.

Hydrolysis-dominated catalytic system: Hydrogen-free hydrogenolysis of lignin from Pd-MoOx/TiO2

Lignin is continuously investigated by various techniques for valorization due to its high content of oxygen-containing functional groups. Catalytic systems employing hydrolysis‑hydrogenolysis, leveraging the synergistic effect of redox metal sites and acid sites, exhibit efficient degradation of lignin. The predominance of either hydrolysis or hydrogenolysis reactions hinges upon the relative activity of acid and metal sites, as well as the intensity of the reductive atmosphere. In this study, the Pd-MoOx/TiO2 catalyst was found to primarily catalyze hydrolysis in the lignin depolymerization process, attributed to the abundance of moderate acidic sites on Pd and the redox-assisted catalysis of MoOx under inert conditions. After subjecting the reaction to 240 °C for 30 h, a yield of 48.22 wt% of total phenolic monomers, with 5.90 wt% consisting of diphenols, was achieved. Investigation into the conversion of 4-propylguaiacol (4-PG), a major depolymerized monomer of corncob lignin, revealed the production of ketone intermediates, a phenomenon closely linked to the unique properties of MoOx. Dehydrogenation of the propyl is a key step in initiating the reaction, and 4-PG could be almost completely transformed, accompanied by an over 97 % of 4-propylcatechol selectivity. This distinctive system lays a new theoretical groundwork for the eco-friendly valorization of lignin.

Tailoring Charge Flow in Carbon-Defective Cu-MOF with Pd Nanoparticles: A Boost for Visible Light Organic Photoelectrochemical Transistor in Bioanalysis

The photoactive material was of significant importance in organic photoelectrochemical transistor (OPECT) bioanalysis as it influences the photoinduced voltage and the μC* product, resulting in a varying sensor sensitivity. The utilization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as photoactive materials in OPECT analysis is promising, yet it remains a grand challenge due to the inherently narrow light absorption range and high electron-hole recombination rate. Herein, Pd NPs were encapsulated as electron acceptors into the Cu-MOF using a double-solvent method, followed by pyrolysis at the proper temperature. After pyrolysis, Cu-MOF transformed into a carbon defect-rich composite of CuO and Cu2O while retaining its high porosity and structural morphology. The resulting carbon defect-rich pyrolysis Cu-MOF (p-Cu-MOF) served as an active support, facilitating the separation of electrons and holes. The photoelectrons trigger the electron transfer of adjacent active metal components and the formation of a Schottky junction between Pd and the MOFs. This effect induces the electron donation from the MOFs. Moreover, Pd/pyrolysis Cu-MOF exhibits significantly higher visible light absorption, better water stability, and higher electrical conductivity compared to Cu-MOF and Pd/Cu-MOF. An OPECT sensor was fabricated by utilizing Pd/p-Cu-MOF as the photoactive material and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) as the channel material on an integrated laser-etched FTO. The aptamer was used as the recognition element, enabling sensitive and efficient detection of residual isocarbophos.

Interior and Exterior Surface Modification of Zr-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks for Trace Benzene Removal

The emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) significantly contributes to air pollution and poses a serious threat to human health. Benzene, one of the most toxic VOCs, is difficult for the human body to metabolize and is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen. The development of efficient adsorbents for removing trace amounts of benzene from ambient air is thus of great importance. In this work, we studied the benzene adsorption properties of four Zr-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) through static volumetric and dynamic breakthrough experiments. Two previously reported Zr-MOFs, BUT-12 and STA-26, were prepared with a tritopic carboxylic acid ligand (H3L1) functionalized with three methyl groups, and STA-26 is a 2-fold interpenetrated network of BUT-12. Two new isoreticular Zr-MOFs, BUT-12-Et and STA-26-Et, were synthesized using a similar ligand, H3L2, where the methyl groups are replaced with ethyl groups. There are mesopores in BUT-12 and BUT-12-Et and micropores in STA-26 and STA-26-Et. The four Zr-MOFs all showed high stability in liquid water and acidic aqueous solutions. The microporous STA-26 and STA-26-Et showed much higher benzene uptakes than mesoporous BUT-12 and BUT-12-Et at room temperature under low pressures. Particularly, the benzene adsorption capacity of STA-26-Et was high up to 2.21 mmol/g at P/P0 = 0.001 (P0 = 12.78 kPa), higher than those of the other three Zr-MOFs and most reported solid adsorbents. Breakthrough experiments confirmed that STA-26-Et could effectively capture trace benzene (10 ppm) from dry air; however, its benzene capture capacity was reduced by 90% under humid conditions (RH = 50%). Coating of the crystals of STA-26-Et with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) increased the hydrophobicity of the exterior MOF surfaces, leading to a more than 2-fold improvement in its benzene capture capacity in the breakthrough experiment under humid condition. PDMS coating of STA-26-Et likely slowed down the water adsorption process, and thus, the adsorbent afforded more efficient capture of benzene. This work demonstrates that modifying both the interior and exterior surfaces of MOFs can effectively enhance their performance in capturing trace benzene from ambient air, even under humid conditions. This finding is meaningful for the development of new adsorbents for effective air purification applications.

Perfluoroalkyl-Decorated Noble-Metal-Free MOFs for the Highly Efficient One-Pot Four-Component Coupling between Aldehydes, Amines, Alkynes, and Flue Gas CO2

The non-noble-metal catalysed-multicomponent reactions between flue gas CO2 and cheap industrial raw stocks into high value-added fine chemicals is a promising manner for the ideal CO2 utilization route. To achieve this, the key fundamental challenge is the rational development of highly efficient and facile reaction pathway while establishing compatible catalytic system. Herein, through the stepwise solvent-assisted linker installation, post-synthetic fluorination and metalation, we report the construction of a series of perfluoroalkyl-decorated noble-metal-free metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) PCN-(BPY-CuI)-(TPDC-Fx ) [BPY=2,2'-bipyridine-5,5'-dicarboxylate, TPDC-NH2 =2'-amino-[1,1':4',1''-terphenyl]-4,4''-dicarboxylic acid] that can catalyze the one-pot four-component reaction between alkyne, aldehyde, amine and flue gas CO2 for the preparation of 2-oxazolidinones. Such assembly endows the MOFs with superhydrophobic microenvironment, superior water resistance and highly stable catalytic site, leading to 21 times higher turnover numbers than that of homogeneous counterparts. Mechanism investigation implied that the substrates can be efficiently enriched by the MOF wall and then the adsorbed amine species act as an extrinsic binding site towards dilute CO2 through their strong preferential formation to carbamate acid. Moreover, density functional theory calculations suggest the tetrahedral geometry of Cu in MOF offers special resistance towards amine poisoning, thus maintaining its high efficiency during the catalytic process.

Uncoordinated amino groups of MIL-101 anchoring cobalt porphyrins for highly selective CO2 electroreduction

Electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) presents a sustainable route to address energy crisis and environmental issues, where the rational design of catalysts remains crucial. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with high CO2 capture capacities have immense potential as CO2RR electrocatalysts but suffer from poor activity. Herein we report a redox-active cobalt protoporphyrin grafted MIL-101(Cr)-NH2 for CO2 electroreduction. Material characterizations reveal that porphyrin molecules are covalently attached to uncoordinated amino groups of the parent MOF without compromising its well-defined porous structure. Furthermore, in situ spectroscopic techniques suggest inherited CO2 concentrate ability and more abundant adsorbed carbonate species on the modified MOF. As a result, a maximum CO Faradaic efficiency (FECO) up to 97.1% and a turnover frequency of 0.63 s-1 are achieved, together with FECO above 90% within a wide potential window of 300 mV. This work sheds new light on the coupling of MOFs with molecular catalysts to enhance catalytic performances.

Versatile Structural Engineering of Metal-Organic Frameworks Enabling Switchable Catalytic Selectivity

The structure engineering of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) forms the cornerstone of their applications. Nonetheless, realizing the simultaneous versatile structure engineering of MOFs remains a significant challenge. Herein, a dynamically mediated synthesis strategy to simultaneously engineer the crystal structure, defect structure, and nanostructure of MOFs is proposed. These include amorphous Zr-ODB nanoparticles, crystalline Zr-ODB-hz (ODB = 4,4'-oxalyldibenzoate, hz = hydrazine) nanosheets, and defective d-Zr-ODB-hz nanosheets. Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with low-dose high-angle annular dark-field imaging technique vividly portrays these engineered structures. Concurrently, the introduced hydrazine moieties confer self-reduction properties to the respective MOF structures, allowing the in situ installation of catalytic Pd nanoparticles. Remarkably, in the hydrogenation of vanillin-like biomass derivatives, Pd/Zr-ODB-hz yields partially hydrogenated alcohols as the primary products, whereas Pd/d-Zr-ODB-hz exclusively produces fully hydrogenated alkanes. Density functional theory calculations, coupled with experimental evidence, uncover the catalytic selectivity switch triggered by the change in structure type. The proposed strategy of versatile structure engineering of MOFs introduces an innovative pathway for the development of high-performance MOF-based catalysts for various reactions.

Selectivity Control in the Direct CO Esterification over Pd@UiO-66: The Pd Location Matters

The selectivity control of Pd nanoparticles (NPs) in the direct CO esterification with methyl nitrite toward dimethyl oxalate (DMO) or dimethyl carbonate (DMC) remains a grand challenge. Herein, Pd NPs are incorporated into isoreticular metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), namely UiO-66-X (X=-H, -NO2 , -NH2 ), affording Pd@UiO-66-X, which unexpectedly exhibit high selectivity (up to 99 %) to DMC and regulated activity in the direct CO esterification. In sharp contrast, the Pd NPs supported on the MOF, yielding Pd/UiO-66, displays high selectivity (89 %) to DMO as always reported with Pd NPs. Both experimental and DFT calculation results prove that the Pd location relative to UiO-66 gives rise to discriminated microenvironment of different amounts of interface between Zr-oxo clusters and Pd NPs in Pd@UiO-66 and Pd/UiO-66, resulting in their distinctly different selectivity. This is an unprecedented finding on the production of DMC by Pd NPs, which was previously achieved by Pd(II) only, in the direct CO esterification.

Ultrathin covalent organic overlayers on metal nanocrystals for highly selective plasmonic photocatalysis

Metal nanoparticle-organic interfaces are common but remain elusive for controlling reactions due to the complex interactions of randomly formed ligand-layers. This paper presents an approach for enhancing the selectivity of catalytic reactions by constructing a skin-like few-nanometre ultrathin crystalline porous covalent organic overlayer on a plasmonic nanoparticle surface. This organic overlayer features a highly ordered layout of pore openings that facilitates molecule entry without any surface poisoning effects and simultaneously endows favourable electronic effects to control molecular adsorption-desorption. Conformal organic overlayers are synthesised through the plasmonic oxidative activation and intermolecular covalent crosslinking of molecular units. We develop a light-operated multicomponent interfaced plasmonic catalytic platform comprising Pd-modified gold nanoparticles inside hollow silica to achieve the highly efficient and selective semihydrogenation of alkynes. This approach demonstrates a way to control molecular adsorption behaviours on metal surfaces, breaking the linear scaling relationship and simultaneously enhancing activity and selectivity.

Fine-Tuning Electrolyte Concentration and Metal-Organic Framework Surface toward Actuating Fast Zn2+ Dehydration for Aqueous Zn-Ion Batteries

Functional porous coating on zinc electrode is emerging as a powerful ionic sieve to suppress dendrite growth and side reactions, thereby improving highly reversible aqueous zinc ion batteries. However, the ultrafast charge rate is limited by the substantial cation transmission strongly associated with dehydration efficiency. Here, we unveil the entire dynamic process of solvated Zn2+ ions' continuous dehydration from electrolyte across the MOF-electrolyte interface into channels with the aid of molecular simulations, taking zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-7 as proof-of-concept. The moderate concentration of 2 M ZnSO4 electrolyte being advantageous over other concentrations possesses the homogeneous water-mediated ion pairing distribution, resulting in the lowest dehydration energy, which elucidates the molecular mechanism underlying such concentration adopted by numerous experimental studies. Furthermore, we show that modifying linkers on the ZIF-7 surface with hydrophilic groups such as -OH or -NH2 can weaken the solvation shell of Zn2+ ions to lower the dehydration free energy by approximately 1 eV, and may improve the electrical conductivity of MOF. These results shed light on the ions delivery mechanism and pave way to achieve long-term stable zinc anodes at high capacities through atomic-scale modification of functional porous materials.

Superhydrophobic MOFs with enhanced catalytic activity for chemical fixation of CO2

A general approach to prepare superhydrophobic MOFs (denoted as MOFs-CF3) through a post-decorating strategy for highly efficient chemical fixation of CO2 was demonstrated. The enhanced catalytic activity of MOFs-CF3 is attributed to a synergistic effect between the Lewis acid sites of MOFs and modification of the electron-withdrawing trifluoromethyl group, which resulted in a high CO2 enrichment capacity. The possible mechanism of cycloaddition catalyzed by the MOFs-CF3 catalyst was also proposed.

Cooperative Catalytic Alkyne Hydrosilylation by a Porphyrinic Metal-Organic Framework Composite

Vinylsilanes are valuable building blocks and important structural units in organic chemistry. Herein, catalytic alkyne hydrosilylation was reported to be promoted by a porphyrin metal-organic framework with the incorporation of Pd nanoparticles (Pd@Ir-PCN-222). Catalytic results showed that Pd@Ir-PCN-222 displayed high catalytic efficiency, giving rise to the E isomer vinylsilane with an excellent turnover frequency (TOF) of 2564 h-1. The mechanism studies revealed that the enhancement of the catalytic activity originated from the cooperation between iridium porphyrin and the Pd nanoparticle in confined spaces. The iridium porphyrin was prone to absorb and condense the hydrosilane and alkyne in the inner cavities of Ir-PCN-222, not only accelerating the reaction but also promoting the Pd nanoparticle to activate the Si-H and C≡C bonds of hydrosilane and alkyne, respectively.

Turning on Asymmetric Catalysis of Achiral Metal-Organic Frameworks by Imparting Chiral Microenvironment

The development of heterogeneous asymmetric catalysts has attracted increasing interest in synthetic chemistry but mostly relies on the immobilization of homogeneous chiral catalysts. Herein, a series of chiral metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been fabricated by anchoring similar chiral hydroxylated molecules (catalytically inactive) with different lengths onto Zr-oxo clusters in achiral PCN-222(Cu). The resulting chiral MOFs exhibit regulated enantioselectivity up to 83 % ee in the asymmetric ring-opening of cyclohexene oxide. The chiral molecules furnished onto the catalytic Lewis sites in the MOF create multilevel microenvironment, including the hydrogen interaction between the substrate and the chiral -OH group, the steric hindrance endowed by the benzene ring on the chiral molecules, and the proximity between the catalytic sites and chiral molecules confined in the MOF pores, which play crucial roles and synergistically promote chiral catalysis. This work nicely achieves heterogeneous enantioselective catalysis by chiral microenvironment modulation around Lewis acid sites.

Metal-Organic Frameworks/Graphdiyne/Copper Foam Composite Membranes for Catalytic Applications

Graphdiyne (GDY) with a three-dimensional network structure was synthesized on a copper foam (CF) via an in situ Glaser-Hay coupling reaction. A metal-organic framework/GDY composite membrane was designed and synthesized for the first time. CF serves as a template and catalyst for the directed polymerization of GDY membranes. The catalytic activities of HKUST-1/GDY/CF membrane in wet peroxide oxidation of phenol, oxidation of benzyl alcohol, and ring opening of epoxide were studied. The composite membrane has the advantages of appropriateness for continuous operation, simple use process, easy recycling, high catalytic efficiency, etc. It was found that the incorporation of GDY can facilitate electron transfer and effectively improve the catalytic activity of HKUST-1 in membrane catalysis.

Designing a slippery/superaerophobic hierarchical open channel for reliable and versatile underwater gas delivery

Achieving long-term and stable gas manipulation in an aqueous environment is necessary to improve multiphase systems relating to gas/liquid interaction. Inspired by the Pitcher plant and the hummingbird beak, we report a slippery/superaerophobic (SLSO) hierarchical fluid channel for continuous, durable, and flexible gas transport. The immiscible lubricant layer inside the SLSO channel promotes one-year stability of gas transport, and the maximum flux of this open channel can reach 3000 mL h-1. Further integration of a CO2 capturing microchip demonstrates the availability and potential of this gas-manipulating interface, which should provide a valuable platform to develop advanced materials and devices.

Microporous Organic Network: Superhydrophobic Coating to Protect Metal-Organic Frameworks from Hydrolytic Degradation

Despite the rapid development of versatile metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), the synthesis of water-stable MOFs remains challenging, which significantly limits their practical applications. Herein, a novel engineering strategy was developed to prepare superhydrophobic MOFs by an in situ fluorinated microporous organic network (FMON) coating. Through controllable modification, the resulting MOF@FMON retained the porosity and crystallinity of the pristine MOFs. Owing to the superhydrophobicity of the FMON and the feasibility of MOF synthesis, the FMON coating could be in situ integrated with various water-sensitive MOFs to provide superhydrophobicity. The coating thickness and hydrophobicity of the MOF@FMON composites were easily regulated by changing the FMON monomer concentration. The MOF@FMON composites exhibited excellent oil/water separation and catalytic activities and enhanced durability in aqueous solutions. This study provides a general approach for the synthesis of superhydrophobic MOFs, expanding the application scope of MOFs.

Recent strategies for constructing hierarchical multicomponent nanoparticles/metal-organic framework hybrids and their applications

Hybrid nanoparticles with unique tailored morphologies and compositions can be utilized for numerous applications owing to their combination of inherent properties as well as the structural and supportive functions of each component. Controlled encapsulation of nanoparticles within nanospaces (NPNSs) of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) (denoted as NPNS@MOF) can generate a large number of hybrid nanomaterials, facilitating superior activity in targeted applications. In this review, recent strategies for the fabrication of NPNS@MOFs with a hierarchical architecture, tailorability, unique intrinsic properties, and superior catalytic performance are summarized. In addition, the latest and most important examples in this sector are emphasized since they are more conducive to the practical applicability of NPNS@MOF nanohybrids.

Confining Co-Based Nanocatalysts by Ultrathin Nanotubes for Efficient Transfer Hydrogenation of Biomass Derivatives

Catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) based on non-noble-metal catalysts has emerged as an environmentally friendly way for the utilization of biomass resources. However, the development of efficient and stable non-noble-metal catalysts is crucially challenging due to their inherent inactivity. Herein, a metal-organic framework (MOF)-transformed CoAl nanotube catalyst (CoAl NT160-H) with unique confinement effect was developed via a "MOF transformation and reduction" strategy, which exhibited excellent catalytic activity for the CTH reaction of levulinic acid (LA) to γ-valerolactone (GVL) with isopropanol (2-PrOH) as the H donor. Comprehensive characterizations and experimental investigations uncovered that the confined effect of the ultrathin amorphous Al2O3 nanotubes could modulate the electronic structure and enhance the Lewis acidity of Co nanoparticles (NPs), thus contributing to the adsorption and activation of LA and 2-PrOH. The synergy between the electropositive Co NPs and Lewis acid-base sites of the CoAl NT160-H catalyst facilitated the transfer of α-H in 2-PrOH to the C atom of carbonyl in LA during the CTH process via a Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley mechanism. Moreover, the confined Co NPs embedded on am-Al2O3 nanotubes endowed the CoAl NT160-H catalyst with superior stability and the catalytic activity was nearly unchanged for at least ten cycles, far surpassing that of the Co/am-Al2O3 catalyst prepared by the traditional impregnation method.

Programmable kernel structures of atomically precise metal nanoclusters for tailoring catalytic properties

The unclear structures and polydispersity of metal nanoparticles (NPs) seriously hamper the identification of the active sites and the construction of structure-reactivity relationships. Fortunately, ligand-protected metal nanoclusters (NCs) with atomically precise structures and monodispersity have become an ideal candidate for understanding the well-defined correlations between structure and catalytic property at an atomic level. The programmable kernel structures of atomically precise metal NCs provide a fantastic chance to modulate their size, shape, atomic arrangement, and electron state by the precise modulating of the number, type, and location of metal atoms. Thus, the special focus of this review highlights the most recent process in tailoring the catalytic activity and selectivity over metal NCs by precisely controlling their kernel structures. This review is expected to shed light on the in-depth understanding of metal NCs' kernel structures and reactivity relationships.

Bioinspired Framework Catalysts: From Enzyme Immobilization to Biomimetic Catalysis

Enzymatic catalysis has fueled considerable interest from chemists due to its high efficiency and selectivity. However, the structural complexity and vulnerability hamper the application potentials of enzymes. Driven by the practical demand for chemical conversion, there is a long-sought quest for bioinspired catalysts reproducing and even surpassing the functions of natural enzymes. As nanoporous materials with high surface areas and crystallinity, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent an exquisite case of how natural enzymes and their active sites are integrated into porous solids, affording bioinspired heterogeneous catalysts with superior stability and customizable structures. In this review, we comprehensively summarize the advances of bioinspired MOFs for catalysis, discuss the design principle of various MOF-based catalysts, such as MOF-enzyme composites and MOFs embedded with active sites, and explore the utility of these catalysts in different reactions. The advantages of MOFs as enzyme mimetics are also highlighted, including confinement, templating effects, and functionality, in comparison with homogeneous supramolecular catalysts. A perspective is provided to discuss potential solutions addressing current challenges in MOF catalysis.

A Stable Triphenylamine-Based Zn(II)-MOF for Photocatalytic H2 Evolution and Photooxidative Carbon-Carbon Coupling Reaction

Efficient charge transfer has always been a challenge in heterogeneous MOF-based photoredox catalysis due to the poor electrical conductivity of the MOF photocatalyst, the toilless electron-hole recombination, and the uncontrollable host-guest interactions. Herein, a propeller-like tris(3'-carboxybiphenyl)amine (H₃TCBA) ligand was synthesized to fabricate a 3D Zn₃O cluster-based Zn(II)-MOF photocatalyst, Zn₃(TCBA)₂(μ₃-H₂O)H₂O (Zn-TCBA), which was applied to efficient photoreductive H₂ evolution and photooxidative aerobic cross-dehydrogenation coupling reactions of N-aryl-tetrahydroisoquinolines and nitromethane. In Zn-TCBA, the ingenious introduction of the meta-position benzene carboxylates on the triphenylamine motif not only promotes Zn-TCBA to exhibit a broad visible-light absorption with a maximum absorption edge of 480 nm but also causes special phenyl plane twists with dihedral angles of 27.8-45.8° through the coordination to Zn nodes. The semiconductor-like Zn clusters and the twisted TCBA^3- antenna with multidimensional π interaction sites facilitate photoinduced electron transfer to render Zn-TCBA a good photocatalytic H₂ evolution efficiency of 27.104 mmol·g^-1·h^-1 in the presence of [Co(bpy)₃]Cl₂ under visible-light illumination, surpassing many non-noble-metal MOF systems. Moreover, the positive enough excited-state potential of 2.03 V and the semiconductor-like characteristics of Zn-TCBA endow Zn-TCBA with double oxygen activation ability for photocatalytic oxidation of N-aryl-tetrahydroisoquinoline substrates with a yield up to 98.7% over 6 h. The durability of Zn-TCBA and the possible catalytic mechanisms were also investigated by a series of experiments including PXRD, IR, EPR, and fluorescence analyses.

Endowing Porphyrinic Metal-Organic Frameworks with High Stability by a Linker Desymmetrization Strategy

The fabricating of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that integrate high stability and functionality remains a long-term pursuit yet a great challenge. Herein, we develop a linker desymmetrization strategy to construct highly stable porphyrinic MOFs, namely, USTC-9 (USTC represents the University of Science and Technology of China), presenting the same topological structure as the well-known PCN-600 that readily loses crystallinity in air or upon conventional activation. For USTC-9, the involved porphyrinic linker (TmCPP-M) with carboxylate groups located in the meta-position presents a chair-shaped conformation with lower C_2h symmetry than that (D_4h) of the common porphyrinic carboxylate (TCPP) linker in PCN-600. As a result, the wrinkled and interlocked linker arrangements collectively contribute to the remarkable stability of USTC-9. Given the high stability and porosity as well as Lewis acidity, USTC-9(Fe) demonstrates its excellent performance toward catalytic CO₂ cycloaddition with diverse epoxides at moderate temperature and atmospheric pressure.

Electronic State and Microenvironment Modulation of Metal Nanoparticles Stabilized by MOFs for Boosting Electrocatalytic Nitrogen Reduction

Modulation of the local electronic structure and microenvironment of catalytic metal sites plays a critical role in electrocatalysis, yet remains a grand challenge. Herein, PdCu nanoparticles with an electron rich state are encapsulated into a sulfonate functionalized metal-organic framework, UiO-66-SO₃ H (simply as UiO-S), and their microenvironment is further modulated by coating a hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layer, affording PdCu@UiO-S@PDMS. This resultant catalyst presents high activity toward the electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR, Faraday efficiency: 13.16%, yield: 20.24 µg h^-1 mg_cat. ^-1 ), far superior to the corresponding counterparts. Experimental and theoretical results jointly demonstrate that the protonated and hydrophobic microenvironment supplies protons for the NRR yet suppresses the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction reaction, and electron-rich PdCu sites in PdCu@UiO-S@PDMS are favorable to formation of the N₂ H* intermediate and reduce the energy barrier of NRR, thereby accounting for its good performance.

Hollow Carbon Nanopillar Arrays Encapsulated with Pd-Cu Alloy Nanoparticles for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Delicate design and bottom-up synthesis of hollow nanostructures for oxygen evolution electrocatalysts is a promising way to accelerate the reaction kinetics of overall water splitting. Herein, an efficient and versatile strategy for the controllable preparation of Pd-Cu alloy nanoparticles encapsulated in carbon nanopillar arrays (PD-Cu@HPCN) is developed. Core-shell structured MOF@imidazolium-based ionic polymers (ImIPs) have been prepared and adopted as a template, along with the decomposition of the inner Cu-MOFs when an anion exchange occurs between sodium tetrachloropalladate in solution and bromides in the external ImIP shell. Pd nanoparticles will be highly dispersed in the resulting Pd-Cu@HO-ImIP array, and subsequent topotactic transformation generates Pd-Cu@HNPC. No hazardous reagents or tedious steps are used to remove the inner Cu-MOF templates in contrast to the traditional top-down methods. Remarkably, the Pd-Cu@HPCN catalyst possesses outstanding oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity, including small overpotential with 10 mA cm^-2 at an overpotential of 188 mV, a large double layer capacitance (73.8 mF cm^-2), and high stability (20 h). This simple, green, and efficient synthesis methodology represents a new way to design metal alloys for OER electrocatalysts or other electrocatalytic devices.

Effect of Pyrolysis Conditions on the MOFs-Derived Zinc-Based Catalysts in Acetylene Acetoxylation

The preparation method and calcination temperature of metal-organic framework (MOFs)-derived materials are critical factors affecting catalytic performance. In this work, the preparation conditions of MOFS precursors were optimized, and zinc-based catalysts with different activities (MOF5-700, MOF5-750, and MOF5-800) were obtained by pyrolysis of MOFS precursors under nitrogen, which were then applied to an acetylene acetoxylation reaction system. According to the results, the conversion rate of acetic acid under catalysis was significantly different. (MOF5-700 (48%), MOF5-750 (62%), and MOF5-800 (22%)). Comparing the activity of the catalyst with the industrial catalyst Zn(OAc)2/AC (20%), MOF5-750 showed higher activity, and the acetic acid conversion rate remained around 60% after 50 h of stability testing. By characterization analysis, MOFs-derived materials were obtained after proper temperature pyrolysis. They have high mesoporous content, defects, and oxygen-containing functional groups and can maintain a good crystal structure, greatly reducing the loss of active components. This is the main reason for the good performance of the MOF5-750 catalyst in acetylene acetoxylation. Thus, the preparation conditions and favorable pyrolysis temperature of MOF derivative catalysts play a key role in the catalytic performance of acetylene acetoxylation.

Direct generation of polypyrrole-coated palladium nanoparticles inside a metal-organic framework for a semihydrogenation catalyst

Herein, the direct synthesis of polypyrrole (PPy)-coated palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) inside a metal-organic framework (MIL-101) was successfully demonstrated. Owing to the PPy coating of PdNPs, the resulting composites exhibited higher semihydrogenation capability (selectivity: up to 96%) than the analog composite without PPy coating.

Gold Nanoparticles Immobilized in Porous Aromatic Frameworks with Abundant Metal Anchoring Sites as Heterogeneous Nanocatalysts

Porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) with rich metal coordination sites are highly effective support materials for gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), which would not only prevent AuNPs agglomeration but also facilitate mass transfer during the catalytic process. In this work, PAF-160, -161, and -162 bearing diphosphine units are synthesized via the Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction to act as efficient platforms for AuNPs immobilization. These PAFs possess high surface areas (up to 655 m2 g-1) together with excellent stabilities, and the different linkage lengths between P centers allow more scattered and accessible sites for gold coordination. In the resultant Au-PAFs, AuNPs with uniform sizes are stabilized dispersedly. The catalytic performances of these Au-PAFs are monitored by the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), and all materials exhibit excellent catalytic activities on the reduction of 4-NP, especially Au-PAF-162 with the apparent rate constant (kapp) up to 0.019 s-1. Additionally, the reductions of various nitroarenes with different functional groups are explored and all Au-PAFs can convert most nitroaromatic derivatives to the corresponding arylamines with high conversions of 99%, in which the reaction mechanism is also proposed. Furthermore, a continuous catalytic device with Au-PAF-160 catalyst is explored, and Au-PAF-160 can convert 1-chloro-4-nitrobenzene, 2,6-dichoronitrobenzene and 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene into the corresponding amines in sequence in the continuous flow catalytic experiments. This work has enriched the variety of porous materials for noble metal immobilization and promotes their applications in heterogeneous catalysis.

Selective hydrogenation via precise hydrogen bond interactions on catalytic scaffolds

The active site environment in enzymes has been known to affect catalyst performance through weak interactions with a substrate, but precise synthetic control of enzyme inspired heterogeneous catalysts remains challenging. Here, we synthesize hyper-crosslinked porous polymer (HCPs) with solely -OH or -CH₃ groups on the polymer scaffold to tune the environment of active sites. Reaction rate measurements, spectroscopic techniques, along with DFT calculations show that HCP-OH catalysts enhance the hydrogenation rate of H-acceptor substrates containing carbonyl groups whereas hydrophobic HCP- CH₃ ones promote non-H bond substrate activation. The functional groups go beyond enhancing substrate adsorption to partially activate the C = O bond and tune the catalytic sites. They also expose selectivity control in the hydrogenation of multifunctional substrates through preferential substrate functional group adsorption. The proposed synthetic strategy opens a new class of porous polymers for selective catalysis.

Non-covalent interactions (NCIs) in π-conjugated functional materials: advances and perspectives

The design and development of functional materials with real-life applications are highly demanding. Understanding and controlling inter- and intra-molecular interactions provide opportunities to design new materials. A judicious manipulation of the molecular structure significantly alters such interactions and can boost selected properties and functions of the material. There is burgeoning evidence of the beneficial effects of non-covalent interactions (NCIs), showing that manipulating NCIs may generate functional materials with a wide variety of physical properties leading to applications in catalysis, drug delivery, crystal engineering, etc. This prompted us to review the implications of NCIs on the molecular packing, optical properties, and applications of functional π-conjugated materials. To this end, this tutorial review will cover different types of interactions (electrostatic, π-interactions, metallophilic, etc.) and their impact on π-conjugated materials. Attempts have also been made to delineate the effects of weak interactions on opto-electronic (O-E) applications.

Coupled Co-Doped MoS2 and CoS2 as the Dual-Active Site Catalyst for Chemoselective Hydrogenation

Catalytic hydrogenation plays an important role in the industrial production of fine chemicals. Herein, we report a Co-doped MoS₂ and CoS₂ composite with a coupling interface and successfully apply it for the chemoselective hydrogenation of p-chloronitrobenzene to p-chloroaniline. The target catalyst 0.5CoMoS has ∼100% conversion and ∼100% selectivity. Experiments and theoretical calculations reveal that CoS₂ is more favorable for adsorbing and activating H₂ and provides active hydrogen (H_a) to Co-doped MoS₂ by the coupling interface. By matching the production and consumption rates of H_a, the maximization of the reaction yield was achieved. This work may promote the study of MoS₂-based catalysts for chemoselective hydrogenation.

Beyond Pristine Metal-Organic Frameworks: Preparation of Hollow MOFs and Their Composites for Catalysis, Sensing, and Adsorption Removal Applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been broadly applied to numerous domains with a substantial surface area, tunable pore size, and multiple unsaturated metal sites. Recently, hollow MOFs have greatly attracted the scientific community due to their internal cavities and gradient pore structures. Hollow MOFs have a higher tunability, faster mass-transfer rates, and more accessible active sites when compared to traditional, solid MOFs. Hollow MOFs are also considered to be candidates for some functional material carriers. For example, composite materials such as hollow MOFs and metal nanoparticles, metal oxides, and enzymes have been prepared. These composite materials integrate the characteristics of hollow MOFs with functional materials and are broadly used in many aspects. This review describes the preparation strategies of hollow MOFs and their composites as well as their applications in organic catalysis, electrochemical sensing, and adsorption separation. Finally, we hope that this review provides meaningful knowledge about hollow-MOF composites and their derivatives and offers many valuable references to develop hollow-MOF-based applied materials.

Microenvironment engineering of supported metal nanoparticles for chemoselective hydrogenation

Selective hydrogenation with supported metal catalysts widely used in the production of fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals often faces a trade-off between activity and selectivity, mainly due to the inability to adjust one factor of the active sites without affecting other factors. In order to solve this bottleneck problem, the modulation of the microenvironment of active sites has attracted more and more attention, inspired by the collaborative catalytic mode of enzymes. In this perspective, we aim to summarize recent advances in the regulation of the microenvironment surrounding supported metal nanoparticles (NPs) using porous materials enriched with organic functional groups. Insights on how the microenvironment induces the enrichment, oriented adsorption and activation of substrates through non-covalent interaction and thus determines the hydrogenation activity and selectivity will be particularly discussed. Finally, a brief summary will be provided, and challenges together with a perspective in microenvironment engineering will be proposed.

Er3+/Sm3+ co-doped Bi2O2CO3 in photocatalytic water treatment: Immobilization, acute toxicity, sterilization, and catalytic oxidation activity

Defect construction and rare earth doping are the linchpins to completing the target of partial electronic regulation. In Er³⁺/Sm³⁺ co-doping Bi₂O₂CO₃, rare earth doping resulted in the exposure of {001} crystal plane in Bi₂O₂CO₃ and cause surface defects and electron traps, achieving wide light response capability and fast carrier separation. Furthermore, a potential TC degradation route was acknowledged derived from LC-MS. Then, the median lethal concentration LC50 (96 h) is 80 ppm, probing the 2E2SBOC photocatalyst has low toxicity in actual wastewater. Combining with immobilization technology, not only does it have little impact on the organisms in the wastewater, but it is easy to recycle after degradation. In terms of new water disinfection technology, bacterial experiments in natural waters proved that 2E2SBOC has a potential disinfection system, which promotes the exposure of more active sites during degradation. This effective project offers a novel perspective for the development and application of rare-earth-doped photocatalysts.

Inert metal induces the modulation of unsaturated aldehyde absorption mode for enhanced selective hydrogenation

Selective hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes to obtain a high yield of unsaturated alcohols is important in industrial production. This is still a great challenge because it is thermally more favorable for the hydrogenation of CC than for the CO bond. Various strategies have been developed to optimize the catalysts for improving selectivity but are usually accompanied by the sacrifice of catalytic activity. Herein, we adopt the inert metal inducement strategy to synthesize a series of Ir-M alloy nanoparticle catalysts. The optimal catalyst IrCd₅ exhibits impressive catalytic performance in the selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde, achieving 96.7% conversion with 94.3% selectivity for cinnamal alcohol, which is far superior to that of the Ir counterpart. Furthermore, the H₂ temperature-programmed desorption (H₂-TPD) test, styrene-TPD test, surface valence band test and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the adsorption mode of cinnamaldehyde shifted from parallel to vertical configurations after introducing an inert metal. Compared to Ir, the weaker adsorption of alkene and stronger adsorption of the substrate for IrCd₅ lead to the prior adsorption and hydrogenation of the CO bond, thus elevating the selectivity of the cinnamal alcohol. This strategy disperses precious metal nanoparticles effectively, maximizes atomic utilization, and improves the selectivity, which provides a new avenue to design bimetal alloy catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes.

Light-Induced Selective Hydrogenation over PdAg Nanocages in Hollow MOF Microenvironment

Selective hydrogenation with high efficiency under ambient conditions remains a long-standing challenge. Here, a yolk-shell nanostructured catalyst, PdAg@ZIF-8, featuring plasmonic PdAg nanocages encompassed by a metal-organic framework (MOF, namely, ZIF-8) shell, has been rationally fabricated. PdAg@ZIF-8 achieves selective (97.5%) hydrogenation of nitrostyrene to vinylaniline with complete conversion at ambient temperature under visible light irradiation. The photothermal effect of Ag, together with the substrate enrichment effect of the catalyst, improves the Pd activity. The near-field enhancement effect from plasmonic Ag and optimized Pd electronic state by Ag alloying promote selective adsorption of the -NO₂ group and therefore catalytic selectivity. Remarkably, the unique yolk-shell nanostructure not only facilitates access to PdAg cores and protects them from aggregation but also benefits substrate enrichment and preferential -NO₂ adsorption under light irradiation, the latter two of which surpass the core-shell counterpart, giving rise to enhanced activity, selectivity, and recyclability.

Metal-Organic Framework Accelerated One-Step Capture and Reduction of Palladium to Catalytically Active Nanoparticles

Recovery of noble metals and in situ transforming to functional materials hold great promise in the sustainability of natural resources but remain as a challenge. Herein, the variable chemical microenvironments created by the inorganic-organic hybrid composition of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were exploited to tune the metal-support interactions, thus establishing an integrated strategy for recovering and reducing palladium (Pd). Assisted by sonic waves and alcoholic solvent, selective capture of Pd(II) from a complicated matrix to directly afford Pd nanoparticles (NPs) in MOFs can be achieved in one step within several minutes. Mechanism investigation reveals that the Pd binding site and the energy barriers between ionic and metallic status are sensitive to chemical environments in different frameworks. Thanks to the clean, dispersive, and uniform nature of Pd NPs, Pd@MOFs synthesized from a complicated environment exhibited high catalytic activity toward 4-nitrophenol reduction and Suzuki coupling reactions.
