Study of phenol removal using fluidized-bed Fenton process

Industrial wastewater treatment using a bubble photo-Fenton reactor with continuous gas supply

The present study assesses the treatability of a real industrial wastewater (WW) with a high organic load (chemical oxygen demand (COD) above 5800 mgO₂ L^-1) by photo-Fenton's oxidation with the goal of improving the organic matter degradation reached previously, in another work, where the Fenton process was applied in a bubbling reactor. Thus, the process was carried out in a bubble photo reactor (BPR) wherein continuous air supply ensures an efficient mixing of the liquid phase. The effect of the main operatory parameters that influence the WW treatment (i.e., H₂O₂ and Fe²⁺ concentrations, initial pH, and UV-Vis radiation intensity) were evaluated, being found that in the best conditions tested (pH₀ = 4.6, [Fe²⁺] = 0.1 g L^-1, [H₂O₂] = 18 g L^-1, Q_air = 1.0 L min^-1-measured at room temperature and atmospheric pressure-and irradiance of 500 W m^-2), removals of 95% and 97% for total organic carbon (TOC) and COD, respectively, were achieved. Still, a high reduction of the concentration of the main constituents of this WW was reached, being total for aniline and 86% for sulfanilic acid. The continuous air supply reactor configuration was compared with magnetic stirring; similar mineralization was achieved. However, the air bubbling promotes a good heat transfer within the reactor, minimizing temperature gradients, which is quite advantageous due to the strong exothermicity of the oxidation process during the treatment of such highly loaded real effluents.

Pd based in situ AOPs with heterogeneous catalyst of FeMgAl layered double hydrotalcite for the degradation of bisphenol A and landfill leachate through multiple pathways

In situ degradation of organic contaminants by Pd and electro-generated H₂ and O₂ overcomes the drawbacks to traditional Fenton process, and conducting heterogeneous catalyst of FeMgAl layered double hydrotalcite (LDH) further improved the efficiency and stability. Using bisphenol A (BPA) as the model contaminants, 90% removal can be achieved with 1200 mg/L Pd/Al₂O₃ and FeMgAl-2. The reusability was satisfying due to the very limited leaching of Fe ions at 0.1 ppm level. FeMgAl also amplified the window of pH for Pd-catalyzed in situ advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) from 3 by homogenous Fe(II) to 3-7 by FeMgAl LDH. The COD of landfill leachate effluent of the MBR system removed by about 52.3% by this system by the initial pH was 5. Characterizations revealed the distinguishing features associated with LDH structure such as large surface area, good stability, basic character, and strong linage among active sites were accounted for the remarkable performances over a wide pH window. Five reactive intermediates were observed and multiple degradation pathways were proposed in Pd-catalyzed in situ AOP for the first time. Interestingly, because of the unique role of Pd catalyst, these degradation pathways were clearly distinguished from traditional Fenton or Fenton-like AOPs and may provide a new approach of in situ heterogeneous AOPs for refractory contaminants in future.

Electrochemical Preparation of Polyaniline Nanowires with the Used Electrolyte Solution Treated with the Extraction Process and Their Electrochemical Performance

Electrochemical polymerization of aniline is one of the most promising methods to prepare polyaniline (PANI) materials. However, during this process, the electrolyte solution must be replaced after electropolymerization of a certain time because of the generation and the accumulation of the by-products, which have significant effects on the morphology, purity and properties of PANI products. Treatment and recycling of the used electrolyte solution are worthwhile to study to reduce the high treatment cost of the used electrolyte solution containing aniline and its polymerization by-products. Here, the composition of the used electrolyte solution was separated and determined by high performance liquid chromatography coupled with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD) in the range of ultraviolet and visible (UV-Vis) light. The analysis results revealed that the used electrolyte solution consisted of aniline, p-hydroquinone (HQ), p-benzoquinone (BQ), co-oligomers of aniline and p-benzoquinone (CAB) and acid. Then, n-octanol and 2-octanone were selected as extracts to remove HQ, BQ and CAB from the used electrolyte solution. Following that, the recycled electrolyte solution was prepared by adjusting the concentration of aniline and acid of the aqueous phase, and the electrochemical polymerization process was conducted. Finally, the obtained PANI was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electrochemical methods. The experimental results clearly demonstrate that the morphology and specific capacitance of PANI produced from the recycled electrolyte solution can be recovered completely. This research paves the way for reusing the used electrolyte solution for aniline electrochemical polymerization.
