Filtration and adsorption of tetracycline in aqueous solution by copper alginate-carbon nanotubes membrane which has the muscle-skeleton structure

Polydopamine coating for enhanced electrostatic adsorption of methylene blue by multiwalled carbon nanotubes in alkaline environments

The removal of dye molecules in alkaline environments is an issue that should receive increased attention. In this study, the interaction mechanism between polydopamine-modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes (P-MWCNTs) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with the cationic dye methylene blue (MB) in alkaline environments was explained in depth by adsorption, spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT). The mechanism of action and dominant forces between the adsorbent and adsorbate were analyzed graphically by introducing energy decomposition analysis (EDA) and an independent gradient model (IGM) into the DFT calculations. In addition, the force distribution was investigated through an isosurface. Moreover, batch adsorption studies were conducted to evaluate the performance of MWCNTs and P-MWCNTs for MB removal in alkaline environments. The maximum MB adsorption capacities of the MWCNTs and P-MWCNTs in solution were 113.3 mg‧g-1 and 230.4 mg‧g-1, respectively, at pH 9. The IGM and EDA showed that the better adsorption capacity of the P-MWCNTs originated from the enhancement of the electrostatic effect by the proton dissociation of polydopamine. Moreover, the adsorption of MB by MWCNTs and P-MWCNTs in alkaline environments was governed by dispersion and electrostatic effects, respectively. Through this study, it is hoped that progress will be made in the use of DFT to explore the mechanism of adsorbent-adsorbate interactions.

Carbon nanotubes buckypapers: A new frontier in wastewater treatment technology

Occurrence of contaminants in water is one of the major global concerns humanity is still facing today: most of them are extremely toxic and dangerous for human health, obliging their removal for a proper and correct process of sanitation. Among wastewater treatment technologies, in the view of development of sustainable and environmentally friendly processes, membrane adsorption has proved to be a fast and simple method in the removal of pollutants, offering great contaminants recovery percentages, fast adsorbent regeneration and recycle, and easy scale-up. Due to their large surface area and tunable chemistry, carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-based materials revealed to be extraordinary adsorbents, exceeding by far performances of ordinary organic and inorganic membranes such as polyethersulfone, polyvinylidene fluoride, polytetrafluoroethylene, ceramics, currently employed in membrane technologies for wastewater treatment. In consideration of this, the review aims to summarize recent developments in the field of carbon nanotubes-based materials for pollutants recovery from water through adsorption processes. After a brief introduction concerning what adsorption phenomenon is and how it is performed and governed by using carbon nanotubes-based materials, the review discusses into detail the employment of three common typologies of CNTs-based materials (CNTs powders, CNTs-doped polymeric membranes and CNTs membranes) in adsorption process for the removal of water pollutants. Particularly focus will be devoted on the emergent category of self-standing CNTs membranes (buckypapers), made entirely of carbon nanotubes, exhibiting superior performances than CNTs and CNTs-doped polymeric membranes in terms of preparation strategy, recovery percentages of pollutants and regeneration possibilities. The extremely encouraging results presented in this review aim to support and pave the way to the introduction of alternative and more efficient pathways in wastewater treatment technologies to contrast the problem of water pollution.

Photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride by lanthanum doped TiO2@g-C3N4 activated persulfate under visible light irradiation

In this work, a visible light-driven La/TiO₂@g-C₃N₄ photocatalyst was synthesized for the photodegradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) in the presence of peroxydisulfate (PDS) in an internal loop-lift reactor. The surface morphology and structure of La/TiO₂@g-C₃N₄ have been characterized by XRD, SEM-EDS, FTIR, XPS, and UV/vis DRS. La/TiO₂@g-C₃N₄ displays outstanding photocatalytic performance and reusability. After four reuse cycles of the vis/La/TiO₂@g-C₃N₄/PDS system, the TCH degradation rate and efficiency still reached 0.083 min^-1 and 97.68%, respectively. Reactive species in this system included free radicals SO₄˙^-, ˙OH, and ˙O₂ ^-, as well as non-radicals e^-, and h⁺, as established from the results of chemical quenching experiments. Moreover, a mechanism of action of the vis/La/TiO₂@g-C₃N₄/PDS system for TCH degradation was proposed. The acute toxicity of the reaction solution towards Photobacterium phosphoreum T3 spp. in the vis/La/TiO₂@g-C₃N₄/PDS process increased during the first 60 min and then decreased, illustrating that vis/La/TiO₂@g-C₃N₄/PDS provided an effective and safe method for the removal of TCH.

Recent Advances in the Synthesis, Characterization, and Application of Carbon Nanomaterials for the Removal of Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals: A Review

The large-scale production and frequent use of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have led to the continuous release and wide distribution of these pollutions in the natural environment. At low levels, EDC exposure may cause metabolic disorders, sexual development, and reproductive disorders in aquatic animals and humans. Adsorption treatment, particularly using nanocomposites, may represent a promising and sustainable method for EDC removal from wastewater. EDCs could be effectively removed from wastewater using various carbon-based nanomaterials, such as carbon nanofiber, carbon nanotubes, graphene, magnetic carbon nanomaterials, carbon membranes, carbon dots, carbon sponges, etc. Important applications of carbon nanocomposites for the removal of different kinds of EDCs and the theory of adsorption are discussed, as well as recent advances in carbon nanocomposite synthesis technology and characterization technology. Furthermore, the factors affecting the use of carbon nanocomposites and comparisons with other adsorbents for EDC removal are reviewed. This review is significant because it helps to promote the development of nanocomposites for the decontamination of wastewater.

Adsorption of Methylene Blue from Aqueous Solution Using Gelatin-Based Carboxylic Acid-Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes@Metal–Organic Framework Composite Beads

Abstract

A novel gelatin-based functionalized carbon nanotubes@metal–organic framework (F-CNTs@MOF@Gel) adsorbent was prepared by the green and simple method for the adsorption of methylene blue (MB). Cu-BTC (also known as HKUST-1) was selected as the MOF type. F-CNTs@Cu-BTC particles were fixed by gelatin, thus avoiding the secondary pollution of carbon nanomaterial particles to the environment. CNTs were used as the connecting skeleton to make more effective adsorption sites exposed on the surface of the internal pore structure of the adsorbent. In this paper, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry (TGA) and BET analysis methods were used to characterize the new adsorbent. The effects of time, temperature, pH, dosage and initial concentration on the adsorption process were investigated by batch adsorption experiments. The adsorption mechanism was further analyzed by several commonly used kinetic and isotherm models, and the reliability of several fitting models was evaluated by the Akaike information criterion (AIC), Bayesian information criterion (BIC) and Hannan information criterion (HIC). After five regeneration experiments, the adsorbent still had 61.23% adsorption capacity. In general, the new adsorbent studied in this paper has an optimistic application prospect.
