Abstract
β-blockers are widely used chiral pharmaceuticals to treat hypertension and cardiovascular diseases, which are ubiquitously detected in the water-soil environment. However, little is known about their biogeochemical behaviors and enantiomer selectivity during soil migration and transformation. In this study, the adsorption and leaching behaviors of β-blockers in fluvo-aquic soil and black soil were investigated. The adsorption of β-blockers was fit well by the Freundlich adsorption isotherm (R2 > 0.913) and the adsorption affinity of β-blockers decreased in the following order: propranolol (logarithm of Freundlich adsorption coefficient log Kf = 1.46-2.55) > atenolol (log Kf = 0.53-1.04) > sotalol (log Kf = 0.32-1.01). An increase in ionic strength and dissolved organic matter (DOM) inhibited their soil adsorption. Ionic change is the main driving force for adsorption. Besides, hydrophobic partitioning and hydrogen bonding played key roles in the adsorption of propranolol and atenolol, respectively. The leaching behaviors of β-blockers are related to their hydrophobicity. An increase in ionic strength enhanced the migration of β-blockers to deeper soil layers, and the presence of DOM accelerated the migration of sotalol and propranolol. The migration potential of β-blockers in black soil is lower than that in fluvo-aquic soil, which could be ascribed to the higher organic matter content and strong ion exchange ability of black soil. Further, more significant enantiomer selectivity of β-blockers was found in black soil (e.g. enantiomer fraction of atenolol = 0.61) than in fluvo-aquic soil (e.g. enantiomer fraction of atenolol = 0.53) during the leaching process. The microbial activity might influence the enantiomer selectivity of studied β-blockers during soil leaching.

Abstract
This paper presents a multi-residue method for direct enantioselective separation of chiral pharmacologically active compounds in environmental matrices. The method is based on chiral liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry detection. Simultaneous chiral discrimination was achieved with a macrocyclic glycopeptide-based column with antibiotic teicoplanin as a chiral selector working under reverse phase mode. For the first time, enantioresolution was reported for metabolites of ibuprofen: carboxyibuprofen and 2-hydroxyibuprofen with this chiral stationary phase. Moreover, enantiomers of chloramphenicol, ibuprofen, ifosfamide, indoprofen, ketoprofen, naproxen and praziquantel were also resolved. The overall performance of the method was satisfactory in terms of linearity, precision, accuracy and limits of detection. The method was successfully applied for monitoring of pharmacologically active compounds at enantiomeric level in influent and effluent wastewater and in river water. In addition, the chiral recognition and analytical performance of the teicoplanin-based column was critically compared with that of the α1 -acid glycoprotein chiral stationary phase. Abstract
A simple, inexpensive, and efficient preconcentration and cleanup three-phase hollow fiber liquid-phase microextraction method (HF-LPME) was developed for the extraction of the anti-inflammatory ketoprofen (KTP) from human and rat plasma and HPLC enantioseparation of its enantiomers using vancomycin as a chiral mobile-phase additive with an achiral C8 column. The effects of different parameters influencing the efficiency of extraction were optimized for aqueous samples. Under optimized conditions, KTP enantiomers were extracted from 0.5 mL of plasma diluted to 5 mL with salinated and acidified deionized water (pH = 2) with 25 μL of alkalinized acceptor phase (pH = 11) during 30 min at room temperature. The mean recoveries of (−)-(R)- and (+)-(S)-KTP were 72.8% and 70.9%, respectively. The quantification limit was 20 ng/mL with linear response over the 20–2000 ng/mL concentration range for both enantiomers. Assay precision was studied within-day and between-day using 100 ng/mL KTP solutions. For both KTP enantiomers, relative standard deviations were lower than 12%. The proposed microextraction method was applied for the extraction of KTP enantiomers from human and rat plasma samples after oral administration of pure (±)-KTP in 4 mg/kg dosage for rats and 50 mg dosage for humans to assess the enantiospecific bioavailability of KTP enantiomers in their plasma. In vivo inversion studies revealed that the bioavailability of S-KTP is higher than that of the R enantiomers in rat, but they are similar in human plasma. The developed method showed that HF-LPME is a promising technique for sample preparation for the analyses of chiral drugs in biological samples.

Abstract
A validated simple, rapid, sensitive and specific square-wave voltammetric technique is described for the determination of acebutolol (AC) following its accumulation onto a hanging mercury drop electrode in a Britton-Robinson universal buffer of pH 7.5. The optimal procedural conditions were: accumulation potential Eacc = - 0.8 V versus Ag/AgCl/KCl, accumulation duration tacc = 30 s, pulse-amplitude = 70 mV, scan rate = 100 mV/s, frequency = 30 Hz, surface area of the working electrode = 0.6 mm2 and the convection rate = 2000 rpm. Under these optimized conditions, the adsorptive stripping voltammetry (AdSV) peak current was proportional over the concentration range 5 × 10-7 - 6 × 10-6 M (r = 0.999). Recoveries for acebutolol from human plasma and urine were in the range 97-103% and 96-104% respectively. The method proved to be precise (intra-day precision expressed as %RSD in human plasma ranged from 2.9 - 3.2% and inter-day precision expressed as %RSD ranged from 3.4 - 3.8%) and accurate (intra-day accuracies expressed as % error in human urine ranged from -3.3 - 2.8% and inter-day accuracies ranged from -3.3 - 1.7%). The limit of quantitation (LOQ) and limit of detection (LOD) for acebutolol were 1.7 × 10-7 and 5 × 10-7 M, respectively. Possible interferences by substances usually present in the pharmaceutical formulations were investigated with a mean recovery of 101.6 ± 0.64%. Results of the developed square-wave adsorptive stripping voltammetry (SW-AdSV) method were comparable with those obtained by reference analytical method.

Abstract
Perphenylcarbamoylated β-cyclodextrin-silica (Ph-β-CD-silica) hybrid monolithic columns for enantioseparation in capillary liquid chromatography (cLC) have been prepared by a "one-pot" approach via the polycondensation of alkoxysilanes and in situ copolymerization of mono (6(A)-N-allylamino-6(A)-deoxy)-Ph-β-CD and vinyl group on the precondensed siloxanes. The morphologies of the Ph-β-CD-silica hybrid monolithic columns were characterized by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), showing the uniform monolithic matrixes tightly bonded onto the capillary wall. The content of Ph-β-CD incorporated in monolithic matrix by the "one-pot" approach was ca. 2.9 times higher than that by postmodification method. The permeability of the Ph-β-CD-silica chiral hybrid monolithic column was 3.63 × 10(-14) m(2), and the minimum plate height was 12 μm corresponding to 83,300 theoretical plates/meter. Enantioseparations of 13 racemates were achieved by the Ph-β-CD-silica hybrid monolithic column. In this work, since the prepolymerization system mainly consisted of organic solvent (methanol (MeOH), N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF)), the limitation and difficulty of the use of water insoluble organic monomers in the previously reported "one-pot" method was circumvented. Therefore, various β-CD derivatives as well as other hydrophobic monomers could thus be used to prepare organic-silica hybrid monolithic columns with the "one-pot" process.

Abstract
The enantio-separations of eight 2-arylpropionic acid nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (2-APA NSAIDs) were established using reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP-beta-CD) as chiral mobile phase additive for studying the stereoselective skin permeation of suprofen, ketoprofen, naproxen, indoprofen, fenoprofen, furbiprofen, ibuprofen and carprofen. The effects of the mobile phase composition, concentration of HP-beta-CD and column temperature on retention and enantioselective separation were investigated. With 2-APA NSAIDs as acidic analytes, the retention times and resolutions of the enantiomers were strongly related to the pH of the mobile phase. In addition, both the concentration of HP-beta-CD and temperature had a great effect on retention time, but only a slight or almost no effect on resolutions of the analytes. Enantioseparations were achieved on a Shimpack CLC-ODS (150 x 4.6 mm i.d., 5 microm) column. The mobile phase was a mixture of methanol and phosphate buffer (pH 4.0-5.5, 20 mM) containing 25 mM HP-beta-CD. This method was flexible, simple and economically advantageous over the use of chiral stationary phase, and was successfully applied to the enantioselective determination of the racemic 2-APA NSAIDs in an enantioselective skin permeation study.

Abstract
The evaluation of a macrocyclic glycopeptide antibiotic, eremomycin, as a chiral selector in capillary electrophoresis (CE) has been performed. The stability of eremomycin in solution and capillary electrolyte, as well as its optical and electrophoretic properties have been discussed. The effect of experimental parameters influencing the enantioseparation of several profens has been studied. Excellent enantioseparation of profens has been achieved and migration order has been validated. Comparison of enantioseparations of profens in CE by using eremomycin-mediated electrolytes and in HPLC with eremomycin immobilized on silica has revealed similar trends for both methods.

Abstract
A high performance liquid chromatographic method using macrocyclic glycopeptide chiral stationary phases (CSPs) was used to separate enantiomers of seven ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes. Among the five different CSPs, the Chirobiotic T2 was most effective and baseline separated all complexes. All complexes show the same elution order with the Δ-enantiomer being retained longer than the Λ-enantiomer. The mobile phase composition, including organic modifier type, organic modifier percent, salt type, and salt concentration, produced significant effects on the enantioresolution.

Abstract
The development of methods for the separation of enantiomers has attracted great interest in the past 20 years, since it became evident that the potential biological or pharmacological applications are mostly restricted to one of the enantiomers. In the past decade, macrocyclic antibiotics have proved to be an exceptionally useful class of chiral selectors for the separation of enantiomers of biological and pharmacological importance by means of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), thin-layer chromatography and electrophoresis. The glycopeptides avoparcin, teicoplanin, ristocetin A and vancomycin have been extensively used as chiral selectors in the form of chiral bonded phases in HPLC, and HPLC stationary phases based on these glycopeptides have been commercialized. In fact, the macrocyclic glycopeptides are to some extent complementary to one another: where partial enantioresolution is obtained with one glycopeptide, there is a high probability that baseline or better separation can be obtained with another. This review sets out to characterize the physicochemical properties of these macrocyclic glycopeptide antibiotics and, through their application, endeavors to demonstrate the mechanism of separation on macrocyclic glycopeptides. The sequence of elution of the stereoisomers and the relation to the absolute configuration are also discussed.

Abstract
A reversed-phase enantioselective liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS-MS) method was developed to measure enantiomer fractions (EF) and concentrations of pharmaceuticals in wastewater. Enantiomer resolution of six beta-blockers (atenolol, metoprolol, nadolol, pindolol, propranolol, and sotalol) along with two selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (citalopram, fluoxetine) and one beta(2)-agonist (salbutamol) was achieved with the Chirobiotic V stationary phase. Analyte recovery averaged 86% in influent and 78% in effluent with limits of detection ranging from 0.2 to 7.5 ng/L. These results represent an improvement in wastewater EF measurement for atenolol, metoprolol and propranolol as well as the first EF measurements of citalopram, fluoxetine, nadolol, pindolol, salbutamol and sotalol in wastewaters. Changes in EF through treatment indicate biologically mediated stereoselective processes were likely occurring during wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Nano-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (nano-LC-MS) was evaluated for the separation of basic compounds of pharmaceutical interest. The separation of selected beta-blockers, namely nadolol, oxprenolol, alprenolol and propranolol in the presence of terbutaline was performed using two 75 microm I.D. capillaries packed with two different RP18 stationary phases (SP). The best results concerning resolution and efficiency were achieved using the SP where free silanol groups were not present. As expected, this latter SP proved to be very efficient and symmetry factors were observed mainly in the case of the more retained analytes. Baseline resolution of all studied basic compounds was achieved with the Cogent bidentate C18 silica phase (CBC18) eluting analytes at 800 nL/min with a mobile phase containing 500 mM ammonium acetate pH 4.5-water-methanol (1:8:91, v/v/v). The separated basic compounds were revealed using on-column UV detector at 205 nm and electrospray-ion-trap mass spectrometer (ESI-MS). The packed capillary was connected to the MS through a commercial sheath liquid interface or a sheathless nano-spray interface and in both cases the sensitivity was studied and the results compared. Limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.1 ng/mL was measured for nadolol using the sheathless nano-spray interface and the capillary column packed with the CBC18 stationary phase.

Abstract
The chiral selector vancomycin was used either as mobile phase additive or bound as a chiral stationary phase (CSP) for the stereoselective separation of seven racemic nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), fenoprofen, carprofen, flurbiprofen, indoprofen, flobufen, ketoprofen, and suprofen, by capillary liquid chromatography. The effect of the type of stationary phase, the chiral column Chirobiotic V or the achiral stationary phases Nucleosil 100 C8 HD and Nucleosil 100 C18 HD, and the concentration of vancomycin in the mobile phase on separation of the drug enantiomers were evaluated. All the drugs, except flobufen, were successfully enantioseparated on Nucleosil 100 C8 HD with 4 mM vancomycin present in the mobile phase (composed of methanol and buffer) in the reversed phase mode. On the vancomycin-bonded chiral stationary phase, it was difficult to get enantioseparations of the profen NSAIDs. However, flobufen gave better enantioseparation on the vancomycin CSP. The better enantioresolution of the majority of profen derivatives on the achiral columns with vancomycin added to the mobile phase can be attributed in particular to the higher separation efficiency of this capillary chromatographic system. In addition, vancomycin dimers, formed in the mobile phase, seem to offer a better steric arrangement for stereoselective interaction to these analytes than the vancomycin bonded on the CSP. These substantial differences in the CS structure significantly influence the chiral discrimination mechanism.
