In situ growth of copper-based metal-organic framework on a helical shape copper wire as a sorbent in stir-bar sorptive extraction of fenthion followed by corona discharge ion mobility spectrometry. J Chromatogr A 2021; 1651:462279. Abstract
In this paper, a helical copper wire, coated with copper-benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid metal-organic framework (Cu-BDC) was used as a sorbent for stir-bar sorptive extraction of fenthion from water and fruit samples. The homogenous coating was fabricated through two simple and fast steps. The chemical conversion of copper substrate to copper hydroxide nanotubes (Cu(OH)2 NTs) was performed in an alkaline solution and then Cu-BDC was formed through a neutralization reaction. Corona discharge ion mobility spectrometry in positive mode was applied for the detection of fenthion. To improve the sensitivity of the method, some synthesis and extraction parameters affecting the extraction efficiency such as benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid concentration, ionic strength, sample pH, stirring rate, extraction temperature, and extraction time were investigated. The linear dynamic range between 0.5 and 80 μg L-1 and detection limit of 0.1 μg L-1 were obtained under optimal conditions. The intra- and inter-day relative standard deviations were less than 6.4 and 8.6%, respectively. The applicability of the method was examined for the analysis of different samples (i.e., well water, agricultural wastewater, and orange). The recovery for the determination of fenthion in spiked samples varied from 88 to 111%.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Excessive or improper use of organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) may adversely affect human health through the food chain. In the present study, a simple, rapid and effective analytical method was successfully established and used for the determination of OPPs quinalphos and its analogs in different food samples. RESULTS Under the optimized experimental conditions, five OPPs (quinalphos, triazophos, parathion, fenthion and chlorpyrifos-methyl) exhibit a good linearity within a range of 0.02 to 2.0 μg mL-1 . The detection limit range was 3.0 to 10.0 μg L-1 (signal-to-noise ratio = 3). The method was successfully used to detect and quantify the residues of quinalphos and its analogs in tomato, cabbage, barley and water samples; all spiked samples gave satisfactory recovery rates for the target analytes of between 82% and 98%, with a relative SD of 3.6% to 7.8%. CONCLUSION The results obtained show that the proposed method is an accurate, rapid and reliable sample pre-treatment method with respect to giving a good enrichment factor and detection limit for determining quinalphos pesticide residues in different food samples. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
A solid-phase microextraction probe was prepared on the surface of a stainless-steel wire through molecular sol-gel imprinting technology using chlorpyrifos as a template molecule, tetraethoxysilane as a sol-gel precursor, and acrylamide and β-cyclodextrin as functional monomers. The polymer was characterized by infrared spectrometry and scanning electron microscopy. Moreover, the selectivity and the parameters including the type and volume of the extraction solvents, ionic strength, pH, temperature, extraction time, stirring speed, and desorption time affecting extraction performance were evaluated. Under the optimum solid-phase microextraction and gas chromatography conditions, the linear ranges were 0.25-25.0 μg/L for chlorpyrifos, quinalphos, triazophos, pirimiphos-methyl, and chlorpyrifos-methyl with the correlation coefficient above 0.99. The detection limits (S/N = 3) were in the range of 0.02-0.07 μg/L and the RSDs were <7.3%. The developed method was successfully used to determine the multi-residues of chlorpyrifos, quinalphos, triazophos, pirimiphos-methyl, and chlorpyrifos-methyl in green peppers and cinnamon with satisfactory recoveries.

Abstract
A method for the sensitive quantification of trace amounts of organic explosives in water samples was developed by using stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) followed by liquid desorption and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). The proposed method was developed and optimized using a statistical design of experiment approach. Use of experimental designs allowed a complete study of 10 factors and 8 analytes including nitro-aromatics, amino-nitro-aromatics and nitric esters. The liquid desorption study was performed using a full factorial experimental design followed by a kinetic study. Four different variables were tested here: the liquid desorption mode (stirring or sonication), the chemical nature of the stir bar (PDMS or PDMS-PEG), the composition of the liquid desorption phase and finally, the volume of solvent used for the liquid desorption. On the other hand, the SBSE extraction study was performed using a Doehlert design. SBSE extraction conditions such as extraction time profiles, sample volume, modifier addition, and acetic acid addition were examined. After optimization of the experimental parameters, sensitivity was improved by a factor 5-30, depending on the compound studied, due to the enrichment factors reached using the SBSE method. Limits of detection were in the ng/L level for all analytes studied. Reproducibility of the extraction with different stir bars was close to the reproducibility of the analytical method (RSD between 4 and 16%). Extractions in various water sample matrices (spring, mineral and underground water) have shown similar enrichment compared to ultrapure water, revealing very low matrix effects.

Abstract
A robust method has been developed for easy transfer between analytical laboratories to obtain highly accurate and reproducible quantification of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in micro-volumes of serum. This method is suited for analysts researching the impact of environmental exposure on human health. When performed by highly trained analysts, existing methods can produce high quality data; however, complex sample preparation steps often cannot be consistently replicated by laboratories, leading to variance in extraction recovery and quantitation. By combining stir-bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) with direct isotope dilution (D-ID) mass spectrometry quantification, a new analytical method was developed. The D-ID quantification significantly improved accuracy, corrected sample-to-sample irreproducibility, and reduced sample preparation time. Independent production of statistically identical data then confirmed transfer of the validated operating protocol to an off-site laboratory with different instrument models. SBSE performance was compared with industry-accepted extraction techniques. D-ID quantification was compared with peer-reviewed relative isotopic response factor (RF) quantification methods. Holding other variables constant, D-ID improved accuracy by 250% and precision by 300% compared with RF; SBSE improved accuracy by 37% compared to industry-accepted extraction methods. Limits of quantification of the analytes ranged from 60 pg g(-1) to 1 μg g(-1). Protocol transfer exhibited <7% mean between-laboratory error and <2% mean within-laboratory RSD. These results indicate that a transferable method has been developed for academic, government, commercial, and clinical laboratories seeking to maximize throughput and improve quantitative validity. This validated method was applied in a recent clinical study to assess non-communicable disease in children in Pennsylvania, USA.

Abstract
Among the different organic pollutants, persistent organic pollutants and emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) are of particular concern due to their potentially dangerous effects on the ecosystems and on human health. In the framework of the analysis of some of these organic pollutants in water samples, sorptive extraction devices have proven to be adequate for their monitoring. The efficiency of four commercially available and low-cost polymeric materials [polypropylene, poly(ethylene terephthalate), Raffia, and polyethersulfone (PES)] for the simultaneous extraction of 16 organic compounds from five different families from environmental water samples was evaluated in this work. Firstly, the homogeneity of the sorbent materials was confirmed by means of Raman spectroscopy. After the optimization of the parameters affecting the extraction and the liquid desorption steps, it was found that PES showed the largest efficiencies for slightly polar analytes and, to a lesser extent, for nonpolar analytes. Additionally, Raffia rendered good extraction efficiencies for nonpolar compounds. Thus sorptive extraction methods followed by large volume injection-programmable temperature vaporizer-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry were validated using PES and Raffia as sorbent materials. The validation of the method provided good linearity (0.978 < r (2) < 0.999 for PES and 0.977 < r (2) < 0.999 for Raffia), adequate repeatability (below 19 % and 14 % for PES and Raffia, respectively), and low method detection limits (low ng · l(-1) level). Finally, these materials were applied to the analysis of contaminants in environmental water samples.

Abstract
Seasonal input of organic pollutants through El Albujón Watercourse to the Mar Menor lagoon was estimated from Spring 2009 to Winter 2010, including regular periods and two flash flood events. 82 semivolatile organic pollutants (persistent organic pollutants, different groups of pesticides and others) were determined by stir bar sorptive extraction and thermal desorption followed by capillary gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry from surface waters with quantification limits of a few ngL(-1). Pesticide concentrations varied significantly along the watercourse due to the presence of different sources (groundwaters, wastewater effluent, tributary contributions, brackish waters, etc.) and physicochemical/biological processes that take place simultaneously. The most commonly detected analytes were propyzamide, triazine compounds and chlorpyrifos. A clear seasonal pattern has been detected, with a predominance of insecticides during Summer and of herbicides during Winter. The input of pesticides through this watercourse is particularly relevant during periods of heavy rain, representing more than 70% of total yearly input for many of them.

Abstract
Membrane-assisted solvent extraction coupled to large volume injection in a programmable temperature vaporisation injector using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis was optimised for the simultaneous determination of a variety of endocrine disrupting compounds in environmental water samples (estuarine, river and wastewater). Among the analytes studied, certain hormones, alkylphenols and bisphenol A were included. The nature of membranes, extraction solvent, extraction temperature, solvent volume, extraction time, ionic strength and methanol addition were evaluated during the optimisation of the extraction. Matrix effects during the extraction step were studied in different environmental water samples: estuarine water, river water and wastewater (influent and effluent). Strong matrix effects were observed for most of the compounds in influent and effluent samples. Different approaches were studied in order to correct or minimise matrix effects, which included the use of deuterated analogues, matrix-matched calibration, standard addition calibration, dilution of the sample and clean-up of the extract using solid-phase extraction (SPE). The use of deuterated analogues corrected satisfactorily matrix effect for estuarine and effluent samples for most of the compounds. However, in the case of influent samples, standard addition calibration and dilution of the sample were the best approaches. The SPE clean-up provided similar recoveries to those obtained after correction with the corresponding deuterated analogue but better chromatographic signal was obtained in the case of effluent samples. Method detection limits in the 5-54 ng L(-1) range and precision, calculated as relative standard deviation, in the 2-25% range were obtained.

Abstract
A simple and efficient directly suspended droplet microextraction (DSDME) has been developed to extract and pre-concentrate organochlorine and pyrethrin pesticides from tea samples prior to analysis by a gas chromatography-electron capture detector (GC-ECD). The optimal experimental conditions of DSDME were: 100 μL isooctane exposed for 15 min to 5 mL of the tea aqueous sample stirred at 1100 rpm. For most of the target analytes, the optimal pretreatment of DSDME processes led to no significant interference of tea matrices. The approach was applied to the determination of organochlorine and pyrethroid pesticides in tea samples, with a linearity range of 0.0005-2 μg/mL. The relative recoveries of all the pesticides ranged between 80.0% and 120.8% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) in the range of 0.8-19.9% (n=5). The limits of detections (LODs) ranged between 0.04 and 1 μg/L for all the target pesticides.

Abstract
The effects of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) resulting from a water soluble fraction (WSF) of an Arabian crude oil were tested in vivo on the bioconcentration in muscles and on immune parameters in sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax. After 15 days of acclimation, fish were acutely exposed (48 h) to the WSF of 25 g of oil, and then returned to clean sea water for a 15 day recovery period. PAH concentration in the WSF at the beginning of the exposure was estimated to 773±187 ng L⁻¹ similar to that observed in the marine environment after an oil spill. The WSF in the experimental system was composed by lightest PAH compounds and did not remain constant during the two days of exposure. Just after exposure to the WSF, a total mean concentration of 148±46 μg kg⁻¹ of PAHs was found in contaminated fish muscle, composed of parent and alkylated naphthalene compounds (86.5%), benzo[a]pyrene (10.1%) and benzo[b+k]fluoranthene (3.4%). In addition, a decrease of leucocytes counts due to a lymphopenia and granulopenia and an increase of the haemolytic activity of the alternative pathway (ACH₅₀) were noted. After a 15 day recovery period, haematocrit was decreased whereas effects on the blood granulocytes of fish seemed to be reversible, contrary to the specific immune system and quality of flesh. In fact, contaminated fish had still less lymphocyte cells compared to controls fish and their flesh were still contaminated by naphthalene and benzo[a]pyrene creating a risk for human consumers.

Abstract
Analysis of pesticides and their metabolites in food and water matrices continues to be an active research area closely related to food safety and environmental issues. This review discusses the most widely applied mass spectrometric (MS) approaches to pesticide residues analysis over the last few years. The main techniques for sample preparation remain solvent extraction and solid-phase extraction. The QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, Safe) approach is being increasingly used for the development of multi-class pesticide residues methods in various sample matrices. MS detectors-triple quadrupole (QqQ), ion-trap (IT), quadrupole linear ion trap (QqLIT), time-of-flight (TOF), and quadrupole time-of-flight (QqTOF)-have been established as powerful analytical tools sharing a primary role in the detection/quantification and/or identification/confirmation of pesticides and their metabolites. Recent developments in analytical instrumentation have enabled coupling of ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) and fast gas chromatography (GC) with MS detectors, and faster analysis for a greater number of pesticides. The newly developed "ambient-ionization" MS techniques (e.g., desorption electrospray ionization, DESI, and direct analysis in real time, DART) hyphenated with high-resolution MS platforms without liquid chromatography separation, and sometimes with minimum pre-treatment, have shown potential for pesticide residue screening. The recently introduced Orbitrap mass spectrometers can provide high resolving power and mass accuracy, to tackle complex analytical problems involved in pesticide residue analysis.

Abstract
A multiresidue method for the analysis of 86 persistent pollutants in marine sediments at ultra-trace level has been developed and validated using pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) and stir-bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) coupled with thermal desorption and gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (TD-GC-MS/MS QqQ). The compounds analyzed belong to various families such as polychlorinated biphenyls, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polybrominated diphenylethers, organophosphorus and organochlorine pesticides and other pesticides such as urons, and triazines. The analytes have very different polarities and log K(ow) values, which is an important parameter in the optimization of a SBSE method. Due to PLE high efficiency and throughput rates, along with the proven ability for multiresidue analysis and excellent sensitivity of SBSE, we present an efficient method. The limits of quantification obtained ranged from 0.014 to 1.0 ng g(-1), with detection limits below pg g(-1) levels. In order to validate the proposed methodology, quality parameters such as recovery, linearity and reproducibility were studied. Recoveries ranged from 63% to 119%, reproducibility (in terms of Relative Standard Deviation for ten determinations) was lower than 35% in all cases, and determination coefficients higher than 0.990 for all analytes. The main factors that affect PLE, SBSE and GC-MS/MS procedures were optimized. The method was applied to the analysis of nine marine sediments obtained from the nine main submarine wastewater discharge points (emissaries) presents along the coast of Tenerife Island (Canary Islands, Spain).

Abstract
Five organophosphorus pesticides (dichlorvos, diazinon, malathion, methyl parathion and coumaphos) were extracted from propolis by matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) extraction using octadecylsilica (C18, 1.0 g) as dispersant material. The kind of solvent elution (acetonitrile or ethyl acetate), volume (8 mL and 15 mL), and adsorbent used to clean-up the extracts (graphitized carbon, florisil™ and silica) were optimized using fortified propolis samples (5.0 μg g(-1)). Recovery was determined by gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection in selected ion monitoring mode (GC/MS-SIM) and statistical analysis was done to determine better extraction conditions. Relatively high recovery and lower relative standard deviation values (3.1-14.6%) were obtained when analytes were eluted with ethyl acetate from the MSPD column. Diazinon, malathion, methyl parathion, and coumaphos show recoveries of 72.7%, 84.6%, 62.6%, and 78.3%, respectively. In contrast, the recovery for dichlorvos was 53.8%. Additional adsorbents tested for clean-up and increase in solvent elution did not affect recoveries positively and caused a high background in chromatograms. Thus, final conditions were 1 mL of sample, 1 g C18 and 8 mL of ethyl acetate.

Abstract
A novel analytical approach to determine trace levels of 20 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in nine vegetable matrices (lettuce, spinach, green bean, green pepper, tomato, broccoli, potato, carrot and onion) is proposed, based on stir bar sorptive extraction followed by liquid desorption and large volume injection-gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry using the selected-ion monitoring mode acquisition (SBSE-LD/LVI-GC-MS(SIM)). The experimental procedure consists of a previous ultrasonic extraction of the freeze-dried vegetable samples (100.0mg) with methanol (2mL) followed by centrifugation and dissolution in aqueous media prior to SBSE-LD/LVI-GC-MS(SIM) under optimised conditions. Assays were performed on 30mL aqueous samples using stir bars coated with 47microL of polydimethylsiloxane, an equilibrium time of 180min (1000rpm; 20 degrees C) and acetonitrile as back-extraction solvent, providing convenient analytical performance to monitor OCPs in vegetable matrices at the trace level. Besides the selectivity reached, the data obtained clearly demonstrate that the matrices involved have a strong effect on the recovery yields (10-110%) of the OCPs under study, in particular the green vegetables especially the leafy ones. By using the standard addition methodology, good linearity (r(2)>0.99) and convenient precisions (RSD<20%) were found for almost all cases, depending on the particular OCP and vegetable matrix involved. Furthermore enough sensitivity was also achieved (limit of detection <10microgkg(-1)) for all OCPs under study towards compliance with the European Union regulations for the maximum residue limits of pesticides in agricultural vegetables. The methodology showed to be easy of work-up, fast, almost solventless with low sample amount requirement, when compared with conventional methods of sample preparation to screen pesticides in vegetable matrices.
