Abstract
The design and development of a facile synthesis approach to construct novel materials for the rapid adsorption and removal of environmental pollutants are of significant interest. In this work, we report the rational design and facile synthesis of magnetic core-shell-based microporous organic networks, Fe3O4@MON-TBPT-TEB (TTMON, achieved by reacting 2,4,6-tris(p-bromophenyl) triazine and 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene) and Fe3O4@MON-TBPM-DEBP (TDMON, achieved by reacting tetrakis (4-bromophenyl) methane and 4-4'-diethynylbiphenyl). These MONs possessed excellent dispersity, electrostatic attraction as well as plenty of π-π and hydrophobic interaction sites enabled them to efficiently absorb targeted environmental pollutants. TTMON and TDMON exhibited excellent adsorption capacities of 440 and 510 mg g-1, respectively, at 25 °C for 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP). TCP, 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP), 2-naphthol (2-NT) and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) from aqueous solution were treated by both MONs, followed by their analysis with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). For TDMON, the proposed SPE-HPLC-UV method showed an LOD of 0.03 μg L-1, LOQ of 0.11 μg L-1, and a wide linear range of 1-1000 μg L-1 for TCP. The adsorption kinetics, thermodynamics, isotherms, effect of pH and humic acid (HA), ionic strength, regeneration, and reusability of the MONs were also studied. The results revealed that the novel-designed MONs have potential applications as efficient adsorbents in sample pretreatment.

Abstract
The large use and emission of p-nitrophenol (p-NP) seriously pollute the environment and endanger human health. In this work, a hydrazone-linked fluorescent covalent organic framework (BATHz-COF) was simply synthesized at room temperature and covalently linked N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NALC) via the "thiol-ene" click reaction, where carboxyl groups were introduced to improve dispersion and fluorescence intensity. As a rapid, good selectivity and reusability fluorescence sensor, the obtained COF-NALC has been used for quantitative analysis of p-NP predicated on the internal filtering effect (IFE). Under optimal conditions, COF-NALC enabled quantitative detection of p-NP with a linear range of 5-50 μM and the detection limit was 1.46 μM. The application of COF-NALC to the detection of p-NP in river water samples was successful, and the satisfactory recoveries were 98.0%-109.3%. Furthermore, the fluorescent COF paper chips constructed by in situ growth were combined with a smartphone to build a visual platform for the quick and real-time detection of p-NP, providing an excellent illustration for the development of intelligent fluorescence sensing in environmental analysis.

Abstract
Traditional sample preparation techniques based on liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) or solid-phase extraction (SPE) often suffer from a major error due to the matrix effects caused by significant co-extraction of matrix components. The implementation of a modern extraction technique such as solid-phase microextraction (SPME) was aimed at reducing analysis time and the use of organic solvents, as well as eliminating pre-analytical and analytical errors. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) is an innovative technique for extracting low molecular weight compounds (less than 1500 Da) from highly complex matrices, including biological matrices. It has a wide range of applications in various types of analysis including pharmaceutical, clinical, metabolomics and proteomics. SPME has a number of advantages over other extraction techniques. Among the most important are low environmental impact, the ability to sample and preconcentrate analytes in one step, simple automation, and the ability to extract multiple analytes simultaneously. It is expected to become, in the future, another method for cell cycle research. Numerous available literature sources prove that solid-phase microextraction can be a future technique in many scientific fields, including pharmaceutical sciences. This paper provides a literature review of trends in SPME coatings and pharmacological applications.

Abstract
Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) is a sample pretreatment technique for enrichment of trace level of compounds from complex matrices. The fiber coating, as an extraction phase, is the significant part of SPME, which specifying the analytical performance of the developed SPME. In this study, a novel in situ fabricated Cu@porous carbon fiber that derived from copper benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate framework@pencil graphite (Cu-BDC MOF@PG) fiber was prepared as a SPME fiber. The Cu-BDC MOF was electrodeposited on the surface of pencil graphite. The Cu@porous carbon fiber with nanoporous structure was constructed by the direct carbonization of the electrosynthesized fiber. The Cu@porous carbon fiber showed high analytical performance for direct immersion SPME (DI-SPME) of acetamiprid and imidacloprid in fruit and vegetable samples. The SPME method was coupled by high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection (SPME-HPLC-UV) for determination of the analytes. Under the optimized condition, good linear ranges (1-500 μg L-1 and 0.5-200 μg L-1) and acceptable limits of detection (LODs = 0.30 and 0.15 μg L-1), appropriate spiking recoveries in the range 87-109.0% were attained for acetamiprid and imidacloprid, respectively. Intra- and inter-day relative standard deviations were found within the ranges of 2.35-3.46% and 3.30-3.70%, respectively. These results signify promising potential of the in situ fabricated porous carbon fiber for SPME applications. Considering that most of the pencil graphite is made of carbon, after the carbonization of the Cu-BDC MOF@PG fiber, a unified porous carbon fiber is obtained. Compared to other reported procedures, in situ direct carbonization of Cu-BDC MOF@PG fiber was a one-step and straightforward method to fabricate carbon fiber.

Abstract
Glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was electrochemically activated using a repetitive cyclic voltammetric technique to develop an activated glassy carbon electrode (AGCE). The developed AGCE was optimized and utilized for the electrochemical assay of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and dopamine (DA). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) was employed to investigate the electrochemical behavior of the AGCE. Compared to the bare GCE, the developed AGCE exhibits a significant increase in redox peak currents of 4-NP and DA, which indicates that the AGCE significantly improves the electrocatalytic reduction of 4-NP and oxidation of DA. The electrochemical signature of the activation process could be directly associated with the formation of oxygen-containing surface functional groups (OxSFGs), which are the main reason for the improved electron transfer ability and the enhancement of the electrocatalytic activity of the AGCE. The effects of various parameters on the voltammetric responses of the AGCE toward 4-NP and DA were studied and optimized, including the pH, scan rate, and accumulation time. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was also utilized to investigate the analytical performance of the AGCE sensing platform. The optimized AGCE exhibited linear responses over the concentration ranges of 0.04-65 μM and 65-370 μM toward 4-NP with a lower limit of detection (LOD) of 0.02 μM (S/N = 3). Additionally, the AGCE exhibited a linear responses over the concentration ranges of 0.02-1.0 and 1.0-100 μM toward DA with a lower limit of detection (LOD) of 0.01 μM (S/N = 3). Moreover, the developed AGCE-based 4-NP and DA sensors are distinguished by their high sensitivity, excellent selectivity, and repeatability. The developed sensors were successfully applied for the determination of 4-NP and DA in real samples with satisfactory recovery results.

Abstract
Electromembrane extraction (EME) is an extraction method on the micro scale, in which charged compounds are extracted from a donor phase (sample solution) into an acceptor phase via a supported liquid membrane (SLM) containing a water-immiscible organic solvent. To enhance the extraction efficiency and selectivity in this method, some studies have focused on the modification of the SLM, and thus many strategies have been reported for this purpose. One of these techniques is the introduction of nanomaterials in the SLM structure, which can enhance the extraction efficiency. In the current study, the different nanostructures used for SLM modification in the EME method are reviewed. Furthermore, the related analytical parameters of the developed techniques are classified and tabulated. It is hoped that this review will motivate further research in this field using other nanostructures.

Abstract
Due to the impacts of water scarcity, the world is looking at all possible solutions for decreasing the over-exploitation of finite freshwater resources. Wastewater is one of the most reliable and accessible water supplies. As the population expands, so do industrial, agricultural, and household operations in order to meet man’s enormous demands. These operations generate huge amounts of wastewater, which may be recovered and used for a variety of reasons. Conventional wastewater treatment techniques have had some success in treating effluents for discharge throughout the years. However, advances in wastewater treatment techniques are required to make treated wastewater suitable for industrial, agricultural, and household use. Diverse techniques for removing heavy metal ions from various water and wastewater sources have been described. These treatments can be categorized as adsorption, membrane, chemical, or electric. Membrane technology has been developed as a popular alternative for recovering and reusing water from various water and wastewater sources. This study integrates useful membrane technology techniques for water and wastewater treatment containing heavy metals, with the objective of establishing a low-cost, high-efficiency method as well as ideal production conditions: low-cost, high-efficiency selective membranes, and maximum flexibility and selectivity. Future studies should concentrate on eco-friendly, cost-effective, and long-term materials and procedures.

Abstract
Elucidating the enantiomeric chemistry and enantioselective fate of the novel chiral triazole fungicide mefentrifluconazole is of vital importance for agroecosystem safety and human health. The absolute configuration of mefentrifluconazole was identified firstly as S-(+)-mefentrifluconazole and R-(-)-mefentrifluconazole on a cellulose tris(3-chloro-4-methylphenylcarbamate) chiral phase. A baseline resolution (Rs, 2.51), favorable retention (RT ≤ 2.24 min), and high sensitivity (LOQ, 0.5 μg/kg) of enantiomer pair were achieved by reversed-phase liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry combined with a 3D response surface strategy. Nationwide field trials were undertaken to clarify the enantiomer occurrence, enantioselective dissipation, terminal concentrations, and storage stability of S-mefentrifluconazole and R-mefentrifluconazole in watermelon across China. The original deposition of the sum of enantiomer pair was estimated to be 14.4-163.7 μg/kg, and terminally decreased to < LOQ-59.3 μg/kg 10 days after foliage application. S-mefentrifluconazole preferentially degraded (T1/2, 3.3-6.0 days), resulting in the relative enrichment of R-mefentrifluconazole (T1/2, 3.9-6.6 days) in watermelon. A probabilistic model is recommended for the dietary risk assessment, although both acute (%ARfD, 0.435-22.188%) and chronic (%ADI, 1.697-9.658%) risks are acceptable for associated population. The long-term exposures should be continuously emphasized given the increasing applications and persistent fate of mefentrifluconazole, especially for urban children.

Abstract
Fe-bearing salt and minerals are common reagents used in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for Fenton-like oxidation in wastewater treatment. Fe-bearing reagents are used in mass production, which generate abundant Fe-bearing waste sludge in the absence of a reductant for Fe3+/Fe2+ cycling. Herein, a novel Fe/S-bearing mineral, erdite, was synthesized with a one-step hydrothermal route. The material exerted an Fe/S synergetic effect for p-nitrophenol degradation upon PMS activation and showed a one-dimensional structure similar to that of (FeS2)nn-. It contained short rods with diameters of 100 nm and lengths ranging from 200 to 400 nm. It grew radically to 0.8-2 μm in length upon the addition of MnO2. Ps-0.5, prepared by adding MnO2 in an Mn/Fe molar ratio of 0.5, showed optimal efficiency in removing approximately 99.4% of p-nitrophenol upon PMS activation. Only 3.3% of p-nitrophenol was removed without MnO2. The efficiency of p-nitrophenol removal through Ps-0.5 activation was higher than that through FeSO4, nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI), CuFeS2, and MnSO4 activation. The formed erdite rods were spontaneously hydrolyzed to Fe/S-bearing flocs, in which an electron was used by structural S to reduce Fe3+ to Fe2+ upon PMS activation. The reduction resulted in a high p-nitrophenol removal rate. This study provided new insight into the development of an effective PMS activator in wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Based on batch experiments, we investigate the adsorption characteristics of Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cu(II) on multi-walled carbon nanotube-hydroxyapatite (MWCNT-HAP) composites in detail and explore the effects of the solid-to-liquid ratio, pH, the ionic strength, reaction time and temperature on adsorption. The results show that the adsorption on MWCNT-HAP follows Pb(II)>Cu(II)>Cd(II). With an increasing solid-to-liquid ratio, the adsorption quantity of Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cu(II) on MWCNT-HAP decreases, whereas the removal efficiency increases. The optimal pH for adsorption is 4.0∼6.0. The effect of the ionic strength on the adsorption of Cd(II) is pronounced, whereas that on the adsorption of Pb(II) and Cu(II) is small. In the single-component system and ternary-component system, the adsorption processes for Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cu(II) on MWCNT-HAP have fast kinetics, and the pseudo-second-order kinetics model can well describe the adsorption kinetics of the three heavy metals. The adsorption of Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cu(II) on MWCNT-HAP is spontaneous and endothermic, and the Langmuir model can well simulate the isothermal adsorption of Pb(II) and Cu(II), whereas the Langmuir and Freundlich models can be used to describe the isothermal adsorption of Cd(II).

Abstract
An efficient sorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction was developed from Fe3 O4 nanoparticles covered with aminated hypercrosslinked polystyrene. The sorbent has a saturation magnetization of 47 emu/g and a surface area of 509 mg/g and was tested for the extraction of 11 phenols from aqueous media. The optimum conditions were as follows: pH 3; adsorbent mass, 20.0 mg; adsorption time, 30 min; eluent (acetone) volume, 0.5 mL; and desorption time, 5 min. The enrichment factor after desorption reached 1595-1716 and the maximum adsorption capacity was 501-909 mg/g. Capillary electrophoresis was applied successively to separate 11 phenols after solid-phase extraction. The best separation was achieved using a fused silica capillary and borate buffer (pH 10.7) as a supporting electrolyte. After optimization, the linearity range was from 0.2 to 950 μg/L, and the limits of detection were 0.05-0.2 μg/L. The relative standard deviation varied from 6.1 to 8.7% (C = 1 μg/L) and from 2.9 to 3.5% (C = 500 μg/L). The determination of phenols is complicated in eutrophic water and spring water with a high content of humic and fulvic acids.

Abstract
In this work, poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) modified molybdenum disulfide quantum dots (MoS2-PSS QDs) were synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method using l-cysteine and anhydrous sodium molybdate as precursors and PSS as a modification reagent, and a selective and sensitive fluorescent sensing method for the determination of p-nitrophenol (p-NP) based on their UV emission was developed. The obtained MoS2-PSS QDs have an obvious UV emission peak (390 nm) with quantum yield of 5.13%. The strong absorption peak of p-NP at 400 nm has large spectral overlap with the UV emission peak (390 nm) of MoS2-PSS QDs. Because of this p-NP absorption, the fluorescence of MoS2-PSS QDs at 390 nm is quenched with the introduction of p-NP via the inner filter effect (IFE) and the decreased fluorescence intensity was linearly proportional to the p-NP concentration in the range of 1–20 μmol/L, leading to a detection limit of 0.13 μmol/L for p-NP. The MoS2 QDs-based fluorescent probe for p-NP is sensitive and selective and was successfully applied in the determination of p-NP in the pond water samples with satisfactory results.

Abstract
Methods and experiments In this study, a functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-coated solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber was developed for concentrating analytes in aqueous samples. Sodium deoxycholate (NaDC) was used as a dispersing agent for non-covalent modification of MWCNTs. The coating showed porous structure and large adsorption capacity. To investigate the capability of this MWCNTs/NaDC SPME fiber, it was applied to the analysis of phenols in aqueous solution. After extraction, the analytes were desorbed in an acetonitrile–water solution and analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography. Results The MWCNTs/NaDC fiber exhibited good analytical performance, and fine preparation reproducibility was obtained with the relative standard deviations (RSDs) ranging from 4.9% to 10.2% (n = 6) in one batch, from 5.7% to 11.9% (n = 3) among different batches. Under the optimum extraction conditions, the detection limits were 0.15–0.30 ng/mL(S/N = 3), the linear detection ranges were 1–100 ng/mL (R2 ≥ 0.9997) for these analytes, and good recoveries (80.3–95.4%) were obtained for the spiked samples. Conclusion This is a simple and accurate pretreatment method for the analysis of phenols in aqueous samples.

Abstract
To understand the effect of Cl doping in carbon dots, nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-Cdots) and nitrogen and chlorine dual-doped carbon dots (Cl,N-Cdots) were fabricated by high-temperature carbonization and low-temperature concentrated acid (HCl) acidification of dried shaddock peel, respectively. The quantum yield of Cl,N-Cdots is about four times of that of N-Cdots and the size of Cl,N-Cdots is smaller than that of N-Cdots. Furthermore, since trinitrophenol (PA) and ClO- could effectively quench the fluorescence of Cl,N-Cdots, the fluorescence sensors for determining PA and ClO- was constructed, respectively. The linear range of PA and ClO- are 0.9-90 μM and 3.24-216 μM with the limit of detection of 37.1 nM and 2.88 μM, respectively. The proposed sensor was used to detect PA in Taiyuan tap water, Wutai tap water, Wutai rain water and Wutai river water samples with encouraging results. The as-constructed sensor was also used to detect ClO- in Taiyuan tap water and commercial disinfectants. Last but not least, Cl,N-Cdots was employed as an agent for A549 and HeLa cell-imaging, possessing optimal imaging effect and ultra-low cytotoxicity. Our results suggested that Cl,N-Cdots has promising applications in sensing, water monitoring, commodity supervision and cell-imaging.

Abstract
Novel fluorescent anthracene-decorated cyclotri- and cyclotetraphosphazenes (5 and 6) are designed and synthesized, and their chemosensor behaviors against nitroaromatic compounds are examined by UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopies for addressing the sensors with cyclophosphazenes for 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene detection. The fluorescence intensities of (5 and 6) are found to be selectively quenched by only 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene through the non-covalent π⋯π stacking interactions between anthracene-substituted cyclophosphazenes and 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene. In addition, cyclic voltammetry and theoretical calculation of novel sensor systems are studied. The proposed fluorescent sensor systems are critical in terms of practical detection of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene.

Abstract
A facile and economical hydrothermal approach is reported for preparing fluorescent nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) via using o-phenylenediamine and dicyandiamine. Herein, the bright-yellow-emissive N-CDs are uniformly dispersed spherical nanoparticles with favorable solubility, superior photoluminescence and photobleaching resistance. The fluorescence intensity of N-CDs is linearly quenched by 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) over a concentration range of 0.1-39 μM, corresponding to a detection limit (LOD) of 0.05 μM. Based on this phenomenon, a 4-NP-detection method is exploited and applied to real samples analysis. The synthesized N-CDs are highly biocompatible and capable of biological imaging. Therefore, they are excellent candidates for live biological imaging.

Abstract
Direct immersion solid phase microextraction (DI-SPME) coupled to liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) is of significant research interest because of its low solvent consumption, simple design, and efficient, sensitive, fast performance. In this work, a combination of these two methods (DI-SPME-LC-MS) for the determination of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) in water was developed. Important factors, which included temperature, stirring rate, salt concentration, pH value and adsorption time, were evaluated in for the optimization of solid phase microextraction (SPME) method. The method was developed using spiked natural waters in a concentration range of 0.1-10 ng mL-1, and showed notable linearity with regression coefficients ranging between 0.992 and 0.999. The limits of detection varied from 0.01 to 0.04 ng mL-1 (at S/N = 3) and relative standard deviation (RSD < 11%) were obtained showing that the precision of the method was reliable. Recoveries were in relatively high levels for both analytes and ranged from 88% to 108%. Moreover, in comparison with the performance time of traditional sample pretreatment methods such as solid-phase extraction (SPE), accelerated solvent extraction (ASE), and liquid-liquid extraction (LLE), DI-SPME-LC-MS takes only approximately 35 min to perform. The optimized method was successfully applied for monitoring concentrations of TBBPA and HBCD in water.

Abstract
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted a lot of attention as effective sorbents due to their strong sorption properties and several potential applications in many fields. In this work, the acid oxidized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH) was coated onto a stainless steel wire by a simple physical adhesion approach to develop solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fibers. By combination of the MWCNTs-COOH coated fiber-based headspace SPME and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), the developed method demonstrates a good enhancement factor (288-651), low limits of detection (LODs, 0.2-1.3μg/L) for determination of amphetamine-type stimulant drugs (ATSs) in urine samples. The recoveries of the spiked ATSs (5, 50 and 500μg/L) were in the range of 88-107%, the calibration curve was linear for concentrations of analytes in the range from 0.5 to 1000μg/L (R=0.963-0.999). Furthermore, single fiber repeatability and fiber-to-fiber reproducibility were in the range of 2.3%-6.2% (n=6) and 5.7%-9.8% (n=3), respectively. The MWCNTs-COOH coated fiber is highly thermally stable and can be used over 150 times. The method was successfully applied to the forensic determination of amphetamine (AMP) and methamphetamine (MAMP) in human urine samples and satisfactory results were achieved.

Abstract
p-Nitrophenol (p-NP) contaminants seriously endanger environmental and living beings health, hence to establish a sensitive and selective method is of great importance for the determination of p-NP. In this work, boron and nitrogen co-doped carbon dots (B,N-CDs) were synthesized by one-step hydrothermal method using 3-aminophenylboronic acid as the sole precursor. The product was characterized through high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Without any functionalized modification, B,N-CDs can be directly applied as a 'turn-off' fluorescent probe for rapid, highly selective, and sensitive detection of p-NP. The fluorescent sensor based on the B,N-CDs exhibited a broad linear response to the concentration of p-NP in the range of 0.5 - 60 μM and 60 - 200 μM, respectively, and provided a detection limit of 0.2 μM. It was found that only the absorption spectrum of p-NP has a wide overlap with the fluorescence excitation and emission spectra of B,N-CDs compared to those of other representative analogues. The response mechanism was due to the inner filter effect and the formation of dynamic covalent B-O bonds between B,N-CDs and p-NP, which endowed the sensing platform with the rapid response and high selectivity to p-NP. Finally, the sensor showed the practicability of p-NP determination in environmental water samples.

Abstract
4-Nitrophenol (4-NP) is a priority pollutant in water and is both carcinogenic and genotoxic to humans and wildlife even at very low concentrations. Thus, we herein fabricated a novel molecularly imprinted core-shell nanohybrid as a ratiometric fluorescent sensor for the highly sensitive and selective detection of 4-NP. This sensor was functioned by the transfer of fluorescence resonance energy between photoluminescent carbon dots (CDs) and 4-NP. This sensor was synthesized by linking organosilane-functionalized CDs to silica-coated CdSe quantum dots (CdSe@SiO2) via Si-O bonds. The nanohybrids were further modified by anchoring a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) layer on the ratiometric fluorescent sensor through a facile sol-gel polymerization method. The morphology, chemical structure, and optical properties of the resulting molecularly imprinted dual-emission fluorescent probe were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and spectroscopic analysis. The probe was then applied in the detection of 4-NP and exhibited good linearity between 0.051 and 13.7 μg/mL, in addition to a low detection limit of 0.026 μg/mL. Furthermore, the simplicity, reliability, high selectivity, and high sensitivity of the developed sensor demonstrate that the combination of MIPs and ratiometric fluorescence allows the preparation of excellent fluorescent sensors for the detection of trace or ultra-trace analytes.
