Abstract
An investigative biomonitoring study was conducted along the coastal area of Laizhou Bay (China) to evaluate the impact of organic pollution on the clam Ruditapes philippinarum using bioaccumulation and multi-biomarker measurements. In addition, the polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) and nonylphenol (NP) content in surface sediment at the study sites were also analyzed. Concentrations of PCBs, TPHs and NP in the sediments of the study area were 1.90 ± 0.10 μg kg-1, 39.55 ± 2.42 mg kg-1, 9.23 ± 0.41 μg kg-1 dry weight, respectively, while the organic contaminants in the soft tissues of R. philippinarum were 14.81 ± 0.96 μg kg-1 for PCBs, 165.87 ± 5.03 mg kg-1 for TPHs and 86.16 ± 5.29 μg kg-1 for NP. Linear regression analysis on the levels of organic pollutants accumulated in R. philippinarum and in sediments showed no significant correlation. Multi-biomarkers including superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione S-transferase, total glutathione and lipid peroxidation were assayed in gills and digestive glands of R. philippinarum. Finally, the biomarkers in gills were selected to calculate the Integrated Biomarker Response (IBR) index and to evaluate the impact of the three organic contaminants on R. philippinarum collected from different sites. According to IBR results, the western coast and eastern coast exhibited higher environmental stress than the sampling sites along the southern coast of Laizhou Bay. Significant correlation was found between the level of organic contaminants in the sediments and IBR whereas no dependence was found between pollutants' concentrations in sediments and separate biomarker responses. The results showed that PCBs and NP were the main organic pollutants among the three studied which have caused pollution pressure on R. philippinarum in Laizhou Bay coastal area.

Abstract
A systematic study has been carried out to assess the contamination of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in five highly urbanized coastal cities spanning from temperate to subtropical environments along the coastline of China. In each of these cities, species of native mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis, M. coruscus or Perna viridis) were deployed alongside with semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs) for one month at a reference site and a polluted site. The level of 4-nonylphenol (4-NP), bisphenol A (BPA), 17β-estradiol (E2) and 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) in SPMDs and transplanted mussels were determined and compared. The concentration of EDCs in mussels from polluted sites of Qingdao and Shenzhen ranged from 99.4±9.40 to 326.1±3.16ng/g dry wt. for 4-NP, Dalian and Shanghai from 170.3±4.00 to 437.2±36.8ng/g dry wt. for BPA, Dalian and Shenzhen from 82.9±3.03 to 315.6±6.50ng/g dry wt. for E2, and Shenzhen and Shanghai from 124.5±3.25 to 204.5±9.26ng/g dry wt. for EE2, respectively. These results demonstrate that concentrations of EDCs in mussels along the coastline of China are substantially higher than levels reported in mussels and seafood elsewhere. Despite high levels of EDCs and per capita seafood consumption in China, analysis indicated that 4-NP and BPA intake from mussels at polluted sites per se are still below the Tolerable Daily Intake (TDI). In contrast, the daily intake of E2 and EE2 (6.5 and 5.5μg/person/day, respectively) from mussel consumption exceeded the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) established by the WHO, USA and Australia by large margins, suggesting significant public health risks. A strong correlation was found between EDC concentrations in SPMDs and transplanted mussels, and the advantages of using mussels and SPMDs for monitoring EDCs in the aquatic environment are discussed.

Abstract
Wild mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) were selected as bioindicators of chemical pollution to evaluate the occurrence and spatial distribution of five endocrine disrupting compounds in the Spanish Atlantic coast and Bay of Biscay. A total of 24 samples were collected in May, 2011 and analysed by selective pressurized liquid extraction followed by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry determination. Branched alkylphenols (4-tert-octylphenol and nonylphenol) were determined in more than 90% of the analysed samples whereas the presence of linear alkylphenols (4-n-octylphenol and 4-n-nonylphenol) was scarcely detected (<12% of the samples). Wastewater treatment plants discharges and nautical, fishing and shipping activities were considered the primary sources of contamination by alkylphenols. Bisphenol A was found in 16% of the analysed samples associated to punctual industrial discharges. A total endocrine disrupting compound (alkylphenols and bisphenol A) average concentration of 604ngg(-1) dw was calculated and nonylphenol was the main contributor in almost all sampling points.

Abstract
A novel analytical method has been developed and validated for the quantification of alkyl phenols in aqueous and soil samples. Fabric phase sorptive extraction, a new sorptive microextraction technique, has been employed for the preconcentration of some endocrine-disruptor alkylphenol molecules, namely, 4-tert-butylphenol, 4-sec-butylphenol, 4-tert-amylphenol, and 4-cumylphenol, followed by high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection. Various parameters influencing the fabric phase sorptive extraction performance, namely, extraction time, eluting solvent, elution time and pH of the sample matrix, were optimized. The chromatographic separation was carried out with a mobile phase of acetonitrile/water (60:40 v/v) at an isocratic flow rate of 1.0 mL/min using a reversed-phase C18 column at λmax 225 nm. The calibration curves of target analytes were prepared in the concentration range 5-500 ng/mL with good coefficient of determination values (R2 > 0.992). Extraction efficiency values were 74.0, 75.6, 78.0, and 78.3 for 4-tert-butylphenol, 4-sec-butylphenol, 4-tert-amylphenol, and 4-cumylphenol, respectively. The limits of detection range from 0.161 to 0.192 ng/mL. Subsequently, the new fabric phase sorptive extraction with high-performance liquid chromatography and ultraviolet detection was successfully applied for the recovery of alkyl phenols from spiked ground water, river water, and treated water from a sewage treatment plant, and soil and sludge samples.

Abstract
A novel and green analytical methodology for the determination of alkylphenols (4-tert-octylphenol, 4-n-octylphenol, 4-n-nonylphenol, nonylphenol technical mixture) and bisphenol A in bivalve mollusc samples was developed and validated. The method was based on selective pressurized liquid extraction (SPLE) with a simultaneous in cell clean up combined with liquid chromatography–electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry in negative mode (LC–ESI-MS/MS). Quantitation was performed by standard addition curves in order to correct matrix effects. The analytical features of the method were satisfactory: relative recoveries varied between 80 and 107% and repeatability and intermediate precision were <20% for all compounds. Uncertainty assessment of measurement was estimated on the basis of an in-house validation according to EURACHEM/CITAC guide. Quantitation limits of the method (MQL) ranged between 0.34 (4-n-octylphenol) and 3.6 ng g(−1) dry weight (nonylphenol). The main advantages of the method are sensitivity, selectivity, automaticity, low volumes of solvents required and low sample analysis time (according with the principles of Green Chemistry). The method was applied to the analysis of mussel samples of Galicia coast (NW of Spain). Nonylphenol and 4-tert-octylphenol were measured in all samples at concentrations between 9.3 and 372 ng g(−1) dw. As an approach, the human daily intake of these compounds was estimated and no risk for human health was found.

Abstract
The cellular responses, biodegradation and bioaccumulation of four endocrine disrupting chemicals, including nonylphenols (NPs), bisphenol A (BPA), 17alpha-ethynylestradiol (EE2), and estradiol (E2), in the marine diatom Navicula incerta, were investigated through the 96-h exposure test. The 50% effective concentration (EC(50)) values in the algal growth inhibition test for NPs, BPA, EE2 and E2 were 0.20mgL(-1), 3.73mgL(-1), 3.21mgL(-1) and >10mgL(-1), respectively. With the increase of test concentrations, the cellular contents of polysaccharides and protein were reduced but the lipid content was increased, while the levels of chlorophyll a and total chlorophyll c were not affected by target EDCs. The activities of superoxidase dismutase and glutathione-S-transferase were stimulated by EDCs. The activities of peroxide dismutase were inhibited by NPs, BPA, and EE2, but were enhanced by E2. The bioaccumulation and biodegradation of target EDCs were inhibited with the increasing exposure concentrations. Nevertheless, the toxic and inhibitory effects of these EDCs on the diatom at their environmental relevant concentrations were relatively low. At the environmental relevant concentration (0.001mgL(-1)), 20.69% of NPs, 37.78% of BPA, 31.26% of EE2 and 52.26% of E2 were removed from the seawater in 96h via biodegradation, and the respective 96-h bioconcentration factor (BCF) values were 2077, 261, 470, and 39. These results showed that among the four target EDCs, NPs would be most problematic as reflecting by their low biodegradation and high BCF in the diatom, suggesting that the NPs would accumulate within the algal cell and pose threats to organisms at higher tropic levels, especially the larvae feeding on the diatom.

Abstract
To understand nonylphenol (NP) contamination in the northeast coastal environment in China, NP was determined in 19 sediment and 20 bivalve samples collected during November 2005. NP was identified in all sediment samples in the range of 8.8 to 1.0 x 10(3) ng/g dw (dry weight), with an average of 0.12 x 10(3) ng/g dw. Most of the bivalve samples (oysters and mussels) contained detectable amounts of NP that ranged from ND (not detected) to 7.6 x 10(3) ng/g dw, with an average value of 0.79 x 10(3) ng/g dw. These results indicated that NP is ubiquitous in sediments and bivalves from the northeast coast of China, and are even present in bivalves sold as seafood. Serious contamination with NP was recorded off the coast of Bohai Strait and in semi-enclosed coastal environment such as Jiaozhou Bay and Liaodong Bay. Possible environmental and human health implications were understood in this study.
