Abstract
Sample preparation is an essential process when handling complex matrices. Extraction without using a solvent requires the direct transfer of analytes from the sample to the adsorbent either in the gas or liquid phase. In this study, a wire coated with a new adsorbent was fabricated for in-needle microextraction (INME) as a solvent-free sample extraction method. The wire inserted into the needle was placed in the headspace (HS), which was saturated with volatile organic compounds from the sample in a vial. A new adsorbent was synthesized via electrochemical polymerization by mixing aniline with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in the presence of an ionic liquid (IL). The newly synthesized adsorbent using IL is expected to achieve high thermal stability, good solvation properties, and high extraction efficiency. The characteristics of the electrochemically synthesized surfaces coated with MWCNT-IL/polyaniline (PANI) adsorbents were characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Then, the proposed HS-INME-MWCNT-IL/PANI method was optimized and validated. Accuracy and precision were evaluated by analyzing replicates of a real sample containing phthalates, showing spike recovery between 61.13% and 108.21% and relative standard deviations lower than 15%. The limit of detection and limit of quantification of the proposed method were computed using the IUPAC definition as 15.84~50.56 μg and 52.79~168.5 μg, respectively. We concluded that HS-INME using a wire coated with the MWCNT-IL/PANI adsorbent could be repeatedly used up to 150 times without degrading its extraction performance in an aqueous solution; it constitutes an eco-friendly and cost-effective extraction method.

Abstract
Polyaniline (PANI) is one of the best known and widely studied conducting polymers with multiple applications and unique physicochemical properties. Due to its porous structure and relatively high surface area as well as the affinity toward many analytes related to the ability to establish different types of interactions, PANI has a great potential as a sorbent in sample pretreatment before instrumental analyses. This study provides an overview of the applications of polyaniline and polyaniline composites as sorbents in sample preparation techniques based on solid-phase extraction, including conventional solid-phase extraction (SPE) and its modifications, solid-phase microextraction (SPME), dispersive solid-phase extraction (dSPE), magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) and stir-bar sorptive extraction (SBSE). The utility of PANI-based sorbents in chromatography was also summarized. It has been shown that polyaniline is willingly combined with other components and PANI-based materials may be formed in a variety of shapes. Polyaniline alone and PANI-based composites were successfully applied for sample preparation before determination of various analytes, both metal ions and organic compounds, in different matrices such as environmental samples, food, human plasma, urine, and blood.

Abstract
It has been known for years that the phenolic compounds are able to exert harmful effects toward living organisms including humans due to their high toxicity. Living organisms were exposed to these phenolic compounds as they were released into the environment as waste products from several fast-growing industries. In this regard, tremendous efforts have been made by researchers to develop sensing methods for the detection of these phenolic compounds. Graphene and conducting polymers-based materials have arisen as a high potential sensing layer to improve the performance of the developed sensors. Henceforth, this paper reviews the existing investigations on graphene and conducting polymer-based materials incorporated with various sensors that aimed to detect hazardous phenolic compounds, i.e., phenol, 2-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, pentachlorophenol, 2-nitrophenol, 4-nitrophenol, 2,4-dinitrophenol, and 2,4-dimethylphenol. The whole picture and up-to-date information on the graphene and conducting polymers-based sensors are arranged in systematic chronological order to provide a clearer insight in this research area. The future perspectives of this study are also included, and the development of sensing methods for hazardous phenolic compounds using graphene and conducting polymers-based materials is expected to grow more in the future.

Abstract
In this work, electrospun polyacrylonitrile/reduced graphene oxide-amino-halloysite/bimetallic metal–organic framework (PAN/rGO-amino-HNT/Co0.5Zn0.5(MeIm)2) nanofiber film was synthesized and investigated as a novel adsorbent for the ultrasonic-assisted thin-film microextraction (UA-TFME) of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs), including palmitic methyl ester (PAME), oleic methyl ester (OAME), stearic methyl ester (SAME), and linoleic methyl ester (LAME), from dairy products. The hybrid nanocomposite was obtained via bonding halloysite nanotubes to reduced graphene oxide, followed by loading with bimetallic metal–organic frameworks. The determination of FAMEs with nanofiber film was performed in two stages of desorption and absorption where, initially, the analytes were adsorbed onto the nanofiber film and then desorbed with organic solvent. In this study, ultrasound was used for both the adsorption and desorption stages. The advantages of ultrasonication are extensive, overcoming the shortcomings of conventional techniques in terms of energy consumption and solvent use, allowing a shorter treatment time with a low cost of implementation. Based on PAN/rGO-amino-HNT/Co0.5Zn0.5(MeIm)2 thin film, a microextraction-gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (TFME-GC-FID) method was developed. Experimental parameters affecting the extraction and desorption steps were optimized. The desorption parameters, including desorption time and the properties of the desorption solvent, were investigated one factor at a time. Then, effective parameters in the adsorption step were optimized using a Box–Behnken design and Design-Expert 7 software. Under the optimal conditions, the method detection limits (S/N = 3) were in the range of 0.03–0.06 μg L−1 and the limits of quantification (S/N = 10) were within 0.11–0.23 μg L−1. The relative standard deviations for intra-day and inter-day precision were 2.4–4.7% and 2.6–3.4%, respectively. In the present work, the UA-TFME method was successfully applied for the quantification of fatty acid methyl esters in dairy products (milk, yogurt, cheese, yogurt soda and butter samples) for the first time. The fatty acids were transesterified using standard procedures and were subjected to UA-TFME treatment prior to GC-FID determination. The developed method possesses the advantages of simplicity, rapidity, cost-effectiveness, sensitivity, and non-invasiveness. Electrospun polyacrylonitrile/reduced graphene oxide-amino-halloysite/bimetallic metal–organic framework nanofiber film was synthesized and successfully applied to the ultrasonic-assisted thin-film microextraction (UA-TFME) of fatty acid methyl esters from dairy products.![]()

Abstract
The data presented in this particular study demonstrate that the biodegradation of phenol by Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is a dynamic bioenergetic process mainly affected by the production of catechol and the presence of a growth-promoting substrate in the culture medium. The study focused on the regulation of the bioenergetic equilibrium resulting from production of catechol after phenol oxidation. Catechol was identified by HPLC-UV and HPLC-ESI-MS/MS. Growth measurements revealed that phenol is a growth-limiting substrate for microalgal cultures. The Chlamydomonas cells proceed to phenol biodegradation because they require carbon reserves for maintenance of homeostasis. In the presence of acetic acid (a growth-promoting carbon source), the amount of catechol detected in the culture medium was negligible; apparently, acetic acid provides microalgae with sufficient energy reserves to further biodegrade catechol. It has been shown that when microalgae do not have sufficient energy reserves, a significant amount of catechol is released into the culture medium. Chlamydomonas reinhardtii acts as a versatile bioenergetic machine by regulating its metabolism under each particular set of growth conditions, in order to achieve an optimal balance between growth, homeostasis maintenance and biodegradation of phenol. The novel findings of this study reveal a paradigm showing how microalgal metabolic versatility can be used in the bioremediation of the environment and in potential large-scale applications.

Abstract
Chemicals pollution in the environment has attracted attention all over the world, and the toxicity prediction of chemical pollutants has become quite important. In this paper, we introduce a simple approach to predict the toxicity of some chemical components, in which the Tchebichef image moment (TM) method was employed to extract useful chemical information from the images of molecular structures to establish quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) prediction models. The proposed approach was applied to predict the toxicity of anilines and phenols for the aquatic organisms of P. subcapitata and V. fischeri, in which the obtained TMs were defined as the independent variables, while the biological toxicity (pEC50) was regarded to be the dependent variable. Then, the predictive models were established by stepwise regression, respectively. The obtained squared correlation coefficients of leave-one-out cross-validation (Q2) for training sets and the predictive squared correlation coefficients (Rp2) for test sets of the two groups of data were higher than 0.79 and 0.75, respectively, which indicated that the obtained models possessed satisfactory accuracy and reliability. Compared with several reported methods, the proposed approach was more convenient and has a higher predictive capability. Our study provides another perspective in QSAR research.

Abstract
Background:Designing an analytical methodology for complicated matrices, such as biological and environmental samples, is difficult since the sample preparation procedure is the most demanding step affecting the whole analytical process. Nowadays, this step has become more challenging by the legislations and environmental concerns since it is a prerequisite to eliminate or minimize the use of hazardous substances in traditional procedures by replacing with green techniques suitable for the sample matrix. Methods:In addition to the matrix, the nature of the analyte also influence the ease of creating green analytical techniques. Recent developments in the chemical analysis provide us new methodologies introducing microextraction techniques and among them, solid phase microextraction (SPME) has emerged as a simple, fast, low cost, reliable and portable sample preparation technique that minimizes solvent consumption. Results:The use of home-made fibers is popular in the last two decades since the selectivity can be tuned by changing the surface characteristics through chemical and electrochemical modifications. Latter technique is preferred since the electroactive polymers can be coated onto the fiber under controlled electrochemical conditions and the film thicknesses can be adjusted by simply changing the deposition parameters. Thermal resistance and mechanical strength can be readily increased by incorporating different dopant ions into the polymeric structure and selectivity can be tuned by inserting functional groups and nanostructures. A vast number of analytes with wide range of polarities extracted by this means can be determined with a suitable chromatographic detector coupled to the system. Therefore, the main task is to improve the physicochemical properties of the fiber along with the extraction efficiency and selectivity towards the various analytes by adjusting the electrochemical preparation conditions. Conclusion:This review covers the fine tuning conditions practiced in electrochemical preparation of SPME fibers and in-tube systems and their applications in environmental, food and clinical analysis.

Abstract
The application of identical exposure dosages in different species generally leads to a limited understanding of dose-response patterns because of species-specific factors. To evaluate phenol-induced ecotoxicity, antioxidant enzyme activity and population growth dynamics were compared in two model ciliates, the marine species Euplotes vannus and the freshwater species Paramecium multimicronucleatum. Dosage ranges of phenol exposure were based on tolerance limits of test ciliates as determined by their carrying capacity (K) and growth rate (r). When the exposure duration of phenol increased from 48 h to 96 h, the median effective dose (ED50) for P. multimicronucleatum decreased faster than that for E. vannus, and the ratio of the former to the latter declined from 2.75 to 0.30. When E. vannus was exposed to increasing concentrations of phenol (0-140 mg l-1), r rose initially and then dropped significantly at concentrations higher than 40 mg l-1, whereas K decreased linearly over the entire range. For P. multimicronucleatum, both r and K declined gradually over the range 0-200 mg l-1 phenol. Dose-response patterns of activities of three individual antioxidant enzymes, and the integrative index of the three enzymes, presented a biphasic (inverse U-shaped) curve at each of four durations of exposure, i.e. 12 h, 24 h, 36 h and 48 h. Cluster analyses and multidimensional scaling analyses of antioxidant enzyme activities revealed differences in the temporal succession of physiological states between the two model ciliates. In brief, combining ED50 with growth dynamic parameters is helpful for designing exposure dosages of toxicants in ecotoxicity tests.

Abstract
In order to realize the multi-analyte assays for physiological molecules and environmental contaminants, a bi-enzyme biosensor based on horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-catalyzed noradrenalin (NA) polymerization in the presence of H2O2 was fabricated for the first time and utilized in immobilizing HRP and glucose oxidase (GOx) simultaneously. The resultant bi-enzyme modified electrode was demonstrated to be efficient in monitoring multi-analyte (H2O2, Cr(III), glucose, and Cr(VI)). It was shown that the prepared PNA-HRP-GOx/Pt electrode exhibits a sensitivity (S) high up to 628.4 μA mM-1 cm-2 in the linear range (LR) of 0.50 μM ~ 0.42 mM and a S of 208.9 μA mM-1 cm-2 in the LR of 0.42 mM~3.5 mM in glucose sensing, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.08 μM observed; in Cr(VI) sensing a LOD of 0.20 nM and a LR of 0.50 ~ 6.0 nM were obtained. With the addition of polyaniline (PANI), the resultant PNA-HRP-GOx/PANI/Pt electrode potentiostated at - 0.20 V responded linearly to H2O2 concentration in 0.05 ~ 30.2 mM range, with linearly responses to Cr(III) concentration in the LR of 0.01 ~ 3.8 μM. Hence, amperometric biosensors with high S, low LOD and good anti-interference ability for detection of glucose, H2O2 and heavy metal ions (Cr(III) and Cr(VI)) were developed.

Abstract
A three-dimensional quantitative structure activity relationship (3D-QSAR) model is built by using a comparative molecular similarity indices analysis (CoMSIA) technique with an experimentally determined logarithm of bioconcentration factors (logBCFs) for 36 phenols in fish. Meanwhile, with the pentachlorophenol (PCP) molecule as target molecules, contributions of the molecular fields indicate that the electrostatic fields are the main influences on the bioconcentration of the PCP molecule. Based on the analytical results of CoMSIA contour map of PCP and PCP molecular docking with SOD protease (PDB ID: 4A7T), the R6 substituent positions of PCP were modified to give seven new modified PCP molecules with low bioconcentration in this paper. The energy barrier calculation of the new modified PCP molecular reaction pathways can infer the order of the substitution reaction s as -SCl > -CH2Cl > -COCl > -CCl3 > -CH=CH2 > -NO2 > -SH. These calculations, combined with anaerobic biodegradation, ecotoxic effect, and mobility of new modified PCP molecules, enable a new environmentally friendly compound when the Cl at the R6 position of PCP was replaced with -COCl substituent with low bioconcentration (reduced by 32.89%), ecotoxic effect basically unchanged (increased by 1.37%), anaerobic biodegradation increased (increased by 24.81%), and mobility basically unchanged (reduced by 0.94%) to be designed.

Abstract
Phenol, o-cresol, m-cresol, and p-cresol were selected to conduct microcosm experiments to examine their attenuation under simulated marine conditions, aiming at estimating natural attenuation and the contribution of oxidation, photolysis, biodegradation, and volatilisation to total attenuation of phenol and three cresols in the marine environment. The development of attenuation in microcosms showed the relevance of the pseudo-first-order kinetic for all phenols. The half-lives of phenol, o-cresol, m-cresol, and p-cresol attenuation under optimal conditions were 7.9, 4.3, 5.3, and 4.4 d, respectively. Attenuation kinetics was proposed to analyse the natural attenuation of phenol and cresols. The leading attenuation type of phenol, o-cresol, and p-cresol was volatilisation, and the attenuation rate constants (Kv) were 0.0356, 0.0687, and 0.0710 d-1. Photolysis (Kp: 0.0584 d-1) was the major attenuation type for m-cresol. Biodegradation of phenol (Kb: 0.0021 d-1) and m-cresol (Kb: 0.0049 d-1) were extremely inhibited. The rank between the contributions of the four types of attenuation to total attenuation differed between phenol and the three cresols. The attenuation kinetics proposed in this study possibly demonstrated the attenuation of the phenol and cresols in microcosm. This new reaction kinetics can be used in the analysis of natural attenuation of chemical substances.

Abstract
A novel catechol (CA) biosensor was developed by embedding tyrosinase (Tyr) onto in situ electrochemical reduction graphene (EGR) on choline-functionalized gold nanoparticle (AuNPs-Ch) film. The results of UV-Vis spectra indicated that Tyr retained its original structure in the film, and an electrochemical investigation of the biosensor showed a pair of well-defined, quasi-reversible redox peaks with Epa = -0.0744 V and Epc = -0.114 V (vs. SCE) in 0.1 M, pH 7.0 sodium phosphate-buffered saline at a scan rate of 100 mV/s. The transfer rate constant ks is 0.66 s-1. The Tyr-EGR/AuNPs-Ch showed a good electrochemical catalytic response for the reduction of CA, with the linear range from 0.2 to 270 μM and a detection limit of 0.1 μM (S/N = 3). The apparent Michaelis-Menten constant was estimated to be 109 μM.

Abstract
The toxic effects of phenol on four marine microalgae (Dunaliella salina, Platymonas subcordiformis, Phaeodactylum tricornutum Bohlin, and Skeletonema costatum) were evaluated. The 96h EC50 values were 72.29, 92.97, 27.32, and 27.32mgL-1, respectively, which were lower than those values of freshwater microalgae reported in the literature. During a 96-h exposure to a sub-lethal concentration of phenol (1/2 96h EC50) with green alga (D. salina) and diatom (S. costatum), reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, and chlorophyll a (Chl a) content decrease were simultaneously observed in diatom cells after 48h treatment. On the contrary, other chlorophylls in both algae were unaffected. Under transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the phenol-induced ultrastructure alterations included disappearance, or shrinkage, of nucleolus and enlargement of vacuoles, which may result in programmed cell death (PCD). The increase in number of lipid droplets may be related to phenol detoxification. These results indicate that the sensitivity of marine microalgae to phenol was dependent on some biotic factors such as cell size, ROS production, and phenol degradation ability in algal cells.

Abstract
A novel titanium and nickel oxide composite nanosheets (TiO2/NiOCNSs) coating was in situ grown on a Nitinol (NiTi) wire by direct hydrothermal treatment and modified by self-assembly of trichlorophenylsilane for solid phase microextraction (SPME). TiO2/NiOCNSs were radially oriented and chemically bonded to the NiTi substrate with double-faced open access sites. Moreover the phenyl modified TiO2/NiOCNSs (TiO2/NiOCNSs-Ph) coating exhibited original surface supporting framework favorable for effective SPME. The extraction performance of TiO2/NiOCNSs-Ph coated NiTi (NiTi-TiO2/NiOCNSs-Ph) fiber was investigated for the concentration and detection of ultraviolet (UV) filters, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phthalate acid esters and polychlorinated biphenyls coupled to HPLC with UV detection. The novel fiber exhibited better selectivity for UV filters and PAHs and presented greater extraction capability compared to commercial polydimethylsiloxane and polyacrylate fibers. Under the optimized conditions for SPME of UV filters, the proposed method presented linear ranges from 0.1 to 300μg/L with correlation coefficients of higher than 0.999 and limits of detection from 0.030μg/L to 0.064μg/L. Relative standard deviations (RSDs) were below 7.16% and 8.42% for intra-day and inter-day measurements with the single fiber, respectively. Furthermore RSDs for fiber-to-fiber reproducibility from 6.57% to 8.93% were achieved. The NiTi-TiO2/NiOCNSs-Ph fiber can be used up to 200 times. The proposed method was successfully applied to the preconcentration and determination of trace target UV filters in different environmental water samples. The relative recoveries from 87.3% to 104% were obtained with RSDs less than 8.7%.

Abstract
The present work reports the electrochemical fabrication of an ionic liquid functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes-polyaniline (MWCNT@IL/PANI) nanocomposite coating and its application in the headspace-solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography (GC) determination of benzoic acid esters (i.e., methyl benzoate, ethyl benzoate, propyl benzoate and butyl benzoate). The MWCNTs was firstly functionalized with amine-terminated IL (MWCNT@IL) through chemical reduction, and then was doped in PANI during the electropolymerization of aniline. The resulting coating was characterized by infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy and thermo gravimetry. It showed net-like structure and had high thermal stability (up to 330°C). Furthermore, it presented high selectivity for the four benzoic acid esters and thus suited for their HS-SPME-GC determination. Results showed that under optimized extraction conditions, the detection limits were less than 6.1ngL(-1) (S/N=3) and the linear detection ranges were 0.012-50μgL(-1) (R≥0.9957) for these analytes. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) were lower than 6.4% for five successive measurements with one fiber, and the RSDs for fiber-to-fiber were 4.4-9.6% (n=5). The developed method was successfully applied to the determination of these benzoic acid esters in perfume samples.

Fabrication and application of zinc-zinc oxide nanosheets coating on an etched stainless steel wire as a selective solid-phase microextraction fiber. J Chromatogr A 2015; 1384:28-36. [PMID: 25662065 DOI: 10.1016/j.chroma.2015.01.059] [Citation(s) in RCA: 35] [Impact Index Per Article: 3.9] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/24/2014] [Revised: 01/20/2015] [Accepted: 01/20/2015] [Indexed: 01/25/2023]
Abstract
A novel zinc-zinc oxide (Zn-ZnO) nanosheets coating was directly fabricated on an etched stainless steel wire substrate as solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber via previous electrodeposition of robust Zn coating. The scanning electron micrograph of the Zn-ZnO nanosheets coated fiber exhibits a flower-like nanostructure with high surface area. The SPME performance of as-fabricated fiber was investigated for the concentration and determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, phthalates and ultraviolet (UV) filters coupled to high performance liquid chromatography with UV detection (HPLC-UV). It was found that the Zn-ZnO nanosheets coating exhibited high extraction capability, good selectivity and rapid mass transfer for some UV filters. The main parameters affecting extraction performance were investigated and optimized. Under the optimized conditions, the calibration graphs were linear over the range of 0.1-200μgL(-1). The limits of detection of the proposed method were 0.052-0.084μgL(-1) (S/N=3). The single fiber repeatability varied from 5.18% to 7.56% and the fiber-to-fiber reproducibility ranged from 6.74% to 8.83% for the extraction of spiked water with 50μgL(-1) UV filters (n=5). The established SPME-HPLC-UV method was successfully applied to the selective concentration and sensitive determination of target UV filters from real environmental water samples with recoveries from 85.8% to 105% at the spiking level of 10μgL(-1) and 30μgL(-1). The relative standard deviations were below 9.7%.

Abstract
A headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) technique using stainless steel fiber coated with 20 μm multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and gas chromatography with thermionic specific detector (GC-TSD) was developed to determine organophosphorous pesticides (OPPs) in soil. Parameters affecting the extraction efficiency such as extraction time and temperature, ionic strength, the volume of water added to the soil, sample solution volume to headspace volume ratio, desorption time, and desorption temperature were investigated and optimized. Compared to commercial polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS, 7 μm) fiber, the PDMS fiber was better to be corrected as phorate, whereas the MWCNTs fiber gave slightly better results for methyl parathion, chlorpyrifos and parathion. The optimized SPME method was applied to analyze OPPs in spiked soil samples. The limits of detection (LODs, S/N = 3) for the four pesticides were <0.216 ng g(-1), and their calibration curves were all linear (r (2) ≥ 0.9908) in the range from 1 to 200 ng g(-1). The precision (RSD, n = 6) for peak areas was 6.5 %-8.8 %. The recovery of the OPPs spiked real soil samples at 50 and 150 ng g(-1) ranged from 89.7 % to 102.9 % and 94.3 % to 118.1 %, respectively.
