Investigation of enantiomer recognition of molecularly imprinted polymeric monoliths in pressurized capillary electrochromatography screening the amino acids and their derivatives

Design of molecularly imprinted resin material with sulfonic acid functionalization for enantioseparation of (±)-cathine

In the current work, an enantioselective imprinting technique was used to develop a very selective adsorbent for the (+)-cathine ((+)-Cat) enantiomer. The phenolic sulfonamide produced from 2,4-dihydroxybenzenesulfonic acid (HBS) and (+)-Cat ((+)-Cat-HBS) was initially synthesized by triphenylphosphene activation and subsequently involved in condensation polymerization with resorcinol in the presence of formaldehyde under acidic conditions. Alkaline sulfonamide bond-breaking was subsequently employed to separate the (+)-Cat template from the polymer, and the resulting imprinted resin ((+)-CIP) displayed high selectivity for the (+)-Cat, with a capacity of 225 ± 2 mg/g. Studies of selectivity also showed that the (+)-Cat enantiomer was preferred over its counterpart because of the development of configurationally matching receptors. In addition, the produced resin was used for the enantioresolution of (±)-Cat racemate by column method, yielding a loading supernatant solution with an enantiomeric excess of (+)-Cat 50% and a recovery eluant solution with an excess of (-)-Cat 85%.

Simultaneous determination of 16 important biologically active phytohormones in Dendrobium huoshanese by pressurized capillary electrochromatography

A rapid pressurized capillary electrochromatography (pCEC) method has been successfully developed for the simultaneous determination of 16 phytohormones in Dendrobium huoshanense. Effects of wavelength, mobile phase, the flow rate, pH value, concentration of buffer and applied voltage were investigated, respectively. The results showed that the 16 phytohormones could be baseline-separated rapidly in less than 21 min on a reversed-phase EP-100-20/45-3-C18 capillary column (total length of 45 cm, effective length of 20 cm, diameter of 100 μm, ODS packing inside for 3 μm) with ACN/5.0 mM ammonium acetate (containing 0.05% formic acid, pH = 3) as the mobile phase using gradient elution mode as follows: 0.1-10.0 min 40%ACN,10-15.0 min 70%ACN, 15.0-20 min 80% ACN, 20-21.0 min 80% ACN at a flow rate of 0.12 mL/min, applied voltage of -5 kV and a UV detection wavelength of 210 nm. The method validation howed that the established method is precise and stability, and the RSDs of intra- and inter-day precision based retention time and peak area were all below 5%. Employed the established method, in our experimental conditions, total 6 endogenous hormones including IAA, IBA, NAA, GA, ABA, t-Z were detected in D. huoshense. However, a relative larger amount of exogenous hormone 2,4-D (25.3 ~ 4.2 μg/kg) and 6-BA (79.5 ~ 35.4 μg/kg) were detected in 1 ~ 4 year old cultivated D. huoshense, suggesting there were still a certain amount of exogenous hormone residue in tissue-cultured D. huoshanese though they had been transplanted to field cultivation from the test-tube plantlets for several years.

Preparation of imprinted cryogel cartridge for chiral separation of l-phenylalanine

l-Phe-imprinted cryogel cartridge was prepared for the chiral separation of l-Phe. N-Methacryloyl l-phenylalanine (MAPA) was used as a functional monomer for complexing with l-Phe. The selectivity of the membranes was investigated by using d-Phe, l-Trp, and d-Trp as competitor molecules. The PHEMAPA-l-Trp membranes were 6.4, 4.3, and 5.5 times more selective for l-Phe than d-Phe, l-Trp, and d-Trp, respectively. The PHEMAPA-l-Phe cryogel cartridge was incorporated into the fast protein liquid chromatography (FPLC) equipment and was able to separate D,l-Phe racemic mixture efficiently. The PHEMAPA-l-Phe membranes were shown to be reusable many times without significant loss of the adsorption capacity.

Current trends in the development of molecularly imprinted polymers in CEC

This review focused on the developments in the field of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) for CEC since 2009. New preparation techniques of MIP-based CEC, such as, portable microchip with macroporous monolithic imprinted microchannel, and low cross-linking MIPs based on liquid crystalline monomers, were discussed. Using selected cases rather than a comprehensive review of the entire field, our goal is to highlight the studies of the interest with an emphasis on recent work, and offers suggestions for future development in the field of imprinted materials for CEC separation.

Molecular imprinting science and technology: a survey of the literature for the years 2004-2011

Herein, we present a survey of the literature covering the development of molecular imprinting science and technology over the years 2004-2011. In total, 3779 references to the original papers, reviews, edited volumes and monographs from this period are included, along with recently identified uncited materials from prior to 2004, which were omitted in the first instalment of this series covering the years 1930-2003. In the presentation of the assembled references, a section presenting reviews and monographs covering the area is followed by sections describing fundamental aspects of molecular imprinting including the development of novel polymer formats. Thereafter, literature describing efforts to apply these polymeric materials to a range of application areas is presented. Current trends and areas of rapid development are discussed.

Chiral selectors in CE: recent developments and applications

This review article provides an overview of the recent advances in enantioanalysis by use of electrophoretic techniques. Due to the big number of publications in the subject mentioned above, this article is focused on chiral method developments and applications published from 2008 until 2011, and it demonstrates chiral selectors used in CE. Numerous chiral selectors have been used over the years, and these include the cyclic and the linear oligo- and polysaccharides, the branched polysaccharides, the polymeric and monomeric surfactants, the macrocyclic and other antibiotics, and the crown ethers. Different dual-selector systems are also presented in this article, and the results are compared with those obtained by use of a single chiral selector. Finally, several pharmaceutical and biomedical applications based on chiral recognition are summarized.

Recent advances in amino acid analysis by capillary electrophoresis

This paper describes the most important articles that have been published on amino acid analysis using CE during the period from June 2009 to May 2011 and follows the format of the previous articles of Smith (Electrophoresis 1999, 20, 3078-3083), Prata et al. (Electrophoresis 2001, 22, 4129-4138) and Poinsot et al. (Electrophoresis 2003, 24, 4047-4062; Electrophoresis 2006, 27, 176-194; Electrophoresis 2008, 29, 207-223; Electrophoresis 2010, 31, 105-121). We present new developments in amino acid analysis with CE, which are reported describing the use of lasers or light emitting diodes for fluorescence detection, conductimetry electrochemiluminescence detectors, mass spectrometry applications, and lab-on-a-chip applications using CE. In addition, we describe articles concerning clinical studies and neurochemical applications of these techniques.

Enantioselective capillary electrochromatography: recent developments and new trends

Since its development in the early 1970s, CEC has been studied quite extensively, but unfortunately its use is still mostly located at an academic level. Reasons for this are the limited availability of commercially available stationary phases (SPs) and columns, along with some practical limitations, such as column fragility, lack of column robustness and reproducibility. Nevertheless, CEC maintains a place among the separation techniques, probably because of its unique feature to combine two separation principles. Also in the field of chiral separations, CEC is often used as a separation technique and already showed its potential for this kind of analyses. This overview will focus on the recent applications, i.e. between 2006 and 2010, in enantioselective analysis by means of CEC. For the selected applications, the used SPs (chiral selectors) and their potential for future method development or screening purposes will be evaluated and critically discussed.

Recent advances of enantioseparations in capillary electrophoresis and capillary electrochromatography

A comprehensive survey of recent developments and applications of capillary electromigration techniques for enantioseparations from January 2006 to June 2010 is presented. The techniques include capillary electrophoresis, chip capillary electrophoresis and capillary electrochromatography. The separation principles and the chiral recognition mechanisms are discussed. Additionally, on-line preconcentrations in chiral capillary electrophoresis are also reviewed.

Chiral CE-MS

This review article addresses the developments and applications of capillary electromigration methods coupled on-line with MS for chiral analysis. The multiple enantiomeric applications of this hyphenated technology are covered including chiral analysis of drugs, food compounds, pesticides, natural metabolites, etc. in different matrices such as plasma, urine, medicines, foods, etc. This work intends to provide an updated overview (including works published till September 2009) on the principal chiral applications carried out by CZE-MS, CEC-MS and MEKC-MS, discussing their main advantages and drawbacks in all their different areas of application as well as their foreseeable development in the not too distant future.
