Abstract
Antibiotics in aquatic environments raise health concerns. Therefore, the rapid, on-site, and accurate detection of antibiotic residues is crucial for protecting the environment and human health. Herein, a dumbbell-shaped iron (Fe3+)-dopamine coordination nanozyme (Fe-DCzyme) was developed via an iron-driven self-assembly strategy. It exhibited excellent peroxidase-like activity, which can be quenched by adding l-cysteine to prevent Fe3+/Fe2+ electron transfer but restored by adding norfloxacin. Given the 'On-Off-On' effect of peroxidase-like activity, Fe-DCzyme was used as a colourimetric sensor for norfloxacin detection, and showed a wide linear range from 0.05 to 6.00 μM (R2 = 0.9950) and LOD of 27.0 nM. A portable smartphone-assisted detection platform using Fe-DCzyme was also designed to convert norfloxacin-induced color changes into RGB values as well as to realise the rapid, on-site and quantitative detection of norfloxacin. A good linear relation (0.10-6.00 μM) and high sensitivity (LOD = 79.3 nM) were achieved for the smartphone-assisted Fe-DCzyme detection platform. Its application was verified using norfloxacin spiking methods with satisfactory recoveries (92.66%-119.65%). Therefore, the portable smartphone-assisted Fe-DCzyme detection platform with low cost and easy operation can be used for the rapid, on-site and visual quantitative detection of antibiotic residues in water samples.

Abstract
A green, fast, and efficient pH-induced natural deep eutectic solvent combined with vortex-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction method (pH-NADES-VA-DLLME) followed by HPLC was established for determination of ofloxacin (OFL), ciprofloxacin (CIP) and enrofloxacin (ENR) in honey. In this method, NaOH, as an emulsifier, can increase the contact area between the NADES and the sample solution, which can efficiently improve the extraction efficiency of the analytes. Moreover, HCl acts as the phase separation agent without centrifugation in the process, which can greatly enhance the efficiency of the sample analysis process. In addition, the main factors affecting the extraction effect were optimized by single factor experiments. Under the optimal conditions, the limits of detection (LODs), the limits of quantification (LOQs) and recoveries were in the range of 0.004-0.015 μg mL-1, 0.012-0.050 μg mL-1, and 98.0-112.5%, respectively. The RSD values of intra-day and inter-day precisions were no more than 5.5% and 6.0%, respectively. The developed method was successfully applied to determine the three quinolone antibiotics in honey.

Abstract
Among many nanomaterials, electrospun carbon nanofibers (CNFs) have become one of the hot spots in nanoscience research because of their interesting physicochemical and biological properties such as large specific surface area, easy functionalization and biocompatibility. Polyacrylonitrile(PAN) has also become the most widely used precursor fiber for CNF manufacturing. In this paper, the latest advances in the synthesis of CNF by electrospinning were reviewed, including using template method, heat treatment, coaxial spinning technology to control the morphology and aperture, as well as the functionalization of electrospinning doped with chemical substances such as heteroatoms, nanoparticles (NPs), carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and grapheme (Gr), in order to further expand its application scope. The application of electrospun CNFs as electrochemical sensing platform for toxic and harmful substances in food and environment was also briefly introduced.

Abstract
In this work, β-cyclodextrin porous polymers (P-CDPs) functionalized novel covalent organic frameworks (P-CDPs/COFs) were synthesized by a simple and facile method. After combined with Pd2+ via electrostatic interaction, the Pd2+@P-CDPs/COFs nanocomposites were prepared and utilized as novel electrode materials to fabricate the non-enzyme electrochemical sensors for high-sensitivity detection of Norfloxacin (NF). Due to the host-guest recognition, excellent adsorption performance and catalytic performance of Pd2+@P-CDPs/COFs, the prepared sensor exhibited excellent electrochemical performance for detecting NF under the optimum conditions, which showed two linear ranges of 0.08-7.0 μM and 7.0-100.0 μM with a low detection limit of 0.031 μM (S/N = 3). Additionally, the obtained sensor has also been successfully applied to measure NF with satisfactory results in the real medicinal samples of NF eye-drops. Our findings paved the way for the development of COFs-based sensing platform in drug analysis and testing for human health, food security and the quality control of drugs.

Abstract
The widespread use of quinolones in humans and animals has become a major threat to public health. In this study, a simple, rapid, sensitive, and high throughput method based on automatic solid-phase extraction and isotope dilution ultra-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry was described for the determination of trace quinolones in environmental water. The proposed automated solid-phase extraction method was initially optimized, and the optimum experimental conditions found were 1 L water sample with 0.5 g/L Na2EDTA (pH 3) extracted and enriched by CNW Poly-Sery HLB cartridge at a flow rate of 50 mL/min and eluted by 8 mL of methanol. The linearity of the method ranged from 0.05 to 100 μg/L for 15 quinolones, with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.9993 to 0.9999. The limits of detection were in the low ng/L level, ranging from 0.005 to 0.051 ng/L. Finally, the optimized method was applied for determining trace levels of 15 quinolones in Wahaha pure water, tap water, river water, and seawater samples with good recoveries of 93 %-119 % and satisfactory relative standard deviations of 0.1 %-13.9 %. Fourteen quinolones were detected, and ofloxacin was the predominant congener in river water and seawater.

Electroosmotic flow modulation for improved electrokinetic preconcentration: Application to capillary electrophoresis of fluorescent magnetic nanoparticles. Anal Chim Acta 2021; 1161:338466. Abstract
It is reported in this study a new approach for modulation and even suppression of the electroosmotic flow (EOF) to achieve better electrokinetic preconcentration in capillary electrophoresis. This is based on the augmentation of the buffer's concentrations to very high levels (more than a thousand of mM) without recourse to any dynamic/permanent coating nor viscous gel. The use of large weakly charged molecules as background electrolyte's constituents allows working at extreme concentration ranges without penalty of high electric currents and Joule heating. By this way, the electroosmotic mobility could be modulated over a wide range (2-60 × 10-5 cm2 V-1 s-1 under alkaline conditions), and suppressed to levels equivalent to those obtained with several neutral coatings. The highest buffer concentrations, and the lowest EOF magnitudes, accordingly, were achieved with diethanolamine/3-(Cyclohexylamino)-1-propanesulfonic acid (ionic strength (IS) of 250 mM, pH 9.5), Tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (Tris)/2-(Cyclohexylamino)ethanesulfonic acid (CHES) (IS of 280 mM, pH 8.7) and triethanolamine/2-(Cyclohexylamino)ethanesulfonic acid (IS of 250 mM, pH 8.5). For demonstration, this new approach was applied for sensitive determination of core-shell magnetic nanoparticles (CSMNPs) having high potential for healthcare applications such as imaging agents for diagnostics and controllable cargos for nanomedicine. Different profiles were achieved for purpose-made and commercial magnetic nanoparticles using CE coupled with light-emitting-diode induced fluorescence (LEDIF) detection. The best performance for EOF-assisted preconcentration and CE-LEDIF of CSMNPs was achieved with these nanoparticles prepared in TRIS/CHES (IS 10 mM, pH 8.4) for preconcentration, and separation under BGE of TRIS/CHES (IS 100 mM, pH 8.4). Compared to the conventional capillary electrophoresis (CE-UV) method for characterization of magnetic nanoparticles, our proposed approach with fluorescent detection and EOF-assisted preconcentration offers almost 350-fold sensitivity improvement. Furthermore, our scheme can be used for monitoring the interaction between CSMNPs and target pharmaceutical molecules, serving for drug delivery development. A preliminary study with two antibiotics using this approach revealed that kanamycin interacts better with the target nanoparticles than amikacin.

Abstract
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are useful for extracting chemical compounds due to their properties, such as surface area and the potential for chemical modification. Especially the formation of CNTs with carboxylic acid functional group makes them disperse in water-based samples and have strong interaction forces with cationizable analytes. Based on these features, carboxylic acid functionalized multi-walled CNTs (COOH-MWCNTs) have been used as extraction sorbents. CNT can also be gathered using an external magnet by forming complex with iron oxide (Fe3O4) magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). In this study, COOH-MWCNTs with MNPs were subjected to magnetic solid-phase extraction (mSPE) in order to extract the targeted substances such as diphenhydramine, doxylamine, tramadol, escitalopram, zolpidem, diphenamid, paclobutrazol, hexaconazole, cyproconazole and mepronil from human plasma samples. The following five factors were optimized: (i) the ratio of COOH-MWCNTs to MNPs as a sorbent from 1:1 to 1:4; (ii) sorbent amount starting from 12.5 to 75%; (iii) sample pH tested pH 2 to pH 10 with 1 N hydrochloride and 1 N sodium hydroxide; (iv) agitating time from 0 to 4 min and (v) elution solvent. Limit of detection of 10 targeted substances in human plasma were in the range of 0.1-0.4 mg/L. The recovery of targeted substances (except diphenamid) in human plasma was 73.06-110.28% for intra-day and 83.00-107.70% for inter-day and the precision (relative standard deviation, %) in human plasma was 0.3-13.3% for intra-day and 2.9-15.6% for inter-day. The method was applied to nine authentic biological samples from overdose patients in the emergency room of Chungnam National University Hospital. The performance of mSPE was compared with the liquid-liquid extraction method using ethyl acetate. The results showed that the newly developed method in this study can be used for screening analysis in forensic and clinical toxicology.

Abstract
Recent years showed a boost in knowledge about the presence and fate of micropollutants in the environment. Instrumental and methodological developments mainly in liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry hold a large share in this success story. These techniques soon complemented gas chromatography and enabled the analysis of more polar compounds including pesticides but also household chemicals, food additives, and pharmaceuticals often present as traces in surface waters. In parallel, sample preparation techniques evolved to extract and enrich these compounds from biota and water samples. This review article looks at very polar and ionic compounds using the criterion log P ≤ 1. Considering about 240 compounds, we show that (simulated) log D values are often even lower than the corresponding log P values due to ionization of the compounds at our reference pH of 7.4. High polarity and charge are still challenging characteristics in the analysis of micropollutants and these compounds are hardly covered in current monitoring strategies of water samples. The situation is even more challenging in biota analysis given the large number of matrix constituents with similar properties. Currently, a large number of sample preparation and separation approaches are developed to meet the challenges of the analysis of very polar and ionic compounds. In addition to reviewing them, we discuss some trends: for sample preparation, preconcentration and purification efforts by SPE will continue, possibly using upcoming mixed-mode stationary phases and mixed beds in order to increase comprehensiveness in monitoring applications. For biota analysis, miniaturization and parallelization are aspects of future research. For ionic or ionizable compounds, we see electromembrane extraction as a method of choice with a high potential to increase throughput by automation. For separation, predominantly coupled to mass spectrometry, hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography applications will increase as the polarity range ideally complements reversed phase liquid chromatography, and instrumentation and expertise are available in most laboratories. Two-dimensional applications have not yet reached maturity in liquid-phase separations to be applied in higher throughput. Possibly, the development and commercial availability of mixed-mode stationary phases make 2D applications obsolete in semi-targeted applications. An interesting alternative will enter routine analysis soon: supercritical fluid chromatography demonstrated an impressive analyte coverage but also the possibility to tailor selectivity for targeted approaches. For ionic and ionizable micropollutants, ion chromatography and capillary electrophoresis are amenable but may be used only for specialized applications such as the analysis of halogenated acids when aspects like desalting and preconcentration are solved and the key advantages are fully elaborated by further research. Abstract
Cyclodestrins (CDs) are cyclic oligosaccharides well-known for their ability to form host-guest inclusion complexes with properly sized compounds. They have been used for decades as chiral selectors as well as drug delivery systems within the frameworks of separation science and pharmaceutical science. More recently, their use has been extended to the field of extractive science under the stimulus of additional advantageous characteristics, such as low-price, negligible environmental impact, non-toxicity, as arising from the fact that natural CDs are starch degradation products. To abate their solubility in water and generate novel sorbents for solid phase extraction, the following approaches have been employed: (i) immobilization onto inert materials (silica, attapulgite, etc.); (ii) immobilization onto nanomaterials (magnetic nanoparticles, titanium oxide, carbon nanotubes, graphene oxide, etc.); (iii) polymerisation with specific cross-linkers to form the so-called CD-based nanosponges. Particularly promising are these last ones for their selectivity, mesoporous structure, insolubility in aqueous media and good dispersibility. This review offers a concise overview on the state of art and future prospects of CDs in this important sector of the analytical chemistry, offering a critical perspective of the most significant applications.

Abstract
We developed a QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe) method for the high through-put determination of 28 common veterinary antibiotics in swine wastewater using one-step dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE) for sample cleanup and ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry for detection. The orthogonal test method was used to systematically investigate the parameters that might influence d-SPE efficiency. The optimal d-SPE procedure utilized 40 mg primary secondary amine sorbent and 3 g L-1 Na2EDTA. The recoveries ranged from 50 to 100% with relative standard deviations <20% for all target analytes except for enrofloxacin and chlortetracycline. The limits of detection and limits of quantification for all the analytes ranged from 0.002 to 0.200 ng mL-1 and 0.005-0.500 ng mL-1, respectively. The developed method was successfully applied to the analysis of 28 antibiotic residues in swine wastewater from 10 pig farms located in central China. Fourteen antibiotics including 4 sulfonamides (sulfadiazine, sulfamerazine, sulfamonomethoxine and trimethoprim), 5 fluoroquinolones (norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, pefloxacin, enrofloxacin, and ofloxacin), 1 lincosamide (lincomycin) and 4 tetracyclines (doxycycline, tetracycline, oxytetracycline, and chlortetracycline) were detected at levels ranging from 0.0560 to 1793 ng mL-1. Our results demonstrated that the optimized method is a simple but reliable analytical technique for the routine monitoring of veterinary antibiotics in swine wastewater. Swine wastewater samples that we analyzed from 10 pig farms in Jiangxi Province, China were highly contaminated and pose a serious threat to ecosystems and to public health.

Abstract
In this study, we report the dual detection of kanamycin (KMY) and oxytetracycline (OTC) using metal polydopamine frameworks (MPDA) for the first time. This sensing system employed metal polydopamine frameworks (MPDA), which acted as a fluorescence quencher in the interaction between MPDA and dye-labeled DNA molecules; the metal polydopamine frameworks exhibited an excellent fluorescence quenching behaviour and good analytical response towards the detection of the biomolecules KMY and OTC. The accumulated kanamycin and oxytetracycline in the sensing system were recovered, and changes in their fluorescence intensity were monitored at 525 and 583 nm. Under the optimal conditions, the proposed sensing system remarkably achieved highly sensitive and selective detection of KMY and OTC with the limit of detection of 304 pM and 481 pM, respectively. In addition, the selectivity of the developed sensor was explored in the presence of competitive biomolecules. Moreover, this sensing system demonstrated great potential and versatility for the rapid detection of molecules. In addition, this biosensor was successfully evaluated for the dual detection of KMY and OTC in different real samples.

Abstract
In this study, a magnetic molecular sieve material (Fe3O4@MCM-48) was synthesized by a combination of solvothermal and self-assembly methods. The physicochemical properties of the magnetic molecular sieve material were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, magnetic hysteresis loop measurements, transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption-desorption analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The as-synthesized nanocomposite showed various advantages, including easy magnetic-assisted separation, high specific surface area, and a highly interwoven and branched mesoporous structure. The Fe3O4@MCM-48 nanocomposite was then used as an effective adsorbent material for magnetic solid-phase extraction of fluoroquinolones (FQs) from water samples. The FQs in the extract were determined via liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Adsorption and desorption factors that affected the extraction performance were systematically optimized using spiked purified water samples. Good linearity (with R2 > 0.99) was shown by this FQ detection system for FQ concentrations from 5 to 1000 ng L-1. Moreover, low detection limits (0.7-6.0 ng L-1) and quantitation limits (2.5-20.0 ng L-1) and satisfactory repeatability (relative standard deviation < 10%, n = 6) were achieved for water samples. The developed method was also validated for the analysis of FQs in meat and milk samples. Finally, FQs in food and drinking water samples were successfully determined using the developed method. Abstract
Solid-phase extraction in combination with large-volume sample stacking-capillary electrophoresis (SPE-LVSS-CE) was applied to measure chlortetracycline, doxycycline, oxytetracycline, and tetracycline in milk samples. Under optimal conditions, the proposed method had a linear range of 29 to 200 µg·L-1, with limits of detection ranging from 18.6 to 23.8 µg·L-1 with inter- and intraday repeatabilities < 10% (as a relative standard deviation) in all cases. The enrichment factors obtained were from 50.33 to 70.85 for all the TCs compared with a conventional capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE). This method is adequate to analyze tetracyclines below the most restrictive established maximum residue limits. The proposed method was employed in the analysis of 15 milk samples from different brands. Two of the tested samples were positive for the presence of oxytetracycline with concentrations of 95 and 126 µg·L-1. SPE-LVSS-CE is a robust, easy, and efficient strategy for online preconcentration of tetracycline residues in complex matrices.

Abstract
To achieve analytical success, it is necessary to develop thorough clean-up procedures to extract analytes from the matrix. Dispersive solid phase extraction (DSPE) has been used as a pretreatment technique for the analysis of several compounds. This technique is based on the dispersion of a solid sorbent in liquid samples in the extraction isolation and clean-up of different analytes from complex matrices. DSPE has found a wide range of applications in several fields, and it is considered to be a selective, robust, and versatile technique. The applications of dispersive techniques in the analysis of veterinary drugs in different matrices involve magnetic sorbents, molecularly imprinted polymers, carbon-based nanomaterials, and the Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe (QuEChERS) method. Techniques based on DSPE permit minimization of additional steps such as precipitation, centrifugation, and filtration, which decreases the manipulation of the sample. In this review, we describe the main procedures used for synthesis, characterization, and application of this pretreatment technique and how it has been applied to food analysis.

Abstract
In this paper, pristine and chemically treated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were employed as solid-phase extraction sorbents for the isolation and enrichment of multi-class pharmaceuticals from the surface water and groundwater, prior to liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis. Thirteen pharmaceuticals that belong to different therapeutical classes (erythromycin, azithromycin, sulfamethoxazole, diazepam, lorazepam, carbamazepine, metoprolol, bisoprolol, enalapril, cilazapril, simvastatin, clopidogrel, diclofenac) and two metabolites of metamizole (4-acetylaminoantipyrine and 4-formylaminoantipyrine) were selected for this study. The influence of chemical treatment on MWCNT surface characteristics and extraction efficiency was studied, and it was shown that HCl treatment of MWCNT leads to a decrease in the amount of surface oxygen groups and at the same time favorably affects the efficiency toward extraction of selected pharmaceuticals. After the optimization of the SPE procedure, the following conditions were chosen: 50 mg of HCl-treated MCWNT as a sorbent, 100 mL of water sample at pH 6, and 15 mL of the methanol-dichloromethane mixture (1:1, v/v) as eluent. Under optimal conditions, high recoveries (79-119%), as well as low detection (0.2 to 103 ng L-1) and quantitation (0.5-345 ng L-1) limits, were obtained. The optimized method was applied to the analysis of five surface water and two groundwater samples, and three pharmaceuticals were detected, the antiepileptic drug carbamazepine and two metabolites of antipyretic metamizole.

Abstract
Widespread use of antibiotics has led to pollution of waterways, potentially creating resistance among freshwater bacterial communities. Microorganisms resistant to commonly prescribed antibiotics (superbug) have dramatically increased over the last decades. The presence of antibiotics in waters, in food and beverages in both their un-metabolized and metabolized forms are of interest for humans. This is due to daily exposure in small quantities, that, when accumulated, could lead to development of drug resistance to antibiotics, or multiply the risk of allergic reaction. Conventional analytical methods used to quantify antibiotics are relatively expensive and generally require long analysis time associated with the difficulties to perform field analyses. In this context, electrochemical and optical based sensing devices are of interest, offering great potentials for a broad range of analytical applications. This review will focus on the application of magnetic nanoparticles in the design of different analytical methods, mainly sensors, used for the detection of antibiotics in different matrices (human fluids, the environmental, food and beverages samples).

Abstract
Sample preparation is a key step for qualitative and quantitative analysis of trace analytes in complicated matrix. Along with the rapid development of nanotechnology in material science, numerous nanomaterials have been developed with particularly useful applications in analytical chemistry. Benefitting from their high specific areas, increased surface activities, and unprecedented physical/chemical properties, the potentials of nanomaterials for rapid and efficient sample preparation have been exploited extensively. In this review, recent progress of novel nanomaterials applied in sample preparation has been summarized and discussed. Both nanoparticles and nanoporous materials are evaluated for their unusual performance in sample preparation. Various compositions and functionalizations extended the applications of nanomaterials in sample preparations, and distinct size and shape selectivity was generated from the diversified pore structures of nanoporous materials. Such great variety make nanomaterials a kind of versatile tools in sample preparation for almost all categories of analytes.

Abstract
Antibiotics are a class of therapeutic molecules widely employed in both human and veterinary medicine. This article reviews the most recent advances in the analysis of antibiotics by CE in pharmaceutical, environmental, food, and biomedical fields. Emphasis is placed on the strategies to increase sensitivity as diverse off-line, in-line, and on-line preconcentration approaches and the use of different detection systems. The use of CE in the microchip format for the analysis of antibiotics is also reviewed in this article. Moreover, since the use of antibiotics as chiral selectors in CE has grown in the last years, a new section devoted to this aspect has been included. This review constitutes an update of previous published reviews and covers the literature published from June 2011 until June 2013.
