Zirconia coated stir bar sorptive extraction combined with large volume sample stacking capillary electrophoresis-indirect ultraviolet detection for the determination of chemical warfare agent degradation products in water samples

Controllable in situ growth of novel octahedral TiO2 nanoparticles on nickel/titanium alloy fiber substrate for selective solid-phase microextraction of ultraviolet filters in water samples

The nature and fabrication of fiber coatings with good adsorption capacity and selectivity play a decisive role in solid-phase microextraction (SPME). In this work, a novel SPME fiber was fabricated through hydrothermal in situ growth of octahedral TiO₂ nanoparticles (TiO₂NPs) on a superelastic nickel/titanium alloy (NiTi) wire substrate in acid solution. The resulting fiber coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Acid types, acid concentration as well as hydrothermal temperature and time were found to be effective route to manipulate the morphologies and composition of TiO₂-based nanoflakes grown on the NiTi fiber substrates. At the concentration of 0.4 mol L⁻¹ HCl as well as hydrothermal temperature of 150 °C and hydrothermal time of 12 h, TiO₂NPs were in situ grown on the NiTi wire substrates. The obtained NiTi wire with the TiO₂NPs coating (NiTi@TiO₂NPs fiber) was employed to investigate the adsorption of some representative aromatic analytes in water samples coupling with high-performance liquid chromatography with UV detection (HPLC/UV). The results clearly demonstrate that the fiber exhibits good extraction selectivity for ultraviolet filters (UVFs). In view of good extraction selectivity for the selected UVFs, the key experimental parameters were optimized. Under the optimum conditions, the calibration curves were linear in the ranges of 0.05–100 μg L⁻¹ with the correlation coefficients greater than 0.998. Limits of detection (LODs) were 0.007 to 0.064 μg L⁻¹. Furthermore, the intra-day and inter-day repeatability of the proposed method with the single fiber varied from 4.3% to 6.1% and from 4.5% to 6.8%, respectively. The fiber-to-fiber reproducibility ranged from 5.8% to 8.2%. The developed SPME-HPLC/UV method was applied to selective preconcentration and sensitive determination of target UVFs from real water samples. Moreover, the fabricated fiber showed precisely controllable growth and 150 extraction and desorption cycles.

This work presents a facile strategy with in situ growth of TiO₂ nanoparticles on nickel/titanium alloy wire through hydrothermal method for selective preconcentration and determination of UVFs in water.

Methodological aspects of methylphosphonic acid analysis: Determination in river and coastal water samples

Methylphosphonic acid (MPn) is suspected to play an important role in aquatic systems like rivers or the open ocean. To gain more insights into the importance of MPn, e.g., for the aquatic phosphorus cycle, an analytical method for its quantitative determination was developed. The method is based on the use of an isotopically-labelled internal standard and sample preparation including solid-phase extraction (SPE). Instrumental detection was done using GC-MS after derivatisation of MPn with N-tert-Butyldimethylsilyl-N-methyltrifluoroacetamide (MTBSTFA). The study compares different isotopically-labelled compounds as well as different SPE-materials. As water samples with high salt content decrease the recovery of the chosen SPE-material, a desalting procedure using electrodialysis was implemented. Finally, water samples from different aquatic systems located at the German Baltic Sea coastal area were analysed to gain first insights into the relevance of MPn in these systems. MPn-concentrations in the low μg/L-range were detected.

Stir bar sorptive extraction: recent applications, limitations and future trends

Stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) has generated growing interest due to its high effectiveness for the extraction of non-polar and medium-polarity compounds from liquid samples or liquid extracts. In particular, in recent years, a large amount of new analytical applications of SBSE has been proposed for the extraction of natural compounds, pollutants and other organic compounds in foods, biological samples, environmental matrices and pharmaceutical products. The present review summarizes and discusses the theory behind SBSE and the most recent developments concerning its effectiveness. In addition, the main results of recent analytical approaches and their applications, published in the last three years, are described. The advantages, limitations and disadvantages of SBSE are described and an overview of future trends and novel extraction sorbents and supports is given.

Quantitation of five organophosphorus nerve agent metabolites in serum using hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry

Although nerve agent use is prohibited, concerns remain for human exposure to nerve agents during decommissioning, research, and warfare. Exposure can be detected through the analysis of hydrolysis products in urine as well as blood. An analytical method to detect exposure to five nerve agents, including VX, VR (Russian VX), GB (sarin), GD (soman), and GF (cyclosarin), through the analysis of the hydrolysis products, which are the primary metabolites, in serum has been developed and characterized. This method uses solid-phase extraction coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography for separation and isotopic dilution tandem mass spectrometry for detection. An uncommon buffer of ammonium fluoride was used to enhance ionization and improve sensitivity when coupled with hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography resulting in detection limits from 0.3 to 0.5 ng/mL. The assessment of two quality control samples demonstrated high accuracy (101-105%) and high precision (5-8%) for the detection of these five nerve agent hydrolysis products in serum.
