Abstract
In order to make up for the deficiencies of traditional C18 column for separating strong polar compounds, combined with the good hydrophilicity of carbon dots (CDs), novel octadecylamine-derived CDs denoted as C18-CDs are designed, synthesized and applied in RPLC/HILIC mixed-mode chromatography with good separation performance towards both hydrophobic and hydrophilic compounds. C18-CDs are synthesized by simple one-step solvothermal method using octadecylamine and citric acid as carbon sources, and C18-CDs with proper polarity are collected through column chromatography purification. This C18-CDs decorated silica column showed good separation performance for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and alkylbenzenes under RPLC mode. Hydrophilic compounds including sulfonamides, nucleosides and nucleobases also achieved good resolution in HILIC mode. Hydrophobic and π-π stacking interactions play major retaining roles in RPLC, whereas hydrophilic partitioning and hydrogen bond interactions turn to the main retention interactions under HILIC mode. This C18-CDs/SiO2 column was applied for the fast detection of chloramphenicol in milk without complex sample pretreatment process. Quantitative relationship between the peak area and the concentration of chloramphenicol was established with linear equation of A = 1677c + 173. Satisfactory spiked recoveries in the range of 94.1-109.0% were obtained. This work not only proposes a simple method for improving the polarity of C18 column through forming octadecane into CDs, but also provides novel CDs with certain hydrophobicity/hydrophily suitable for mixed-mode chromatography.

Amphipathic carbon quantum dots-functionalized silica stationary phase for reversed phase/hydrophilic interaction chromatography. Talanta 2021; 226:122148. Abstract
Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are considered as good chromatographic separation materials. However, due to the hydrophily of the synthesized CQDs, their applications in HPLC are limited to HILIC for separating strong polar compounds only. In this work, a novel amphipathic CQDs with both hydrophobicity and hydrophily is developed as mixed-mode stationary phase for RPLC/HILIC. To give CQDs certain hydrophobicity, 1,8-diaminooctane is chosen as one of the carbon sources for introducing alkyl chain into CQDs. The amphipathic CQDs modified silica (CQDs/SiO2) stationary phase has typical characteristic of RPLC/HILIC. Both hydrophobic and hydrophilic compounds including alkylbenzenes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, nucleosides and bases, amino acids, β-adrenoceptor blockers and agonists, sulfonamides, antibiotics and alkaloids obtain satisfactory separation on this CQDs/SiO2 column. 14 nucleosides and bases commonly existing in living organisms achieve good separation on this amphipathic CQDs/SiO2 column within 25 min and the resolutions reach 1.33-13.83 with an average column efficiency of 18,800. The retention mechanism of this novel CQDs/SiO2 column is investigated by linear solvation energy relationship model. It is found that hydrophobic interaction, π-π stacking, hydrogen-bonding and electrostatic interactions are main retention interactions under RPLC mode. This work provides a new approach for synthesis of amphipathic CQDs. Also, it indicates that amphipathic CQDs with versatile functional properties have great prospect in separation science.

Abstract
In this work, two mixed-mode columns from a different manufacturers and one marketed as a reversed-phase column were characterized and compared in the terms of their interaction abilities, retentivity, peak symmetry, and applicability for peptide separation. All the tested columns contain octadecyl ligand and positively charged modifier, i.e. pyridyl group for the reversed-phase column XSelect CSH C18, quaternary alkylamine for mixed-mode column Atlantis PREMIER BEH C18 AX, and permanently charged moiety (details not available from the manufacturer) for mixed-mode column Luna Omega PS C18. For detailed characterization and comparison of their interaction potential, several approaches were used. First, a simple Walters test was performed to estimate hydrophobic and silanophilic interactions of the tested columns. The highest values of both parameters were observed for column Atlantis PREMIER BEH C18 AX. To investigate the effect of pH and buffer concentration on retention, mobile phases composed of acetonitrile and buffer (ammonium formate, pH 3.0; ammonium acetate pH 4.7 and pH 6.9) in various concentrations (5mM; 10mM; 15mM and 20mM) were used. The analysis of permanently charged compounds was used to describe the electrostatic interaction abilities of the stationary phases. The most significant contribution of electrostatic interactions to the retention was observed for Atlantis PREMIER BEH C18 AX column in the mobile phase with buffer of pH 3.0. A set of ten dipeptides, three pentapeptides and one octapeptide was used to investigate the effects of pH and buffer concentration on retention and peak symmetry. Each of the tested columns provides the optimal peak shape under different buffer pH and concentration. The gradient separation of the 14 tested peptides was used to verify the application potential of the tested columns for peptide separation. The best separation was achieved within 4 minutes on column Atlantis PREMIER BEH C18 AX.

Abstract
Several newly synthesized or forgotten silica-based stationary phases proposed for liquid chromatography are described, including non-endcapped, short-chain alkyl phases; hydrophilic and polar-endcapped stationary phases; polar-embedded alkyl phases; long-chain alkyl phases. Stationary phases with aromatic, cyanopropyl, diol and aminopropyl functionalities are also reviewed. Stationary phases of particular interest are biomolecular materials - based on immobilized cholesterol, aminoacids, peptides, proteins or lipoproteins. Packing materials involving macrocyclic chemistry (crown ethers; calixarenes; aza-macrocycles; oligo-and polysaccharides including these of marine origin - chitin- or chitosan-based; macrocyclic antibiotics) are discussed. Since many stationary phases developed for one type of applications (e.g. chiral separation) have been found useful in solving other analytical problems (e.g. drug's plasma protein binding ability), it seemed reasonable to discuss particular chemistries behind the stationary phases presented in this review rather than specific types of interactions or chromatographic modes.

Abstract
Cyclofructans are cyclic oligosaccharides made of β-2,1-linked fructofuranose units. They have been utilized as chiral selectors, usually after derivatization, with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC), capillary electrophoresis (CE), and supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC). The focus herein will be directed to their development and applications as chiral selectors in various chiral separation techniques. Discussion of their use in hydrophilic liquid interaction chromatography (HILIC) will be limited. Their use in liquid chromatography, especially their improvements with the use of superficially porous particles (SPPs) will be emphasized. Method parameters and future directions are also discussed.

Abstract
The chromatographic behavior of new biogenic purine nucleosides in hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography was examined on three different stationary phases, namely bare silica, and amide- and cyclofructan-based stationary phases. The effects of buffer concentration, pH and acetonitrile-to-aqueous-part ratio in the mobile phase on retention and peak shape were assessed. The retention coefficients and peak symmetry values substantially differed with respect to analytes´ structures, stationary phase properties and mobile phase composition. The bare silica column was unsuitable for these compounds under the chromatographic conditions tested due to very broad and asymmetrical peaks. Furthermore, the cyclofructan-based stationary phase provided almost Gaussian peak shapes of all deazapurine nucleosides under most conditions tested. Therefore, the cyclofructan-based stationary phase is the most suitable choice for the chromatographic analysis of nucleosides.

Abstract
Because of its high conductivity when acid doped, polyaniline is known as a synthetic metal and is used in a wide range of applications, such as supercapacitors, biosensors, electrochromic devices, or solar and fuel cells. Emeraldine is the partly oxidized, stable form of polyaniline, consisting of alternating diaminobenzenoid and iminoquinoid segments. When acidified, the nitrogen atoms of emeraldine become protonated. Due to electrostatic repulsion between positive charges, the polarity and morphology of emeraldine chains presumably change; however, the protonation effects on emeraldine have not yet been clarified. Thus, we investigated these changes by reversed-phase capillary liquid chromatography using a linear solvation energy relationship approach to assess differences in dominant retention interactions under a significantly varied mobile phase pH. We observed that hydrophobicity dominates the intermolecular interactions under both acidic and alkaline eluent conditions, albeit to different extents. Therefore, by tuning the mobile phase pH, we can even modulate the retention of neutral hydrophobic solutes, such as aromatic hydrocarbons, because the pH-dependent charge and structure of polymer chains of the emeraldine-coated silica stationary phase show a mixed-mode separation mechanism.

Abstract
A double β-alanylated L-glutamide-derived organic phase has been newly designed and synthesized in such a way that integrated H-bonding (interaction) sites make it very suitable for the separation of versatile analytes, including shape-constrained isomers, and nonpolar, polar and basic compounds. The β-alanine residues introduced into two long-chain alkyl group moieties provide ordered polar groups through H-bonding among the amide groups.

Abstract
Three cyclofructan-based, two glycopeptide-based, and one zwitterionic column used in the HILIC mode were assessed within a graphical framework based on different functional characteristics contributing to selectivity. The characteristics of these six HILIC columns are put in the perspective of 33 columns evaluated previously. The isopropyl carbamate modified cyclofructan 6 (CF6) stationary phase, Larihc P, showed reduced component contributions for hydrophilicity and hydrogen bonding relative to the native cyclofructan 6 column (Frulic N). Both Frulic N and Larihc P exhibited cation exchange attributed primarily to deprotonation of residual unsubstituted silica with the greater exchange ascribed to the reduced loading of CF6 observed for Larihc P. The cyclofructan 6 column with a polymeric styrene divinylbenzene support (MCI GEL™ CRS100) showed distinct selectivities consistent with its decreased cation exchange attributable to its nonionic core. The Chirobiotic T, Chirobiotic V, and ZI-DPPS columns displayed hydrophilicity and ion exchange selectivities similar to other zwitterionic stationary phases. All of the more hydrophilic columns showed excellent separation for the four classes of therapeutic peptides investigated: microbial secondary metabolites used as immune suppressants, synthetic gonadotropin hormones, synthetic cyclic disulfide-linked hormone-regulating hormones, and non-ribosomally derived polycyclic antibiotics. Resolution provided by these columns and ZIC-HILIC is compared for each class of peptide. Frulic N is primarily suitable for use in the HILIC mode whereas Chirobiotic T, because of its increased efficiency and selectivity, can be useful in both HILIC and reverse phase modes. In some Chirobiotic T applications, addition of low levels of a strong additive (trifluoroacetic acid, formic acid, etc.) to the mobile phase can be beneficial. In these peptide analyses, a relative weakening of the often-dominant ionic interaction between analyte and residual charge on the stationary phase improved resolution and selectivity.

Abstract
Glucaminium-based ionic liquids are a new class of recently developed ionic liquids and prepared by functionalizing the amine group of N-methyl-d-glucamine, which renders them good hydrophilicity due to the presence of the glucose structure and charged quaternary ammonium group. In the present study, a glucaminium-based ionic liquid N,N-diallyl-N-methyl-d-glucaminium bromide was synthesized and subsequently bonded to the surface of 3-mercaptopropyl modified silica materials through "thiol-ene" click chemistry. The obtained stationary phase was characterized by elemental analysis and infrared spectroscopy, and then packed as a HPLC column. A mixture of five nucleosides was used to characterize the separation performance of the obtained column under HILIC mode and the column efficiency was determined with cytidine as the test solute, reaching 80,000plates/m. Then, the retention behavior was evaluated by investigating the effect of various chromatographic factors on retention of different types of solutes, and the results revealed that the developed surface-confined glucaminium-based ionic liquid stationary phase exhibited a hydrophilic interaction/anion-exchange mixed-mode retention mechanism. Finally, two mixtures of nucleotides and flavonoids were separated on the glucaminium-based ionic liquid column, respectively under hydrophilic interaction and hydrophilic interaction/anion-exchange mixed-mode chromatography. In conclusion, the multimodal retention capabilities of the glucaminium-based ionic liquid column could offer a wider range of retention behavior and flexible selectivity toward polar and hydrophilic compounds.
