Features of a truxene-based stationary phase in capillary gas chromatography for separation of some challenging isomers

Hydroxyl-functionalized pillar[5]arene with high separation performance for gas chromatography

Here we report the first example of employing hydroxyl-functionalized pillar[5]arene (P5A-C10-OH) as stationary phase for capillary gas chromatographic (GC) separations. The statically coated P5A-C10-OH capillary column possessed moderate polarity and column efficiency of 3233 plates per m determined by n-dodecane. As a result, the P5A-C10-OH column exhibited high-resolution capability for the mixture of 17 analytes from apolar to polar nature. Importantly, it exhibited advantageous performance for high resolution of the challenging isomers of bromonitrobenzene, chloroaniline, bromoaniline, iodoaniline and dimethylaniline with good peak shapes over the P5A-C10 and commercial HP-35 columns. In addition, eight cis-/trans-isomers with diverse types were baseline separated on the P5A-C10-OH column. And the application of detecting isomeric impurities in real samples gave strong evidence of its potential and feasibility for the viable GC analysis.

A new organic soluble cucurbit[7]uril-truxene derivative as stationary phase for gas chromatographic separation of some challenging isomers

The insolubility of parent cucurbit[n]uril or substituted-cucurbit[n]uril derivatives in organic solvents has always been a key factor restricting the column efficiency and selectivity of capillary gas chromatography column based on cucurbit[n]uril. In this work, a novel organic soluble cucurbit [7]uril-truxene derivative (Q [7]-Tr) was synthesized by Heck coupling reaction between the mono-iodinated hexahexyl-truxene and 4-vinylbenzyloxy-Q [7]. A capillary gas chromatographic column was prepared by static method with this derivative as stationary phase. The column exhibited moderate polarity and an efficiency of 5857 plates/m using n-dodecane as analyte at 120 °C, indicating the highest column efficiency of all the based-cucurbit[n]uril columns published. The Q [7]-Tr column showed high resolutions for a wide range of analytes with different polarities and better separated selectivity towards tough isomers such as aromatic amines isomers and xylene isomers compared to commercial HP-5, DB-35, Stabilwax and Q [7]-based columns. Moreover, the new column exhibited high thermal stability up to 320 °C and excellent repeatability, demonstrating a great potential as a new stationary phase in capillary gas chromatography.

Efficient gas chromatographic separation of xylene and other aromatic isomers by using pillar[6]arene-based stationary phase

The separation of aromatic isomers, in particular xylene isomers, represents a big issue in chemical and petroleum industries, owing to their similar molecular sizes and boiling points. In this work, the investigation ofpillar[6]arene derivative modified by long alkyl chains (P6A-C10) as a stationary phase for high-resolution gas chromatographic (GC) separations of xylene isomers is presented. Pillar[n]arenes are a new class of macrocyclic hosts that can accommodate specific guests due to their highly symmetrical and rigid pillar architectures with π-electron rich cavities. The P6A-C10 column showed high-resolution performance towards xylene isomers, with peculiar advantages if compared with the commercial HP-5, HP-35, DB-17, and PEG-20Mcolumns.A quantum chemistry calculation has been performed, showing a difference in non-covalent interactions with the P6A-C10 pillar framework, which leads to specific selectivity for xylene isomers.Furthermore, the P6A-C10 column exhibited good repeatability.

Isomer recognition by dynamic guest-adaptive ligand rotation in a metal-organic framework with local flexibility

Local flexibility in a metal-organic framework is intriguing for reconstructing a microenvironment to distinguish different guest molecules by emphasizing their differences. Herein, guest-adaptive flexibility is observed in a metal-organic framework for efficiently discriminating aromatic isomers. Microcrystal electron diffraction directly reveals that the anthracene rings can rotate around the single bond with the adsorption of guest molecules. Disorder transformation of the ligand enables the preferential adsorption of ethylbenzene over other xylene isomers. Especially, a coated capillary column combining single/multi-component adsorption confirms a unique separation order of ethylbenzene > p-xylene > m-xylene > o-xylene with excellent selectivities, which has not been reported in other materials. Density functional theory calculations and the calculated Hirshfeld surface of guest molecules in the framework demonstrate that a guest-induced splint-like confinement structure makes the main contribution to such separation performance. This finding will provide a rational strategy for molecular recognition utilizing the local flexibility of metal-organic frameworks.

High selectivity of a novel D–A structured copolymer as a gas chromatographic stationary phase toward aromatic isomers

Separation performance of the copolymer and homopolymer of aliphatic polycarbonate diols as the stationary phases for capillary gas chromatography

This work presents the investigation of two aliphatic polycarbonate diols (CAPC and HAPC) as the stationary phases for capillary gas chromatography (GC). The CAPC and HAPC capillary columns showed moderate polarity and high column efficiency of 3704 - 4545 plates/m measured by n-octanol and naphthalene at 120 °C. It was found that despite their similar chemical compositions, CAPC and HAPC differ largely in their selectivity towards the isomers of alkanes, methylpyridines and xylenes. As demonstrated, the CAPC column exhibits advantageous comprehensive performance over the HAPC column and the commercial PEG column. Particularly, the CAPC column exhibits higher resolving performance towards the isomers indicated above and the Grob mixture than the HAPC column. Also, it shows distinct advantages over the PEG column in separating the Grob mixture, the isomers of diethylbenzenes and cymenes, and practical analysis of chemical products and the essential oil from the leaves of Rhododendron dauricum L. Additionally, the CAPC column has excellent repeatability and reproducibility on analyte retention times with the relative standard deviation (RSD) values in the range of 0.05% - 0.08% for run-to-run, 0.12% - 0.19% for day-to-day and 2.6% - 4.9% for column-to-column, respectively. Its applications to purity test of chemical products and GC-MS analysis of the essential oil demonstrate its promising future for practical GC analyses.

Halogen bond in separation science: A critical analysis across experimental and theoretical results

The halogen bond (XB) is a noncovalent interaction involving a halogen acting as electrophile and a Lewis base. In the last decades XB has found practical application in several fields. Nevertheless, despite the pivotal role of noncovalent interactions in separation science, investigations of XB in this field are still in their infancy, and so far a limited number of studies focusing on solid phase extraction, liquid-liquid microextraction, liquid-phase chromatography, and gas chromatography separation have been published. In addition, in the last few years, our groups have been systematically studying the potentiality of XB for HPLC enantioseparations. On this basis, in the present paper up-to-date results emerging from focused experiments and theoretical analyses performed by our laboratories are integrated with a descriptive presentation of XB features and the few studies published until now in separation science. Then, the aim of this article is to provide a comprehensive and critical discussion of the topic, and account for some still open issues in the application of XB to separate chemical mixtures.

High-resolution separation performance of poly(caprolactone)diol for challenging isomers of xylenes, phenols and anilines by capillary gas chromatography

Efficient separation of xylenes, phenols and anilines is a big issue in chemical and petroleum industries. This work presents the first example of employing poly (caprolactone) diol (PCL-Diol) as stationary phase for high-resolution gas chromatographic (GC) separations of these tough isomer mixtures. It showed medium polarity and stronger H-bonding basicity than H-bonding acidity. Impressively, PCL-Diol column exhibited extremely high resolving capability for the isomer mixtures of xylenes, cresols/xylenols, and toluidines/xylidines with good peak shapes. Moreover, it exhibited preferential retention for analytes of a linear alkyl chain, suggesting its shape fitting selectivity for specific analytes. In addition, its separation performance has good repeatability with RSD values on retention times below 0.01% for run to run (n=6), 0.67-0.80% for day to day (n=4) and 3.2-4.4% for column to column (n=4) repeatability, respectively. Furthermore, it was applied for the determination of isomer impurities in real samples, showing good potential for practical use. This work demonstrates the advantageous high-resolution separation performance for challenging isomers and shows its promising future of PCL-Diol-based materials in separation science.
