Tracking Aromatic Amines from Sources to Surface Waters

This review examines the environmental occurrence and fate of aromatic amines (AAs), a group of environmental contaminants with possible carcinogenic and mutagenic effects. AAs are known to be partially responsible for the genotoxic traits of industrial wastewater (WW), and AA antioxidants are acutely toxic to some aquatic organisms. Still, there are gaps in the available data on sources, occurrence, transport, and fate in domestic WW and indoor environments, which complicate the prevention of adverse effects in aquatic ecosystems. We review key domestic sources of these compounds, including cigarette smoke and grilled protein-rich foods, and their presence indoors and in aquatic matrices. This provides a basis to evaluate the importance of nonindustrial sources to the overall environmental burden of AAs. Appropriate sampling techniques for AAs are described, including copper-phthalocyanine trisulfonate materials, XAD resins in solid-phase extraction, and solid-phase microextraction methods, which can offer insights into AA sources, transport, and fate. Further discussion is provided on potential progress in the research of AAs and their behavior in an aim to support the development of a more comprehensive understanding of their effects and potential environmental risks.

Polyoxometalate-based materials in extraction, and electrochemical and optical detection methods: A review

Polyoxometalates (POMs) as metal-oxide anions have exceptional properties like high negative charges, remarkable redox abilities, unique ligand properties and availability of organic grafting. Moreover, the amenability of POMs to modification with different materials makes them suitable as precursors to further obtain new composites. Due to their unique attributes, POMs and their composites have been utilized as adsorbents, electrodes and catalysts in extraction, and electrochemical and optical detection methods, respectively. A survey of the recent progress and developments of POM-based materials in these methods is therefore desirable, and should be of great interest. In this review article, POM-based materials, their properties as well as their identification methods, and analytical applications as adsorbents, electrodes and catalysts, and corresponding mechanisms of action, where relevant, are reviewed. Some current issues of the utilization of these materials and their future prospects in analytical chemistry are discussed.

On-site sample preparation of trace aromatic amines in environmental waters with monolith-based multichannel in-tip microextraction apparatus followed by HPLC determination

A novel on-site preparation strategy for the determination of trace aromatic amines (AAs) in environmental waters was developed in the present study. To extract AAs effectively, 4-vinylbenzoic acid was copolymerized with ethylene dimethacrylate (ED)/divinylbenzene (DVB) in a pipette tip to obtain a new monolith-based adsorbent (MBA). The MBAs were employed as the extraction phases of home-made multichannel in-tip microextraction apparatus (ITMA) which was used to perform field sample preparation of AAs in different water samples followed by HPLC/DAD analysis. Due to the abundant functional groups, the prepared MBA displayed satisfying extraction performance for studied AAs. Under the optimized conditions, limits of detection varied from 2.1 to 26 ng/L with good coefficients of determination and precision. The recoveries for real water samples with different fortified concentrations were in the range of 78.1-119%, and the RSD values varied from 0.85 to 11%. In addition, the results achieved with the introduced method were well comparable to that obtained with conventional laboratory sample pretreatment process. Compared with existing approaches, the proposed method exhibits some merits such as s high throughput, good sensitivity and eco-friendliness. Most of important, the MBA/ITMA for on-site preparation avoids the storage and transportation of large volumes of waters, and guarantees the analytical accuracy of studied AAs.

The fabrication of a thiol-modified chitosan magnetic graphene oxide nanocomposite and its adsorption performance towards the illegal drug clenbuterol in pork samples

A novel thiol (provided by (3-mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane, MPTS)-modified chitosan magnetic graphene oxide nanocomposite (Fe₃O₄@SiO₂/GO/CS/MPTS) was synthesized and characterized for the first time as an efficient magnetic sorbent for the enrichment and extraction of trace levels of clenbuterol in pork samples (muscle, fat, heart and liver). Various greatly influential parameters were optimized using a Box-Behnken design (BBD) through the response surface methodology (RSM) to obtain more satisfactory recovery. Under optimum conditions, the method detection limits (MDLs) were in the range of 0.054-0.136 ng g^-1. The recoveries of three spiked levels ranged from 84.7% to 101.1%, and the relative standard deviations (RSDs) were lower than 9.3%. The results of the adsorption experiments showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of Fe₃O₄@SiO₂/GO/CS/MPTS for clenbuterol was 214.13 mg g^-1. The adsorption process was most consistent with pseudo second-order kinetics and Langmuir adsorption isotherm, indicating a homogeneous process with a chemisorptive nature. Also, the nanocomposite exhibited high adsorption capability for clenbuterol compared with Fe₃O₄@SiO₂/GO and Fe₃O₄@SiO₂/GO/CS. In addition, regeneration of the nanocomposite was effectively achieved, and it retained about 82% of its initial capacity after four cycles. All these results indicate that the synthetic nanocomposite is a promising efficient adsorbent for the adsorption of clenbuterol with high adsorption capacity and low cost.

High-affinity graphene oxide-encapsulated magnetic Zr-MOF for pretreatment and rapid determination of the photosensitizers hematoporphyrin and hematoporphyrin monomethyl ether in human urine prior to UPLC-HRMS

In this paper, a high-affinity graphene oxide-encapsulated magnetic Zr-MOF (GO-Mag@Zr-MOF) was synthesized and characterized by SEM, TEM, and XPS for its morphology, structure, and components. Subsequently, the as-prepared GO-Mag@Zr-MOF was, for the first time, employed as magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) adsorbent for pretreatment and determination of photodynamic therapy (PDT) with the photosensitizers hematoporphyrin (Hp) and hematoporphyrin monomethyl ether (HMME) in human urine samples coupled with ultra-performance liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (UPLC-HRMS). The synthesized GO-Mag@Zr-MOF revealed excellent adsorption efficiency for Hp and HMME in urine samples. Under optimal conditions, the spiked recoveries of the developed method were in the range of 89.5-105.6% with RSDs less than 10%. The limits of detection (LODs) were found to be 0.036 and 0.042 μg/L for Hp and HMME, respectively, while limits of quantitation (LOQs) were 0.12 and 0.14 μg/L. The proposed method was found to be rapid, effective, sensitive, and accurate for clinical analysis. Moreover, this paper, for the first time, carefully expounded the mass spectrum cracking mechanisms of Hp and HMME. Graphical abstract ᅟ.

Magnetic solid-phase extraction for the analysis of bisphenol A, naproxen and triclosan in wastewater samples

Magnetic Fe₃O₄ graphene oxide nanocomposite was synthesized by chemical coprecipitation method and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectra and X-ray diffraction. A simple, rapid, convenient and environmentally friendly method was developed for separation and pre-concentration of trace amounts of bisphenol A, naproxen and triclosan in wastewater samples by high performance liquid chromatography with magnetic Fe₃O₄ graphene oxide nanocomposite as the adsorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction. Various parameters possibly influencing the extraction performance such as amount of the adsorbent, extraction time, sample pH and elution conditions were optimized. Under the optimal working conditions, the developed method showed good linearity (R > 0.9997) in the range of 1-200 μg/L, and the limits of detection are between 0.5 and 0.8 μg/L. The enrichment factors are in the range of 81-89. The repeatability of the method, expressed as relative standard deviation, is 3.36-4.26%.

A hybrid material composed of a polyoxometalate of type BeW12O40 and an ionic liquid immobilized onto magnetic nanoparticles as a sorbent for the extraction of organophosphorus pesticides prior to their determination by gas chromatography

The authors describe a method for the extraction of organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) by using a magnetically separable sorbent consisting of a polyoxometalate of type BeW₁₂O₄₀ supported on imidazole functionalized silica-coated cobalt ferrite. The sorbent was characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, field-emission scanning electron micrographs, vibrating sample magnetometry and FT-IR. The effects of the amount of adsorbent, pH value, salt concentration, extraction time, desorption solvent nature and volume and desorption time were investigated. Under optimal conditions, the method resulted in the following figures of merit: (a) the linear parts of the calibration plots typically extend from 0.08 to 300 μg mL^-1 of OPPs; (b) detection limits are between 0.02 to 0.06 ng mL^-1; and (c), extraction recoveries from spiked samples vary from 70.0 to 89.2%, with relative standard deviations between 5.4 and 7.6%. The nanocomposites can be reused up to 10 times. Compared to other methods for pretreatment and preconcentration of OPPs, the new method is more rapid, sensitive, accurate and eco-friendly. The method was successfully applied to the determination of the OPP residues in water samples and fruit juices. Poly(pyrrole-co-aniline)@graphene oxide/Fe3O4 sorbent for the extraction and preconcentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from water samples

In this work, the extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with an efficient poly(pyrrole-co-aniline)@graphene oxide/Fe₃O₄ [poly(Py-co-Ani)@GO–Fe₃O₄] nanocomposite followed by GC-FID is presented.
