Determination of volatile organic compounds in pen inks by a dynamic headspace needle trap device combined with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry

Non-target screening of volatile organic compounds in spray-type consumer products and their potential health risks

Widespread use of spray-type consumer products can raise significant concerns regarding their effects on indoor air quality and human health. In this study, we conducted non-target screening using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to analyze VOCs in 48 different spray-type consumer products. Using this approach, we tentatively identified a total of 254 VOCs from the spray-type products. Notably, more VOCs were detected in propellant-type products which are mostly solvent-based than in trigger-type ones which are mostly water-based. The VOCs identified encompass various chemical classes including alkanes, cycloalkanes, monoterpenoids, carboxylic acid derivatives, and carbonyl compounds, some of which arouse concerns due to their potential health effects. Alkanes and cycloalkanes are frequently detected in propellant-type products, whereas perfumed monoterpenoids are ubiquitous across all product categories. Among the identified VOCs, 12 compounds were classified into high-risk groups according to detection frequency and signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio, and their concentrations were confirmed using reference standards. Among the identified VOCs, D-limonene was the most frequently detected compound (freq. 21/48), with the highest concentration of 1.80 mg/g. The risk assessment was performed to evaluate the potential health risks associated with exposure to these VOCs. The non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks associated with the assessed VOC compounds were relatively low. However, it is important not to overlook the risk faced by occupational exposure to these VOCs, and the risk from simultaneous exposure to various VOCs contained in the products. This study serves as a valuable resource for the identification of unknown compounds in the consumer products, facilitating the evaluation of potential health risks to consumers.

Polyoxometalate-based materials in extraction, and electrochemical and optical detection methods: A review

Polyoxometalates (POMs) as metal-oxide anions have exceptional properties like high negative charges, remarkable redox abilities, unique ligand properties and availability of organic grafting. Moreover, the amenability of POMs to modification with different materials makes them suitable as precursors to further obtain new composites. Due to their unique attributes, POMs and their composites have been utilized as adsorbents, electrodes and catalysts in extraction, and electrochemical and optical detection methods, respectively. A survey of the recent progress and developments of POM-based materials in these methods is therefore desirable, and should be of great interest. In this review article, POM-based materials, their properties as well as their identification methods, and analytical applications as adsorbents, electrodes and catalysts, and corresponding mechanisms of action, where relevant, are reviewed. Some current issues of the utilization of these materials and their future prospects in analytical chemistry are discussed.

Effects of Processing Method Changes in Main Volatile Compounds of Qixue Shuangbu Prescription by Needle Trap Device Coupled with Gas Chromatography-Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry

Qixue Shuangbu Prescription (QSP) has been widely applied in the treatment of chronic heart failure (CHF). Previous clinical studies have found that the efficacy of processed QSP was significantly enhanced in the treatment of CHF. We have identified and analyzed the nonvolatile components before and after processing of QSP, and predicted the mechanism of synergistic effect after processing in the treatment of CHF. However, the synergistic mechanism of processed QSP caused by the difference of volatile components was still unclear. In this study, we developed a method of needle trap device coupled with gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry to elucidate the difference of volatile components between crude and processed QSP. The established method has been used to identify 104 volatile compounds in crude and processed QSP. The results of multivariate data showed 38 differential compounds were screened as potential markers, which would further explain the mechanism of processing synergistic effect of processed QSP. This study successfully developed the method to elucidate its processing mechanism based on the difference of volatile compositions between crude and processed QSP for the first time, and it would provide a novel analytical strategy for the impacts of different processing methods on main volatile compounds in traditional Chinese medicine.

Highly Selective Chloromethanes Detection Based on Quartz Crystal Microbalance Gas Sensors with Ba-MOFs

Three new metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), {(CH₃NH₃)₃[Ba₂(TTHA)(NO₃)(H₂O)₂]}·2H₂O (1), {(CH₃NH₃)₄[Ba₃(HTTHA)₂(H₂O)₇]}·3H₂O (2), and [Ba₇(TTHA)₂(NO₃)₂(H₂O)₁₀]·2H₂O (3) (H₆TTHA = 1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triamineh-exaacetic acid) have been synthesized and characterized. The sensing properties of 1-3 were explored with regard to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) technique. The results indicated that 1 and 2 have a much higher selectivity and response to chloromethanes (CH₂Cl₂, CHCl₃, and CCl₄) compared with H₂O, CH₃OH, CH₃CH₂OH, CH₃CN, (CH₃)₂CO, C₆H₆, C₆H₅CH₃, C₆H₅CH₂CH₃, and C₆H₅Cl at room temperature. Furthermore, 1 and 2 sensing film also exhibits excellent reversibility and stability, and the response and recovery times are almost within 10 s. 3 displays a lower response and poor selectivity to the above VOCs. The significant difference may be caused by their different structural characteristics. The Ba²⁺ ions are all decacoordinated in 1 and 2, while Ba²⁺ ions have more open metal sites in 3. So, the high selectivity and response of 1 and 2 may be due to the exchange of coordination water molecules with chloromethanes and possible electrostatic effects between (CH₃NH₃)⁺ cations and chloromethanes containing more electronegative Cl atoms. DFT calculation results show that the bond energy of Ba-Cl and Ba-O is not much different, so chloromethanes at high concentrations may exchange coordination water to form weak Ba···Cl interactions and show higher response values. 3 has no obvious VOCs selectivity and higher response due to more open sites of Ba²⁺ ions and smaller pore size. This work develops a fast and effective method to detect chloromethanes, providing a new opportunity for designing QCM gas sensors coated with different MOF materials.

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks in analytical sample preparation

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks are a class of metal-organic frameworks that are topologically isomorphic with zeolites. Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks are composed of tetrahedrally coordinated metal ions connected by imidazolate linkers and have a high porosity and chemical stability. Here, we summarize the progress made in the application of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks in sample preparation for analytical purposes. This review is focused on analytical methods based on liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, or capillary electrophoresis, where the use of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks has contributed to increasing the sensitivity and selectivity of the method. While bulk zeolitic imidazolate frameworks have been directly used in analytical sample preparation protocols, a variety of strategies for their magnetization or their incorporation into sorbent particles, monoliths, fibers, stir bars, or thin films, have been developed. These modifications have facilitated the handling and application of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks for a number of analytical sample treatments including magnetic solid-phase extraction, solid-phase microextraction, stir bar sorptive extraction, or thin film microextraction, among other techniques.

The geometrical characteristics of nickel-based metal organic framework on its entrapment capability

Here, a three dimensional nickel-based metal organic framework (MOF) was synthesized via solvothermal and room temperature protocols. In order to study the effects of the synthesis conditions on the physical properties such as pore sizes and shapes of the prepared MOFs, their extraction capabilities were examined. Both MOFs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller and thermogravimetric analyses. Brilliant properties such as porous structure, high surface area and considerable thermal stability make them reasonable candidates to be employed as efficient extractive phases. The efficiency of the superior nickel-based MOF was evaluated for headspace needle trap extraction of chlorobenzenes as model compounds in conjunction with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The MOF-based extractive phase was conveniently packed in a needle trap device and after extraction, the desorption process was performed via direct insertion of needle into the GC inlet. After optimizing the extraction/desorption conditions, the figures of merit such as linear dynamic range was in the range of 5-1000 ng L^-1 (R² > 0.987) while the limits of detection and quantification values were 2-10 and 6-30 ng L^-1, respectively. The intra- and inter-day relative standard deviations for three replicates at the concentration level of 50 ng L^-1 were in the range of 7-9% and 9-12%, respectively. The needle-to-needle reproducibility was also found to be in the range of 5-11%. Acceptable relative recovery values at the concentration level of 50 ng L^-1 ranged from 85 to 96%, showing no significant matrix effect.

Discrimination of volatiles in herbal formula Baizhu Shaoyao San before and after processing using needle trap device with multivariate data analysis

To characterize the chemical differences of volatile components between crude and processed Baizhu Shaoyao San (BSS), a classical Chinese herbal formula that is widely applied in the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases, we developed a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-based needle trap device combined with multivariate data analysis to globally profile volatile components and rapidly identify differentiating chemical markers. Using a triple-bed needle packed with Carbopack X, DVB and Carboxen 1000 sorbents, we identified 121 and 123 compounds, respectively, in crude and processed BSS. According to the results of principal component analysis and orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant analysis, crude and processed BSS were successfully distinguished into two groups with good fitting and predicting parameters. Furthermore, 21 compounds were identified and adopted as potential markers that could be employed to quickly differentiate these two types of samples using S-PLOT and variable importance in projection analyses. The established method can be applied to explain the chemical transformation of Chinese medicine processing in BSS and further control the quality and understand the processing mechanism of Chinese herbal formulae. Besides, the triple-bed needle selected and optimized in this study can provide a valuable reference for other plant researches with similar components. Furthermore, the systematic research on compound identification and marker discrimination of the complex components in crude and processed BSS could work as an example for other similar studies, such as composition changes in one plant during different growth periods, botanical characters of different medicinal parts in same kind of medicinal herbs and quality identification of one species of medicinal herb from different regions.

Graphene deposited onto aligned zinc oxide nanorods as an efficient coating for headspace solid-phase microextraction of gasoline fractions from oil samples

The content of gasoline fraction in oil samples is not only an important indicator of oil quality, but also an indispensable fundamental data for oil refining and processing. Before its determination, efficient preconcentration and separation of gasoline fractions from complicated matrices is essential. In this work, a thin layer of graphene (G) was deposited onto oriented ZnO nanorods (ZNRs) as a SPME coating. By this approach, the surface area of G was greatly enhanced by the aligned ZNRs, and the surface polarity of ZNRs was changed from polar to less polar, which were both beneficial for the extraction of gasoline fractions. In addition, the ZNRs were well protected by the mechanically and chemically stable G, making the coating highly durable for use. With headspace SPME (HS-SPME) mode, the G/ZNRs coating can effectively extract gasoline fractions from various oil samples, whose extraction efficiency achieved 1.5-5.4 and 2.1-8.2 times higher than those of a G and commercial 7-μm PDMS coating respectively. Coupled with GC-FID, the developed method is sensitive, simple, cost effective and easily accessible for the analysis of gasoline fractions. Moreover, the method is also feasible for the detection of gasoline markers in simulated oil-polluted water, which provides an option for the monitoring of oil spill accident.
