Synthesis of magnetic mesoporous metal-organic framework-5 for the effective enrichment of malachite green and crystal violet in fish samples

Applications of metal organic frameworks in dispersive micro solid phase extraction (D-μ-SPE)

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a fascinating family of crystalline porous materials made up of metal clusters and organic linkers. In comparison with other porous materials, MOFs have unique characteristics including high surface area, homogeneous open cavities, and permanent high porosity with variable shapes and sizes. For these reasons, MOFs have recently been explored as sorbents in sample preparation by solid-phase extraction (SPE). However, SPE requires large amounts of sorbents and suffers from limited contact surfaces with analytes, which compromises extraction recovery and efficiency. Dispersive SPE (D-SPE) overcomes these limitations by dispersing the sorbents into the sample, which in turn increases contact with the analytes. Miniaturization of the microextraction procedure, particularly the amount of sorbent reduces the amount consumed of the organic solvent and shorten the time required to attain the equilibrium state. This may explain the reported high efficiency and applicability of MOFs in dispersive micro SPE (D-µ-SPE). This method retains all the advantages of solid phase extraction while also being simpler, faster, cheaper, and, in some cases, more effective in comparison with D-SPE. Besides, D-µ-SPE requires smaller amounts of the sorbents which reduces the overall cost, and the amount of waste generated from the analytical process. In this review, we discuss the applications of MOFs in D-µ-SPE of various analytes including pharmaceuticals, pesticides, organic dyes from miscellaneous matrices including water samples, biological samples and food samples.

Incorporation of Cu-TATAB metal-organic framework within polyurethane nanocomposite for enhanced thin film microextraction of some chlorinated pesticides

In this research, electrospun nanofibers based on copper-based metal organic framework (MOF)/polyurethane (PU) were prepared in order to achieve an applicable and superior extractive phase. The incorporation of MOF, in the synthesized nanocomposite contributed to the enhanced sorption efficiency. The prepared sorbent was implemented for the thin film microextraction (TFME) of target compounds with subsequent quantification using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). To obtain the maximum efficiency of the synthesized sorbent, the influential parameters on extraction and desorption steps, including the MOF percentage in nanocomposite, desorption solvent type and its volume, desorption time, solution ionic strength and extraction time were optimized. After method development, the linear dynamic range (0.02-700 μg L-1), limits of detection (LODs) (0.005-0.1 μg L-1) and limits of quantification (LOQs))0.02-0.33 μg L-1(were calculated. The relative standard deviations values for intra-day and inter-day analysis were found to be in the range of 4.3-5.3 % and 6.2-8.1 %, respectively. The developed method was validated for the TFME of model organochlorine (OC) pesticide residues in fish, soil and water samples. the recovery values for the spiked samples at two concentration levels of 5 and 100 µg l-1 were found in the range of 72-110 %.

Hexafluorobutanol primary alcohol ethoxylate-based supramolecular solvent formation and their application in direct microextraction of malachite green and crystal violet from lake sediments

A new type of hexafluorobutanol (HFB) primary alcohol ethoxylate (AEO)-based supramolecular solvent (SUPRAS) with density higher than water was prepared for the first time. HFB acted as AEO micelle-forming agent and density-regulating agent for SUPRAS formation. The prepared SUPARS was applied as extraction solvent for vortex-assisted direct microextraction of malachite green (MG) and crystal violet (CV) from lake sediment followed by high-performance liquid chromatographic determination. In the present work, SUPRASs prepared from AEO with different carbon chains as the amphiphiles and various coacervation agents were investigated. SUPARS formed from MOA-3 and HFB provided better extraction efficiency in comparison with other SUPRASs. Parameters influencing the extraction recovery of target analytes including the type and volume of AEO, volume of HFB, and vortex time were investigated and optimized. Under optimized conditions, linearity in the range of 2.0-400 μg g-1 for MG and 2.0-500 μg g-1 for CV with a correlation coefficient higher than 0.9947 was obtained. Limits of detection of 0.5 μg g-1 and relative standard deviations in the range of 0.9-5.8% were obtained. Compared to conventional extraction techniques for analysis of analytes in solid samples, the proposed method reduced sample usage and eliminated a primary extraction process by using a toxic organic solvent. The proposed method is simple, fast, and green and can be used for the analysis of target analytes in solid samples.

RhB-encapsulated metal-organic cage as a dual-emission fluorescence sensor for detection of malachite green and glycine

RhB@ZrT-1-OH composite was constructed by introduction of Rhodamine B (RhB) into the cages of zirconium-based metal-organic cage that had two fluorescence emission peaks at 466 and 612 nm upon excitation at 327 nm. The dual-emission fluorescence sensor exhibits ultra-high sensitive detection for malachite green (MG) and glycine (Gly) in phosphate buffer solution (pH = 6.86). RhB@ZrT-1-OH as a ratiometric fluorescence probe was applied to detect MG with a low LOD of 0.2879 μM and presented obvious fluorescence visual changes from orange to purple to blue under 254 nm UV-vis lamp. Moreover, RhB@ZrT-1-OH also can be utilized as a "turn-on" fluorescence sensor to recognize Gly with a low LOD of 0.3747 μM and exhibits fluorescence color changes from orange to pink to purple. Notably, the corresponding test papers for sensing MG and Gly were designed for recognize the concentration of MG and Gly. Furthermore, the dual-emission fluorescence sensor can be used to detect MG and Gly in fish and human serum with high sensitivity and reliable. The possible detecting mechanisms of RhB@ZrT-1-OH for sensing MG and Gly were detailedly explored.

Construction of hydrophilic hypercrosslinked polymer based on natural kaempferol for highly effective extraction of 5-nitroimidazoles in environmental water, honey and fish samples

A series of novel hydroxyl-functional hypercrosslinked polymers (named as HCPs-Kae) were fabricated using natural and environmentally benign kaempferol as monomer via one-step Friedel-Crafts reaction. The prepared HCP-Kae1-24 h exhibited large surface area, good hydrophilicity and excellent adsorption performance to 5-nitroimidazoles (5-NDZs). Thus, by applying HCP-Kae1-24 h as a solid-phase extraction adsorbent, a sensitive method was developed for enrichment of 5-NDZs including metronidazole, ronidazole, secnidazole, dimetridazole and ornidazole prior to high performance liquid chromatography analysis. Under the optimum conditions, good linearities were achieved in the range of 0.10-100.0 ng mL^-1 for water, 1.3-500.0 ng g^-1 for honey, and 1.7-100.0 ng g^-1 for fish meat. The detection limits of the method were 0.03-0.05 ng mL^-1, 0.4-1.0 ng g^-1, 0.5-1.0 ng g^-1 for water, honey and fish meat, respectively. High method recovery was obtained in the range of 84-118% with relative standard deviations lower than 8.9%. The established method was successfully applied to the detection of 5-NDZs in environmental water, honey and fish samples. This work provides a new strategy for constructing hydroxyl-functional HCPs by using natural resource as robust adsorbent for adsorption/extraction applications.

Metal-organic frameworks for food applications: A review

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are high surface-to-volume ratio crystalline hybrid porous coordination materials composed of metal ions as nodes and organic linkers. The goal of this paper was to provide an updated and comprehensive state-of-the-art review of MOFs for different food applications such as active food contact materials, antimicrobial nanocarriers, controlled release nanosystems for active compounds, nanofillers for food packaging materials, food nanoreactors, food substance nanosensors, stabilizers and immobilizers for active compounds and enzymes, and extractors of food contaminants. Extraction and sensing of several food contaminants have been the main food applications of MOFs. The other applications listed above require further investigation, as they are at an early stage. However, interesting results are being reported for these other fields. Finally, an important limitation of MOFs has been the use of non-renewable feedstocks for their synthesis, but this has recently been solved through the manufacture and use of γ-cyclodextrin-based MOFs.

Synthesis of Magnetic Metal-Organic Frame Material and Its Application in Food Sample Preparation

A variety of contaminants in food is an important aspect affecting food safety. Due to the presence of its trace amounts and the complexity of food matrix, it is very difficult to effectively separate and accurately detect them. The magnetic metal-organic framework (MMOF) composites with different structures and functions provide a new choice for the purification of food matrix and enrichment of trace targets, thus providing a new direction for the development of new technologies in food safety detection with high sensitivity and efficiency. The MOF materials composed of inorganic subunits and organic ligands have the advantages of regular pore structure, large specific surface area and good stability, which have been thoroughly studied in the pretreatment of complex food samples. MMOF materials combined different MOF materials with various magnetic nanoparticles, adding magnetic characteristics to the advantages of MOF materials, which are in terms of material selectivity, biocompatibility, easy operation and repeatability. Combined with solid phase extraction (SPE) technique, MMOF materials have been widely used in the food pretreatment. This article introduced the new preparation strategies of different MMOF materials, systematically summarizes their applications as SPE adsorbents in the pretreatment of food contaminants and analyzes and prospects their future application prospects and development directions.

Direct extraction and detection of malachite green from marine sediments by magnetic nano-sized imprinted polymer coupled with spectrophotometric analysis

This research describes the application of magnetic molecularly imprinted nano-sized polymers (MMIPs) for the selective extraction and fast detection of malachite green (MG) from marine sediment samples followed by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The novel material was prepared by surface imprinting using methacrylic acid as the functional monomer for fixing the template molecules. The polymers obtained at each step were thoroughly studied by transmission electron microscopy, FTIR spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Simultaneously, the adsorption performances of the resulting nanoparticles were analysed in detail and an excellent affinity with the MG was revealed. Further, the main parameters of magnetic molecular imprinted solid-phase extraction (MMIP-SPE) were screened via multivariate optimization methods. The magnetic nanoparticles were used as special adsorbents to directly extract MG from crude marine sediment extracts. The developed method exhibits satisfactory recoveries from the spiked samples, ranging from 80.40 to 92.96% with an RSD of less than 5.18% (n = 3).

Synthesis of metal-organic framework-5@chitosan material for the analysis of microcystins and nodularin based on ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

Microcystins (MCs) and nodularin (NOD) are tumor promoters produced by cyanobacteria and present in surface water. In this work, a novel mesoporous metal-organic framework-5@chitosan (MOF-5@CS) material was synthesized and applied for the enrichment of MCs and NOD in water and fish samples. The mesoporous MOF-5@CS material was firstly synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method, and the chitosan was combined with MOF-5 via chemical bonding assembly. As a new adsorbent, the as-synthesized material was found having a large specific surface area and good thermal stability. Under the optimized conditions, MCs and NOD were enriched by the MOF-5@CS material and detected by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The limit of detection of the new method for MCs and NOD were in the range of 0.0018-0.077 ng/mL. The value of relative standard deviation for repeatability were 2.69-6.30%, and the recovery of the analytes ranged from 84.36% to 118.51%. Compared with other reported method for MCs and NOD detection in complex matrices, better adsorption performance for MCs and NOD were obtained by our new method, and the sensitivity of MCs-RR and NOD were improved nearly 20 times and 30 times, respectively.

Novel Approaches Utilizing Metal-Organic Framework Composites for the Extraction of Organic Compounds and Metal Traces from Fish and Seafood

The determination of organic and inorganic pollutants in fish samples is a complex and demanding process, due to their high protein and fat content. Various novel sorbents including graphene, graphene oxide, molecular imprinted polymers, carbon nanotubes and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been reported for the extraction and preconcentration of a wide range of contaminants from fish tissue. MOFs are crystalline porous materials that are composed of metal ions or clusters coordinated with organic linkers. Those materials exhibit extraordinary properties including high surface area, tunable pore size as well as good thermal and chemical stability. Therefore, metal-organic frameworks have been recently used in many fields of analytical chemistry including sample pretreatment, fabrication of stationary phases and chiral separations. Various MOFs, and especially their composites or hybrids, have been successfully utilized for the sample preparation of fish samples for the determination of organic (i.e., antibiotics, antimicrobial compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, etc.) and inorganic pollutants (i.e., mercury, palladium, cadmium, lead, etc.) as such or after functionalization with organic compounds.

Temperature and magnetic dual responsive restricted access material for the extraction of malachite green from crucian and shrimp samples

A restricted access material that does not need organic solvents during elution was prepared for the extraction of malachite green.

Magnetic aluminum-based metal organic framework as a novel magnetic adsorbent for the effective removal of minocycline from aqueous solutions

In this paper, Fe₃O₄@MIL-68 (Al), a magnetic aluminum-based metal organic framework, was synthesized by a simple method and used as a novel and effective adsorbent for the removal of minocycline (MC) from aqueous solutions. The material was thoroughly characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and N₂ adsorption isotherms. The characterization results showed that the original structure of MIL-68(Al) was unchanged by the addition of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles, and that the obtained material had a strong magnetic response which also promoted its adsorption. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted by the varying the adsorption time, temperature, initial MC concentration and pH. The maximum adsorption amount of MC onto Fe₃O₄@MIL-68 (Al) was 248.05 mg g^-1 (t = 160 min, pH = 6, C_o = 60 mg L^-1), and the adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption isotherms conformed to the Freundlich equation. The adsorption mechanism of the magnetic metal organic framework materials were determined to involve complex interactions, including Al-N and Fe-N covalent bonds, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic adsorption, and π-π stacking. Combined the results indicate that Fe₃O₄@MIL-68 (Al) is an outstanding adsorbent for the removal of MC from water.

Metal-Organic Frameworks for Food Safety

Food safety is a prevalent concern around the world. As such, detection, removal, and control of risks and hazardous substances present from harvest to consumption will always be necessary. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a class of functional materials, possess unique physical and chemical properties, demonstrating promise in food safety applications. In this review, the synthesis and porosity of MOFs are first introduced by some representative examples that pertain to the field of food safety. Following that, the application of MOFs and MOF-based materials in food safety monitoring, food processing, covering preservation, sanitation, and packaging is overviewed. Future perspectives, as well as potential opportunities and challenges faced by MOFs in this field will also be discussed. This review aims to promote the development and progress of MOF chemistry and application research in the field of food safety, potentially leading to novel solutions.

Fabrication of Carboxymethylcellulose/Metal-Organic Framework Beads for Removal of Pb(II) from Aqueous Solution

The ability to remove toxic heavy metals, such as Pb(II), from the environment is an important objective from both human-health and ecological perspectives. Herein, we describe the fabrication of a novel carboxymethylcellulose-coated metal organic material (MOF-5⁻CMC) adsorbent that removed lead ions from aqueous solutions. The adsorption material was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We studied the functions of the contact time, pH, the original concentration of the Pb(II) solution, and adsorption temperature on adsorption capacity. MOF-5⁻CMC beads exhibit good adsorption performance; the maximum adsorption capacity obtained from the Langmuir isotherm-model is 322.58 mg/g, and the adsorption equilibrium was reached in 120 min at a concentration of 300 mg/L. The adsorption kinetics is well described by pseudo-second-order kinetics, and the adsorption equilibrium data are well fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model (R² = 0.988). Thermodynamics experiments indicate that the adsorption process is both spontaneous and endothermic. In addition, the adsorbent is reusable. We conclude that MOF-5⁻CMC is a good adsorbent that can be used to remove Pb(II) from aqueous solutions.

Application of magnetized MOF-74 to phthalate esters extraction from Chinese liquor

In this study, magnetized MOF-74 (Ni) was prepared using an ultrasound-assisted synthesis method. This novel functional magnetic adsorbent was characterized using various techniques. Using the prepared material as adsorbents, a magnetic solid-phase extraction method coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography was proposed for determining four phthalate esters in Chinese liquor samples. The extraction parameters, including solution pH, adsorbent amount, extraction time, and eluent type and volume, were optimized. Under the optimized conditions, proposed method showed good linearity within the range of 1.53-200 μg/L for diphenyl phthalate, 2.03-200 μg/L for butyl benzyl phthalate, 7.02-200 μg/L for diamyl phthalate, and 6.03-200 μg/L for dicyclohexyl phthalate, with correlation coefficients > 0.9944, low limits of detection (0.46-2.10 μg/L, S/N = 3), and good extraction repeatability (relative standard deviations of 3.7%, n = 6). This method was successfully used to analyze phthalate esters in Chinese liquor samples with recoveries of 74.4-104.8%. Two phthalate esters were detected in two samples, both at concentrations that satisfied the Chinese national standard, indicating this method has practical application prospects. The extraction efficiency of this method was also compared with conventional solid-phase extraction using commercial C₁₈ cartridges. The results demonstrated that the proposed magnetic solid-phase extraction is a simple, time-saving, efficient, and low-cost method.

Applications of Metal-Organic Frameworks in Food Sample Preparation

Food samples such as milk, beverages, meat and chicken products, fish, etc. are complex and demanding matrices. Various novel materials such as molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs), carbon-based nanomaterials carbon nanotubes, graphene oxide and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been recently introduced in sample preparation to improve clean up as well as to achieve better recoveries, all complying with green analytical chemistry demands. Metal-organic frameworks are hybrid organic inorganic materials, which have been used for gas storage, separation, catalysis and drug delivery. The last few years MOFs have been used for sample preparation of pharmaceutical, environmental samples and food matrices. Due to their high surface area MOFs can be used as adsorbents for the development of sample preparation techniques of food matrices prior to their analysis with chromatographic and spectrometric techniques with great performance characteristics.
