Applications of metal organic frameworks in dispersive micro solid phase extraction (D-μ-SPE)

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a fascinating family of crystalline porous materials made up of metal clusters and organic linkers. In comparison with other porous materials, MOFs have unique characteristics including high surface area, homogeneous open cavities, and permanent high porosity with variable shapes and sizes. For these reasons, MOFs have recently been explored as sorbents in sample preparation by solid-phase extraction (SPE). However, SPE requires large amounts of sorbents and suffers from limited contact surfaces with analytes, which compromises extraction recovery and efficiency. Dispersive SPE (D-SPE) overcomes these limitations by dispersing the sorbents into the sample, which in turn increases contact with the analytes. Miniaturization of the microextraction procedure, particularly the amount of sorbent reduces the amount consumed of the organic solvent and shorten the time required to attain the equilibrium state. This may explain the reported high efficiency and applicability of MOFs in dispersive micro SPE (D-µ-SPE). This method retains all the advantages of solid phase extraction while also being simpler, faster, cheaper, and, in some cases, more effective in comparison with D-SPE. Besides, D-µ-SPE requires smaller amounts of the sorbents which reduces the overall cost, and the amount of waste generated from the analytical process. In this review, we discuss the applications of MOFs in D-µ-SPE of various analytes including pharmaceuticals, pesticides, organic dyes from miscellaneous matrices including water samples, biological samples and food samples.

Rapid and sensitive determination of legacy and emerging per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances with solid-phase microextraction probe coupled with mass spectrometry

This study was designed to develop a rapid and sensitive method for quantifying legacy and emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in environmental samples with solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS). An innovative SPME probe was fabricated via in situ polymerization, and the probe coating was optimized with response surface methodology to maximize the fluorine-fluorine interactions and electrostatic properties and ensure high selectivity for the target PFASs with enrichment factors of 48-491. The coupled SPME and MS provided a rapid and sensitive method for analyses of PFASs, with excellent linearity (r ≥ 0.9962) over the concentration range 0.001-1 μg/L and remarkably low detection limits of 0.1-13.0 ng/L. This method was used to analyze trace PFASs in tap water, river water, and wastewater samples and proved to be a simple and efficient analytical method for selective enrichment and detection of contaminants in the environment.

Fabrication of molecularly imprinted carbon nanotubes integrating ionic liquids for efficient detection of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acid in environmental water

It is extremely significant while challenging to accurately detect low-levels of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acid compounds (PFCAs) in environmental water. Herein, adopting perfluorotetradecanoic acid as the dummy template, selective molecularly imprinted composites (CNTs@ILs@MIPs) grafted carbon nanotubes integrating hydrophilic ionic liquids were successfully prepared via surface imprinting and dummy-template imprinting techniques. The obtained CNTs@ILs@MIPs were applied as selective extraction adsorbent for specifically extract PFCAs in environmental water coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry quantification. Detailed studies were conducted on the main preparation parameters and extraction conditions. The CNTs@ILs@MIPs displayed excellent adsorptivity, and the established method exhibited low LODs (0.60-1.64 ng L-1), wide linearity with R2 above 0.9994, and satisfactory adsorption recoveries (80.5-112.5%) for seven PFCAs. This proposed method provides a new applicable approach for the detection of targeted pollutants in environmental water by utilizing the high affinity and recognition ability of molecularly imprinted carbon nanotube functional materials modified with ionic liquids.

Application of magnetic carbon nanotube composite nanospheres in magnetic solid-phase extraction of trace perfluoroalkyl substances from environmental water samples

The layer-by-layer assembly technique was used to synthesize novel multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on magnetic carbon (Fe₃O₄@C) nanospheres, which were then used to extract six perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in environmental real water samples using ultra high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry. The as-synthesized sorbent MWCNTs@Fe₃O₄@C was employed for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE). The as-prepared MWCNTs@Fe₃O₄@C was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The main extraction parameters were systematically optimized by Box-Behnken design. Under optimal conditions, excellent results were achieved. The synthesized sorbent showed wide linear ranges (0.1-1000 ng L^-1), low detection limits (0.03-0.09 ng L^-1) and good repeatability (3.80%-9.52%) for extracting and detecting six PFAS. The developed method was also applied to analyze six PFAS from environmental water samples. This study indicated that MWCNTs@Fe₃O₄@C composites are promising materials for the extraction and determination of PFAS from water samples.

Determination of anionic perfluorinated compounds in water samples using cationic fluorinated metal organic framework membrane coupled with UHPLC-MS/MS

Global concerns stem from the environmental crisis have compelled researchers to develop selective and sensitive methods for the identification and measurement of emerging pollutants in the environmental matrices. The cationic F-TMU-66⁺Cl^-/polyvinylidene fluoride metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) mixed matrix membrane (F-TMU-66⁺Cl^-/PVDF MMM) was synthesized and used as a versatile adsorbent with multiple binding sites for the simultaneous extraction of twelve anionic perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) from reservoir water samples. The physical and chemical characteristics of the materials, as well as adsorption mechanism were fully surveyed by various instrumental techniques. Important extraction parameters, including amount of MOFs, pH, desorption conditions, and salinity were systematically investigated and optimized. The combination of dispersive membrane solid extraction based on F-TMU-66⁺Cl^-/PVDF MMM with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry provided ultra-low limit of detections within the range of 0.03-0.48 ng/L. By virtue of the simplicity and robustness of the extraction procedure, high sensitivity of detection scheme, good stability and selectivity of the F-TMU-66⁺Cl^-/PVDF MMM, the developed method exhibits excellent practicability for ultra-trace analysis of anionic PFCs in water samples.

Strategic combination of metal-organic frameworks and C3N4 for expeditious photocatalytic degradation of dye pollutants

The potential of fabricated silver and bismuth Co-N-doped imidazolate embedded into graphitic nitride BiO-Ag(0)/C₃N₄@ZIF-67 for the degradation of Methylene blue (MB) and Congo red (CR) dyes have been reported. The synthesized materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The band gaps of ZIF-67, C₃N₄ and composites were calculated using Tauc plot. Besides, it was revealed that incorporation of silver, bismuth, and C₃N₄ reduced the band gap energy to 2.2 eV. The introduction of metallic species in the precursors promoted better charge separation behavior towards photogenerated electron and hole in the heterojunction composite. Two perilous organic dyes; MB and CR were degraded under natural sunlight irradiation. The photocatalytic efficiency of BiO-Ag(0)/C₃N₄@ZIF-67 for the removal of CR and MB significantly increased compared to bare ZIF-67. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of BiO-Ag(0)/C₃N₄@ZIF-67 is attributed to the higher surface area and Plasmon effect of noble silver metal. The solar light-triggered degradation of MB and CR yielded efficient efficiency of 96.5 and 90% for 10 mg/L of dye solution each. Additionally, the effect of pH was evaluated for optimizing degradation of CR and MB dyes. The kinetics studies of both CR and MB were clarified according to Langmuir model. The reusability and quenching investigation of active species were carried out to discover find catalytic potential of the composite. Besides, possible dye degradation mechanism was proposed for BiO-Ag(0)/C₃N₄@ZIF-67. The obtained results indicated that solar-light triggered photocatalyst BiO-Ag(0)/C₃N₄@ZIF-67 can be employed as a promising approach for photocatalytic elimination of organic pollutants.

Ionic covalent organic frameworks for the magnetic solid-phase extraction of perfluorinated compounds in environmental water samples

A novel magnetic ionic covalent organic framework (Fe₃O₄@EB-iCOFs) was designed and synthesized. It was then characterized by X-ray diffraction, N₂ adsorption-desorption analysis, and magnetic measurements, among others. The material shows the advantages of ionic property, large surface area, and magnetic responsiveness. It has potential of magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of perfluorinated compounds (PFCs). A method for the determination of PFCs based on MSPE-HPLC-MS/MS was established. The method has excellent linearity (r ≥ 0.995) in the working range 1-1000 ng L^-1 , good repeatability (1.4-5.8%, n = 6), low limits of detection in the range 0.1-0.8 ng L^-1 and satisfactory recoveries (between 73.9 and 108.3%).

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks in analytical sample preparation

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks are a class of metal-organic frameworks that are topologically isomorphic with zeolites. Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks are composed of tetrahedrally coordinated metal ions connected by imidazolate linkers and have a high porosity and chemical stability. Here, we summarize the progress made in the application of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks in sample preparation for analytical purposes. This review is focused on analytical methods based on liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, or capillary electrophoresis, where the use of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks has contributed to increasing the sensitivity and selectivity of the method. While bulk zeolitic imidazolate frameworks have been directly used in analytical sample preparation protocols, a variety of strategies for their magnetization or their incorporation into sorbent particles, monoliths, fibers, stir bars, or thin films, have been developed. These modifications have facilitated the handling and application of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks for a number of analytical sample treatments including magnetic solid-phase extraction, solid-phase microextraction, stir bar sorptive extraction, or thin film microextraction, among other techniques.

Ionic liquid induced highly dense assembly of porphyrin in MOF nanosheets for photodynamic therapy

A facile fabrication of porphyrin-integrated MOF nanosheets as efficient photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy (PDT) is presented.
