Development of magnetic solid phase extraction using magnetic amphiphilic polymer for sensitive analysis of multi-pesticides residue in honey

Synthesis of green nanosorbent from bovine serum albumin and curcumin for magnetic solid phase extraction of pesticides from food samples

For the first time, a magnetic carbon nanocomposite was synthesized using one-step hydrothermal procedure, employing bovine serum albumin, curcumin, and ferric ammonium citrate. Additionally, the application of this novel composite as an adsorbent for magnetic dispersive solid phase extraction of fungicides and pesticides from water and food samples is a unique aspect of this study. Under optimum conditions (salt concentration: 5.0% w/v, pH: 7.0, desorption solvent: ethanol, sorbent amount: 20 mg, extraction time: 20 min, desorption time: 3 min, stirring rate: 500 rpm, sample volume: 30 mL, extraction temperature: room temperature, and desorption solvent volume: 150 μL) linearity (2.5 to 1400 ng mL-1), coefficients of determination (R2 ≥ 0.997), limits of detection (0.75 to 1.5 ng mL-1), and limits of quantification (2.5 to 5.0 ng mL-1) were achieved. The method validation results showed extraction recovery ranging from 71.2% to 93.4%, and preconcentration factors ranging from 142.5 to 186.1.

Determination of twelve neonicotinoid pesticides in chili using an improved QuEChERS method with UPLC-Q-TOF/MS

In this study, a QuEChERS method based on citrate was developed and utilized for the analysis of twelve neonicotinoid pesticides in fresh red chilies, fresh green chilies, and dried chilies, coupled with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF/MS). In the sample preparation, acetonitrile containing 1% formic acid was used as the extraction solvent. Anhydrous sodium sulfate replaced the traditional anhydrous magnesium sulfate for water removal, effectively eliminating the issues of salt caking. Graphitized carbon black, octadecyl silica, and primary secondary amine were used as cleaning agents. The method showed good sensitivity, with the limits of quantification below 0.03 mg/kg for fresh chilies and below 0.15 mg/kg for dried chilies. Values of matrix effects ranged from -19.5% to 8.4%, and the recovery was 86.9% - 105.2%. The analytical method provided an effective tool for the high throughput detection of neonicotinoid pesticide residues in multiple chili matrices.

A convenient and effective method for determining organophosphorus pesticides in citrus fruits based on a novel dispersive solid phase extraction using UiO-66/Alg bead as the sorbent

This work presents a novel, convenient and effective method for assaying organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) in the pulp and peel of citrus fruits. In this method, shaped UiO-66/alginate (UiO-66/Alg) beads were employed to replace the powder sorbents used in traditional dispersive solid phase extraction (d-SPE) methods. The UiO-66/Alg beads can be easily separated by only using a tweezer within 1 min, which effectively simplifies the sample pretreatment and overcomes the shortages brought by the incomplete separation of powder sorbents. Moreover, the matrix compounds can be effectively excluded by UiO-66/Alg beads, and the UiO-66/Alg beads can be reused at least 8 times. The d-SPE conditions were optimized by a single factor test. The method shows satisfactory sensitivity, accuracy and precision. Furthermore, ATR-FTIR and UV-Vis-DRS were employed to investigate the adsorption mechanism. Finally, the developed method was applied to monitor the OPPs in ten different citrus fruits.

Fabrication of poly-dopamine-modified magnetic nanomaterial and development of integrated QuEChERS method for 122 pesticides residue analysis in fruits

A rapid and accurate integrated QuEChERS method was established for the determination of multi-pesticide residues in fruits. Poly-dopamine-modified magnetic nanomaterial (Fe3O4-pDA) was homemade and characterized. The prepared Fe3O4-pDA has the functional group of absorbing the saccharides, and can be used as co-adsorbent with 3-(N, n‑diethyl amino) propyl trimethoxy-silane (PSA) in the developed integrated QuEChERS method to purify the fruit matrix, thus achieve the accurate determination of multi-pesticides residue. Grape was used as the representative sample to explore the influence of the salting out agent and each purification adsorbent on the pesticide recoveries. Under the optimized conditions, the proposed method showed good linearity for 92.6% of pesticides in the concentration range of 1-150 μg L-1 with method limit of quantitative (mLOQs) ranged from 10 to 18 μg kg-1. Spiked recoveries experiments were performed on four kinds of grapes and other fruits (apple, watermelon, pear, jujube and peach), in which satisfactory recoveries and precision were obtained for most of the pesticides. Meanwhile, comparison experiments also verified this method was superior to the traditional QuEChERS method in terms of convenient operation, high efficiency and low reagent consumption. The further real sample analysis was performed using this method, and the overall detection rate was 52%, while 2% of samples were exceeding the maximum residue limits. All results confirmed that the proposed method could be used for the rapid, simple, low-costing and effective analyses of trace multi-pesticides residue in fruit samples.

An alginate-based eutectogel impregnated with polyvinylpyrrolidone/benzoic acid deep eutectic solvent and magnetic carboxylated multiwalled carbon nanotubes: Evaluated as sorbent in green microextraction of pesticides

This article presents the synthesis and application of a novel magnetic eutectogel constituting a polymeric deep eutectic solvent (PDES), carboxylated multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT-COOH), and super-dispersible/super-paramagnetic polyvinylpyrrolidone coated-Fe3O4 nanocrystals incorporated in alginate gel. Different methods were used for the characterization of novel polymeric based DES gel including FT-NMR, ATR-FTIR, and SEM were used. The novel DES eutectogel was used for the extraction of pesticides from honey. The modified eutectogel with PDES, MWCNT, and PDES-MWCNT showed 1.8-, 1.4-, and 2.5-fold enhancement in the sorption efficiency under green magnetic micro-solid-phase extraction (MSPE) method before GC-MS analysis. Important factors including the acidity of the samples, adsorption and desorption conditions, and the ionic strength of the preparation solution were investigated. The matrix effect, specificity, the quantification limits (0.023-1.023 μg kg-1), linear dynamic range (0.023-500 µg kg-1 with R2 of 0.9845-0.9986), relative standard deviations (<8.4%), were evaluated. In addition, the method was used to analyze 12 pesticides in four samples of honey. In the spiked concentration range of 0.1 to 10 μg kg-, the obtained recoveries were between 73.2 and 110.8% (RSD% = 8.1%, n = 3).

Simultaneous determination of the nematicide fluensulfone and its two major metabolites in soils by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

A fast and sensitive method for simultaneously detecting nonfumigant nematicide fluensulfone (FSF) and its two major metabolites [3,4,4-trifluorobut-3-ene-1-sulfonic acid (BSA) and 5‑chloro-1,3-thiazole-2-sulfonic acid (TSA)] in different types of agricultural soils (black soil, krasnozem, sierozem) was established and validated through ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The samples were prepared by a modified quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe method. The soil samples were firstly extracted with acetonitrile/water (4/1) and then purified with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Parameters influencing purification efficiency and recoveries, such as the type and the amount of sorbent were evaluated and compared. The overall average recoveries of three target analytes in soils were in the range of 73.1%-113.9% and the relative standard deviations (including intra-day and inter-day precision) were less than 12.7%. The limit of quantification was 5 μg/kg for all three compounds. The established method was successfully applied to examine the degradation of FSF and the formation of its two major metabolites in three different types of soil, indicating its efficacy in investigating the environmental behavior of FSF in agricultural soil system.

Recent advances in development of functional magnetic adsorbents for selective separation of proteins/peptides

Nowadays, proteins separation has attracted great attention in proteomics research. Because the proteins separation is helpful for making an early diagnosis of many diseases. Magnetic nanoparticles are an interesting and useful functional material, and have attracted extensive research interest during the past decades. Because of the excellent properties such as easy surface functionalization, tunable biocompatibility, high saturation magnetization etc, magnetic microspheres have been widely used in isolation of proteins/peptides. Notably, with the rapid development of surface decoration strategies, more and more functional magnetic adsorbents have been designed and fabricated to meet the growing demands of biological separation. In this review, we have collected recent information about magnetic adsorbents applications in selective separation of proteins/peptides. Furthermore, we present a comprehensive prospects and challenges in the field of protein separation relying on magnetic nanoparticles.

Magnetic Composite Based on Carbon Nanotubes and Deep Eutectic Solvents: Preparation and Its Application for the Determination of Pyrethroids in Tea Drinks

In this study, a novel composite material prepared by using deep eutectic solvent (tetrabutylammonium chloride-dodecanol, DES₅) functionalized magnetic MWCNTs-ZIF-8 (MM/ZIF-8@DES₅) was employed as an adsorbent for the magnetic solid-phase extraction of six pyrethroids from tea drinks. The characterization results show that MM/ZIF-8@DES₅ possessed sufficient specific surface area and superparamagnetism, which could facilitate the rapid enrichment of pyrethroids from tea drink samples. The results of the optimization experiment indicated that DES₅, which comprised tetrabutylammonium chloride and 1-dodecanol, was selected for the next experiment and that the adsorption properties of MM/ZIF-8@DES₅ were higher than those of MM/ZIF-8 and M-MWCNTs. The validation results show that the method has a wide linear range (0.5-400 μg L^-1, R² ≥ 0.9905), low LOD (0.08-0.33 μg L^-1), and good precision (intra-day RSD ≤ 5.6%, inter-day RSD ≤ 8.6%). The method was successfully applied to the determination of pyrethroids in three tea drink samples.

Synthesis of nitrogen-rich magnetic hypercrosslinked polymer as robust adsorbent for the detection of neonicotinoids in honey, tomatoes, lettuce and Chinese cabbage

In this study, a novel nitrogen-rich magnetic hypercrosslinked polymer (Fe3O4@Ph-HCP) was fabricated via a facile one-pot reaction of 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene, 2,4-dichloropyrimidine and phenyl-functionalized magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The Fe3O4@Ph-HCP possessed high specific surface, abundant nanopores and good stability. Especially, Fe3O4@Ph-HCP exhibited excellent adsorption capability with fast adsorption rate to neonicotinoid insecticides. It was applied as a superior magnetic adsorbent for rapid enrichment and isolation of four neonicotinoid insecticides (thiamethoxam, imidacloprid, acetamiprid and thiacloprid) from honey, tomato, lettuce and Chinese cabbage samples prior to high performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection. Under the optimized conditions, the good linearity was obtained in the range of 1-1000 ng g-1 for honey, tomato, lettuce and Chinese cabbage samples, and the detection limits (S/N = 3) were 0.30-0.67 ng g-1 for honey, 1-1.5 ng g-1 for tomato, lettuce and Chinese cabbage. The spiked recoveries were 80.1-111%, and relative standard deviations were less than 10.0%. These results demonstrate that the developed method can be used as a good alternative method for sensitive determination of neonicotinoid insecticides in complex samples.
