Abstract
This work presents solution- and solid-state evidence of the enhancement of J-like aggregation of a cationic polythiophene (CPT) with isothiouronium functionalities (PT1), caused by a decrease in the polarity and hydrogen-bonding (H-bonding) capacity of the solvent, generated by using a 50:50 v/v 1,4-dioxane-water mixture (W-DI) instead of water. In solution, the presence of 1,4-dioxane (DI) seems to generate selective solvation, tuning the energy transfer within PT1 from inter-chain into intra-chain, enhancing J-like aggregation. On the other hand, during the casting process, the presence of DI directs the interaction with solid-substrates, generating an increase in the solid-state fluorescence, modifying the morphology from one similar to ballistic-aggregation (BA) into one similar to attachment limited aggregation (ALA), DI also modifies the SFE by increasing slightly its polar contribution (γSp) and decreasing the dispersive one (γSd). These results can be explained to be caused by a "coating" effect in presence of DI (as proposed before experimentally and computationally). Our results show a clear correlation between the solution- and solid-state properties of PT1 in each solvent, further validating the use of the fluorescence excitation spectra to trace J-like aggregation of water-soluble conjugated polymeric fluorophores in solution. This information could be useful for predicting and designing specific mesoscopic architectures of CPTs (and conjugated polyelectrolytes in general), which are molecules lacking of clear structure-function guidelines for designing high-performance polythiophene-based interlayer materials, especially for CPTs (and conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) in general), particularly those with H-bonding capabilities. To the best of our knowledge the use of solution-state fluorescence excitation spectra to identify J-like aggregation of water-soluble conjugated polymers (CPs) has been scarcely used/discussed in literature and no correlation with solid-state properties was reported previously.

Abstract
Aggregation of cationic isothiouronium polythiophenes with alkoxy-spacers of different lengths at the 3-position of the thiophene ring was studied in solvents of different polarities. Hydrogen-bonding capacity was assessed by steady-state absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, whereas the aggregation in aqueous solutions was studied by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, using paramagnetic probes of different polarities. The two polymers displayed similar features in respect to conformation, effect of cosolvents on aggregation, unstructured absorption-fluorescence spectra, Stokes shifts when aggregated, solvatochromic effect, and self-quenching concentration. However, these polymers also showed different specific interactions with water, Stokes shifts in water, effect of the solvent on the extent of dominant state of the S1 level, and also different inner cavities and hydrophobic-hydrophilic surface area in aqueous solution aggregates. Water maximized the difference between the polymers concerning the effect of specific increases in concentration, whereas the presence of 1,4-dioxane generated almost identical effects on both polymers.

Abstract
Polymerization via Suzuki coupling under microwave (µW) irradiation has been studied for the synthesis of poly{1,4-(2/3-aminobenzene)-alt-2,7-(9,9-dihexylfluorene)} (PAF), chosen as molecular model. Briefly, µW-assisted procedures accelerated by two orders of magnitude the time required when using classical polymerization processes, and the production yield was increased (>95%). In contrast, although the sizes of the polymers that were obtained by non-conventional heating reactions were reproducible and adequate for most applications, with this methodology the molecular weight of final polymers were not increased with respect to conventional heating. Asymmetric orientation of the amine group within the monomer and the assignments of each dyad or regioregularity, whose values ranged from 38% to 95% with this molecule, were analysed using common NMR spectroscopic data. Additionally, the synthesis of a new cationic polyelectrolyte, poly{1,4-(2/3-aminobenzene)-co-alt-2,7-[9,9´-bis(6''-N,N,N-trimethylammonium-hexyl)fluorene]} dibromide (PAFAm), from poly{1,4-(2/3-aminobenzene)-co-alt-2,7-[9,9´-bis(6''-bromohexyl)fluorene]} (PAFBr) by using previously optimized conditions for µW-assisted heating procedures was reported. Finally, the characterization of the final products from these batches showed unkown interesting solvatochromic properties of the PAF molecule. The study of the solvatochromism phenomena, which was investigated as a function of the polarity of the solvents, showed a well-defined Lippert correlation, indicating that the emission shift observed in PAF might be due to its interaction with surrounding environment. Proven high sensitivity to changes of its environment makes PAF a promising candidate of sensing applications.

Abstract
This work describes the development of a novel fluorescent biosensor based on the inhibition of alkaline phosphatase (ALP). The biosensor is composed of the enzyme ALP and the conjugated cationic polyfluorene HTMA-PFP. The working principle of the biosensor is based on the fluorescence quenching of this polyelectrolyte by p-nitrophenol (PNP), a product of the hydrolysis reaction of p-nitrophenyl phosphate (PNPP) catalyzed by ALP. Because HTMA-PFP forms unstable aggregates in buffer, with low fluorescence efficiency, previous stabilization of the polyelectrolyte was required before the development of the biosensor. HTMA-PFP was stabilized through its interaction with lipid vesicles to obtain stable blue-emitting nanoparticles (NPs). Fluorescent NPs were characterized, and the ability to be quenched by PNP was evaluated. These nanoparticles were coupled to ALP and entrapped in a sol-gel matrix to produce a biosensor that can serve as a screening platform to identify ALP inhibitors. The components of the biosensor were examined before and after sol-gel entrapment, and the biosensor was optimized to allow the determination of phosphate ion in aqueous medium.

Abstract
The design and development of fluorescent conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) emitting in the red region of the visible spectrum is at present of great interest for bioimaging studies. However, despite the wide variety of CPEs available, stable bright red-emitters remain scarce due to their low solubility and instability in aqueous media, consequently limiting their applications. In this work, we have synthesized and characterized a new red-emitting cationic conjugated polyelectrolyte copoly-{[9,9-bis(6'-N,N,N-trimethylammonium)hexyl]-2,7-(fluorene)-alt-1,4-(naphtho[2,3c]-1,2,5-thiadiazole)} bromide (HTMA-PFNT), based on the incorporation of naphtha[2,3c][1,2,5] thiadiazole on fluorene backbone to increase the bathochromic emission, extending the conjugation length in the polymer backbone. Water stabilization was achieved by binding the polyelectrolyte to two different biological systems which are currently used as nanocarriers: human serum albumin (HSA) and lipid vesicles. Using both systems, stable nanostructures of different composition were obtained and their properties were characterized. The properties of the protein-based nanoparticles are consistent with polyelectrolyte aggregates covered with HSA molecules, while the liposome system is composed of lipid vesicles coated with polyelectrolyte chains partially inserted in the bilayer. Both protein and vesicle structural integrity were not affected after their interaction with HTMA-PFNT, as well as the carrier properties, allowing for the binding and transport of ligands. In addition, the nanoparticles displayed the ability of labeling the cell membrane of living cells. All these results extend the potential applications of these novel multifunctional nanoparticles as therapeutic carriers and bioimaging probes.

Abstract
A perylene-functionalized polycation was synthesized by quaternization of poly(4-vinylpyridine) with bromomethyl-perylene and methyl iodide, which exhibited a unique aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect. The synthesized polycation and polyanion ssDNA could form a complex probe to detect DNA hybridization. Upon adding noncomplementary ssDNA, the fluorescence of the complex probe increased due to the AIE effect; upon adding complementary ssDNA, the fluorescence intensity changed little due to the combined effects of AIE and duplex-quenching resulting from the intercalation of perylene into the duplex.

Abstract
This paper explores the interaction mechanism between the conjugated polyelectrolyte {[9,9-bis(6'-N,N,N-trimethylammonium)hexyl]fluorene-phenylene}bromide (HTMA-PFP) and model lipid membranes. The study was carried out using different biophysical techniques, mainly fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy. Results show that despite the preferential interaction of HTMA-PFP with anionic lipids, HTMA-PFP shows affinity for zwitterionic lipids; although the interaction mechanism is different as well as HTMA-PFP's final membrane location. Whilst the polyelectrolyte is embedded within the lipid bilayer in the anionic membrane, it remains close to the surface, forming aggregates that are sensitive to the physical state of the lipid bilayer in the zwitterionic system. The different interaction mechanism is reflected in the polyelectrolyte fluorescence spectrum, since the maximum shifts to longer wavelengths in the zwitterionic system. The intrinsic fluorescence of HTMA-PFP was used to visualize the interaction between polymer and vesicles via fluorescence microscopy, thanks to its high quantum yield and photostability. This technique allows the selectivity of the polyelectrolyte and higher affinity for anionic membranes to be observed. The results confirmed the appropriateness of using HTMA-PFP as a membrane fluorescent marker and suggest that, given its different behaviour towards anionic and zwitterionic membranes, HTMA-PFP could be used for selective recognition and imaging of bacteria over mammalian cells.

Abstract
The amphiphilic properties of conjugated oligoelectrolytes (COE) and their sensitivity to the polarity of their microenvironment lead to interesting aggregation behavior, in particular in their interaction with surfactants. Photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, liquid-phase atomic force microscopy, small-angle neutron scattering, small-angle X-ray scattering, and grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction were used to examine interactions between cationic p-phenylene vinylene based oligoelectrolytes and surfactants. These techniques indicate the formation of COE/surfactant aggregates in aqueous solution, and changes in the photophysical properties are observed when compared to pure aqueous solutions. We evaluate the effect of the charge of the surfactant polar headgroup, the size of the hydrophobic chain, and the role of counterions. At low COE concentrations (micromolar), it was found that these COEs display larger emission quantum efficiencies upon incorporation into micelles, along with marked blue-shifts of the PL spectra. This effect is most pronounced in the series of anionic surfactants, and the degree of blue shifts as a function of surfactant charge is as follows: cationic < nonionic < anionic surfactants. In anionic surfactants, such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), the PL spectra show vibronic resolution above the critical micelle concentration of the surfactant, suggesting more rigid structures. Scattering data indicate that in aqueous solutions, trimers appear as essentially 3-dimensional particles, while tetra- and pentamers form larger, cylindrical particles. When the molar ratio of nonionic C12E5 surfactant to 1,4-bis(4-{N,N-bis-[(N,N,N-trimethylammonium)hexyl]amino}-styryl)benzene tetraiodide (DSBNI) is close to one, the size of the formed DSBNI-C12E5 particles corresponds to the full coverage of individual oligomers. When these particles are transferred into thin films, they organize into a cubic in-plane pattern. If anionic SDS is added, the formed DSBNI-SDS particles are larger than expected for full surfactant coverage, and particles may thus contain several oligomers. This tendency is attributed to the merging of DSBNI oligomers due to the charge screening and, thus, reduced water solubility.

Abstract
Interaction between poly[9,9-bis(6'-bromohexyl)-2,7-fluorene-co-alt-1,4-phenylene] (PFPBr2), a neutral conjugated polyfluorene which is completely insoluble in water, and zwitterionic phospholipids has been investigated in order to generate new fluorescent structures which are stable in aqueous media as a means of extending the biological applications of these kinds of polymers. Two types of differently shaped and composed fluorescent structures were identified and then isolated and characterized separately using different biophysical techniques. The first structure type, corresponding to liposomal complexes, showed a fluorescence band centered around 405 nm and maximum absorption at 345 nm, while the second, corresponding to polymer-phospholipid aggregates of variable sizes with lower lipid content, absorbed at longer wavelengths and displayed a well resolved fluorescence spectrum with a maximum centered at 424 nm. Both structures were stable in a large range of pH, and their fluorescence intensity remained practically unaltered for 10 days; it then began to decrease, which was probably because of aggregation. Encapsulation of these structures within the pores of a sol-gel matrix did not affect their fluorescent properties but increased their stability, avoiding further aggregation and subsequent precipitation.

Abstract
An anionic fluorene-phenylene poly{1,4-phenylene-[9,9-bis(4-phenoxy-butylsulfonate)]fluorene-2,7-diyl}-based copolymer containing on-chain perylenediimine (PDI) chromophoric units, PBS-PFP-PDI, was synthesized and its photophysical properties studied as aggregates and isolated chains in water and dioxane/water (1:1) solution. UV-vis and emission spectroscopy measurements, time-correlated single photon counting, and wide field imaging have been employed to investigate the excited-state behavior of the PBS-PFP-PDI copolymer, including the effect of environment on the energy and electron transfer to the on-chain PDI chromophore. Although the Förster overlap integral is favorable, no evidence is found for intramolecular singlet excitation energy transfer in isolated copolymer chains in solution. Fluorescence is suggested to involve an interchain process, thus revealing that isolated copolymer chains in solution do not undergo efficient intramolecular energy transfer. However, quenching of the PBS-PFP excited state by PDI is observed in aqueous media and ultrafast pump-probe studies in water or dioxane-water solutions show that electron transfer occurs from the phenylene-fluorene units to the PDI. The extent of electron transfer increases with aggregation, suggesting it is largely an interchain process. The interaction of the negatively charged PBS-PFP-PDI copolymer with the positively charged surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) in solution has also been studied. The copolymer PBS-PFP-PDI aggregates with the surfactant already at concentrations below the critical micelle concentration (cmc) and the nonpolar environment allows intermolecular energy transfer, observed by the weak emission band located at 630 nm that is associated with the emission of the PDI chromophore. However, the fact that the PDI photoluminescence (PL) lifetime (~1.4 ns) obtained in the presence of CTAB is considerably shorter than that of the nonaggregated chromophore (~5.4 ns) suggests that even in this case there is considerable PL quenching, possibly through some charge transfer route. The increase of the PBS-PFP-PDI photoluminescence intensity at surfactant concentrations above the cmc indicates deaggregation of polyelectrolyte within the initially formed polyelectrolyte-surfactant aggregates.

Abstract
The binding of cationic surfactants with varying alkyl chain length to a regiorandom conjugated polyanion, poly(3-thiophene acetic acid) (PTAA), is studied in an aqueous buffer by using absorption and emission spectroscopies, photon correlation spectroscopy, isothermal titration calorimetry, and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy. We study the mixed solutions as a function of composition ratio R of surfactant molecules to monomer units molar concentrations, at low polymer concentration and in a very wide composition range (10(-6) < R < 10(2)) below the critical micellar concentration. Upon surfactant binding, the molecularly dispersed chains first collapse progressively and then form new structures as the mixed aggregates get enriched in surfactant. The collapse leads to a strong decrease of the conjugation length and to a blue shift of the absorption spectra by 30 to 50 nm. The new structures are responsible for a new intense emission band at about 600 nm, red-shifted by nearly 130 nm from the initial emission maximum of the polymer (~472 nm). As the surfactant tail becomes shorter, the blue shift of the absorption spectra and the intensity raise of the new emission are delayed to larger composition ratios while their variations become smoother functions of the surfactant concentration. These particular spectroscopic properties of PTAA seem related to its unique combination of a strongly hydrophobic backbone, a large ratio of contour length to persistence length, and an overall good aqueous solubility. Our results show that such features are well suited to design a colorimetric biosensor at small composition ratio, and a fluorescent biomarker at large composition ratio.

Abstract
We report on the phase transitions, solution structure, and consequent effect on the photophysical properties of poly[3-(6-trimethylammoniumhexyl)thiophene] bromide (P3TMAHT) in aqueous sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS). Polythiophene was mixed with SDS or deuterated SDS to form P3TMAHT(SDS)(x) complex (x = the molar ratio of surfactant over monomer units) in D(2)O and studied by small-angle neutron and X-ray scattering (SANS/SAXS) and optical spectroscopy. At room temperature, P3TMAHT forms charged aggregates with interparticle order. The addition of SDS eliminates the interparticle order and leads to rod-like (x = 1/5) or sheet-like polymer-SDS aggregates (x = 1/2 to 1) containing rod-like (x = 1/5 to 1/2) or sheet-like (x = 1/2 to 1) polymer associations. Partial precipitation occurs at the charge compensation point (x = 1). Ellipsoidal particles without interparticle order, reminiscent of SDS micelles modified by separated polymer chains, occur for x = 2 to 5. Free SDS micelles dominate for x = 20. Structural transitions lead to a concomitant variation in the solution color from red (P3TMAHT) to violet (x = 1/5 to 1) to yellow (x > 2). The photoluminescence fingerprint changes progressively from a broad featureless band (x = 0) through the band narrowing and appearance of vibronic structure (x = 1/5 to 1) to the return to a blue-shifted broad emission band (x = 5). The polymer stiffness reaches a maximum for x = 1, which leads to minimization of the Stokes shift (0.08 eV). This work gives fundamental information upon how surfactant complexation can influence both the solution structure and photophysical properties of a water-soluble polythiophene.

Abstract
The competitive interaction has been studied between double-stranded DNA (dsDNA), the cationic conjugated polyelectrolyte (CPE) poly[9,9-bis(6-N,N,N-trimethylamonium)hexyl)-fluorene-phenylene)] bromide (HTMA-PFP) and anionic or neutral surfactants (sodium dodecyl sulfonate, SDSu, and n-dodecyl pentaoxyethylene glycol ether, C(12)E(5)) in 4% (v/v) dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-water using UV/visible absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. Dramatic changes are observed in the spectroscopic behavior of the system depending on the order of addition of the reagents, the surfactant charge, and concentration range. If the neutral C(12)E(5) is added to the HTMA-PFP/dsDNA complex, no significant spectroscopic changes are observed. However, if SDSu is added to the same complex, a dramatic increase of the absorbance and emission intensity is observed for surfactant concentrations above the critical micelle concentration (cmc). In contrast, if dsDNA is added to HTMA-PFP/surfactant systems (with surfactant concentrations above their cmc) no significant changes are observed with SDSu, while a dramatic quenching of polymer emission is observed with C(12)E(5), which can be explained quantitatively in terms of HTMA-PFP/surfactant/DNA complexation and the subsequent polymer aggregation upon charge neutralization. The results are compared with those for the binary systems (HTMA-PFP/DNA and HTMA-PFP/surfactants) and indicate the importance of electrostatic interactions between HTMA-PFP and oppositely charged species in the aggregation processes.
