Recent advancements in polyurethane-based membranes for gas separation

Gas separation membranes are critical in a variety of environmental research and industrial applications. These membranes are designed to selectively allow some gases to flow while blocking others, allowing for the separation and purification of gases for a variety of applications. Therefore, the demand for fast and energy-efficient gas separation techniques is of central interest for many chemical and energy production diligences due to the intensified levels of greenhouse and industrial gases. This encourages the researchers to innovate techniques for capturing and separating these gases, including membrane separation techniques. Polymeric membranes play a significant role in gas separations by capturing gases from the fuel combustion process, purifying chemical raw material used for plastic production, and isolating pure and noncombustible gases. Polyurethane-based membrane technology offers an excellent knack for gas separation applications and has also been considered more energy-efficient than conventional phase change separation methodologies. This review article reveals a thorough delineation of the current developments and efforts made for PU membranes. It further explains its uses for the separation of valuable gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrogen (H2), nitrogen (N2), methane (CH4), or a mixture of gases from a variety of gas spillages. Polyurethane (PU) is an excellent choice of material and a leading candidate for producing gas-separating membranes because of its outstanding chemical chemistry, good mechanical abilities, higher permeability, and variable microstructure. The presence of PU improves several characteristics of gas-separating membranes. Selectivity and separation efficiency of PU-centered membranes are enhanced through modifications such as blending with other polymers, use of nanoparticles (silica, metal oxides, alumina, zeolite), and interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) formation. This manuscript critically analyzes the various gas transport methods and selection criteria for the fabrication of PU membranes. It also covers the challenges facing the development of PU-membrane-based separation procedures.

The Study of Composite Materials Properties Based on Polymers and Nano-Additives from Industrial Wastes from Kazakhstan

This research is aimed at studying the properties of polymer anticorrosion coatings based on ED-20 resin widely used in practice and industrial wastes. In this work, three basic types of nanoscale nanofillers were chosen: dispersed particles-microsilica, microspheres obtained at Kazakh enterprises, and carbon nanotubes. Physicochemical research methods were used in the research: a laser analyzer for studying the dispersibility of industrial waste and spectrometric research methods. The properties of materials were investigated by standardized methods. The obtained results show that the introduction of microsilica and microspheres obtained at Kazakhstani enterprises, used as additives, improves both the physical and mechanical properties of epoxy composites compared to the standard (control) material. The results of experiments have shown that the optimal content of additives of microsilica and microspheres provides an improvement in the physical and mechanical properties of epoxy composites in comparison with the standard (control) material. Studies have shown that the introduction of microspheres into ED-20 polymer increases impact toughness. The introduction of microsilica into the matrix contributes to the increase of elastic modulus. Experimental studies of optical properties of samples of carbon composite polymer films based on polystyrene (PS) with additives of carbon nanotubes C60 and C70 and multilayer carbon nanotubes were also carried out. The experimental results obtained for the optical properties of polymer composites based on basic polymers from solid waste and carbon nanotubes showed that the optical properties of polymer composites undergo noticeable changes.

Fluorescent Nanocarbons: From Synthesis and Structure to Cancer Imaging and Therapy

Nanocarbons are emerging at the forefront of nanoscience, with diverse carbon nanoforms emerging over the past two decades. Early cancer diagnosis and therapy, driven by advanced chemistry techniques, play a pivotal role in mitigating mortality rates associated with cancer. Nanocarbons, with an attractive combination of well-defined architectures, biocompatibility, and nanoscale dimension, offer an incredibly versatile platform for cancer imaging and therapy. This paper aims to review the underlying principles regarding the controllable synthesis, fluorescence origins, cellular toxicity, and surface functionalization routes of several classes of nanocarbons: carbon nanodots, nanodiamonds, carbon nanoonions, and carbon nanohorns. This review also highlights recent breakthroughs regarding the green synthesis of different nanocarbons from renewable sources. It also presents a comprehensive and unified overview of the latest cancer-related applications of nanocarbons and how they can be designed to interface with biological systems and work as cancer diagnostics and therapeutic tools. The commercial status for large-scale manufacturing of nanocarbons is also presented. Finally, it proposes future research opportunities aimed at engendering modifiable and high-performance nanocarbons for emerging applications across medical industries. This work is envisioned as a cornerstone to guide interdisciplinary teams in crafting fluorescent nanocarbons with tailored attributes that can revolutionize cancer diagnostics and therapy.

Surface engineered nanodiamonds: mechanistic intervention in biomedical applications for diagnosis and treatment of cancer

In terms of biomedical tools, nanodiamonds (ND) are a more recent innovation. Their size typically ranges between 4 to 100 nm. ND are produced via a variety of methods and are known for their physical toughness, durability, and chemical stability. Studies have revealed that surface modifications and functionalization have a significant influence on the optical and electrical properties of the nanomaterial. Consequently, surface functional groups of NDs have applications in a variety of domains, including drug administration, gene delivery, immunotherapy for cancer treatment, and bio-imaging to diagnose cancer. Additionally, their biocompatibility is a critical requisite for theirin vivoandin vitrointerventions. This review delves into these aspects and focuses on the recent advances in surface modification strategies of NDs for various biomedical applications surrounding cancer diagnosis and treatment. Furthermore, the prognosis of its clinical translation has also been discussed.

Investigating the Structure and Properties of Epoxy Nanocomposites Containing Nanodiamonds Modified with Aminoacetic Acid

This paper presents a study on the prospects of functionalizing nanodiamonds (NDs) with aminoacetic acid to obtain high-strength composites based on an epoxy matrix. The impact of the functionalization of the ND surface with aminoacetic acid in various concentrations on the properties of the epoxy composite was assessed. The success of grafting amine onto the ND surface was confirmed by X-ray phase analysis and IR spectroscopy. The results show a significant decrease in the average size of ND particles, from 400 nm for the pristine ones to 35 nm, and the contact angle, from 27° to 22°, with an increase in the specific surface area after treatment with a 5% solution of aminoacetic acid. Reducing the average size of NDs allows them to be better distributed throughout the epoxy matrix, which, as a result of the formation of chemical interaction at the matrix-nanofiller phase interface, can significantly increase the strength of the obtained composite. The addition of NDs treated with aminoacetic acid ensures an increase in the deformation-strength properties of epoxy composites by 19-23% relative to an epoxy composite containing the pristine NDs. Moreover, the presence of functionalized NDs significantly influences the structure and thermal stability of the epoxy nanocomposite.

Eco-Friendly Fumed Nanosilica@Nanodiamond Hybrid Nanoparticles with Dual Sustainable Self-Healing and Barrier Anticorrosive Performances in Epoxy Coating

Fumed nanosilica@nanodiamond attached by APTES [(3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane], named FSiO2@sND, was examined as an efficient anticorrosive nanohybrid for epoxy coating. Compared with fumed nanosilica (FSiO2), nanodiamond (ND) moderated the hydrophilic nature of FSiO2@sND and offered additional functional groups to the nanohybrid, i.e., carboxylic groups of ND and functional groups of APTES, while retaining the eco-friendly nature of FSiO2 in the hybrid nanoparticle. The hybrid nanoparticle showed pH-sensitive release behavior in which APTES is released considerably in an alkaline medium, acting as an efficient corrosion inhibitor. A thorough electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) study of scratched coatings in a 3.5% NaCl solution disclosed that FSiO2@sND nanoparticles (at 0.33 wt % loading) conferred significant active/self-healing anticorrosion properties for the epoxy coatings, thanks to the release of APTES and the presence of carboxylic groups of ND taking part in forming a stable protective film on the substrate. Accordingly, epoxy/FSiO2@sND coatings showed a corrosion improvement efficiency of 138% at an optimum immersion time of 5 h, which was higher than the 96% improvement for epoxy/FSiO2 coating. Epoxy/FSiO2@sND intact coating showed much higher low-frequency impedance, i.e., 7.23 Ω·cm2, compared with epoxy/FSiO2 coating, i.e., 5.44 Ω·cm2, and neat epoxy coating, i.e., 5.71 Ω·cm2, after 22 weeks of immersion in salty solution. This result along with a detailed analysis of EIS data for intact coatings suggested that FSiO2@sND brought about strong barrier anticorrosive performance for epoxy coating. Such behavior was attributed to improved dispersion of nanohybrid in the epoxy matrix, enhanced cross-link density of the epoxy matrix, and improved coating/substrate adhesion caused by APTES and the carboxylic groups of ND.

Carbon-Based Nanomaterials Decorated Electrospun Nanofibers in Biosensors: A Review

Nanomaterials have revolutionized scientific research due to their exceptional physical and chemical capabilities. Carbon-based nanomaterials such as graphene and its derivates have excellent electrical, optical, thermal, physical, and chemical properties that have made them indispensable in several industries worldwide, including medicine, electronics, and energy. By incorporating carbon-based nanomaterials as nanofillers in electrospun nanofibers (ESNFs), smoother and highly conductive nanofibers can be achieved that possess a large surface area and porosity. This approach provides a superior alternative to traditional materials in the development of improved biosensors. Carbon-based ESNFs, among the most exciting new-generation materials, have many applications, including filtration, pharmaceuticals, biosensors, and membranes. The electrospinning technique is a highly efficient and cost-effective method for producing desired nanofibers compared to other methods. Various types of natural and synthetic organic polymers have been successfully utilized in solution electrospinning to produce nanofibers directly. To create diagnostics devices, various biomolecules like antibodies, enzymes, aptamers, ligands, and even cells can be bound to the surface of nanofibers. Electrospun nanofibers can serve as an immobilization matrix to create a biofunctional surface. Thus, biosensors with desired features can be produced in this way. This study comprehensively reviews biosensors that integrate nanodiamonds, fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, graphene oxide, and carbon dots into electrospun nanofibers.

Nanodiamond (ND)-Based ND@CuAl2O4@Fe3O4 electrochemical sensor for Tofacitinib detection: A unified approach to integrate experimental data with DFT and molecular docking

Tofacitinib (TOF) is gaining recognition as a potent therapeutic agent for a variety of autoimmune disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis. Ensuring precise drug concentration control during treatment necessitates a rapid and sensitive detection method. This study introduces a novel electrochemical sensor employing a composite of nanodiamond (ND), copper aluminate spinel oxide (CuAl2O4), and iron (II, III) oxide (Fe3O4) as modified materials for efficient TOF detection. Extensive analyses using physicochemical and electrochemical techniques were carried out to characterize the morphological, structural, and electrochemical properties of the ND@CuAl2O4@Fe3O4 composite. Thereafter, various voltammetric methods were utilized to evaluate the electrochemical behavior of the ND@CuAl2O4@Fe3O4-modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) concerning TOF determination. The fabricated electrode showcased superior performance in electrochemical TOF detection in a buffered solution (pH = 5), achieving a remarkably low detection limit of 7.8 nM and a linear response from 0.05 μM to 13.21 μM. Furthermore, applying the modified electrode as an electrochemical sensor exhibited exceptional selectivity, stability, and practicality in determining TOF in pharmaceutical and biological samples. Alongside the sensor development, this study conducted a thorough investigation using Density Functional Theory (DFT) for the geometry optimization of TOF and the TOF-ND complex. Consequently performed molecular docking studies using Janus Kinase 1 (JAK1) (PDB ID: 3EYG) and JAK3 (PDB ID: 3LXK) indicated higher interaction of the TOF-ND conjugate with the JAKs, reflected by binding energies of -12.9 kcal/mol and -11.7 kcal/mol for JAK1 and JAK3 respectively, compared to -7.0 kcal/mol and -6.9 kcal/mol for TOF alone. These findings illustrate the potential of the ND-based ND@CuAl2O4@Fe3O4 composite as a proficient sensing material for TOF detection and the merits of DFT in providing a detailed understanding of the interactions at play. This pioneering research holds promise for real-time TOF monitoring, which will advance personalized treatment strategies and improve therapeutic outcomes for patients with autoimmune disorders.

Fluorescent nanodiamonds as innovative delivery systems for MiR-34a replacement in breast cancer

Nanodiamonds are innovative nanocrystalline carbon particles able to deliver chemically conjugated miRNAs. In oncology, the use of miRNA-based therapies may represent an advantage, based on their ability to simultaneously target multiple intracellular oncogenic targets. Here, nanodiamonds were tested and optimized to deliver miR-34a, a miRNA playing a key role in inhibiting tumor development and progression in many cancers. The physical-chemical properties of nanodiamonds were investigated suggesting electrical stability and uniformity of structure and size. Moreover, we evaluated nanodiamond cytotoxicity on two breast cancer cell models and confirmed their excellent biocompatibility. Subsequently, nanodiamonds were conjugated with miR-34a, using the chemical crosslinker polyethyleneimine; real-time PCR analysis revealed a higher level of miR-34a in cancer cells treated with the different formulations of nanodiamonds than with commercial transfectant. A significant and early nanodiamond-miR-34a uptake was recorded by FACS and fluorescence microscopy analysis in MCF7 and MDA-MB-231 cells. Moreover, nanodiamond-miR-34a significantly inhibited both cell proliferation and migration. Finally, a remarkable anti-tumor effect of miR-34a-conjugated nanodiamonds was observed in both heterotopic and orthotopic murine xenograft models. In conclusion, this study provides a rationale for the development of new therapeutic strategies based on use of miR-34a delivered by nanodiamonds to improve the clinical treatment of neoplasms.

Changes in mechanical and bacterial properties of denture base resin following nanoceria incorporation with and without SBA-15 carriers

Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is a commonly used material for the fabrication of biomedical appliances. Although PMMA has several advantages, it is susceptible to microbial insults with practical use. Therefore, different bioactive nanomaterials, such as nanoceria (CeN), have been proposed to enhance the properties of PMMA. In this study, we investigated the effect of the incorporation of CeN into PMMA with and without the use of mesoporous silica nanoparticle (SBA-15) carriers. The unmodified PMMA specimens (control, CTRL) were compared to groups containing SBA-15, CeN, and the synthesized SBA-15 impregnated with CeN (SBA-15@CeN) at different loading percentages. The mechanical and physical properties of the different SBA-15@CeN groups and their effects on cell viability were investigated, and the optimal CeN concentration was identified accordingly. Our results revealed that flexural strength was significantly (P < 0.01) reduced in the SBA-15@CeN_3× group (containing 3-fold the CeN wt. %). Although the surface microhardness increased with the increase in the wt. % of SBA-15@CeN, cell viability was significantly reduced (P < 0.001). The SBA-15@CeN_1× group had the optimal concentration and displayed significant resistance to single-and multispecies microbial colonization. Finally, the enzymatic activity of CeN was significantly high in the SBA-15@CeN_1× group. The proinflammatory markers (IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α, CD80, and CD86) showed a significant (P < 0.001) multifold reduction in lipopolysaccharide-induced RAW cells treated with a 5-day eluate of the SBA-15@CeN_1× group. These results indicate that the addition of SBA-15@CeN at 1.5 wt % improves the biological response of PMMA without compromising its mechanical properties.

Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) and amino-functionalized nanodiamond bionanocomposites for bone tissue defect repair

Injection-molded nanocomposites of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBHV) with 6 % of 3-hydroxyvalerate (HV) and amino-nanodiamonds (nD-A) were produced and characterized to investigate the effect of functionalized nanodiamonds on mechanical and biological behavior to bone replacement application. To prepare mixtures of PHBHV and nD-A in different concentrations, nD-A was dispersed in chloroform by sonication with 40 % of amplitude. Three specimens were characterized by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (DRX), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), 3-point flexural tests, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). FTIR and TGA evidenced the existence of interactions between the nD-A and PHBHV. The crystallinity degree of PHBHV slightly reduced (~9 %) in nanocomposites and the morphology of the crystals changed. Nanocomposites achieved satisfactory dispersion and distribution of nD-A for low concentrations. Elastic modulus (E) increased from 1.96 ± 0.20 (PHBHV) to 2.59 ± 0.19 GPa (PHBHV/1.0%nD-A) (30 %). Despite the relatively limited dispersion, PHBHV/2.0 % nD-A had the best combination of E, strength, and maximum deformation. It had the highest glass transition temperature (43.1 vs 40.3 °C of PHBHV) and the best adhesion coefficient and reinforcement effectiveness. PHBHV-nD-A did not induce toxicity in 7 days and allowed cell fixation and expansion. These bionanocomposites should be considered for supplementary studies for bone tissue engineering.

Detonation Synthesis Nanodiamond Soot as a Promising Filler for Polymer Composites

In this work, the results of a complex investigation of structure and properties of nanodiamond soot (NDS) of detonation synthesis are presented. Size distribution of NDS particles, dispersed in different liquid media, was investigated using dynamic light scattering and laser diffraction analysis methods. The results of the investigation, as well as the results of zeta-potential measurements, allowed us to characterize the agglomeration process of the NDS particles as independent of the medium, making NDS a good model filler for research of composite-modified nanosized particles. Additional data obtained using scanning electron microscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy, demonstrated that in NDS the spherical nanodiamond (ND) particles with diameter ~5 nm are densely packed into strong-coupled aggregates with diameter ~300 nm, surrounded by graphite nanoribbons. X-ray diffraction analysis estimated the volume fraction of NDs in NDS as ~45 vol.%, simultaneously showing that the graphite is not defective, which was confirmed with the electron diffraction method. It was demonstrated that this structure of NDS allows to efficiently use NDS as a filler for polymer composites to increase polymer characteristics such as electrical conductivity or tribological characteristics, similarly to conventionally applied fillers such as carbon black.

Superhydrophobic Nanodiamond-Functionalized Melamine Sponge for Oil/Water Separation

Fabrication of absorbent materials foroil/water separation is an important ecological pursuit for oil spill clean-up and organic pollutants' removal. In this study, nanodiamonds (NDs), a promising member of the carbon family, were functionally modified by the covalent linking of octadecylamine (ODA). Subsequently, the superhydrophobic sponge with hierarchical microstructures was fabricated by embedding ND-ODA into a melamine sponge (MS) skeleton via a simple immersion-drying process. The as-prepared sponge (ND-ODA@PDMS@MS) showed superhydrophobic properties with a water contact angle of 155 ± 2°. For various oils and organic solvents, ND-ODA@PDMS@MS possesses excellent absorption capacity (26.65-55.64 g/g) and oil/water separation efficiency (above 98.6%). Furthermore, the adsorption capacity to crude oil remained relatively stable in highly acidic, alkaline, and salty conditions, ensuring the application in the clean-up of industrial oily sewages and marine oil spills. Besides absorbing oil for a single time, ND-ODA@PDMS@MS also exhibited satisfactory performance in continuous oil/water separation. Therefore, this work provides a facile strategy to produce robust and efficient absorbent materials for oil/water separation in large-scale oil and organic solvent clean-ups.

PMMA-Based Nanocomposites for Odontology Applications: A State-of-the-Art

Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), a well-known polymer of the methacrylate family, is extensively used in biomedicine, particularly in odontological applications including artificial teeth, dentures and denture bases, obturators, provisional or permanent crowns, and so forth. The exceptional PMMA properties, including aesthetics, inexpensiveness, simple manipulation, low density, and adjustable mechanical properties, make it a perfect candidate in the field of dentistry. However, it presents some deficiencies, including weakness regarding hydrolytic degradation, poor fracture toughness, and a lack of antibacterial activity. To further enhance its properties and solve these drawbacks, different approaches can be performed, including the incorporation of nanofillers. In this regard, different types of metallic nanoparticles, metal oxide nanofillers, and carbon-based nanomaterials have been recently integrated into PMMA matrices with the aim to reduce water absorption and improve their performance, namely their thermal and flexural properties. In this review, recent studies regarding the development of PMMA-based nanocomposites for odontology applications are summarized and future perspectives are highlighted.

Advances in nanomaterials for the diagnosis and treatment of head and neck cancers: A review

Nanomaterials (NMs) have increasingly been used for the diagnosis and treatment of head and neck cancers (HNCs) over the past decade. HNCs can easily infiltrate surrounding tissues and form distant metastases, meaning that most patients with HNC are diagnosed at an advanced stage and often have a poor prognosis. Since NMs can be used to deliver various agents, including imaging agents, drugs, genes, vaccines, radiosensitisers, and photosensitisers, they play a crucial role in the development of novel technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of HNCs. Indeed, NMs have been reported to enhance delivery efficiency and improve the prognosis of patients with HNC by allowing targeted delivery, controlled release, responses to stimuli, and the delivery of multiple agents. In this review, we consider recent advances in NMs that could be used to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of patients with HNC and the potential for future research.

Efficient removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous media by unmodified and modified nanodiamonds

This article deals with the adsorption performances of the unmodified nanodiamond (ND) and thermally oxidized nanodiamond (Ox-ND) for the removal of different heavy metal ions such as Fe (III), Cu (II), Cr (VI), and Cd (II) from wastewater. The adsorption capacities of the ions onto adsorbents are higher and follow the order: Ox-ND-3 > Ox-ND-1.5 > ND, which is consistent with their surface areas, zeta potentials, and the presence of carboxyl groups, suggesting that electrostatic attractions between the positive metal ions and the negatively charged adsorbents are the predominant adsorption mechanisms. Adsorption capacities of these adsorbents were found to be 26.8, 31.3, and 45.7 mg/g for Fe (III), 25.2, 30.5, and 44.5 mg/g for Cu (II), 33.6, 44.1, and 55.9 mg/g for Cr (VI), and 40.9, 52.9, and 67.9 mg/g for Cd (II) over ND, Ox-ND-1.5, and Ox-ND-3, respectively. The impact of various operating parameters such as agitation time, initial metal ion concentration, temperature, pH solution, adsorbent dosage, and coexistence of the metal ions on the adsorption performance of Ox-ND-3 towards Cd (II) ions along with the batch adsorption experiments were performed. The equilibrium was reached in 120 min and adsorption data were fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic as well as the Freundlich isotherm models. Adsorption process was spontaneous and exothermic, while the maximum removal efficiency of Cd (II) ions occurred at pH of 6.9 and at 4 g/L dosage. These findings demonstrated that thermally oxidized nanodiamond (Ox-ND) can be a versatile adsorbent to remove the Cd (II) ions from wastewater.

Recent Synergy of Nanodiamonds: Role in Brain-Targeted Drug Delivery for the Management of Neurological Disorders

The aim of the present review article is to summarize the role of nanodiamonds in various neurological diseases. We have taken related literature of making this review article from ScienceDirect, springer, Research gate, PubMed, Sci-finder, etc. The current approaches for treating neurological conditions such as glioblastoma includes chemotherapy or combination anti-retro viral therapy for HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) or use of anti-Alzheimer drugs during cognitive impairment. These approaches can provide only symptomatic relief as they do not target the cause of the disease due to their inability to penetrate the blood brain barrier. On long-term use, they may cause CNS toxicity due to accumulation in the brain. So nanodiamonds could prove as a promising approach in the brain targeting of the bioactive and to treat many neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, brain tumor (glioblastoma), HIV, amyotrophic multiple sclerosis, Huntington disease, stroke (cerebrovascular attack), batten disease, schizophrenia, epilepsy, and bacterial infections (encephalitis, sepsis, and meningitis) due to their ability to penetrate the blood-brain barrier and owing to their excellent surface properties, i.e., nano size and high surface area, ease of functionalization, multiple drug binding, and biocompatibility; they can be useful for brain targeted drug delivery with minimal side effects.

Tailoring of Optical Properties of Methacrylate Resins Enriched by HPHT Microdiamond Particles

Diamond particles have great potential to enhance the mechanical, optical, and thermal properties of diamond–polymer composites. However, the improved properties of diamond–polymer composites depend on the size, dispersibility, and concentration of diamond particles. In the present study, diamond–polymer composites were prepared by adding the microdiamond particles (MDPs) with different concentrations (0.2–1 wt.%) into polymers (acrylate resins) and then subjected to a photocuring process. The surface morphology and topography of the MDPs–polymer composites demonstrated a uniform high-density distribution of MDPs for one wt.% MPDs. Thermogravimetric analysis was employed to investigate the thermal stability of the MDPs–polymer composites. The addition of MDPs has significantly influenced the polymers’ thermal degradation. Absorption and emission spectra of thin layers were recorded through UV/Vis spectrophotometry and spectrofluorimetry. The obtained results revealed a significant increase in the fluorescence intensity of MDPs–polymer composites (at 1 wt.% of MDPs, a 1.5×, 2×, and 5× increase in fluorescence was observed for MDPs–green, MDPs–amber daylight, and MDPs–red resin, respectively) compared with the reference polymer resins. The obtained results of this work show the new pathways in producing effective and active 3D-printed optical elements.

Nanodiamond Integration into Niosomes as an Emerging and Efficient Gene Therapy Nanoplatform for Central Nervous System Diseases

Nanodiamonds (NDs) are promising materials for gene delivery because of their unique physicochemical and biological features, along with their possibility of combination with other nonviral systems. Our aim was to evaluate the biophysical performance of NDs as helper components of niosomes, named nanodiasomes, to address a potential nonviral gene delivery nanoplatform for therapeutic applications in central nervous system (CNS) diseases. Nanodiasomes, niosomes, and their corresponding complexes, obtained after genetic material addition at different ratios (w/w), were evaluated in terms of physicochemical properties, cellular uptake, intracellular disposition, biocompatibility, and transfection efficiency in HEK-293 cells. Nanodiasomes, niosomes, and complexes fulfilled the physicochemical features for gene therapy applications. Biologically, the incorporation of NDs into niosomes enhanced 75% transfection efficiency (p < 0.001) and biocompatibility (p < 0.05) to values over 90%, accompanied by a higher cellular uptake (p < 0.05). Intracellular trafficking analysis showed higher endocytosis via clathrins (p < 0.05) in nanodiaplexes compared with nioplexes, followed by higher lysosomal colocalization (p < 0.05), that coexisted with endosomal escape properties, whereas endocytosis mediated by caveolae was the most efficient pathway in the case of nanodiaplexes. Moreover, studies in CNS primary cells revealed that nanodiaplexes successfully transfected neuronal and retinal cells. This proof-of-concept study points out that ND integration into niosomes represents an encouraging nonviral nanoplatform strategy for the treatment of CNS diseases by gene therapy.

A review on carbon fiber-reinforced hierarchical composites: mechanical performance, manufacturing process, structural applications and allied challenges

The utilization of carbonaceous reinforcement-based polymer matrix composites in structural applications has become a hot topic in composite research. Although conventional carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composites (CFRPs) have revolutionized the composite industry by offering unparalleled features, they are often plagued with a weak interface and lack of toughness. However, the promising aspects of carbon fiber-based fiber hybrid composites and hierarchical composites can compensate for these setbacks. This review provides a meticulous landscape and recent progress of polymer matrix-based different carbonaceous (carbon fiber, carbon nanotube, graphene, and nanodiamond) fillers reinforced composites’ mechanical properties. First, the mechanical performance of neat CFRP was exhaustively analyzed, attributing parameters were listed down, and CFRPs’ mechanical performance barriers were clearly outlined. Here, short carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composite was distinguished as a prospective material. Second, the strategic advantages of fiber hybrid composites over conventional CFRP were elucidated. Third, the mechanical performance of hierarchical composites based on carbon nanotube (1D), graphene (2D) and nanodiamond (0D) was expounded and evaluated against neat CFRP. Fourth, the review comprehensively discussed different fabrication methods, categorized them according to performance and suggested potential future directions. From here, the review sorted out three-dimensional printing (3DP) as the most futuristic fabrication method and thoroughly delivered its pros and cons in the context of the aforementioned carbonaceous materials. To conclude, the structural applications, current challenges and future prospects pertinent to these carbonaceous fillers reinforced composite materials were elaborated.

Comparative Analysis of Erosive Wear Behaviour of Epoxy, Polyester and Vinyl Esters Based Thermosetting Polymer Composites for Human Prosthetic Applications Using Taguchi Design

In polymer composites, synthetic fibers are primarily used as a chief reinforcing material, with a wide range of applications, and are therefore essential to study. In the present work, we carried out the erosive wear of natural and synthetic fiber-based polymer composites. Glass fiber with jute and Grewia optiva fiber was reinforced in three different polymer resins: epoxy, vinyl ester and polyester. The hand lay-up method was used for the fabrication of composites. L16 orthogonal array of Taguchi method used to identify the most significant parameters (impact velocity, fiber content, and impingement angle) in the analysis of erosive wear. ANOVA analysis revealed that the most influential parameter was in the erosive wear analysis was impact velocity followed by fiber content and impingement angle. It was also observed that polyester-based composites exhibited the highest erosive wear followed by vinyl ester-based composites, and epoxy-based composites showed the lowest erosive wear. From the present study, it may be attributed that the low hardness of the polyester resulting in low resistance against the impact of erodent particles. The SEM analysis furthermore illustrates the mechanism took place during the wear examination of all three types of composites at highest fiber loading. A thorough assessment uncovers brittle fractures in certain regions, implying that a marginal amount of impact forces was also acting on the fabricated samples. The developed fiber-reinforced polymer sandwich composite materials possess excellent biocompatibility, desirable promising properties for prosthetic, orthopaedic, and bone-fracture implant uses.

Interfacial Contributions in Nanodiamond-Reinforced Polymeric Fibers

We study the interfacial energy parameters that explain the reinforcement of polymers with nanodiamond (ND) and the development of mechanical strength of electrospun ND-reinforced composites. Thermodynamic parameters such as the wettability ratio, work of spreading and dispersion/aggregation transition are used to derive a criterion to predict the dispersibility of carboxylated ND (cND) in polymeric matrices. Such a criterion for dispersion (D_c) is applied to electrospun cND-containing poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), polyacrylonitrile (PAN), and polystyrene (PS) fiber composites. The shifts in glass transition temperature (ΔT_g), used as a measure of polymer/cND interfacial interactions and hence the reinforcement capability of cNDs, reveal a direct correlation with the thermodynamic parameter D_c in the order of PAN < PS < PVA. Contrary to expectation, however, the tensile strength of the electrospun fibers correlates with the D_c and ΔT_g only for semicrystalline polymers (PAN < PVA) while the amorphous PS displays a maximum reinforcement with cND. Such conflicting results reveal a synergy that is not captured by thermodynamic considerations alone but also factor in the contributions of polymer/cND interface stress transfer efficiency. Our findings open the possibility for tailoring the interfacial interactions in polymer-ND fiber composites to achieve maximum mechanical reinforcement.

Nanodiamonds synthesis using sustainable concentrated solar thermal energy: applications in bioimaging and phototherapy

There is a renewed interest in nanodiamonds and their applications in biology and medicine, especially in bioimaging and photothermal therapy. This is due to their small size, chemical inertness and unique photo-properties such as bright and robust fluorescence, resistant to photobleaching and photothermal response under near infrared (NIR) irradiation. However, the biggest challenge limiting the wide-spread use of nanodiamonds is the high-energy consuming, dangerous and sophisticated synthetic methods currently adopted by industry named higher temperature high pressure approach, and detonation method. Despite over a decade of research towards the development of new synthetic approaches, most of the methods developed to date require sophisticated instrumentations and have high energy demand. To circumvent the reliance on high energy demanding sophisticated experimental setups, here we present a simple synthetic approach using solar energy as a sustainable sole energy source. Using low-grade coal as carbon precursor, we used high power magnifying glasses to concentrate and focus sunlight to induce synthesis of nanodiamonds. The synthesized nanodiamonds exhibit similar physicochemical and photo-properties as nanodiamonds synthesized using other synthetic approaches.In vitrostudies using macrophage Raw 264.7 cells demonstrated rapid uptake and bright fluorescence of the synthesized nanodiamonds with superior biocompatibility (≥95% cell viability). The synthesized nanodiamonds also exhibited dose dependent photothermal response under NIR irradiation.

Study on Structure, Thermal Behavior and Viscoelastic Properties of Nanodiamond-Reinforced Poly (vinyl alcohol) Nanocomposites

In this work, advanced polymer nanocomposites comprising of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and nanodiamonds (NDs) were developed using a single-step solution-casting method. The properties of the prepared PVA/NDs nanocomposites were investigated using Raman spectroscopy, small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). It was revealed that the tensile strength improved dramatically with increasing ND content in the PVA matrix, suggesting a strong interaction between the NDs and the PVA. SEM, TEM, and SAXS showed that NDs were present in the form of agglomerates with an average size of ~60 nm with primary particles of diameter ~5 nm. These results showed that NDs could act as a good nanofiller for PVA in terms of improving its stability and mechanical properties.

Green Approaches to Carbon Nanostructure-Based Biomaterials

The family of carbon nanostructures comprises several members, such as fullerenes, nano-onions, nanodots, nanodiamonds, nanohorns, nanotubes, and graphene-based materials. Their unique electronic properties have attracted great interest for their highly innovative potential in nanomedicine. However, their hydrophobic nature often requires organic solvents for their dispersibility and processing. In this review, we describe the green approaches that have been developed to produce and functionalize carbon nanomaterials for biomedical applications, with a special focus on the very latest reports.

Block copolymer-nanodiamond coassembly in solution: towards multifunctional hybrid materials

Polymer-nanodiamond composites are excellent candidates for the fabrication of multifunctional hybrid materials. They integrate polymer flexibility and exceptional properties of nanodiamonds (NDs), such as biocompatibility, mechanical strength, color centers, and chemically-tailored surfaces. However, their development is hindered by the challenge of ensuring that NDs are homogeneously distributed in the composites. Here, we exploit colloidal coassembly between poly(isoprene-b-styrene-b-2-vinyl pyridine) (ISV) block copolymers (BCPs) and NDs to avoid ND self-agglomeration and direct ND spatial distribution. NDs were first air oxidized at 450 °C to obtain stable dispersions in dimethylacetamide (DMAc). By adding ISV into the dispersions, patchy hybrid micelles were formed due to H-bonds between NDs and ISV. The ISV-ND coassembly in DMAc was then used to fabricate nanocomposite films with a uniform sub-50 nm ND distribution, which has never been previously reported for an ND loading (φND) of more than 50 wt%. The films exhibit good transparency due to their well-defined nanostructures and smoothness and also exhibit an improved UV-absorption and hydrophilicity compared to neat ISV. More intriguingly, at a φND of 22 wt%, ISV and NDs coassemble into a network-like superstructure with well-aligned ND strings via a dialysis method. Transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering measurements suggest a complex interplay between polymer-polymer, polymer-solvent, polymer-ND, ND-solvent, and ND-ND interactions during the formation of structures. Our work may provide an important foundation for the development of hierarchically ordered nanocomposites based on BCP-ND coassembly, which is beneficial for a wide spectrum of applications from biotechnology to quantum devices.

Microscopic insight into nanodiamond polymer composites: reinforcement, structural, and interaction properties

Nanodiamond (ND)-reinforced polymer composites attract a great deal of attention; however, insufficient understanding of their reinforced behavior is greatly limiting their further design and application. In this paper, a microscopic investigation of the stretched processes of aminated ND and resin composites is undertaken to elucidate the reinforcement mechanism of ND in the polymer matrix by employing molecular dynamics and semi-empirical quantum chemistry simulations. The stretching process and reinforcement behavior are observed on the nanoscale, and the nano-pinning effect of ND on the resin matrix is clarified. Further analyses indicate that due to the increase of system volume, the interactions between the ND and resin molecules increase with stretching; this facilitates the combination of ND and resin molecules and thus recovers the breakage of the resin matrix. This recovery process is regarded as the origin of the ND reinforcement of the polymer. The strong interaction between the ND and resin molecules is quantitatively assessed by the interpenetration of the van der Waals surface and the reduced density gradient analysis of electrons using quantum chemistry calculations. The high stability of their noncovalent combination is also revealed. This investigation provides an excellent approach for revealing the origin of ND reinforcement behavior and thus facilitates further optimization of the performance of the ND-polymer composites.

Nanodiamond-Enabled Thin-Film Nanocomposite Polyamide Membranes for High-Temperature Water Treatment

Despite growing demands for high-temperature wastewater treatment, most available polymeric membranes are limited to mild operating temperatures (<50 °C) and become less efficient at high temperatures. Herein we show how to make thermally stable reverse osmosis thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes by embedding nanodiamond (ND) particles. Polyamide composite layers containing different loadings of surface-modified ND particles were synthesized through interfacial polymerization. The reactive functional groups and the hydrophilic surface of the NDs intensified the interactions of the nanoparticles with the polymer matrix and increased the surface wettability of the TFN membranes. Contact angle measurement showed a maximum decrease from 88.4° for the pristine membrane to 58.3° for the TFN membrane fabricated with 400 ppm ND particles. The addition of ND particles and ethyl acetate created larger surface features on the polyamide surface of TFN membranes. The average roughness of the membranes increased from 108.4 nm for the pristine membrane to 177.5 nm for the TFN membrane prepared with highest ND concentration. The ND-modified TFN membranes showed a higher pure water flux (up to 76.5 LMH) than the pristine membrane (17 LMH) at ambient temperature at 220 psi and room temperature. The TFN membrane with the highest loading of ND particles overcame the trade-off relation between the water flux and NaCl rejection with 76.5 LMH and 97.3% when 2000 ppm of NaCl solution was filtered at 220 psi. Furthermore, with increasing ND concentration, the TFN membrane showed a lower flux decline at high temperatures over time. The TFN400 prepared with 400 ppm of m-phenylene diamine functionalized ND particles had a 13% flux decline over a 9 h filtration test at 75 °C. This research provides a promising path to the development of high-performance TFN membranes with enhanced thermal stability for the treatment of wastewaters at high temperatures.

Highly biocompatible multifunctional hybrid nanoparticles based on Fe3O4 decorated nanodiamond with superior superparamagnetic behaviors and photoluminescent properties

The multifunctional nanostructures with superparamagnetic and luminescent properties undergo revolution in the field of bio-nanotechnology. In this article, we reported a facile and efficient one-step modified co-precipitation method to load superparamagnetic Fe₃O₄ nanoparticle on oxidized nanodiamond (Ox-ND). Subsequently, the as-prepared Ox-ND/Fe₃O₄ hybrid nanoparticle was surface functionalized with vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) to enhance its compatibility with organic media. The structure, morphology, magnetic, and optical properties of the nanohybrid were systematically investigated. The results confirmed successful loading of crystalline Fe₃O₄ on the surface of Ox-ND. Ox-ND/Fe₃O₄ multifunctional hybrid nanoparticle presented strong superparamagnetism (with a saturation magnetization of 67 emu/g at room temperature) and photoluminescence (blue emission) with good chemical reactivity. PrestoBlue assay indicated great biocompatibility of silanized Ox-ND/Fe₃O₄ in MCF-7 cells even at high concentrations, e.g. 7.2 mg/mL. The hybrid nanoparticle synthesized in this study potentially opens doors for high contrast imaging and targeted delivery applications.

Changes in tribological and antibacterial properties of poly(methyl methacrylate)-based 3D-printed intra-oral appliances by incorporating nanodiamonds

It is essential for 3D-printed intra-oral appliances to be able to withstand the mechanical and microbial insult existent in the harsh environment of the oral cavity. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-based appliances are widely used in dentistry. Hence, the present study aimed to evaluate the role of nanodiamonds (NDs) as fillers to enhance the resistance to friction and wear. Using a solution-based mixing technique, 0.1 wt% ND was incorporated into the PMMA, and specimens were 3D-printed for tribological and bacterial analysis. The control specimens without ND fillers were tested against specimens with both amine-functionalized NDs (A-ND) and pure non-functionalized NDs (ND). The surface hardness test revealed a statistically significant increase in the Vickers micro-hardness (p < 0.001) in the nanocomposite groups. There was a significant reduction in the coefficient of friction (COF) (p < 0.01) in both the ND and A-ND nanocomposites compared to the stainless steel (SS) counter surfaces. However, for titanium (Ti)-based specimens, the COF of the control group was similar to that of A-ND but lower than that of ND. The wear resistance evaluation revealed that both the ND and A-ND groups displayed enhanced resistance to surface loss in comparison to the controls for both SS and Ti counter-surfaces (p < 0.001). Furthermore, both A-ND and ND exhibited significantly enhanced resistance to the formation of Streptococcus mutans biofilms after 48 h (p < 0.01) compared to the control group. Hence, we concluded that the addition of 0.1 wt% ND in the PMMA-based resin for 3D printing resulted in significant improvement in properties such as COF, wear resistance, and resistance to S. mutans, without any notable impact associated with the functionalization of the NDs.

A brief review concerning the latest advances in the influence of nanoparticle reinforcement into polymeric-matrix biomaterials

Nanoparticles (NPs) have been studied for a wide variety of applications, due to the elevated surface area and outstanding properties. Several types of NPs are available nowadays, each one with particular characteristics and challenges. Bionanocomposites, especially composed by polymer matrices, are gaining attention in the biomedical field. Although, several studies have shown the potential of adding NPs into these materials, some investigation is still needed until their clinical use for in vivo application is consummated. Besides that, is essential to evaluate whether the addition of nanoparticles changes the matrix property. In this review, we summarize the latest advances concerning polymeric bionanocomposites incorporated with organic (polymeric, cellulosic, carbon-based), and inorganic (metallic, magnetics, and metal oxide) NPs.

Novel 0D-nanocarbon-silica ceramic composites: sol-gel synthesis and high-temperature evolution

Herein we report the synthesis of novel 0D-nanocarbon-based silicon-containing ceramic composites by a facile salt-free synthesis method followed by polymer-to-ceramic transformation. 0D-nanocarbon-silica composites were synthesized via a one-pot sol-gel process using tetramethyl orthosilicate (TMOS) and functionalized nanodiamonds and converted subsequently via pyrolysis under an argon atmosphere into nanodiamond/silica nanocomposites. The thermal conversion of the nanodiamond phase to a multilayer fullerene phase was carefully investigated by integral and local characterization methods such as vibrational spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, BET, SEM and HRTEM. The incorporation of nanodiamonds in a silica matrix enhances the crystallization temperature of the silica phase, as α-cristobalite, to 1500 °C, while their full graphitization is shifted to T > 1700 °C under an argon atmosphere. The thermal decomposition of the nanodiamond/silica composites leads to the formation of materials with a high specific surface area (up to 562 m² g^-1) and a mesoporous structure. No carbothermal reaction of composing phases was identified. The results obtained in the present study allow for designing advanced and highly-defined mesoporous 0D-nanocarbon-containing composites with tailored structural features and multifunctional property profiles.

High Nanodiamond Content-PCL Composite for Tissue Engineering Scaffolds

Multifunctional scaffolds are becoming increasingly important in the field of tissue engineering. In this research, a composite material is developed using polycaprolactone (PCL) and detonation nanodiamond (ND) to take advantage of the unique properties of ND and the biodegradability of PCL polymer. Different ND loading concentrations are investigated, and the physicochemical properties of the composites are characterized. ND-PCL composite films show a higher surface roughness and hydrophilicity than PCL alone, with a slight decrease in tensile strength and a significant increase in degradation. Higher loading of ND also shows a higher osteoblast adhesion than the PCL alone sample. Finally, we show that the ND-PCL composites are successfully extruded to create a 3D scaffold demonstrating their potential as a composite material for tissue regeneration.

Incorporating Aminated Nanodiamonds to Improve the Mechanical Properties of 3D-Printed Resin-Based Biomedical Appliances

The creation of clinically patient-specific 3D-printed biomedical appliances that can withstand the physical stresses of the complex biological environment is an important objective. To that end, this study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of aminated nanodiamonds (A-NDs) as nanofillers in biological-grade acrylate-based 3D-printed materials. Solution-based mixing was used to incorporate 0.1 wt% purified nanodiamond (NDs) and A-NDs into UV-polymerized poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). The ND and A-ND nanocomposites showed significantly lower water contact angles (p < 0.001) and solubilities (p < 0.05) compared to those of the control. Both nanocomposites showed markedly improved mechanical properties, with the A-ND-containing nanocomposite showing a statistically significant increase in the flexural strength (p < 0.001), elastic modulus (p < 0.01), and impact strength (p < 0.001) compared to the control and ND-containing groups. The Vickers hardness and wear-resistance values of the A-ND-incorporated material were significantly higher (p < 0.001) than those of the control and were comparable to the values observed for the ND-containing group. In addition, trueness analysis was used to verify that 3D-printed orthodontic brackets prepared with the A-ND- and ND-nanocomposites exhibited no significant differences in accuracy. Hence, we conclude that the successful incorporation of 0.1 wt% A-ND in UV-polymerized PMMA resin significantly improves the mechanical properties of the resin for the additive manufacturing of precisive 3D-printed biomedical appliances.

Nanodiamonds as a state-of-the-art material for enhancing the gamma radiation resistance properties of polymeric membranes

We report, for the first time, the development of gamma radiation resistant polysulfone (Psf)-nanodiamond (ND) composite membranes with varying concentrations of NDs, ranging up to 2 wt% of Psf. Radiation stability of the synthesized membranes was tested up to a dose of 1000 kGy. To understand the structure-property correlationship of these membranes, multiple characterization techniques were used, including field-emission scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, drop shape analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, positron annihilation spectroscopy, and small angle X-ray scattering. All the composite membranes exhibited enhanced radiation resistance properties, with 0.5% loading of NDs as the optimum. Compared to the radiation stability of Psf membranes up to a dose of 100 kGy, the optimum composite membranes are found to be stable up to a radiation dose of 500 kGy, owing to the unique surface chemistry of NDs and interfacial chemistry of Psf-ND composites. Experimental findings along with the Monte Carlo simulation studies confirmed a five times enhanced life-span of the composite membranes in an environment of the intermediate level radioactive waste, compared to the control Psf membrane.

Stimuli-Responsive Nanodiamond-Polyelectrolyte Composite Films

Nanodiamonds (NDs) can considerably improve the mechanical and thermal properties of polymeric composites. However, the tendency of NDs to aggregate limits the potential of these non-toxic, mechanically- and chemically-robust nanofillers. In this work, tough, flexible, and stimuli-responsive polyelectrolyte films composed of cross-linked poly(butyl acrylate-co-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (P(BA-co-DMAEMA)) were prepared by photopolymerization. The effects of the added carboxylate-functionalized NDs on their mechanical and stimuli-responsive properties were studied. When the negatively charged NDs were added to the polymerization media directly, the mechanical properties of the films changed only slightly, because of the uneven distribution of the aggregated NDs in the films. In order to disperse and distribute the NDs more evenly, a prepolymerized polycation block copolymer complexing agent was used during the photopolymerization process. This approach improved the mechanical properties of the films and enhanced their thermally-induced, reversible phase-transition behavior.

High pressure: a feasible tool for the synthesis of unprecedented inorganic compounds

After a simple classification of inorganic materials synthesized at high-temperature and high-pressure, this tutorial reviews the important research results in the field of high-temperature and high-pressure inorganic synthesis in the past 5 years.
