Bio-synthesized palladium nanoparticles using alginate for catalytic degradation of azo-dyes

Hand-crafted potent hydroxyl-rich husk succoured Fe3O4 @ Cu, Mn, Ni, Co - tetra-metallic heterogenous nanocomposite as a catalytic accelerant

An innovative means of synthesizing mechanically recoverable ternary nanocomposite (NC) comprising Fe3O4 supported on Oryza sativa husk (OSH) and ornamented with 3d tetra-metals (M = Mn, Co, Ni, Cu) is proposed using a manual grinding method. This NC was prepared via a one-step manual method. The added advantage of this method is the non-usage of solvents during the synthesis of the NC. In situ, the NPs were grown on OSH-supported magnetite NPs, where they combined to form a matrix to facilitate the formation of the metal NPs in it. The as-crafted Oryza sativa husk-supported magnetite @ tetra-metallic nanocore hybrid (OSFTC) was confirmed via several characterisation techniques, such as XRD, FT-IR, HR-TEM, FE-SEM, XPS, VSM, NMR, and UV-vis analysis. The interesting twist in this NC is that the leaching-in of metals toward the core of the NC increases the magnetic nature of the composite as evidenced by VSM analysis. The electrostatic attraction between NPs formed and the matrix plausibly results in enhanced photocatalytic degradation of pharma-waste in an efficient way. The activity of the OSFTC increases for ciprofloxacin and paracetamol by 67 and 71%. Furthermore, the hydrogenation of anthropogenic pollutants via a foreign agent yields a good conversion percentage of 92%. In addition, the noxious hexavalent chromium is converted to a trivalent cation with the help of OSFTC, indicating good conversion under ambient conditions. Herein, OSFTC also exhibited effective activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Moreover, the ternary composite demonstrates consistent and commendable activity against pharmaceutical compounds and carcinogenic pollutants. The OSFTC was designed in a way to perform the cleavage of bonds for toxic materials efficiently.

MOF-Derived Spindle-Shaped Z-Scheme ZnO/ZnFe2O4 Heterojunction: A Magnetic Recovery Catalyst for Efficient Photothermal Degradation of Tetracycline Hydrochloride

The development of photocatalysts with a wide spectral response and effective carrier separation capability is essential for the green degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride. In this study, a magnetic recyclable Z-scheme ZnO/ZnFe2O4 heterojunction (ZZF) was successfully constructed via the solid phase method, using MIL-88A(Fe)@Zn as the precursor. An appropriate band gap width and Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism provide ZZF with excellent visible light absorption performance, efficient charge separation, and a strong redox ability. Under visible light irradiation, the degradation efficiency of tetracycline hydrochloride for the optimal sample can reach 86.3% within 75 min in deionized water and 92.9% within 60 min in tap water, exhibiting superior stability and reusability after five cycles. Moreover, the catalyst in the water can be conveniently recovered by magnetic force. After visible light irradiation for 70 min, the temperature of the reaction system increased by 21.9 °C. Its degradation constant (35.53 × 10-3 min-1) increased to 5.1 times that at room temperature (6.95 × 10-3 min-1). Using thermal energy enhances the kinetic driving force of the reactants and facilitates carrier migration, meaning that more charge is available for the production of •O2- and •OH. This study provides a potential candidate for the efficient degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride by combining thermal catalysis with a photocatalytic heterojunction.

In Vitro and In Vivo Studies on the Efficacy of Zinc-Oxide and Selenium Nanoparticle in Cryopreserved Goat (Capra hircus) Spermatozoa

Different nanoparticles (NPs) are currently being investigated for their potential role as cryoprotectant during semen cryopreservation in several mammalian species. It may be possible to improve semen quality following cryopreservation by supplementation of NPs in the freezing extenders. The present study was carried out in semen collected from four (4) Assam Hill Goat bucks (10 ejaculates per buck) to investigate the effect of supplementing zinc oxide (ZnO) and selenium (Se) NPs in Tris-citric acid-fructose yolk (TCFY) extender on in vitro sperm quality and in vivo fertility rate after freeze-thawing. The size morphology and zeta potential of ZnO and Se NPs were evaluated prior to its incorporation in the freezing extender. Qualified semen samples (> 70% progressive motility) were divided into five (5) aliquots and then diluted in TCFY extender containing ZnO and Se NP supplementation at different concentrations (T0, control; T1, 0.1 mg/mL ZnO NPs; T2, 0.5 mg/mL ZnO NPs; T3, 0.5 µg/mL Se NPs; and T4, 1 µg/mL Se NPs). Diluted semen was packed in 0.25 mL straws and then stored in liquid nitrogen. After thawing, post-thaw in vitro sperm attributes were evaluated. Finally, the effect of NPs on in vivo fertility rate was checked in heat-synched does (n = 70) by artificial insemination (AI) using straws that showed superior results during the in vitro study. Results showed that ZnO and Se NPs were poly-crystalline in nature with particle size below 100 nm (nm). The evaluated post-thaw sperm in vitro attributes were significantly (p < 0.001) higher in T1 in comparison to T0. The antioxidant enzyme activities were significantly (p < 0.001) higher in T1. Lipid peroxidation (LPO) profile was significantly (p < 0.001) lower in T1. Sperm motility and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) had a highly significant (r = 0.580, p < 0.05) association in T1. No significant (p > 0.05) differences in pregnancy rates were recorded after AI in the different treatments. In conclusion, extender supplemented with 0.1 mg/mL ZnO NPs improved post-thaw semen quality of goat spermatozoa consequently by increasing activities of endogenous antioxidant enzymes thereby lowering LPO levels. However, improved in vitro outcomes might not correspond to improved field fertility outcomes.

Characterization, catalytic, and recyclability studies of nano-sized spherical palladium particles synthesized using aqueous poly-extract (turmeric, neem, and tulasi)

Green synthesis of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) has gained immense significance compared to other metal ions owing to their unique properties. Among them, palladium 'Pd' has been in the spotlight for its stable and superior catalytic activity. This work focuses on the synthesis of Pd NPs using the combined aqueous extract (poly-extract) of turmeric (rhizome), neem (leaves), and tulasi (leaves). The bio-synthesized Pd NPs were characterized to study its physicochemical and morphological features using several analytical techniques. Role of Pd NPs as nano-catalysts in the degradation of dyes (1 mg/2 mL stock solution) was evaluated in the presence of a strong reducing agent (sodium borohydride; SBH). In the presence of Pd NPs and SBH, maximum reduction of methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO), and rhodamine-B (Rh-B) dyes was observed under 20nullmin (96.55 ± 2.11%), 36nullmin (96.96 ± 2.24%), and 27nullmin (98.12 ± 1.33%), with degradation rate of 0.1789 ± 0.0273 min^-1, 0.0926 ± 0.0102 min^-1, and 0.1557 ± 0.0200 min^-1, respectively. In combination of dyes (MB + MO + Rh-B), maximum degradation was observed under 50nullmin (95.49 ± 2.56%) with degradation rate of 0.0694 ± 0.0087 min^-1. It was observed that degradation was following pseudo-first order reaction kinetics. Furthermore, Pd NPs showed good recyclability up to cycle 5 (72.88 ± 2.32%), cycle 9 (69.11 ± 2.19%) and cycle 6 (66.21 ± 2.72%) for MB, MO and Rh-B dyes, respectively. Whereas, up to cycle 4 (74.67 ± 0.66%) during combination of dyes. As Pd NPs showed good recyclability, they can be used for several cycles thus influencing the overall economics of the process.

Designing multifunctional biocatalytic cascade system by multi-enzyme co-immobilization on biopolymers and nanostructured materials

In recent decades, enzyme-based biocatalytic systems have garnered increasing interest in industrial and applied research for catalysis and organic chemistry. Many enzymatic reactions have been applied to sustainable and environmentally friendly production processes, particularly in the pharmaceutical, fine chemicals, and flavor/fragrance industries. However, only a fraction of the enzymes available has been stepped up towards industrial-scale manufacturing due to low enzyme stability and challenging separation, recovery, and reusability. In this context, immobilization and co-immobilization in robust support materials have emerged as valuable strategies to overcome these inadequacies by facilitating repeated or continuous batch operations and downstream processes. To further reduce separations, it can be advantageous to use multiple enzymes at once in one pot. Enzyme co-immobilization enables biocatalytic synergism and reusability, boosting process efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Several studies on multi-enzyme immobilization and co-localization propose kinetic advantages of the enhanced turnover number for multiple enzymes. This review spotlights recent progress in developing versatile biocatalytic cascade systems by multi-enzyme co-immobilization on environmentally friendly biopolymers and nanostructured materials and their application scope in the chemical and biotechnological industries. After a succinct overview of carrier-based and carrier-free immobilization/co-immobilizations, co-immobilization of enzymes on a range of biopolymer and nanomaterials-based supports is thoroughly compiled with contemporary and state-of-the-art examples. This study provides a new horizon in developing effective and innovative multi-enzymatic systems with new possibilities to fully harness the adventure of biocatalytic systems.

Synthesize palladium nanoparticles from the macroalgae Sargassum fusiforme: An eco-friendly tool in the fight against Plasmodium falciparum?

Although numerous drugs are practiced to control malaria and its vectors, more recently, eco-friendly control tools have been proposed to battle its etiologic agents. Thus, using green bionanotechnology approaches, we aimed to synthesize palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) from the macroalgae Sargassum fusiforme (Sf), its potential antiparasitic activity against P. falciparum, as well as its possible cytotoxicity, in HeLa cells. After the biosynthesis of the PdSf NPs, their characterization was carried out by UV-Vis, FESEM, and EDX analyses, and their hydrodynamic size, zeta potential, and surface area were determined. Furthermore, the functional groups of the PdSf NPs were analyzed by FT-IR and GC-MS. While PdSf NPs had an IC50 of 7.68 μg/mL (Chloroquine (CQ)-s) and 16.42 μg/mL, S. fusiforme extract had an IC50 of 14.38 μg/mL (CQ-s) and 35.27 μg/mL (CQ-r). With an IC50 value of 94.49 μg/mL, PdSf NPs exhibited the least toxic effect on the HeLa cells. The Lipinski rule of five and ADMET prediction were used to assess the in silico models of caffeine acid hexoside and quercetin 7-O-hexoside for the presence of drug-like properties. Pathogenic proteins, primarily responsible for motility, binding, and disease-causing, were the target of the structurally based docking studies between plant-derived compounds and pathogenic proteins. Thus, our study pioneered promising results that support the potential antiplasmodial activity of eco-friendly synthesized PdSf NPs using S. fusiforme extract against P. falciparum, opening perspectives for further exploration into the use of these NPs in malaria therapy.

Fabricating Antibacterial Polyethylene Terephthalate Substrates Through an Industrial Approach by Applying Emulsions of Copper-Based Nanoparticles

In this research, various emulsions of copper-based nanoparticles were synthesized through the chemical reduction method followed by utilizing the pad–dry–cure technique as an industrial approach to manufacturing bactericidal polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates. Copper sulfate/copper acetate, sodium hypophosphite (SHP)/ascorbic acid, and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide were employed as salts, reducing agents, and stabilizers, respectively. Also, a spin finish oil was used for forming an emulsion. The effects of type and amount of copper salt and reductant as well as the use of resin and stabilizer were investigated concerning antibacterial activities, weight, and color changes of coated samples to find optimum formulation. Field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) images, mapping/energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern, Raman spectroscopy, and UV–visible spectrophotometer was proved successful in synthesis and loading of copper-based emulsions on the PET substrates. The results revealed that change of copper salt, substituting SHP with ascorbic acid, the addition of resin, and the use of surfactant yielded negligible effect, enhancing impact, reducing the influence, and improving efficacy on bactericidal characteristics of the treated samples, respectively. Based on findings, the samples coated by emulsion containing only copper sulfate/SHP and emulsion including only copper acetate were considered optimum samples indicating 100% bactericidal properties against both S. aureus and E. coli pathogenic bacteria. Despite showing bactericidal activities, it was further found that the treated samples exhibited cell toxicity toward human skin cells implying their applications in indirect contact usages. Coated samples further indicated a good washing fastness even after 20 washing cycles. This route can be considered as a facile industrially applicable method for imparting bactericidal properties to polymeric substrates. Furthermore, such emulsions can potentially be consumed as an antibacterial spin finish oil in melt-spinning to develop antibacterial textiles.

Azo dyes degradation by microorganisms - An efficient and sustainable approach

Synthetic aromatic compounds consisting of various functional groups are known as dyes. These colored compounds are often discharged in effluents, and they are very dangerous to aquatic life. Basically, the dye industry started by using natural plant and insect sources, and then suddenly turned into artificial manufacturing. Natural equilibrium of our environment gets changed by the reduction in photosynthetic activity due to the dyes. In China 900,000 tons of all kinds of dyes are usually produced, which are used in many industries like food, textile, food, paper and leather. Untreated wastewater contaminates aquatic bodies by causing eutrophication, change in water color, oxygen depletion which affect aquatic organisms to a great extent. Dye wastewater is now the key environmental pollution form. In recent eras an extensive study line has been developed to explore the dye decolorization and biodegradation under both aerobic as well as anaerobic conditions. In this review, the chemistry, toxicity and microbial biodegradation/decolorization are presented. Some recent studies along with the new techniques and methodologies of remediating the dye pollution are also discussed to provide the bases of their handling. Overall, efficient and high biodegradation potential make microbes an impending foundation for green chemistry to eradicate toxic dyes from industrial wastewater.

Synthesis methods and applications of palladium nanoparticles: A review

Palladium (Pd) is a key component of many catalysts. Nanoparticles (NPs) offer a larger surface area than bulk materials, and with Pd cost increasing 5-fold in the last 10 years, Pd NPs are in increasing demand. Due to novel or enhanced physicochemical properties that Pd NPs exhibit at the nanoscale, Pd NPs have a wide range of applications not only in chemical catalysis, but also for example in hydrogen sensing and storage, and in medicine in photothermal, antibacterial, and anticancer therapies. Pd NPs, on the industrial scale, are currently synthesized using various chemical and physical methods. The physical methods require energy-intensive processes that include maintaining high temperatures and/or pressure. The chemical methods usually involve harmful solvents, hazardous reducing or stabilizing agents, or produce toxic pollutants and by-products. Lately, more environmentally friendly approaches for the synthesis of Pd NPs have emerged. These new approaches are based on the use of the reducing ability of phytochemicals and other biomolecules to chemically reduce Pd ions and form NPs. In this review, we describe the common physical and chemical methods used for the synthesis of Pd NPs and compare them to the plant- and bacteria-mediated biogenic synthesis methods. As size and shape determine many of the unique properties of Pd NPs on the nanoscale, special emphasis is given to the control of these parameters, clarifying how they impact current and future applications of this exciting nanomaterial.

Strategies adopted for the preparation of sodium alginate–based nanocomposites and their role as catalytic, antibacterial, and antifungal agents

Alginate extracted from the marine brown algae is a massively utilized biopolymer in multiple fields such as microreactors for the fabrication of metal nanoparticles along with other polymeric and nonpolymeric materials to enhance their mechanical strength. These sodium alginate (Na-Alg)-based fabricated nanocomposites find applications in the field of catalysis and biological treatment as antibacterial/antifungal agent due to the synergistic properties of Na-Alg and fabricated metal nanoparticles (NPs). Na-Alg offers mechanical strength and nanoparticles provide high reactivity due to their small size. Sodium alginate exhibits hydroxyl and carboxylate functional groups that can easily interact with the metal nanoparticles to form composite particles. The research on the preparation of Na-Alg–based nanoparticles and nanoaggregates have been started recently but developed quickly due to their extensive applications in different fields. This review article encircles different methods of preparation of sodium alginate–based metal nanocomposites; analytical techniques reported to monitor the formation of these nanocomposites and used to characterize these nanocomposites as well as applications of these nanocomposites as catalyst, antibacterial, and antifungal agent.

New Green Approaches in Nanoparticles Synthesis: An Overview

Nanotechnology is constantly expanding, with nanomaterials being more and more used in common commercial products that define our modern life. Among all types of nanomaterials, nanoparticles (NPs) occupy an important place, considering the great amount that is produced nowadays and the diversity of their applications. Conventional techniques applied to synthesize NPs have some issues that impede them from being appreciated as safe for the environment and health. The alternative to these might be the use of living organisms or biological extracts that can be involved in the green approach synthesis of NPs, a process that is free of harmful chemicals, cost-effective and a low energy consumer. Several factors, including biological reducing agent concentration, initial precursor salt concentration, agitation, reaction time, pH, temperature and light, can influence the characteristics of biologically synthesized NPs. The interdependence between these reaction parameters was not explored, being the main impediment in the implementation of the biological method on an industrial scale. Our aim is to present a brief review that focuses on the current knowledge regarding how the aforementioned factors can control the size and shape of green-synthesized NPs. We also provide an overview of the biomolecules that were found to be suitable for NP synthesis. This work is meant to be a support for researchers who intend to develop new green approaches for the synthesis of NPs.

A comprehensive review on sustainable greener nanoparticles for efficient dye degradation

The effluents released from textile industries mainly consist of dyes, metals and other pollutants. Dyes often are discharged in wastewater streams causing adverse effect on the environment. To eliminate these harmful dyes, various techniques are emerging out of which nanotechnology is the most reliable and safer. Nanotechnology offers convincing applications in case of environmental and economic concerns. The bio-synthesis of nanoparticles has several advantages over conventional methods and approach towards environment concern as well. Biological method of nanoparticles synthesis is concluded to be the most promising and efficient in action. Bio-synthesised nanoparticles could be used for treatment and decolourisation of dyes in an efficient manner. This review comprises the study of number of bio-synthesised nanoparticles utilised for degradation of various dyes present as pollutants in wastewater. Bio-synthesised nanoparticles such as gold, silver, iron, cobalt, zinc, titanium and molybdenum used for degradation of various dyes have been discussed in this review.

Palladium nanoparticles as emerging pollutants from motor vehicles: An in-depth review on distribution, uptake and toxicological effects in occupational and living environment

Palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) play an integral role in motor vehicles as the primary vehicle exhaust catalyst (VEC) for tackling environmental pollution. Automobiles equipped with Pd-based catalytic converters were introduced in the mid-1970s and ever since the demand for Pd has steadily increased due to stringent emission standards imposed in many developed and developing countries. However, at the same time, the increasing usage of Pd in VECs has led to the release of nano-sized Pd particles in the environment, thus, emerging as a new source of environmental pollution. The present reports in the literature have shown gradual increasing levels of Pd particles in different urban environmental compartments and internalization of Pd particles in living organisms such as plants, aquatic species and animals. Occupational workers and the general population living in urban areas and near major highways are the most vulnerable as they may be chronically exposed to PdNPs. Risk assessment studies have shown acute and chronic toxicity exerted by PdNPs in both in-vitro and in-vivo models but the underlying mechanism of PdNPs toxicity is still not fully understood. The review intends to provide readers with an in-depth account on the demand and supply of Pd, global distribution of PdNPs in various environmental matrices, their migration and uptake by living species and lastly, their health risks, so as to serve as a useful reference to facilitate further research and development for safe and sustainable technology.

A Survey on Analytical Methods for the Characterization of Green Synthesized Nanomaterials

Nowadays, nanotechnologies are well established and the uses of a great variety of nanomaterials show exponential growth. The development of green synthesis procedures experienced a great development thanks to the contribution of researchers of diverse origins. The versatility of green chemistry allows producing a wide range of organic and inorganic nanomaterials with numerous promising applications. In all cases, it is of paramount importance to carefully characterize the resulting nanomaterials because their properties will determine their correct performance to accomplish the function to which they were synthesized or even their detrimental effects like nanotoxicological behavior. This review provides an overview of frequently employed characterization methods and their applications for green synthesized nanomaterials. However, while several different nanoscale materials and their associated green construction methodology are being developed, other important techniques would be extensively incorporated into this field soon. The aim is to encourage researchers in the field to employ a variety of these techniques for achieving an exhaustive characterization of new nanomaterials and for contributing to the development of validated green synthesis procedures.

Synthesis and characterization of palladium nanoparticles by chemical and green methods: A comparative study on hepatic toxicity using zebrafish as an animal model

Nanoparticles synthesized by chemical methods are of a matter of concern, whereas, the green methods are said to be eco-friendly and environmentally safe. In this study, the toxicity of palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) synthesized through chemical co-precipitation and green route method using Annona squamosa seed kernels (As-Pd NPs) were evaluated using zebrafish as an animal model. The synthesized nanoparticles (NPs) were characterized using UV-Visible spectroscopy, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) and Zeta potential. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) were exposed to 0.4 ng/L of Pd NPs and As-Pd NPs for 96-h, further oxidative stress parameters and histological changes were evaluated. The superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) activity and the lipid peroxidation (LPO) levels were elevated in the Pd NPs groups. But in the As-Pd NPs group, the SOD activity showed a biphasic nature while the CAT activity gradually declined till the 96-h compared to the control and Pd NPs groups. The LPO levels in the As-Pd NPs groups showed a measurable increase till 72-h and sudden decline at the end of 96-h. Anomalies in the histological changes such as ruptured hepatocytes, sinusoidal congestion, vacuolation and accumulation of erythrocytes were observed in both the NPs treated groups but As-Pd NPs exhibited lesser lesions than the control and Pd NPs groups. However, our present study reveals the possible reliability of the nanoparticles and the mechanism of scavenging activity suggesting that the As-Pd NPs synthesized by green route are less toxic comparing to the chemically synthesized Pd NPs.

Bioengineered Matricaria recutita Extract-Assisted Palladium Nanoparticles for the Congo Red Dye Degradation and Catalytic Reduction of 4-Nitrophenol to 4-Aminophenol

The green chemistry method is the preferred approach for synthesizing metal and metal oxide nanoparticles because of its low toxicity, environmental friendliness, feasibility, and safety to human health compared with other chemical or physical methods. The present work reports the phytogenic synthesis of palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) using an aqueous extract of Matricaria recutita (Chamomile). The phytochemical-mediated synthesis of PdNPs is an economical and eco-friendly approach without using toxic elements as reducing and capping or stabilizing agents. The UV-visible spectroscopic characterization was initially used to confirm the preparation of PdNPs using an aqueous extract of M. recutita flowers as a bioreductant for the reduction of Pd2+ to Pd0 without using any extra capping and reducing agents. The appearance of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak at 286 nm confirmed the formation of M. recutita extract-based PdNPs. Furthermore, the PdNPs were characterized by TEM, SEM, EDX, XRD, XPS, and FTIR to confirm their proper synthesis. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was implemented to interpret the decomposition pattern and thermal stability of as-synthesized PdNPs. The biosynthesized PdNPs were further applied as a nanocatalyst in degradation of an azo dye Congo red (CR) in the presence of NaBH4. The catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) was also investigated in the presence of NaBH4. All the catalytic reactions were performed in water, and no significant loss in catalytic activity was observed after recovery and reusability of the biosynthesized PdNPs.

Padina boryana mediated green synthesis of crystalline palladium nanoparticles as potential nanodrug against multidrug resistant bacteria and cancer cells

Green synthesized nanoparticles (NPs) have emerged as a new and promising alternative to overcome the drug resistance problem. Peculiar nano-specific features of palladium NPs (Pd-NPs) offer invaluable possibilities for clinical treatment. Due to the development of multi-drug resistance (MDR) in pathogenic bacteria and the prevalence of cancers, use of algae-mediated Pd-NPs could be a prospective substitute. Therefore, Pd-NPs were synthesized by a one-step, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly green method using the extract from a brown alga, Padina boryana (PB-extract), and evaluated for their antibacterial, antibiofilm, and anticancer activities. Pd-NPs were physicochemically characterized for size, shape, morphology, surface area, charge, atomic composition, crystal structure, and capping of Pd-NPs by PB-extract biomolecules by various techniques. The data revealed crystalline Pd-NPs with an average diameter of 8.7 nm, crystal size/structure of 11.16 nm/face-centered cubic, lattice d-spacing of 0.226 nm, 28.31% as atomic percentage, surface area of 16.1 m2/g, hydrodynamic size of 48 nm, and zeta-potential of - 28.7 ± 1.6 mV. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis revealed the role of PB-extract in capping of Pd-NPs by various functional groups such as -OH, C=C, C-O, and C-N from phenols, aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic rings, and aliphatic amine. Out of 31, 23 compounds were found involved in biosynthesis by Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. Isolated strains were identified as MDR Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia fergusonii, Acinetobacter pittii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Aeromonas enteropelogenes, and Proteus mirabilis and Pd-NPs exhibited strong antibacterial/antibiofilm activities against them with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) in the range of 62.5-125 μg/mL. Moreover, cell viability assays showed concentration-dependent anti-proliferation of breast cancer MCF-7 cells. Pd-NPs also enhanced mRNA expression of apoptotic marker genes in the order: p53 (5.5-folds) > bax (3.5-folds) > caspase-3 (3-folds) > caspase-9 (2-folds) at 125 μg/mL. This study suggested the possible role of PB-extract capped Pd-NPs for successful clinical management of MDR pathogens and breast cancer cells.

Bioreduction (AuIII to Au0) and stabilization of gold nanocatalyst using Kappa carrageenan for degradation of azo dyes

Colloidal gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been used in high technology applications due to their optical and electronic properties. Unfortunately, these broader applications are severely hampered by their agglomeration tendency and instability. Therefore, in this study, highly stable and aggregation resistant AuNPs were synthesized using Kappa carrageenan (κ-car) media (as a reducing and stabilizing agent) by a green synthesis protocol. The effect of different factors of reaction such as the concentration of κ-car (C_κ-car %), reaction time (t), temperature (T), and solution pH (here after simply define to 'reaction parameters') was studied by one-variable-at-a-time technique to optimize the yield production of AuNPs. The characterization of AuNPs synthesized at optimum conditions revealed that the particles are spherical in shapes, smaller in size (13.5 ± 5.1 nm) with a narrow distribution, highly crystalline (d-spacing = 0.230 nm) in nature, well stabilized (zeta potential = -22.1 mV) by coating by a thin layer of κ-car carbohydrate. The synthesized AuNPs reveal excellent catalytic function in the degradation (up to 99%) of azo-dyes. The kinetics study in the degradation reaction revealed that the technique could be extended to real wastewater treatment applications.
