Design and Preparation a New Composite Hydrophilic/Hydrophobic Membrane for Desalination by Pervaporation

Herein, experimental and theoretical approaches were used to design a new composite membrane for desalination by pervaporation. The theoretical approaches demonstrate the possibility to reach high mass transfer coefficients quite close to those obtained with conventional porous membranes if two conditions are verified: (i) a dense layer with a low thickness and (ii) a support with a high-water permeability. For this purpose, several membranes with a cellulose triacetate (CTA) polymer were prepared and compared with a hydrophobic membrane prepared in a previous study. The composite membranes were tested for several feed conditions, i.e., pure water, brine and saline water containing a surfactant. The results show that, whatever the tested feed, no wetting occurred during several hours of desalination tests. In addition, a steady flux was obtained together with a very high salt rejection (close to 100%) for the CTA membranes. Lastly, the CTA composite membrane was tested with real seawater without any pretreatment. It was shown that the salt rejection was still very high (close to 99.5%) and that no wetting could be detected for several hours. This investigation opens a new direction to prepare specific and sustainable membranes for desalination by pervaporation.

GO-Based Membranes for Desalination

Graphene oxide (GO), owing to its atomic thickness and tunable physicochemical properties, exhibits fascinating properties in membrane separation fields, especially in water treatment applications (due to unimpeded permeation of water through graphene-based membranes). Particularly, GO-based membranes used for desalination via pervaporation or nanofiltration have been widely investigated with respect to membrane design and preparation. However, the precise construction of transport pathways, facile fabrication of large-area GO-based membranes (GOMs), and robust stability in desalination applications are the main challenges restricting the industrial application of GOMs. This review summarizes the challenges and recent research and development of GOMs with respect to preparation methods, the regulation of GOM mass transfer pathways, desalination performance, and mass transport mechanisms. The review aims to provide an overview of the precise regulation methods of the horizontal and longitudinal mass transfer channels of GOMs, including GO reduction, interlayer cross-linking, intercalation with cations, polymers, or inorganic particles, etc., to clarify the relationship between the microstructure and desalination performance, which may provide some new insight regarding the structural design of high-performance GOMs. Based on the above analysis, the future and development of GOMs are proposed.

Membranes Coated with Graphene-Based Materials: A Review

Graphene is a popular material with outstanding properties due to its single layer. Graphene and its oxide have been put to the test as nano-sized building components for separation membranes with distinctive structures and adjustable physicochemical attributes. Graphene-based membranes have exhibited excellent water and gas purification abilities, which have garnered the spotlight over the past decade. This work aims to examine the most recent science and engineering cutting-edge advances of graphene-based membranes in regard to design, production and use. Additional effort will be directed towards the breakthroughs in synthesizing graphene and its composites to create various forms of membranes, such as nanoporous layers, laminates and graphene-based compounds. Their efficiency in separating and decontaminating water via different techniques such as cross-linking, layer by layer and coating will also be explored. This review intends to offer comprehensive, up-to-date information that will be useful to scientists of multiple disciplines interested in graphene-based membranes.

Graphene-Based Functional Hybrid Membranes for Antimicrobial Applications: A Review

Graphene-based nanomaterials have shown wide applications in antimicrobial fields due to their accelerated rate of pathogen resistance and good antimicrobial properties. To apply graphene materials in the antimicrobial test, the graphene materials are usually fabricated as two-dimensional (2D) membranes. In addition, to improve the antimicrobial efficiency, graphene membranes are modified with various functional nanomaterials, such as nanoparticles, biomolecules, polymers, etc. In this review, we present recent advances in the fabrication, functional tailoring, and antimicrobial applications of graphene-based membranes. To implement this goal, we first introduce the synthesis of graphene materials and then the fabrication of 2D graphene-based membranes with potential techniques such as chemical vapor deposition, vacuum filtration, spin-coating, casting, and layer-by-layer self-assembly. Then, we present the functional tailoring of graphene membranes by adding metal and metal oxide nanoparticles, polymers, biopolymers, metal–organic frameworks, etc., with graphene. Finally, we focus on the antimicrobial mechanisms of graphene membranes, and demonstrate typical studies on the use of graphene membranes for antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal applications. It is expected that this work will help readers to understand the antimicrobial mechanism of various graphene-based membranes and, further, to inspire the design and fabrication of functional graphene membranes/films for biomedical applications.

Novel Mixed Matrix Membranes Based on Polyphenylene Oxide Modified with Graphene Oxide for Enhanced Pervaporation Dehydration of Ethylene Glycol

Ethylene glycol (EG) is widely used in various economic and industrial fields. The demand for its efficient separation and recovery from water is constantly growing. To improve the pervaporation characteristics of a poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) membrane in dehydration of ethylene glycol, the modification with graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticles was used. The effects of the introduction of various GO quantities into the PPO matrix on the structure and physicochemical properties were studied by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies, scanning electron (SEM) and atomic force (AFM) microscopies, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), swelling experiments, and contact angle measurements. Two types of membranes based on PPO and PPO/GO composite were developed: dense membranes and supported membranes on a fluoroplast substrate (MFFC). Transport properties of the developed membranes were evaluated in the pervaporation dehydration of EG in a wide concentration range (10–90 wt.% and 10–30 wt.% water for the dense and supported membranes, respectively). The supported PPO/GO(0.7%)/MFFC membrane demonstrated the best transport properties in pervaporation dehydration of EG (10–30 wt.% water) at 22 °C: permeation flux ca. 15 times higher compared to dense PPO membrane—180–230 g/(m²·h)), 99.8–99.6 wt.% water in the permeate. The membrane is suitable for the promising industrial application.

PVA-Based MMMs for Ethanol Dehydration via Pervaporation: A Comparison Study between Graphene and Graphene Oxide

Two different types of 2D nanosheets, including hydrophobic graphene (GR) and hydrophilic graphene oxide (GO), were filled into poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) polymers to prepare mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for ethanol dehydration via pervaporation. The relationship between the physical/chemical properties of graphene and pervaporation performance of MMMs was investigated by a comparison of GR/PVA and GO/PVA MMMs in microstructure and PV performance. The incorporation of GO nanosheets into PVA reduced PVA crystallinity and enhanced the membrane hydrophilicity, while the incorporation of GR into PVA led to the opposite results. The incorporation of GR/GO into PVA depressed the PVA membrane swelling degree, and the incorporation of GR showed a more obvious depression effect. GR/PVA MMMs showed a much higher separation factor than GO/PVA MMMs, while they exhibited a much lower permeation flux than GO/PVA MMMs and pristine PVA membranes. The huge difference in microstructure and performance between GO/PVA and GR/PVA MMMs was strongly associated with the oxygen-containing groups on graphene lamellae. The higher permeation flux of GO/PVA MMMs was ascribed to the facilitated transport of water molecules induced by oxygen-containing groups and exclusive channels provided by GO lamellae, while the much lower permeation flux and higher separation factor GR/PVA MMMs was resulted from the smaller GR interplanar spacing (0.33 nm) and hydrophobicity as well as barrier effect of GR lamellae on the sorption and diffusion of water molecules. It was presumed that graphene intercalated with an appropriate number of oxygen-containing groups might be a good choice to prepare PVA-based MMMs for ethanol dehydration, which would combine the advantages of GR’s high interlayer diffusion selectivity and GO’s high permeation properties. The investigation might open a door to achieve both of high permeation flux and separation factor of PVA-based MMMs by tuning the microstructure of graphene.

Biodegradable Polymeric Membranes for Organic Solvent/Water Pervaporation Applications

Biodegradable polymers are a green alternative to apply as the base membrane materials in versatile processes. In this study, two dense membranes were made from biodegradable PGS (poly(glycerol sebacate)) and APS (poly(1,3-diamino-2-hydroxypropane-co-polyol sebacate)), respectively. The prepared membranes were characterized by FE-SEM, AFM, ATR-FTIR, TGA, DSC, water contact angle, and degree of swelling, in comparison with the PDMS (polydimethylpolysiloxane) membrane. In the pervaporation process for five organic solvent/water systems at 37 °C, both biodegradable membranes exhibited higher separation factors for ethanol/water and acetic acid/water separations, while the PDMS membrane attained better effectiveness in the other three systems. In particular, a positive relationship between the separation factor and the swelling ratio of organic solvent to water (DS_o/DS_w) was noticed. In spite of their biodegradability, the stability of both PGS and APS membranes was not deteriorated on ethanol/water pervaporation for one month. Furthermore, these two biodegradable membranes were applied in the pervaporation of simulated ABE (acetone-butanol-ethanol) fermentation solution, and the results were comparable with those reported in the literature.

Alicyclic Polyimide/SiO2 Mixed Matrix Membranes for Water/n-Butanol Pervaporation

Alicyclic polyimides (PIs) have excellent properties in solubility, mechanical strength, thermal property, etc. This study developed two types of alicyclic PI-based mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for water/n-butanol pervaporation application, which have never been investigated previously. The fillers were hydrophilic SiO₂ nanoparticles. The synthesized PI was mixed with SiO₂ nanoparticles in DMAc to make the casting solution, and a liquid film was formed over PET substrate using doctor blade. A dense MMM was fabricated at 80 °C and further treated via multi-stage curing (100–170 °C). The prepared membranes were characterized by FTIR, TGA, FE-SEM, water contact angle, and solvent swelling. The trends of pure solvent swelling effects agree well with the water contact angle results. Moreover, the pervaporation efficiencies of alicyclic PI/SiO₂ MMMs for 85 wt% n-butanol aqueous solution at 40 °C were investigated. The results showed that BCDA-3,4′-ODA/SiO₂ MMMs had a larger permeation flux and higher separation factor than BCDA-1,3,3-APB/SiO₂ MMMs. For both types of MMMs, the separation factor increased first and then decreased, with increasing SiO₂ loading. Based on the PSI performance, the optimal SiO₂ content was 0.5 wt% for BCDA-3,4′-ODA/SiO₂ MMMs and 5 wt% for BCDA-1,3,3-APB/SiO₂ MMMs. The overall separation efficiency of BCDA-3,4′-ODA-based membranes was 10–30-fold higher.

Nanoparticles functionalized ceramic membranes: fabrication, surface modification, and performance

Membrane technologies are used intensively for desalination and wastewater treatment. Water filtration using ceramic membranes exhibited high performance compared with polymeric membranes due to various properties such as high resistance to fouling, permeability, rejection rate, and chemical stability. Recently, the performance of nanocomposite ceramic membranes was improved due to the development in nanotechnology. This article focusses on the development of porous ceramic membranes and nanomaterial functionalized ceramic membranes for water filtration applications. At the beginning, various fabrication methods of ceramic membranes were described, and the effect of surface modification techniques on the membrane intrinsic properties was reviewed. Then, the performance of nanoparticles functionalized ceramic membranes was evaluated in terms of physicochemical properties, rejection rate, and water permeability. This work can help new entrants and established researchers to become familiar with the current challenges and developments of nanoparticle-incorporated ceramic membranes for water filtration applications.

Advantages, limitations, and future suggestions in studying graphene-based desalination membranes

The potential of novel 2D carbon materials such as nanoporous single-layer graphene and multilayer graphene oxide membranes is based on their possible advantages such as high water permeability, high selectivity capable of rejecting monovalent ions, with high salt rejection, reduced fouling, and high chemical and physical stability. Here we review how the field has advanced in the study of their performances in various desalination approaches such as reverse osmosis, forward osmosis, nanofiltration, membrane distillation, and solar water purification. The research on making high-performance graphene membranes which started with reverse osmosis applications is seemingly evolving towards other directions.

Fabrication and characterization of polyamide thin-film composite membrane via interfacial polycondensation for pervaporation separation of salt and arsenic from water

Pervaporation, mainly utilized to separate azeotropic mixtures, has been paid much attention for desalination in recent years due to its numerous advantages. The membranes based on thin-film composite structure have gained great interest in pervaporation due to their thin thickness, controllable hydrophilicity, and crosslinking density which affects the permeation flux and selectivity of the membranes. In this study, a polyamide thin-film composite (PA-TFC) membrane was fabricated through interfacial polymerization between amine monomers and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) on a polysulfone porous substrate (PSf). Four different diamine monomers, including ethylenediamine (EDA), triethylenetetramine (TETA), m-phenylenediamine (MPD), and piperazine (PIP) were used to investigate the effect of the monomers on the pervaporation performance of the resulting membrane for separation of sodium chloride (NaCl) and arsenate (As(v)) aqueous solution. The physicochemical properties of the membrane were characterized using attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and pure water contact angle measurement. Furthermore, the performance of the fabricated membranes was studied by pervaporation separation of 0.15 mg L⁻¹ As(v) and 5 g L⁻¹ NaCl aqueous solution at 40 °C, respectively. The results show that the rejections of the membrane are insignificantly affected by the chemical structures of the amines, and both the As(v) rejection and NaCl rejection are higher than 99.9%. However, the permeation flux decreases in the order of PIP-TMC membrane > TETA-TMC membrane ∼ EDA-TMC membrane > MPD-TMC membrane. Furthermore, the operating conditions are found to affect the separation performance of the PIP-TMC membrane significantly. In particular, the elevating operation temperature profoundly increases the permeation flux, while the increase in high salt concentration leads to a slight decrease in rejection but a significant decline in permeation flux. The derived membrane shows a reasonable permeation flux of 16.1 kg m⁻² h⁻¹ and ca. 99.9% rejection for 1.5 mg L⁻¹ As(v) removal, as well as 13 kg m⁻² h⁻¹ and 99.3% rejection for 30 g L⁻¹ NaCl separation at 60 °C. The sufficient permeation flux and good rejection of As(v) and NaCl of the membrane suggested the promising application of PA-TFC membrane for pervaporation removal of toxic arsenic from water and desalination of seawater.
