Abstract
Aims: Anemia, mean corpuscular volume and red cell distribution width may have some effects on survival outcomes of metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) patients and are incorporated in a red blood cell (RBC)-based score. Its validity in prognostication of mRCC patients treated with second-line nivolumab was assessed.Patients and methods: Retrospective analysis using Meet-URO-15 cohort of mRCC patients receiving nivolumab in the second-line setting or beyond. Outcomes were overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS).Results: A total of 390 patients were included. Significant differences in OS and PFS between RBC-based score groups, with group 1 (2 or 3 of the RBC-related prognostic factors) having longer OS (median 29.5 months, 95% CI: 23.1-35.9, versus 11.5 months, 95% CI: 8.5-22.6; p < 0.001) and PFS (7.5 months, 95% CI: 5.5-10.2, versus 4.2 months, 95% CI: 3.3-5.9; p = 0.040) than those in group 0 (0 or 1 RBC-related prognostic factors). Belonging to group 1 independently predicted OS (hazard ratio: 0.65, 95% CI: 0.50-0.85; p = 0.002) but not PFS (hazard ratio: 0.89, 95% CI: 0.70-1.14, p = 0.370) or disease response (OR 0.68, 95% CI: 0.41-1.10; p = 0.118) at multivariable analysis.Conclusion: RBC-based group scores independently predicted OS in mRCC patients treated with nivolumab.

Abstract
Purpose This study aimed to investigate the association between preoperative inflammation-associated blood cell markers and the prognosis of patients with non-metastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) who underwent nephrectomy. Patients and Methods We retrospectively analyzed data from our single-center cohort of patients who underwent radical or partial nephrectomy for non-metastatic ccRCC. The optimal cutoff values for red blood cell distribution width (RDW), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) were determined using X-tile software. We evaluated recurrence-free survival (RFS), cancer-specific survival (CSS), and overall survival (OS) using the Kaplann-Meier method. Cox proportional-hazards regression models were utilized to assess predictors of RFS, CSS, and OS. The predictive accuracy was evaluated using Harrell's Concordance Index (C-index). Results A total of 444 patients who underwent nephrectomy were included in the study. The optimal cutoff values for RDW, PLR, NLR, and LMR were determined as 13.1, 157.3, 3.4, and 2.7, respectively. On univariate Cox regression analysis, NLR, PLR, and LMR were significant predictors for RFS, CSS, and OS. After adjusting for important prognostic factors, only NLR remained a significant prognostic marker for both CSS and OS. When NLR was added to the stage, size, grade, and necrosis (SSIGN) model, the C-index increased from 0.777 to 0.826 for CSS and from 0.703 to 0.734 for OS. Similarly, when NLR was added to the University of California, Los Angeles, Integrated Staging System (UISS), the C-index increased from 0.796 to 0.811 for CSS and from 0.735 to 0.745 for OS. Conclusion NLR is a reliable prognostic biomarker for patients with non-metastatic ccRCC. The prognostic capabilities of UISS and SSIGN models could be improved by adding NLR to UISS and SSIGN models.

Abstract
Background Tyrosine-kinase inhibitors (TKIs) and immunotherapy represent the backbone treatment for metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) patients. The aim of the present study was to describe mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and red cell distribution width (RDW) in mRCC patients treated with pazopanib or cabozantinib, and to explore their potential impact on oncological outcomes. Materials and methods We conducted a multicenter retrospective observational study in mRCC patients treated with pazopanib or cabozantinib between January 2012 and December 2020 in nine Italian centers. Descriptive statistics, univariate, and multivariate analyses were performed. Objectives The primary endpoints were the incidence and trend over time of anemia, macrocytosis (elevated MCV), and anisocytosis (elevated RDW). The secondary endpoints were the correlations of MCV and RDW with objective response rate (ORR), progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS). Results A total of 301 patients were enrolled; mean Hb value was 12.5 g/dl, a mean increase of 1 g/dl was observed at day 15 and maintained at 3 months. Most patients had baseline macrocytosis (MCV levels > 87 fl), with a significant mean increase after 3 months of treatment. At univariate analysis patients with macrocytosis had better ORR, longer PFS, and OS. About one third of patients had baseline anisocytosis (RDW > 16%), with a significant mean increase after 3 months of treatment. At univariate analysis, patients with RDW values ⩽ 16% had higher ORR, longer PFS, and OS. At multivariate analysis, baseline macrocytosis was significantly associated with better PFS in patients treated with pazopanib and baseline anisocytosis with shorter OS in all patients. Conclusions mRCC patients treated with pazopanib or cabozantinib may have baseline macrocytosis and anisocytosis. A significant increase of Hb, MCV, and RDW after TKIs start was observed. Baseline macrocytosis is positively correlated with PFS in patients treated with pazopanib and baseline anisocytosis affects survival of patients treated with TKIs.

Abstract
Aim It is red cell distribution width (RDW) that has been reported to show an inflammatory response which has been studied recently. The aim of this study is to investigate whether the pre-treatment RDW in patients using first-line vascular endothelial growth factor tyrosine kinase inhibitor (VEGFR TKI) with the diagnosis of metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) predicts treatment response and is a prognostic factor or not. Methods About 92 patients diagnosed with mRCC who were being treated with sunitinib or pazopanib in the first line between January 2015 and June 2021 were included in the study. The patients were divided into 2 groups, as being ≤15.3 and >15.3, according to the RDW cut-off value calculated by ROC analysis. Results The mOS of patients with a RDW of ≤15.3% was 45.0 (30.0-59.9) months, and of 21.3 (10.4-32.2) in those with a RDW of >15.3%. This difference was statistically significant (p < 0.001). In the group of patients with a RDW of ≤15.3, median progression free survival (mPFS) (38.04 [16.3-59.7] months) was found to be significantly higher than those with a RDW of >15.3 (17.1 [11.8-22.5] months) (p = 0.04). In multivariate analysis, RDW level (≤15.3, >15.3), was determined to be prognostic markers (p = 0.022). Conclusion In mRCC patients, the RDW value measured before first-line VEGFR TKI therapy is an independent prognostic marker.

Abstract
Purpose: To demonstrate the prognostic value of pretreatment red blood cell distribution width (RDW) in patients with urological cancer. Methods: We searched the relevant literature on Web of Science, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PubMed, Embase, Sinomed databases and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure up to 30 March 2022, to investigate the relationship between RDW levels and the prognosis of patients with urological tumors. Results: This study comprised 15 retrospective studies involving 9492 patients. Increased pretreatment RDW was associated with poorer overall survival (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.52; 95% CI: 1.27-1.82; p < 0.001), cancer-specific survival (HR: 1.34; 95% CI: 1.15-1.57; p < 0.001) and progression-free survival (HR: 1.53; 95% CI: 1.26-1.86; p < 0.001). Conclusion: High pretreatment RDW might predict poor survival for patients with urologic cancers.

Abstract
Aim: To explore the association between preoperative hemoglobin-to-red cell distribution width ratio (HRR), platelet-to-monocyte ratio or monocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein ratio and risk of breast cancer. Materials & methods: The clinical data of 226 patients with breast cancer were retrospectively analyzed and compared with 199 healthy controls by multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results: Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that HRR (p < 0.001) and monocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein ratio (p < 0.001) were independent predictors of breast cancer and lower HRR was associated with longer hospitalization, larger red cell distribution width value and lower hemoglobin level (p < 0.05). Conclusion: A significant association was found between HRR and clinical characteristics in breast cancer patients. Therefore, HRR is expected to become a novel and promising predictor of breast cancer.

Abstract
PURPOSE The prognostic significance of the mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and red cell distribution width (RDW) in patients with malignancy have not been intensely investigated and are largely overlooked. We, therefore, investigated the clinical significance of MCV and RDW in non-metastatic obstructive colorectal cancer (OCRC) patients with a self-expandable metallic stent inserted as a bridge to curative surgery. METHODS Eighty-five pathological stage II and III OCRC patients were retrospectively evaluated. The associations of the preoperative MCV and RDW values with short- and long-term outcomes were examined. RESULTS There were 50 males and 35 females, and the median age was 71 years old. The median interval between stenting and surgery was 17 days, and the median postoperative hospital stay was 16 days. Fifty-six patients were in the MCV ≥ 87 group, and 47 were in the RDW ≥ 13.8 group. Multivariate analyses revealed the MCV ≥ 87 status to be independently associated with a poor relapse-free survival (hazard ratio [HR] = 4.70, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.52-14.58, P = 0.007). The RDW ≥ 13.8% was an independent predictor of postoperative infectious complications (HR = 7.28, 95% CI 1.24-42.70, P = 0.028). CONCLUSION The MCV and RDW are simple but strong predictors of postoperative outcomes in OCRC patients.

Abstract
Background Recent reports with a small number of patients showed an association of red blood cell distribution width (RDW) with prostate cancer (PCa) progression. Objective To investigate whether preoperative RDW can serve as a prognostic marker in patients with PCa undergoing radical prostatectomy (RP) in a large, equal access, and diverse patient cohort. Design, setting, and participants Data were retrospectively collected on 4756 men treated with RP at eight Veteran Affairs medical centers within the Shared Equal Access Regional Cancer Hospital (SEARCH) database from 1999 through 2017. Outcome measurements and statistical analysis Biochemical recurrence (BCR) was the primary outcome, while metastasis, all-cause mortality (ACM), and prostate cancer–specific mortality (PCSM) were secondary outcomes. Results and limitations The mean (standard deviation) age was 62 yr (6.1), and 1589 (33%) men were black. The median (interquartile range) follow-up was 82 mo (46–127). Preoperative RDW either as a continuous variable or when stratified by quartiles was not associated with BCR. Likewise, preoperative RDW was not associated with metastases or PCSM. However, higher RDW was significantly associated with higher ACM, both as a continuous variable (p < 0.001) and when stratified by quartiles in univariable and multivariable models (p < 0.001). RDW was found to be correlated with D’Amico risk classification of PCa. Study limitations include its retrospective nature and lack of data regarding advanced PCa. Conclusions Preoperative RDW was not associated with PCa outcomes in men treated with RP but was associated with ACM. While RDW may be a biomarker of overall health, it is not a biomarker for PCa outcomes. These results emphasize the importance of diverse, larger sized studies in genitourinary cancer research. Patient summary Prostate cancer includes a wide spectrum of diseases with different genetic, pathological, and oncological behaviors. Red blood cell distribution width is helpful in predicting the overall survival for a localized prostate cancer patient, and hence, it can help inform personalized treatment decisions and operative care.

Abstract
The aim of the current research was to investigate the prognostic significance of pretreatment hemoglobin-to-red cell distribution width ratio (HRR) in patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC). The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, systemic immune-inflammation index, lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) and HRR were analyzed retrospectively to assess their prognostic value using Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox regression analysis in 198 patients with RCC. High HRR (0.72) and high LMR (2.43) were found to be associated with longer progression-free survival and overall survival. A multivariate analysis identified International Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma Database Consortium prognostic score, tumor stage, node stage, LMR and HRR as independent prognostic factors for progression-free survival, as well as International Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma Database Consortium score, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and HRR for overall survival. HRR is a an independent prognostic parameter predicting the progression and survival of patients with RCC.

Abstract
Background: Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is a very common malignant disease with high morbidity. We needed some pretreatment indicators to help us predict prognosis and guide treatment. We conducted a study about some pretreatment prognostic indicators. Methods: This clinical study recruited 705 postoperative PTC patients (211 males, 494 females). Clinical data before radioactive iodine (RAI) treatment were collected. Patients’ response to therapy were classified into two categories: ‘Good Prognosis Group’ (GPG) and ‘Poor Prognosis Group’ (PPG), according to ‘2015 American Thyroid Association Guidelines’. Differences of indicators between different prognosis groups were compared. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated by univariate/multiple binary logistic regression models. Difference of body mass index (BMI) changes before and after RAI treatment between different prognosis groups was also compared. Results: A total of 546 (77.45%) belonged to GPG, and 159 (22.55%) belonged to PPG. Platelet (PLT), neutrophil (NEUT), PLT subgroups, and combination of red blood cell distribution width (RDW) and BMI (COR-BMI) were different between two prognosis groups. The significance of the difference between the two groups of BMI disappeared after the Bonferroni correction. PLT and PLT subgroups had detrimental effects on the risk of PPG; T stage had a positive effect on the risk of PPG. PLT subgroup showed a detrimental effect on the risk of PPG when we included additional covariates. Conclusions: We found that lower pretreatment PLT levels may indicate a poor prognosis for PTC. The relationship between platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and radiation sensitivity may be the key to this association.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to investigate the prognostic value of red cell distribution width (RDW) in metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) patients treated with targeted therapy, including sunitinib and pazopanib. METHODS A total of 104 mRCC patients were included. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS), and the long-rank test was used for comparison. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards models were used to determine the association between RDW and PFS and OS. RESULTS The PFS and OS of all cohorts were 11.8 mo and 25.9 mo, respectively. Receiver operating characteristic analysis revealed that RDW level ≥15.4 was the optimal cutoff value for OS prediction with 73.53% sensitivity and 61.11% specificity (area under curve: 0.64, P = 0.012). RDW level ≥15.4 was found as an independent prognostic parameter for OS when adjusted for the number of covariates, including the International Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma Database Consortium (IMDC) scoring system (hazard ratio: 1.125, 95% confidence interval: 1.024-2.235, P = 0.014). CONCLUSIONS Our study revealed that high RDW level, a routinely and easily assessed marker, was significantly associated with worse survival outcomes in mRCC patients treated with targeted therapy.

Abstract
Simple Summary Red blood cell distribution width is a measure of the variation of erythrocyte volume. Impaired erythropoiesis can lead to a wide variation in erythrocyte dimension—defined as anisocytosis—indicating that pathological modifications are taking place. Recently, red blood cell distribution width has been advocated as an effective prognostic factor in cardiovascular diseases, acute kidney injury, autoimmune disease, and oncologic settings. In many advanced and several early-stage oncologic conditions, it has shown excellent prognostic efficacy; we therefore investigated what prognostic role red blood cell distribution width may have in resected lung cancer, focusing on pN1 adenocarcinoma patients in whom adjuvant treatments—although well-established—are still proposed case by case. Our findings suggest that red blood cell distribution width is strictly related to disease-free survival; it could therefore be considered as a further tool for planning postoperative adjuvant treatments and setting up an adequate follow-up program. Abstract Background: Red blood cell distribution width is a measure of the variation of erythrocyte volume and has recently been advocated as a prognostic tool in neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases. We studied the prognostic role of preoperative red blood cell distribution width (RDW) in resected pN1 lung adenocarcinoma patients. Methods: Sixty-seven consecutive pN1 lung adenocarcinoma patients operated in the last two years were retrospectively evaluated in the present study. Age, sex, smoking status, type of surgical resection, neoadjuvant and adjuvant treatments, pathological stage, T and N status, tumor size, preoperative hemoglobin (Hb) and RDW, preoperative neutrophils, lymphocytes, and their ratio were collected for each patient. Outpatient follow-up was performed and date of relapse was recorded. Results: There were 24 females (35.8%). Twenty-eight patients (41.8%) belonged to stage 3A and thirty-nine patients (58.2%) to stage 2B. Mean preoperative RDW % was 14.1 (IQR: 12.9–14.8). Univariate analysis disclosed preoperative RDW as strictly related to disease-free survival (p = 0.02), which was confirmed in the exploratory multivariable analysis (p = 0.003). Conclusions: Pre-operative RDW is an effective prognostic factor of disease-free survival in resected pN1 lung adenocarcinoma; it could therefore be considered as a further tool for planning postoperative adjuvant treatments and setting up an adequate follow-up program.

Abstract
An increasing number of studies have indicated that red blood cell distribution width (RDW) may be a novel biomarker for the diagnosis and prognosis of various malignancies. However, to date, data on the association of RDW with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are unclear. Our present study aimed to explore the value of RDW in NSCLC patients. A total of 338 NSCLC patients, 109 small cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients, and 302 healthy participants were retrospectively analyzed between January 2016 and December 2018. In the present study, we found that RDW was significantly increased in NSCLC patients. Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) analysis showed that the area under the ROC curve (AUC) of RDW was 0.753 in discriminating NSCLC patients from healthy participants, the optimal cut-off value of RDW was 12.95, and the specificity and sensitivity were 76.33% and 76.16%, respectively. Further analysis found that RDW can enhance the diagnostic performance of Cyfra21-1 and NSE in discriminating NSCLC patients from healthy participants or SCLC patients. Among NSCLC patients, RDW was significantly correlated with TNM stage, T stage, N stage, M stage, and Cyfra21-1, indicating that RDW may be helpful for predicting the prognosis of NSCLC patients. Our findings suggest that RDW can be used as an auxiliary marker for the diagnosis and prognosis of NSCLC.

Abstract
Purpose Red cell distribution width (RDW) measures red cells’ size variability. Metastatic penile cancer displays poor chemotherapy response. As no validated prognostic predictor exists, we investigated whether RDW correlates independently with survival outcomes in metastatic penile cancer treated by chemotherapy. Methods Electronic chemotherapy files of patients with metastatic penile cancer (M1 or N3) from a large academic supra-regional centre were retrospectively analysed between 2005 and 2018. Patients were stratified into RDW > 13.9% and < 13.9%, as per published data on RDW in renal cell carcinoma. Survival time was calculated from the date of chemotherapy initiation until the date of death. Results 58 patients were analysed. The RDW-high group (n = 31) had a poorer survival than the RDW-low group (n = 27). Median overall survival (mOS) in all patients was 19.0 months (95% CI 13.1–24.9). mOS for RDW-high was 15.0 months (95% CI 10.1–19.9) and 37.0 months (95% CI 32.3–43.1) for RDW-low. Kaplan–Meier curves showed a clear disparity in survival (log rank p = 0.025). Cox proportional hazard ratio for death, corrected for T-stage, grade, age and deprivation score was 0.43 (p = 0.04). Sub-analysis of the M1 patients showed mOS in RDW-high of 17 m (95% CI 11.6–22.4) vs. NR; HR for death of 0.42. N3 patients’ mOS in RDW-high cohort was 30 months (95% CI 4.5–55.9) vs. 13 months (95% CI 1.8–24.2) in RDW-low; HR for death was 0.30. Conclusion RDW correlates independently with survival outcomes in metastatic penile cancer and may act as a potential predictor of survival outcomes for patients with metastatic penile cancer receiving chemotherapy.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Renal cell carcinoma is a highly aggressive malignancy that causes significant morbidity and mortality. The rising number of newly diagnosed renal tumors results in a great need to search for new preoperative markers to evaluate the course of the disease and to help select patients who would benefit the most from additional postoperative care. The aim of our study was to evaluate the prognostic value of mean platelet volume-to-lymphocyte ratio (MPVLR) in patients undergoing nephrectomy for nonmetastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS A total number of 344 patients with proven nonmetastatic ccRCC treated with radical or partial nephrectomy at our institution between January 2003 and December 2012 were included in our analysis. Based on the optimal cut-off value of MPVLR, which was determined by the receiver operating characteristic curve, our study population was divided into two groups, with low and high MPVLR. Differences in overall survival between groups were compared using the Kaplan-Meier method with log-rank testing. The Cox proportional hazards regression model was applied to perform univariate and multivariate analysis. RESULTS Study subjects with high MPVLR were older and had more advanced tumors. Tumor necrosis and higher TNM stages were also more prevalent in this group of patients. Mortality in patients with high MPVLR was significantly higher than in patients with low MPVLR. In the multivariate analysis, after adjustment for pathological and clinical covariates, high MPVLR (≥ 3.61) was independently associated with higher long-term overall mortality in nonmetastatic ccRCC patients. CONCLUSION MPVLR is an easily obtainable prognostic marker for overall survival in nonmetastatic ccRCC patients treated with nephrectomy.

Abstract
Aim The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prognostic impact of red-cell distribution width (RDW) on the overall survival (OS) of patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the tongue. Background Development of cancer is connected with an ongoing inflammatory process which is reflected by laboratory indices, such as RDW that can be used as prognostic tools. Material and methods The study group consists of 74 consecutive patients treated with radical radiotherapy or chemo-radiotherapy for SSC of the tongue at one institution between 2005-2014. RDW was assessed based on routine blood tests done before the start of the treatment. ROC curve was applied to assess value of RDW in prediction of OS, and a cut-off value for further tests was obtained using the Younden index. The survival analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method, log-rank testing and Cox regression model. Results The AUC for RDW in ROC analysis was 0.703, and the optimal cut-off value was 13.5%. 5-year OS was significantly lower in patients with RDW ≥ 13.5% compared with patients with RDW < 13.5% (67% vs. 26%, p-value = 0.0005). Additionally, high RDW was associated with a greater odds ratio for 5-year OS in a multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analysis (3.43, 1.62-7.25; p = 0.001). Conclusion Our study demonstrated that pre-treatment RDW ≥ 13,5% is an indicator of poor overall survival in patients with SCC of the tongue. Since RDW is a cheap and convenient marker, usually routinely assessed during complete blood count tests, it could be further used as an additional prognostic tool in patients with tongue cancers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Our objective was to evaluate the effect of the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), lymphocyte/monocyte ratio (LMR), and red blood cell distribution width (RDW) on the survival outcomes of nonmetastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS We accessed our single-center, urologic-oncologic registry to extract the data for patients who had undergone nephrectomy for nonmetastatic ccRCC. The optimal cutoff for these markers was determined using X-tile software, and survival analyses using Cox regression were performed. RESULTS A total of 687 patients had undergone nephrectomy. The optimal cutoffs for NLR, PLR, LMR, and RDW were 3.3, 210, 2.4, and 14.3%, respectively. The NLR, PLR, LMR, and RDW were significantly associated with a larger pathologic tumor size, and stage, more aggressive Fuhrman grade, and the presence of tumor necrosis. After adjusting for age, baseline Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, pathologic tumor and nodal stage, and Fuhrman grade, only PLR remained an independent prognostic marker for both cancer-specific survival (hazard ratio, 2.69; 95% confidence interval, 1.36-5.33; P = .004) and overall survival (hazard ratio, 2.19; 95% confidence interval, 1.36-3.50; P = .001). When the PLR was included with the Leibovich score and University of California, Los Angeles, integrated staging system, the Harrell's c-index increased from 0.854 to 0.876 and 0.751 to 0.810, respectively, for cancer-specific survival at 5 years after nephrectomy. When risk stratified by the Leibovich risk group and UCLA integrated staging system, PLR was a significant prognostic factor only within the intermediate- to high-risk groups. CONCLUSIONS PLR is a robust prognostic marker in nonmetastatic ccRCC that clearly outperforms other inflammatory indexes in those who had undergone nephrectomy. However, its prognostic effect was limited in the low-risk category of ccRCC.

Abstract
Background The combination of red blood cell distribution width and body mass index (COR-BMI) is indicated as a new prognostic index of survival in patients with laryngeal cancer. However, the ability of this prediction in other types of cancer or whether its use can be expanded to non-oncological patients is unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the prediction of prognosis of in-hospital mortality of the COR-BMI in oncological and non-oncological patients. Methods A retrospective study was performed with all hospitalized patients between 2014 and 2016, totaling 2930 patients, 262 oncological and 2668 non-oncological. The COR-BMI was divided into three classes: 0, RDW ≤ 13.1% and BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2; 1, RDW ≤ 13.1% and BMI < 18.5 or ≥ 18.5 but < 25 kg/m2 and RDW > 13.1% and BMI ≥ 18.5 but < 25 or BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2; and 2, RDW > 13.1% and BMI < 18.5 kg/m2. In order to analyze the relationship between COR-BMI and in-hospital mortality in the studied population, the Cox Proportional Hazards Model was used in a multivariate analysis based on a conceptual model. Results The COR-BMI was an independent predictor of in-hospital mortality in non-oncological patients (1 versus 0: HR = 3.34; CI = 1.60–6.96, p = 0.001; 2 versus 0: HR = 3.38; CI = 1.22–9.39, p = 0.019). The survival rate of these patients was lower among those with the highest scores on the COR-BMI. This prediction was not found in oncological patients. Conclusion The present study suggests that the COR-BMI may have its practical use expanded to non-oncological patients as an independent predictor of in-hospital mortality.

Abstract
Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) has been recently demonstrated to be a predictor of inflammation. High pretreatment RDW level is associated with poor survival outcomes in various malignancies, although the results are controversial. We aimed to investigate the prognostic role of RDW. A systematic literature search was performed in MEDLINE and EMBASE till April 2018. Pooled hazard ratios (HRs) were estimated for overall survival (OS) and combined disease-free survival, progression-free survival, and recurrence-free survival (DFS/PFS/RFS). 49 studies with 19,790 individuals were included in the final analysis. High RDW level adversely affected both OS and DFS/PFS/RFS. For solid cancers, colorectal cancer (CRC) had the strongest relationship with poor OS, followed by hepatic cancer (HCC). Negative OS outcomes were also observed in hematological malignancies. Furthermore, patients at either early or advanced stage had inverse relationship between high pretreatment RDW and poor OS. Studies with cut-off values between 13% and 14% had worse HRs for OS and DFS/PFS/RFS than others. Furthermore, region under the curve (ROC) analysis was used widely to define cut-off values and had relatively closer relationship with poorer HRs. In conclusion, our results suggested that elevated pretreatment RDW level could be a negative predictor for cancer prognosis.

Abstract
Background and objective: We investigated the ability of preoperative serum values of red blood cell distribution width (RDW), neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and plateletcrit (PCT) to predict Fuhrman grades (FG) and tumor stages of renal cell carcinoma in patients who underwent radical nephrectomy. Materials and methods: Records of 283 patients that underwent radical or partial nephrectomy of renal masses at our clinic between January 2010 and April 2018, whose pathology results indicated renal cell carcinoma (RCC), and who had their FG and T1–4 N0M0 identified were retrospectively evaluated. The patients were divided into two groups based on their FG as low (I–II) and high (III–IV) and their T stages were similarly grouped as limited to kidney (pT1–pT2) and not limited to kidney (pT3–pT4). Results: Mean RDW, NLR, PCT cut-off values of the patients for FG and T stage were 15.65%, 3.54, 0.28% and 14.35%, 2.69, 0.28%, respectively. The RDW and NLR were determined to be statistically significant predictors of a pathologically high FG, whereas the PCT value was not a statistically significant predictor of high FG (p = 0.003, p = 0.006, p = 0.075, respectively). The relationship of RDW, NLR and PCT values with a limited to the kidney pathological T stage revealed statistically significant correlations for all three values. Conclusions: We determined that only RDW and NLR were markers predicting FG, while PCT had no prognostic value. On the other hand, all three of these values were associated with a limited to the kidney pathological T stage in patients who underwent nephrectomy due to renal masses and whose pathologies suggested RCC.

Abstract
Objective: High levels of red cell distribution width (RDW) may be associated with adverse outcomes in patients with cancer. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the prognostic impact of pretreatment RDW levels on overall survival (OS), cancer-specific survival (CSS), and disease-free survival (DFS) in a large cohort of male laryngeal squamous cell cancer (LSCC) patients. Methods: A total of 809 LSCC patients who were treated between 2007 and 2011 at the Eye & ENT Hospital of Fudan University were enrolled and evaluated retrospectively. OS, CSS, and DFS were analyzed using the Kaplan–Meier method. To evaluate the prognostic significance of RDW levels, univariate, and multivariate Cox analyses were applied. Results: Higher pretreatment RDW levels were significantly associated with high death events, red blood cell count, hemoglobin, radiotherapy, operation therapy, and advanced tumor stage (p < 0.05). From the univariate analysis, we observed that the higher (13.2–13.5%) and the highest (>13.5%) quartiles of RDW level were consistent factors for poor OS, CSS, and DFS in LSCC patients. In the multivariate analysis, after adjusting for confounding factors, the higher and highest quartiles of RDW levels were identified as independent prognostic factors in male LSCC patients. Conclusion: Higher pretreatment RDW levels were demonstrated to be associated with poor clinical outcome in male LSCC patients and might be novel markers for patient stratification in LSCC management.

Abstract
Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) indicates the heterogeneity in the size of circulating red blood cells. Increasing studies showed that RDW may be a diagnostic and prognostic marker in various tumors. To investigate the value of RDW as a biomarker in the diagnosis and prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC), we evaluated 783 newly diagnosed CRC patients, 463 colorectal adenomas (CA) patients, and 331 healthy controls from June 2015 to October 2017 at Fujian Medical University Union Hospital. We found that RDW levels were significantly higher in CRC groups compared with both the CA and healthy control groups (P<0.001). Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) analysis showed that the area under the ROC curve (AUC) for RDW, CEA, and CA19-9 was 0.643, 0.742, and 0.629 in discriminating CRC patients from healthy controls, respectively. When RDW cut-off value of 13.95 was applied, we distinguished CRC patients from healthy controls with a sensitivity of 41% and a specificity of 94%. Moreover, combined detection of RDW, CEA, and CA19-9 appeared to be a better diagnostic performance with a sensitivity of 56% and a specificity of 99%. However, RDW had little diagnostic value in the differential diagnosis between CRC patients and CA patients. More importantly, RDW levels were significantly associated with TNM stage, pT stage, pM stage, and tumor size among CRC patients. Overall, our study suggested that RDW might be an auxiliary biomarker for diagnosis and prognosis of CRC.
