Abstract
Although reference intervals (RIs) play an important role in clinical diagnosis, there remain significant differences with respect to race, gender, age and geographic location. Accordingly, the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) EP28-A3c has recommended that clinical laboratories establish RIs appropriate to their subject population. Unfortunately, the traditional and direct approach to establish RIs relies on the recruitment of a sufficient number of healthy individuals of various age groups, collection and testing of large numbers of specimens and accurate data interpretation. The advent of the big data era has, however, created a unique opportunity to "mine" laboratory information. Unfortunately, this indirect method lacks standardization, consensus support and CLSI guidance. In this review we provide a historical perspective, comprehensively assess data processing and statistical methods, and post-verification analysis to validate this big data approach in establishing laboratory specific RIs.

Abstract
Trace elements are essential nutrients for the optimal growth, development, and health of infants, and the reference intervals (RIs) from these trace elements in the blood are very important for an accurate assessment of the status of the elements. In this study, blood samples from a total of 13,446 infants (7206 boys and 6240 girls) were used, and the copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and iron (Fe) in their blood were determined using atomic absorption spectrometry. After clearing the data and removing any outliers, the gender- and age-specific RIs obtained from the Cu, Zn, Ca, Mg, and Fe in the infants' blood were established according to the principles of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) C28-A3. In the multivariable analysis, after making the relevant adjustments for the confounding factors, the age of the infants showed a significant positive correlation with the concentrations of Zn, Ca, Mg, and Fe found in the blood (p<0.01). Furthermore, there were obvious differences in the Cu, Zn, and Ca levels in the blood according to the gender of the infants (p<0.01). As infants are in the critical period of their growth and development, the gender- and age-specific RIs may provide helpful guidance for the nutritional status of the Cu, Zn, Ca, Mg, and Fe elements in the infants' blood.

Abstract
Background No consensus has been reached on capillary blood reference intervals for platelet parameters in full-term neonates. We aimed to establish neonatal capillary blood reference intervals for platelet parameters and evaluate influences of sex, gestational age and postnatal age on platelet parameters. Methods This study was a prospective investigation and implemented in 594 healthy full-term neonates from 12 to 84 h of age, using SYSMEX XN-9000 haematology automatic analyser by means of capillary blood. Reference intervals for platelet parameters were defined by an interval of 2.5th − 97.5th percentiles. Results Capillary reference interval for platelet count was (152–464) × 109/L. No significance was found between sex-divided reference intervals for platelet parameters. The values of platelet count changed minimally across gestational age (37–41 weeks) and postnatal age (12–84 h). Reference intervals for other platelet parameters were affected by these factors to a different extent. Conclusions We established capillary blood reference intervals for platelet parameters in the first days after birth of full-term neonates in China.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Reference intervals for arterial and venous umbilical cord blood gas (UCBG) parameters are scarce, are mainly focused on pH, pO2, pCO2 and base deficit, and are usually assessed using parametric tests, despite a generally skewed data distribution. Here, the purpose is to determine reference percentiles for nine parameters of concomitant arterial and venous UCBG (CAV-UCBG) from neonates at birth, using nonparametric tests. METHODS Results of CAV-UCBG, assayed over a 4.5-year period, were extracted from a hospital laboratory database for pH, pCO2, pO2, oxygen saturation, concentration of total oxygen, total carbon dioxide, hydrogen carbonate, total haemoglobin, and acid-base excess. Exclusion criteria were: a venous-arterial pH difference <0.02, an arterial-venous pCO2 <0.7 kPa, and a venous pCO2 <2.9 kPa. Nonparametric bivariate kernel density estimations were used for the selection of plots within the 95% percentile surface of the pCO2-to-pH relationship (NBKDE-95P). Outliers from skewed data were removed using an adjusted-Tukey method, and percentiles were calculated according to the CLSI EP28-A3 nonparametric method. RESULTS Overall, 31% (5033/16164) of CAV-UCBG were discarded using the three exclusion criteria. Then, 6% (670/11131) of CAV-UCBG were excluded from the NBKDE-95P, and 0.1 to 3.5% outliers were subsequently removed. Depending on the parameter, the 2.5th and 97.5th percentiles from the whole group were similar or slightly narrower compared to reference intervals from other studies, while those from female and male neonates did not differ substantially. CONCLUSIONS Using an indirect nonparametric approach, this study proposes new percentiles for parameters from concomitant arterial and venous umbilical cord blood gases.
