Mycobacterium leprae: A historical study on the origins of leprosy and its social stigma

This article aims to investigate about the social stigma and the prejudice of society towards the patients with leprosy, but also to understand how this infectious disease has largely influenced human lifestyle and evolution analyzing the evolution of its treatments from past empirical treatments to actual multidrug therapy (MDT). References on leprosy were extensively searched in literature using PubMed, Web of Science, Medline, Springer link and Elsevier's (EMBASE.com) databases, but also in medical, religious and archaeological books. Leprosy's spread all around the world following human paths of migration from the African Continent to the Asian one and to Europe, instead its appearance in the New Continent is more recent. Wars, unhygienic conditions, social and health inequality created conditions for its spread since prehistorical times, and existing health disparities contributed to unequal morbidity and mortality, before its gradual decline after the Middle Ages due to the raise of other worse pandemics. Starting from Renaissance, a deeper knowledge on its pathophysiological mechanisms brought an increasingly advanced combined surgical and pharmacological treatment, but still in modern times many efforts have been made to erase its social stigma, changing its name in "Hansen's disease" included.

A Survey on How Ocular Surface Demodex Infestation Interactively Associates with Diabetes Mellitus and Dry Eye Disease

PURPOSE

Prevention of ocular surface (OS) Demodex infestation plays an important role in OS hygiene and variety of factors may be associated with it, in which diabetes mellitus (DM) or dry eye disease (DED) has caught the attention of most scholars. However, there has been no research on whether there was a potential interaction between DM and DED in the process of OS Demodex infestation. This cross-sectional study was implemented in Zhujiang Hospital of Southern Medical University.

METHODS

Ophthalmologic interviews, questionnaires, and examinations were conducted. Factors including general information, DM status, dry eye condition, etc. were collected to study the correlation of DM and DED on OS Demodex infestation.

RESULTS

After statistical analysis, we found that both DM (P < 0.001) and DED (P = 0.013 < 0.05) are closely associated with OS Demodex infestation. Compared with DED, DM has higher priority association with OS Demodex infestation, and patients with both diseases have a significant higher risk of OS Demodex infestation (R = 0.197, P < 0.001). Meanwhile, age (R = 0.299, P < 0.001) and hypertension (P < 0.05) were also correlated with OS Demodex infestation.

CONCLUSION

This study provides a new evidence-based basis for clinical prevention and management of OS Demodex infestation.

Case Report: Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma Arising From the Ulcer of the Lesions of Dupuytren's Disease on the Palm

Dupuytren's disease is a benign fibromatosis that mainly involves the fascia of the palm and digits. The relationship between Dupuytren's disease and the evolution of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma is still unclear. Here we report the case of a 52-year-old female with squamous cell carcinoma arising from the ulcer of the lesions of Dupuytren's disease on the left palm. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case in the English literature of squamous cell carcinoma on the palm of someone with Dupuytren's disease.

Predictors of quality of life in melanoma patients 4 years after diagnosis: Results of a nationwide cohort study in Germany

In this multicenter, cross-sectional study, 561 melanoma patients completed a questionnaire battery 4 years after primary diagnosis. The proportion of melanoma patients with clinically relevant anxiety (p < .001) or depression (p = .001) symptoms was significantly greater compared to the general population. Lower QoL was predicted by higher depression (ß = -.329, p < .001) and anxiety (ß = -.257, p < .001), older age (ß = -.147, p = .002), and body mass index (ß = -.093, p = .036). Clinical parameters including tumor stage and comorbidity index did not enter the model. Overall, the model explained 32.2% of total variance (F = 43.66, p < .001, corrected R² = .322). The proportion of patients with clinically relevant anxiety symptoms requires attention. Anxiety and depression symptoms contribute to impaired QoL, calling for appropriate screening.

Colorectal cancer immunotherapy: Current clinical studies and prospect of clinical application

Colorectal cancer is a type of malignant gastrointestinal cancer with a high incidence rate. Current treatments, mostly surgery and chemotherapy, have not improved the 5-year survival rate of the patients significantly. About one-third of patients died of metastatic colorectal cancer eventually. Cancer immunotherapy has received more and more attention in recent years and become a hot research topic. Immunotherapy includes a variety of methods with an aim at improving the patient's own immune system and anti-tumor ability to control and kill tumor cells by the use of modern bio-technology. It has become the fourth form of cancer treatment after surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. This paper expounds the types of tumor immunotherapy, their applications in colorectal cancer, and the advantages and disadvantages of different methods of immunotherapy. In particular, we discuss the relationship between inflammation microenvironment and immunotherapy, and the relationship between chemotherapy, radiation and immunotherapy in colorectal cancer. Immunotherapy may become an important component of individualized treatment for colorectal cancer in the near future.
