Abstract
Food and fluid supply is fundamental for optimal athletic performance but can also be a risk factor for caries, dental erosion, and periodontal diseases, which in turn can impair athletic performance. Many studies have reported a high prevalence of oral diseases in elite athletes, notably dental caries 20-84%, dental erosion 42-59%, gingivitis 58-77%, and periodontal disease 15-41%, caused by frequent consumption of sugars/carbohydrates, polyunsaturated fats, or deficient protein intake. There are three possible major reasons for poor oral health in athletes which are addressed in this review: oxidative stress, sports diet, and oral hygiene. This update particularly summarizes potential sports nutritional effects on athletes' dental health. Overall, sports diet appropriately applied to deliver benefits for performance associated with oral hygiene requirements is necessary to ensure athletes' health. The overall aim is to help athletes, dentists, and nutritionists understand the tangled connections between sports diet, oral health, and oral healthcare to develop mitigation strategies to reduce the risk of dental diseases due to nutrition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The kidneys carry out many essential processes. A reduced glomerular filtration rate is the primary cause of renal failure. Patients with chronic kidney disease are significantly increasing all around the world. Patients with varying degrees of renal disease will be seen on the dental chair, and the dentist must be aware of dental considerations when treating such patient. Dental clinicians should carefully evaluate the oral findings and general condition of the renal disease patient. OBJECTIVE To increase the awareness of dentists in the dental management of patients with renal diseases or undergoing renal transplant. METHODS This study reviews 56 articles searched on two databases PubMed and Google Scholar with English language. CONCLUSION Every dentist should be well-informed regarding dental considerations and oral manifestations when treating a patient with any renal disease. Simple treatment plan modification can prevent the evolution of mild to critical medical or dental complications in renal disease patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Teachers are central to the well-being of a community. Being an influential part of society, their role can be broadened to promote oral health and healthy oral hygiene habits. This study was aimed at the assessment of the oral health status and treatment needs of school teachers in Indore City. METHOD A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out over a period of five months on 470 school teachers working in various government schools of Indore city selected through random sampling technique. The modified WHO Oral Health Assessment Form for Adults 2013 was used to record oral health status and treatment needs, while the WHO Questionnaire for Adults 2013 was used to document oral hygiene practices, dietary habits, and deleterious habits. Data was analyzed using IBM SPSS Version 25 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). Chi-square test, independent t-test, and one-way ANOVA were used. RESULTS The gender distribution of the representative sample showed female predominance. The prevalence of smokeless tobacco consumption was 5.1% among the study subjects. The mean number of Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT) was 3.45 ± 3.10, and the mean number of 1.52 ± 2.40 teeth showed the presence of bleeding. Around 37.2% had shallow pockets of 4-5 mm. A mean number of 4.26 ± 1.97 sextants showed 0-3 mm attachment loss. There was a significant association between the frequency and technique of toothbrushing with a decayed number of teeth (p<0.001). CONCLUSION High proportion of dental caries and periodontal disease was seen which could be related to their oral health care-seeking behavior and the impairment related to age changes.

Abstract
Food and nutrients play a pivotal role in the development of dentition and oral health. While diet includes the overall forms of consumed foods, the nutrients include specific micro- (vitamins and minerals) and macro- (carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids) nutrients. As much as the assimilation of macro and micronutrients depends on proper oral health for ingesting food, oral health, in turn, depends on the availability of nutrients in the food so ingested. Age, certain medical conditions, socioeconomic status, and overall changes in the evolution of society determine the type of diet which in turn influences oral health. This article has touched upon certain salient aspects of these nutrients and their bearing on overall oral health and development.

Abstract
The present study was conducted to analyze the erosive potential of the ever-increasing consumption of carbonated drinks on the dental surface. To identify relevant studies, a comprehensive search was conducted on PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science covering the last 5 years (2018–2023) using the following Boolean keywords: “soft drinks AND tooth”. Finally, a total of 19 studies were included. The initial search provided a total of 407 items. Nineteen records were finally involved in the inclusion phase, seven of which were in vivo and twelve in vitro. An abuse of carbonated acid substances leads to an increase in the possibility of dental erosion with consequent structural disintegration and reduction of the physical and mechanical properties of the enamel. There is thus greater bacterial adhesion on rougher surfaces, determined by the erosive process, and therefore a greater risk of caries. The pH of most commercialized carbonated drinks is lower than the critical pH for the demineralization of the enamel. Carbonated drinks’ pH and duration of exposure have different deleterious effects on enamel.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Zinc plays essential roles in immune function and epithelial integrity. Patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) often have low plasma zinc levels because of poor intake and diarrhea. We hypothesized that patients with zinc deficiency before HSCT had worse infectious complications after HSCT compared with patients with normal zinc levels. Citrulline, a marker of intestinal integrity, was also hypothesized to be lower in patients with zinc deficiency. PATIENTS AND METHODS Thirty patients undergoing HSCT at Ramathibodi Hospital during March 2020-September 2021 were enrolled. Blood samples for plasma zinc and citrulline were collected during the HSCT period. The 14- and 90-day outcomes after HSCT were prospectively recorded. RESULTS Twelve of 30 (40%) patients had zinc deficiency before HSCT. Zinc-deficient patients were younger (median (interquartile range): 6 (8.8) vs 13 (5.8) years old; p = 0.017). Zinc levels tended to increase after admission in both groups. Patients with zinc deficiency had lower citrulline levels than those with normal zinc levels. Citrulline levels decreased in both groups after stem cell infusion, and the level was not significantly different between the two groups. Zinc-deficient patients had a higher rate of bacterial infection within 90 days after HSCT than those with normal zinc levels (6 in 12 patients (50.0%) vs 1 in 18 patients (5.6%); odds ratio [OR]: 17.0; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.68-171.70; p = 0.016). This remained significant after adjustments for age (adjusted OR: 12.31; 95% CI: 1.084-139.92; p = 0.043). CONCLUSION The prevalence of zinc deficiency in pediatric patients undergoing HSCT was high. Zinc-deficient patients had lower citrulline levels and higher incidence of bacterial infection after HSCT. However, citrulline level was not different between patients with and without bacterial infections. It is worth to investigate whether zinc supplementation before HSCT can reduce bacterial infection after HSCT.

Abstract
Oral health is fundamental to our well-being, especially in adolescence. The aim of this study is to investigate oral hygiene knowledge through a questionnaire in a sample of adolescents, paying particular attention to those wearing orthodontic braces. The study was designed as a descriptive report of a local survey. An anonymous questionnaire was distributed to individuals born between 2000 and 2005, both on paper and online. Among 213 adolescents answering the questionnaire, 206 went to the dentist at least once (most of them between 5 and 9 years old), and 144 experienced at least one session of professional oral hygiene. Approximately 83% of the sample brushed their teeth at least twice a day, while only 7% used dental floss daily. Only 54% of respondents wearing orthodontic braces were advised to undergo professional oral hygiene during their orthodontic treatment. Education on oral hygiene at home came only from their parents for 61% of the whole sample. Most respondents had their first visit to the dentist apparently too late. Flossing was rare, whether the adolescents wore orthodontic braces or not. In many cases, professional oral hygiene was not common during orthodontic treatment. Adolescents did not learn about oral hygiene from a dental specialist.

Abstract
Life expectancy as a measure of population health does not reflect years of healthy life. The average life expectancy in the Asia-Pacific region has more than doubled since 1900 and is now above 70 years. In the Asia-Pacific region, the proportion of aged people in the population is expected to double between 2017 and 2050. Increased life expectancy leads to an increase in non-communicable diseases, which consequently affects quality of life. Suboptimal nutritional status is a contributing factor to the prevalence and severity of non-communicable diseases, including cardiovascular, cognitive, musculoskeletal, immune, metabolic and ophthalmological functions. We have reviewed the published literature on nutrition and healthy ageing as it applies to the Asia-Pacific region, focusing on vitamins, minerals/trace elements and omega-3 fatty acids. Optimal nutritional status needs to start before a senior age is reached and before the consequences of the disease process are irreversible. Based on the nutritional status and health issues in the senior age in the region, micronutrients of particular importance are vitamins A, D, E, C, B-12, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids. The present paper substantiates the creation of micronutrient guidelines and proposes actions to support the achievement of optimal nutritional status as contribution to healthy ageing for Asia-Pacific populations.

Abstract
Introduction: Micronutrients play a potent role in the functioning of the different systems of the organism. It is necessary to sustain an adequate status of the micronutrients for maintaining the optimal condition of the oral cavity. The aim: Toemphasize the importance of different micronutrients for the normal functioning of the oral cavity, as well as their influence on the occurrence of various diseases of the soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity. Conclusion: Micronutrients such as vitamin C, B9 and E, calcium, zinc, copper and iron have a role in development so as anti-inflammatory and antioxidants properties Deficiency of certain micronutrients plays an important role in the development of periodontitis and caries. People with chronic inflammatory bowel disease, as well as children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, are usually deficient in these vitamins and therefore often susceptible to the development of inflammatory changes in soft tissues of oral cavity , periodontitis and caries.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lingual linear lesions (LLLs) are the oral linear lesions located on the dorsum, lateral borders, and/or ventral surface of tongue. It has been suggested that LLLs might be an early clinical sign of vitamin B12 deficiency. Here, a retrospective study was conducted to further investigate and validate the association between LLL and vitamin B12 deficiency. METHODS Based on the clinical examination, patients with LLLs were enrolled and analyzed retrospectively. Data regarding clinical and laboratory features were obtained. Follow-up was done at least 6 months following appropriate supplementation therapy. RESULTS A total of 57 patients, consisting of 20 males and 37 females with a mean age of 59.12 years (range, 18-80), were enrolled in this study. The hematological examination revealed that 56 (98.25%) of the 57 patients had severe serum vitamin B12 deficiency, and the other 1 patient had a borderline low level of vitamin B12 . All the enrolled patients responded well to cobalamin replacement therapy. CONCLUSION LLLs might be a clinical sign strongly suggestive of severe vitamin B12 deficiency.

Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the association between serum zinc levels and major subjective symptoms in zinc deficiency patients with chronic liver disease. 578 patients with chronic liver disease were enrolled. The patients, whose serum zinc level of <80 µg/dl, completed a questionnaire to determine whether they had subjective symptoms of the five conditions (taste disorder, aphthous stomatitis, dermatitis, alopecia, and anorexia). Then, the association between these subjective symptoms and serum zinc levels was analyzed. In total, 193 patients (33.4%) experienced any subjective symptoms. The prevalence of each symptom was as follows: 36 patients with taste disorder (6.2%), 46 with aphthous stomatitis (8.0%), 77 with dermatitis (13.3%), 46 with alopecia (8.0%), and 53 with anorexia (9.2%). In total, 70.8%, 34.1%, and 26.1% patients with serum zinc levels of <40, ≥40 to <60, and ≥60 to <80 µg/dl, respectively, had these symptoms. When zinc deficiency was defined as a serum zinc level of <80 µg/dl, approximately one-third of patients displayed symptoms presumably originating from zinc deficiency. As serum zinc levels decreased, the prevalence of these symptoms increased. Dermatitis, especially, was relevant to zinc.

Abstract
AIM In Japan, no zinc preparation had been approved for therapeutic purposes before March 2017. Zinc acetate hydrate was recently approved for the treatment of hypozincemia. We evaluated the efficacy and safety of treatment with zinc acetate hydrate. METHODS A total of 97 patients with cirrhosis complicated by hypozincemia were treated with zinc acetate hydrate, and their serum zinc normalization rates; factors contributing to normalization; changes in blood ammonia levels; branched-chain amino acids-to-tyrosine ratios; levels of albumin, hemoglobin, alkaline phosphatase, serum copper, and iron; incidence of adverse events; improvement in subjective symptoms; and serum zinc levels taken at 3 months post-treatment were determined. RESULTS The cumulative serum zinc normalization rates, when normalization was defined as achievement of a serum zinc level ≥80 μg/dL, after 2, 4, and 6 months of treatment were 64.9%, 80.3%, and 82.5%, respectively. Multivariate analysis identified an albumin level of ≥3.3 g/dL and branched-chain amino acids to tyrosine ratio of ≥3.46 as factors contributing to zinc normalization within 3 months of treatment. Treatment resulted in a significant decrease in blood ammonia and serum copper levels, and significant increases in branched-chain amino acids-to-tyrosine ratios and alkaline phosphatase levels. Seven (7.2%) patients prematurely discontinued treatment due to hypocupremia. By the end of treatment, subjective symptoms had resolved in 46.2% of patients. By 3 months post-treatment, serum zinc levels had reverted to levels close to those at baseline. CONCLUSIONS Treatment with zinc acetate hydrate resulted in normalization of serum zinc levels at a high rate. The main reasons for discontinuation of treatment included hypocupremia.

Abstract
This review discusses the personalised dietary approach with respect to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It identifies gene–nutrient interactions associated with the nutritional deficiencies that people with IBD commonly experience, and the role of the Western diet in influencing these. It also discusses food intolerances and how particular genotypes can affect these. It is well established that with respect to food there is no “one size fits all” diet for those with IBD. Gene–nutrient interactions may help explain this variability in response to food that is associated with IBD. Nutrigenomic research, which examines the effects of food and its constituents on gene expression, shows that—like a number of pharmaceutical products—food can have beneficial effects or have adverse (side) effects depending on a person’s genotype. Pharmacogenetic research is identifying gene variants with adverse reactions to drugs, and this is modifying clinical practice and allowing individualised treatment. Nutrigenomic research could enable individualised treatment in persons with IBD and enable more accurate tailoring of food intake, to avoid exacerbating malnutrition and to counter some of the adverse effects of the Western diet. It may also help to establish the dietary pattern that is most protective against IBD.

Abstract
Oral health is integral to general health. The oral cavity may harbor manifestations of systemic disease and can be the harbinger of early onset. Primary care providers (PCPs) can therefore use the oral cavity to support working diagnoses. Conversely, systemic diseases and treatments can affect oral health and require interactions between PCPs and dental providers. Acute oral manifestations of systemic disease may involve teeth and/or gums. This article reviews oral and systemic disease connections for some diseases, identifies issues that benefit patients through medical-dental collaboration, and highlights some nondental oral injuries that might confront PCPs or emergency medical providers.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between hematinic deficiencies and recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). Material and Methods 517 RAS patients and 187 healthy controls were enrolled in the present study. Hematinic deficiencies, including serum ferritin, folic acid, and vitamin B12 deficiencies were assessed for each participant. Gender and age were taken into account and the collected data were statistically analysed. Results Compared with the healthy controls, a significantly higher overall frequency of hematinic deficiencies was found in RAS patients (p<0.001). When gender and age were taken into account, significant differences in hematinic deficiencies were observed among RAS patients. Serum ferritin deficiency was much more common in young and middle-aged female RAS patients (age<60). Serum folate deficiency and serum vitamin B12 deficiency were both much more common in the young adult group of male RAS patients (21–40 years of age). Logistic regression analysis revealed that both gender and age have significant correlation with the presence of hematinic deficiencies in the RAS patients. Conclusions Significant variations in hematinic deficiencies were demonstrated in RAS patients across different genders and age groups. We suggest that further studies on the hematinic deficiencies of RAS patients should take into account the gender and age of participants. Abstract
BACKGROUND Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is an ulcerative disease of the oral mucosa without a clearly defined etiology. The aim of the study was to evaluate the serum zinc levels in patients with RAS in comparison to healthy controls and to validate the association between zinc levels and the course of RAS. METHODS Seventy-five patients with RAS and 72 controls underwent full dental examination. Serum zinc levels were determined by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (F AAS). The results were statistically analyzed with Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney, chi-square tests and the test of difference between the two rates of structure with p < 0.05 as a significance level (Statistica 10, StatSoft®). RESULTS No statistically significant differences were detected in serum zinc levels between RAS patients and healthy controls. The mean serum zinc concentration was found to be 84.2 μg/dL in RAS group and 83.9 μd/dL in controls, within the accepted norms. Zinc deficiency was observed in 10.7% patients from the RAS group and in 6.9% controls. No significant differences in serum zinc levels were found between patients when the course of the disease was considered. CONCLUSIONS Serum zinc concentrations did not differ significantly in RAS patients and in healthy controls and it did not influence the course of the disease. Therefore, zinc does not appear to be an important modifying factor in the development of RAS.

Abstract
The list of immunodeficiency diseases grows each year as novel disorders are discovered, classified, and sometimes reclassified due to our ever-increasing knowledge of immune system function. Although the number of patients with secondary immunodeficiencies (SIDs) greatly exceeds those with primary immunodeficiencies (PIDs), the prevalence of both appears to be on the rise probably because of scientific breakthroughs that facilitate earlier and more accurate diagnosis. Primary immunodeficiencies in adults are not as rare as once thought. Globally, the main causes of secondary immunodeficiency are HIV infection and nutritional insufficiencies. Persons with acquired immune disorders such as AIDS caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are now living long and fulfilling lives as a result of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Irrespective of whether the patient's immune-deficient state is a consequence of a genetic defect or is secondary in nature, dental and medical practitioners must be aware of the constant potential for infections and/or expressions of autoimmunity in these individuals. The purpose of this review was to study the most common conditions resulting from primary and secondary immunodeficiency states, how they are classified, and the detrimental manifestations of these disorders on the periodontal and oral tissues.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Chronic methamphetamine (MA) users experience many dental problems, a condition characterized as "meth mouth." These devastating effects on dentition is the main reason why many seek professional help. Here, we discuss the effects of MA on oral health and advocate for improved collaboration between dentists and mental health providers. We also introduce a dental evaluation tool with the goal of improving the quality of care for this often-marginalized patient population. METHODS A Medline literature search (1985-2016) was conducted with keywords "meth mouth," "methamphetamine AND oral health"; "methamphetamine AND dental"; "methamphetamine AND dentist." Results were supplemented by references gleaned from recent reviews, credible online sources, and citations of search returns. RESULTS MA predisposes users to tooth decay. They are also more likely to have missing dentition with a linear relationship correlating the number of years of use. A constellation of dental symptoms resulting from chronic MA use has been described in literature: gingival inflammation, excessive tooth wear, decreased salivary output, and severe dental caries. With continued use, mucosal lesions may appear on the lips and the gingival tissue may recede. MA can trigger bruxism, resulting in severe wear patterns and even cracked teeth. CONCLUSIONS Users of MA have many unmet medical and mental health needs. An interdisciplinary approach between dentists and mental health providers can improve outcomes. The dental evaluation tool described here can improve the bidirectional collaboration between mental health and dentistry. Dental professionals are in a unique position to identify users and can facilitate referral to substance abuse treatment. Likewise, mental health providers can identify, assess severity, and prompt users for medical and dental attention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This article represents the first systematic review entirely dedicated toward a disease called oral ulceration with bone sequestration (OUBS). We performed this review in order to further define and outline this disease. A secondary interest was to recognize the prevalence and importance of OUBS in relation to other oral disorders accompanied by ulceration and bone exposure. MATERIAL AND METHODS The systematic review was registered with PROSPERO (registration number CRD42015024294) and performed in cooperation with Harvard's Countway Library. Searches were built using MeSH terms and proximity operators previously mentioned in OUBS descriptions. Database searches were performed through EMBASE, Medline, and PubMed, followed by a handsearch of bibliographies for relevant articles. Articles were assessed against eligibility and inclusion criteria centering on bone exposure without known etiologic cause. We sought to gather information on patient age, sex, anatomical location, clinical presentation, and comorbidities. PRISMA guidelines were followed. RESULTS The searches identified 766 records total. Despite considerable inspection, we found only 8 articles qualifying for our review. In the 8 articles, there were a total of 24 patients fulfilling the criteria of OUBS. Although some abstracts mentioned idiopathic nature, most authors presented clinical cases with probable causes to ulceration and sequestration. The mean age of these patients was 43.21 ± 11.94 years. The male to female ratio was 3:1. The predominant area of occurrence was the mandible (n = 23, 95.8%). CONCLUSION The representation of OUBS in the literature remains scarce. More data must be generated and gathered on the concept of OUBS so as to determine the true incidence and importance of this disease. Despite rare occurrences of conditions characterizing OUBS, the recent discussion of this topic in the scientific community calls for more knowledge to be brought forth, with great benefit to patients suffering from ulcerative diseases and osteonecrosis.

Abstract
Acute phase proteins enhance antioxidant defenses; they are involved in the activation of complement components, opsonization and increase in platelet aggregation as well as inhibition of the respiratory burst in the course of inflammation. Malnutrition plays an important role in the course of response of acute phase proteins. The role of nutrients as antioxidants or as key components of antioxidant enzymes is commonly known. In the course of various inflammatory states, including oral diseases, disorders are observed in caloric requirements of the organism and the requirements for specific amino acids. Numerous experimental studies in animals have also confirmed the relationship between protein- calorie malnutrition and hypofunction of the salivary glands. Studies in children with malnutrition syndrome showed a significantly lower volume of saliva compared to properly nourished children. Depleted nutritional reserves due to long-term chronic malnutrition cause a significant reduction in resistance, progressive damage to the oral mucosa, and reduce resistance to colonization and invasion of pathogenic microorganisms.

Abstract
An unhealthy diet has been implicated as risk factors for several chronic diseases that are known to be associated with oral diseases. Studies investigating the relationship between oral diseases and diet are limited. Therefore, this study was conducted to describe the relationship between healthy eating habits and oral health status. The dentistry has an important role in the diagnosis of oral diseases correlated with diet. Consistent nutrition guidelines are essential to improve health. A poor diet was significantly associated with increased odds of oral disease. Dietary advice for the prevention of oral diseases has to be a part of routine patient education practices. Inconsistencies in dietary advice may be linked to inadequate training of professionals. Literature suggests that the nutrition training of dentists and oral health training of dietitians and nutritionists is limited.
