Abstract
The Short Bowel Syndrome (SBS) Registry (NCT01990040) is a multinational real-world study evaluating the long-term safety of teduglutide in patients with SBS and intestinal failure (SBS-IF) in routine clinical practice. This paper describes the study methodology and baseline characteristics of adult patients who have (ever-treated) or have never (never-treated) received teduglutide. A total of 1411 adult patients (679 ever-treated; 732 never-treated) were enrolled at 124 sites across 17 countries. The mean (standard deviation [SD]) age at enrollment was 55.4 (15.46) years, and 60.2% of patients were women. Crohn's disease was the most common cause of major intestinal resection in both ever-treated (34.1%) and never-treated patients (20.4%). A similar proportion of ever-treated and never-treated patients had a prior history of colorectal polyps (2.7% vs. 3.6%), whereas proportionally fewer ever-treated patients reported a history of colorectal cancer (1.8% vs. 6.2%) or any malignancy (17.7% vs. 30.0%) than never-treated patients. Never-treated patients received a numerically greater mean (SD) volume of parenteral nutrition and/or intravenous fluids than ever-treated patients (12.4 [8.02] vs. 10.1 [6.64] L/week). Ever-treated patients received a mean teduglutide dosage of 0.05 mg/kg/day. This is the first report of patient baseline characteristics from the SBS Registry, and the largest cohort of patients with SBS-IF to date. Overall, ever-treated and never-treated patients had similar baseline characteristics. Differences between treatment groups may reflect variations in patient selection and degree of monitoring.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Home parenteral nutrition (HPN) prescriptions should be individualised in adults with chronic intestinal failure (IF). The aims of the review were to explore HPN requirements and available guidelines and to determine whether adults (≥ 18 years) receive recommended parenteral nutrient doses. METHODS Online databases searches identified empirical evidence (excluding case-reports), reviews and guidelines (Published 2006-2024 in English language). Additional reference lists were hand-searched. Older studies, cited in national guidelines were highlighted to map evidence source. Two reviewers screened 1660 articles independently, with 98 full articles assessed and 78 articles included (of which 35 were clinical studies). Citation tracking identified 12 older studies. RESULTS A lack of evidence was found assessing parenteral macronutrient (amounts and ratios to meet energy needs), fluid and electrolyte requirements. For micronutrients, 20 case series reported serum levels as biomarkers of adequacy (36 individual micronutrient levels reported). Studies reported levels below (27 out of 33) and above (24 out of 26) reference ranges for single micronutrients, with associated factors explored in 11 studies. Guidelines stated recommended parenteral dosages. Twenty-four studies reported variable proportions of participants receiving HPN dosages outside of guideline recommendations. When associated factors were assessed, two studies showed nutrient variation with type of HPN administered (multichamber or individually compounded bags). Five studies considered pathophysiological IF classification, with patients with short bowel more likely to require individualised HPN and more fluid and sodium. CONCLUSIONS This review highlights substantial evidence gaps in our understanding of the parenteral nutritional requirements of adult receiving HPN. The conclusions drawn were limited by temporal bias, small samples sizes, and poor reporting of confounders and dose. Optimal HPN nutrient dose still need to be determined to aid clinical decision-making and further research should explore characteristics influencing HPN prescribing to refine dosing recommendations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Comprehensive follow-up data from the largest hospital district in Finland was used to assess hospital-based healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) and expenses, incidence and prevalence, survival, and effect of comorbidities/complications on survival of adult patients with intestinal failure due to short bowel syndrome (SBS-IF). METHODS This study utilized electronic healthcare data covering all ≥18-year-old patients with SBS-IF at the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa in Finland between 2010 and 2019. Patients were followed from SBS-IF onset until the end of 2020 or death and compared to birth year and sex-matched control patients without SBS-IF. RESULTS The study included 77 patients with SBS-IF (cases) and 363 controls. Cases had high HCRU; the cumulative expenses were about tenfold compared to the controls, at the end of the study (€123,000 vs. €14,000 per patient). The expenses were highest during the first year after SBS-IF onset (€53,000 per patient). Of the cases with a median age 62.5 years, 51.9% died during study time. The median survival was 4.4 years from SBS-IF onset and cases died 13.5 times more likely during the follow-up compared to controls. Mortality risk was lower in female cases (hazard ratio (HR) 0.46; 95% confidence intervals (CI) 0.24, 0.9) and higher with presence of comorbidities (Charlson comorbidity index HR 1.55; 95% CI 1.2, 2.0) and mesenteric infarction (HR 4.5; 95% CI 1.95, 10.36). The incidence of adult SBS-IF was 0.6 per 100,000 adults. CONCLUSION Our study demonstrates a high demand for healthcare support and elevated mortality in adult SBS-IF-patients. Our results suggest that the presence of comorbidities is a key driver for mortality.

Abstract
Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is a rare condition, the main symptom of which is malabsorption following extensive resection of the small intestine. Treatment for SBS is mainly supportive, consisting of supplementation, prevention and treatment of complications, and promotion of intestinal adaptation. While development of parenteral nutrition and drugs promoting intestinal adaptation has improved clinical outcomes, the prognosis of patients with SBS remains poor. Intestinal transplantation is the only curative therapy but its outcome is unsatisfactory. In the absence of definitive therapy, novel treatment is urgently needed. With the advent of intestinal organoids, research on the intestine has developed remarkably in recent years. Concepts such as the "tissue-engineered small intestine" and "small intestinalized colon," which create a functional small intestine by combining organoids with other technologies, are potentially novel regenerative therapeutic approaches for SBS. Although they are still under development and there are substantial issues to be resolved, the problems that have prevented establishment of the complex function and structure of the small intestine are gradually being overcome. This review discusses the current treatments for SBS, the fundamentals of the intestine and organoids, the current status of these new technologies, and future perspectives.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS In 2016, ESPEN published the guideline for Chronic Intestinal Failure (CIF) in adults. An updated version of ESPEN guidelines on CIF due to benign disease in adults was devised in order to incorporate new evidence since the publication of the previous ESPEN guidelines. METHODS The grading system of the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) was used to grade the literature. Recommendations were graded according to the levels of evidence available as A (strong), B (conditional), 0 (weak) and Good practice points (GPP). The recommendations of the 2016 guideline (graded using the GRADE system) which were still valid, because no studies supporting an update were retrieved, were reworded and re-graded accordingly. RESULTS The recommendations of the 2016 guideline were reviewed, particularly focusing on definitions, and new chapters were included to devise recommendations on IF centers, chronic enterocutaneous fistulas, costs of IF, caring for CIF patients during pregnancy, transition of patients from pediatric to adult centers. The new guideline consist of 149 recommendations and 16 statements which were voted for consensus by ESPEN members, online in July 2022 and at conference during the annual Congress in September 2022. The Grade of recommendation is GPP for 96 (64.4%) of the recommendations, 0 for 29 (19.5%), B for 19 (12.7%), and A for only five (3.4%). The grade of consensus is "strong consensus" for 148 (99.3%) and "consensus" for one (0.7%) recommendation. The grade of consensus for the statements is "strong consensus" for 14 (87.5%) and "consensus" for two (12.5%). CONCLUSIONS It is confirmed that CIF management requires complex technologies, multidisciplinary and multiprofessional activity, and expertise to care for the underlying gastrointestinal disease and to provide HPN support. Most of the recommendations were graded as GPP, but almost all received a strong consensus.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Teduglutide is a synthetic glucagon-like peptide-2 analogue approved for the treatment of short bowel syndrome associated with chronic intestinal failure (SBS-IF) in adult patients. Clinical trials have demonstrated its ability to reduce parenteral support (PS) requirement. This study aimed to describe the effect of 18-month treatment with teduglutide, evaluating PS and factors associated with PS volume reduction of ≥20% from baseline and weaning. Two-year clinical outcomes were also assessed. METHODS This descriptive cohort study collected data prospectively from adult patients with SBS-IF treated with teduglutide and enrolled in a national registry. Data were collected every 6 months and included demographics, clinical, biochemical, PS regimen, and hospitalizations. RESULTS Thirty-four patients were included. After 2 years, 74% (n = 25) had a PS volume reduction of ≥20% from baseline, and 26% (n = 9) achieved PS independency. PS volume reduction was significantly associated with longer PS duration, significantly lower basal PS energy intake, and absence of narcotics. PS weaning was significantly associated with fewer infusion days, lower PS volume, longer PS duration, and lower narcotics use at baseline. Alkaline phosphatase was significantly lower in weaned patients after 6 and 18 months of treatment. During the 2-year study duration, patients who had PS volume reduction of ≥20% had significantly fewer yearly hospitalizations and hospital-days. CONCLUSIONS Teduglutide reduces PS volume and promotes weaning in adults with SBS-IF. Lack of narcotics and longer PS duration were associated with PS volume reduction and weaning, and lower baseline PS volume and fewer infusion days were favorable in obtaining enteral autonomy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM In short bowel syndrome, insufficient absorptive capacity of the remnant bowel may lead to metabolic and nutritional consequences including electrolyte disturbances, severe diarrhea and malnutrition. While intestinal failure requires parenteral nutrition, short bowel patients with intestinal insufficiency (SB/II) have achieved oral autonomy. The aim of this exploratory study was to assess the nutritional, muscular and functional status of orally compensated SB/II patients. METHODS 28 orally compensated SB/II patients with a mean of 46 months after termination of parenteral nutrition and 56 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HC) were compared regarding anthropometric parameters, body composition using bioelectrical impedance analysis, handgrip strength and gait speed, blood parameters as well as nutritional intake and physical activity using validated questionnaires. Malnutrition and sarcopenia were diagnosed according to the criteria of the GLIM or EWGSOP2. RESULTS SB/II patients had lower body mass index (BMI) and anthropometric parameters than HC but were within the normal weight range. The GLIM algorithm operationally diagnosed malnutrition in 39% (n = 11) of SB/II patients. Reduced skeletal muscle mass index and phase angle were rarely accompanied by a reduction of handgrip strength below cut-off values and the subsequent diagnosis of sarcopenia in SB/II patients (15%, n = 4). Compared to 11% of HC, 37% of SB/II patients had low physical activity level. Female SB/II patients had higher caloric and macronutrient intake. Caloric intake negatively correlated with body weight indicating compensatory hyperphagia in patients with lower body weight. Some of the SB/II patients showed signs of dehydration. CONCLUSIONS Orally compensated SB/II patients are thinner than HC but have mostly normal BMI. Malnutrition is frequently diagnosed but may be overestimated due to the underlying malabsorption and its interplay with hyperphagia. Muscle mass is often reduced but is rarely accompanied by functional impairment leading to sarcopenia diagnosis. Thus, SB/II patients long term after termination of parenteral support may be malnourished but usually do not develop sarcopenia.

Abstract
Short bowel syndrome (SBS)-associated intestinal failure (IF) is a complex, life-threatening condition that requires complex care of multiple factors impacting the patient's long-term prognosis. Various etiologies result in SBS-IF, with three primary anatomical subtypes occurring following intestinal resection. Depending on the extent and segment(s) of the intestine resected, malabsorption can be nutrient specific or sweeping; however, such issues and the associated prognosis for the patient can be predicted with analysis of the residual intestine, along with baseline nutrient and fluid deficits and extent of malabsorption. The provision of parenteral nutrition/intravenous (PN-IV) fluids and antisymptomatic agents is fundamental; however, optimal management should focus on intestinal rehabilitation, wherein intestinal adaptation is prioritized and PN-IV fluids are weaned over time. Key strategies to maximize intestinal adaptation include hyperphagic consumption of an individualized SBS diet and the appropriate use of trophic agents, such as a glucagon-like peptide 2 analog.

Abstract
Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is the most common cause of chronic intestinal failure, requiring home parenteral support (intravenous fluid, parenteral nutrition, or parenteral nutrition with intravenous fluid) to compensate for severe malabsorption. The loss of mucosal absorptive area after extensive intestinal resection is accompanied by an accelerated transit and hypersecretion. Changes in physiology and clinical outcomes differ between patients with SBS with or without the distal ileum and/or colon-in-continuity. This narrative review summarizes the treatments used in SBS, with a focus on novel approaches with intestinotrophic agents. During the early postoperative years, spontaneous adaptation occurs and can be induced or accelerated with conventional therapies, which include dietary and fluid modifications and antidiarrheal and antisecretory drugs. Based on the proadaptive role of enterohormones (eg, glucagon-like peptide [GLP]-2), analogues have been developed to allow enhanced or hyperadaptation after a period of stabilization. Teduglutide is the first GLP-2 analogue developed and commercialized with proadaptive effects resulting in reduced parenteral support needs; however, the potential for weaning of parenteral support is variable. Whether early treatment with enterohormones or accelerated hyperadaptation would further improve absorption and outcomes remains to be shown. Longer-acting GLP-2 analogues are currently being investigated. Encouraging reports with GLP-1 agonists require confirmation in randomized trials, and dual GLP-1 and GLP-2 analogues have yet to be clinically investigated. Future studies will prove whether the timing and/or combinations of different enterohormones will be able to break the ceiling of intestinal rehabilitation in SBS.

Abstract
Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is a rare disorder with known physical, psychosocial, and economic burdens and significant morbidity and mortality. Many individuals with SBS require long-term home parenteral nutrition (HPN). The incidence and prevalence of SBS is difficult to determine because it is often based on HPN usage and may not account for those who receive intravenous fluids or achieve enteral autonomy. The most common etiologies associated with SBS are Crohn's disease and mesenteric ischemia. Intestinal anatomy and remnant bowel length are prognostic for HPN dependency, and enteral autonomy confers a survival advantage. Health economic data confirm that PN-related costs are higher for hospitalizations than at home; yet significant healthcare resource utilization is necessary for successful HPN, and patients and families report substantial financial distress that impacts quality of life (QOL). An important advancement in QOL measurement is the validation of HPN- and SBS-specific QOL questionnaires. In addition to the known factors negatively impacting QOL, such as diarrhea, pain, nocturia, fatigue, depression, and narcotic dependency, research has shown that the volume and number of PN infusions per week is associated with QOL. Although traditional QOL measurements describe how underlying disease and therapy influence life, they do not assess how symptoms and functional limitations affect the QOL of patients and caregivers. Patient-centered measures and conversation focused on psychosocial issues helps patients with SBS and HPN dependency better cope with their disease and treatment. This article presents a brief overview of SBS, including epidemiology, survival, costs, and QOL.

Abstract
The term "short bowel syndrome (SBS)" defines "the clinical feature associated with a remaining small bowel in continuity of less than 200 cm from the ligament of Treitz" and is characterized by malabsorption, diarrhea, fatty stools, malnutrition, and dehydration. SBS is the primary pathophysiological mechanism of chronic intestinal failure (CIF), defined as the "reduction of gut function below the minimum necessary for the absorption of macronutrients and/or water and electrolytes, such that intravenous supplementation (IVS) is required to maintain health and/or growth" in a metabolically stable patient. By contrast, the reduction of gut absorptive function that does not require IVS has been termed "intestinal insufficiency or deficiency" (II/ID). The classification of SBS can be categorized as follows: anatomical (anatomy and length of the residual bowel), evolutional (early, rehabilitative, and maintenance phases), pathophysiological (SBS with or without a colon in continuity), clinical (with II/ID or CIF), and severity of CIF (type and volume of the required IVS). Appropriate and homogeneous patient categorization is the mainstay of facilitating communication in clinical practice and in research.

Abstract
Intestinal failure is defined as the inability to absorb the minimum of macro and micronutrients, minerals and vitamins due to a reduction in gut function. In a subpopulation of patients with a dysfunctional gastrointestinal system, treatment with total or supplemental parenteral nutrition is required. The golden standard for the determination of energy expenditure is indirect calorimetry. This method enables an individualized nutritional treatment based on measurements instead of equations or body weight calculations. The possible use and advantages of this technology in a home PN setting need critical evaluation. For this narrative review, a bibliographic search is performed in PubMed and Web of Science using the following terms: 'indirect calorimetry', 'home parenteral nutrition', 'intestinal failure', 'parenteral nutrition', 'resting energy expenditure', 'energy expenditure' and 'science implementation'. The use of IC is widely embedded in the hospital setting but more research is necessary to investigate the role of IC in a home setting and especially in IF patients. It is important that scientific output is generated in order to improve patients' outcome and develop nutritional care paths.

Abstract
Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is a rare gastrointestinal condition that is defined as having less than 200 cm of remaining small intestine. SBS results from extensive surgical resection and is associated with a high risk for intestinal failure (IF) with a need for parenteral support (PS). Depending on the region of intestinal resection, three different main anatomy types can be distinguished from each other. In this review, we synthesize the current knowledge on the role of the colon in the setting of SBS-IF with a colon-in-continuity (SBS-IF-CiC), e.g., by enhancing the degree of intestinal adaptation, energy salvage, and the role of the microbiota. In addition, the effect of the disease-modifying treatment with glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP-2) analogs in SBS-IF-CiC and how it differs from patients without a colon will be discussed. Overall, the findings explained in this review highlight the importance of preservation of the colon in SBS-IF.

Abstract
The differences in outcomes after weaning off intravenous support (IVS) for chronic intestinal failure (IF) are unclear. Adult IF patients who are weaned off IVS at a tertiary care center (June 2019−2022) were included in this study, and nutritional and functional markers were assessed before, during, and after weaning. Short bowel syndrome (SBS) was present in 77/98 of the IF patients, with different outcomes according to the final anatomy. The body weight and the BMI increased during IVS in those with a jejunocolonic (JC) anastomosis (p < 0.001), but weight loss was significant during follow-up (p < 0.001). Malnutrition was present in >60%, with a reduced muscle mass, which was found using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), in >50% of SBS-JC patients. Although reduced hand-grip strength and sarcopenia were less common, the muscle quality, or phase angle (BIA), decreased during follow-up, also correlating with serum albumin and muscle mass (p ≤ 0.01). The muscle quality and albumin were low in the patients restarting IVS, which was only the case with ≤60 cm of small bowel. Closer follow-up and earlier treatment with teduglutide (TED) should be considered in these patients, as none of the TED-treated patients were malnourished or sarcopenic. Studies on the potential benefits of nutritional and physical interventions for low muscle mass and associations with outcomes are needed in chronic IF patients.

Abstract
Small intestinal transplantation has emerged as an essential treatment for intestinal failure, but its relatively high graft rejection rate and mortality rate when compared to those of other transplanted organs has led to difficulties in post-transplantation treatment management. The recently-developed technique of creating organoids from somatic stem cells has created a challenging opportunity to develop a treatment that involves the creation of a substitute small intestine using autologous cells instead of transplanting another individual's small intestines. The remaining partial large intestine is then used as a segmental graft, and autologous small intestinal organoid transplantation is conducted on its epithelium in order to create a pedunculated hybrid graft. This is a new surgical technique for interposing with the original ileocecal region. The hybrid large intestine acquires both the lymphatic vessels that are involved in nutrient absorption and the original peristaltic function of the large intestine.This lecture touches upon the history of the development of organoid medicine, after which an introduction is provided of the revolutionary surgical technique in which a functional small intestine is created by regenerating autologous cells.The content here was introduced in a special lecture (online) at the 29th Congress of the Experimental Surgical Session of the Hungarian Surgical Society (Host: Dr. Norbert Nemeth, 9/9/2022, Budapest).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Current guidelines recommend that patients with chronic intestinal failure (CIF) should be managed by a multidisciplinary team (MDT). However, the characteristics of real-world IF centers and the patients they care for are lacking. The study aims to describe IF center characteristics as well as characteristics of patients with CIF across different global regions. METHODS This is an international multicenter study of adult IF centers using a survey. The questionnaire survey included questions regarding program and patient characteristics. Thirty-three investigational centers were invited to participate. Each center was asked to answer the survey questions as one MDT. RESULTS The survey center response rate was 91%. The median number of patients with CIF per center was 128 (range, 30-380). The most common disciplines reported were gastroenterologist (93%), dietitian (90%), nurse (83%), and advanced practitioner (nurse practitioner and physician assistant, 77%). There were centers that did not have a pharmacist, surgeon, psychologist, and social worker (30%, 37%, 60%, and 70%, respectively). The median full-time equivalents (FTEs) per 100 patients were 1.1 for nurses, 1 for dietitians, 1 for advanced practitioners, and 0.9 for gastroenterologists. Short bowel syndrome was the most common cause of CIF (50%) followed by intestinal dysmotility (20%). CONCLUSION The majority of centers were managing around 100 patients with CIF. Despite the widespread use of the MDT, there are some variances in team characteristics. Gastroenterologists were the most common physicians supporting MDTs. In IF centers, one FTE of each core discipline was supported to manage 100 patients with CIF.

BACKGROUND This study investigated the prevalence, characteristics, and management of patients with chronic intestinal failure (CIF) in the USA in 2012-2020, based on parenteral support (PS) prescription claims and healthcare utilization. METHODS Patients with CIF were identified from the Integrated DataVerse® claims database if they had at least two PS prescriptions within six months and a relevant diagnosis. Analysis included prevalence and characteristics of patients with CIF, their travel distance to receive PS prescriptions, and the distribution of PS providers and their prescribing history. RESULTS Up to 24,048 patients with CIF were identified, equivalent to 75 patients per million. CIF affected people of all ages, being more prevalent in women than in men. Many providers signed PS orders for small patient groups over short time periods, whereas few providers signed PS orders for large patient groups long term, indicating a lack of centralization. The distribution of PS providers suggested a disparity in healthcare coverage in rural vs urban areas, leading to patients traveling considerable distances to receive PS prescriptions. This may be exacerbated by a decline of providers with expertise in CIF and nutrition. CONCLUSIONS Healthcare disparities for patients with CIF have likely been obscured by the lack of CIF-specific diagnostic and procedure codes, obliging providers to code for their patients under other codes. Effective policy changes, including centralized care, revision of reimbursement models, and expansion of nutrition-focused education in addition to the newly introduced International Classification of Diseases codes, are needed to provide the best care for patients. CLINICAL RELEVANCY STATEMENT CIF affects people of all ages and is more prevalent in women than in men. Healthcare coverage for patients with CIF is largely decentralized. Disparities are evident in rural compared to urban areas, leading to patients traveling considerable distances to receive PS prescriptions, which may be exacerbated by a decline of providers with expertise in CIF and nutrition. These healthcare inequalities necessitate effective policy changes, including introduction of CIF-specific diagnostic and procedure codes, such as the ongoing introduction of unique ICD codes for CIF and associated diseases, revision of reimbursement models and assurance of the continuity of providers with expertise in CIF and nutrition (eg, by expansion of nutrition-focused education in medical schools). Importantly, improvements in healthcare centralization are required to secure management of patients by highly experienced multidisciplinary teams throughout the USA. Abstract
Intestinal failure (IF) is the inability of the gut to absorb necessary water, macronutrients, micronutrients, and electrolytes sufficient to sustain life and requiring intravenous supplementation or replacement. IF Types 1 and 2 are the initial phase of this condition and usually last for weeks to a few months. Type 3 IF (also known as chronic IF [CIF]) is a chronic and stable condition, usually irreversible, whose main treatment is home parenteral nutrition. CIF is a relatively rare condition, and its prevalence and different causes vary throughout the world. Due to its complexity, CIF requires a multidisciplinary team with experience in this field to achieve successful outcomes. This editorial aims to provide an overview of CIF in adults, emphasizing the challenges faced by clinicians when managing this rare entity, as well as outlining the role of the gastroenterologist.

Abstract
Background: The European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism database for chronic intestinal failure (CIF) was analyzed to investigate factors associated with nutritional status and the intravenous supplementation (IVS) dependency in children. Methods: Data collected: demographics, CIF mechanism, home parenteral nutrition program, z-scores of weight-for-age (WFA), length or height-for-age (LFA/HFA), and body mass index-for-age (BMI-FA). IVS dependency was calculated as the ratio of daily total IVS energy over estimated resting energy expenditure (%IVSE/REE). Results: Five hundred and fifty-eight patients were included, 57.2% of whom were male. CIF mechanisms at age 1−4 and 14−18 years, respectively: SBS 63.3%, 37.9%; dysmotility or mucosal disease: 36.7%, 62.1%. One-third had WFA and/or LFA/HFA z-scores < −2. One-third had %IVSE/REE > 125%. Multivariate analysis showed that mechanism of CIF was associated with WFA and/or LFA/HFA z-scores (negatively with mucosal disease) and %IVSE/REE (higher for dysmotility and lower in SBS with colon in continuity), while z-scores were negatively associated with %IVSE/REE. Conclusions: The main mechanism of CIF at young age was short bowel syndrome (SBS), whereas most patients facing adulthood had intestinal dysmotility or mucosal disease. One-third were underweight or stunted and had high IVS dependency. Considering that IVS dependency was associated with both CIF mechanisms and nutritional status, IVS dependency is suggested as a potential marker for CIF severity in children.
