Abstract
Although vitamin D insufficiency has been correlated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), there are few data on the association between 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and atherogenic indices predictive of CVD. This study investigated the relationship of vitamin D status with lipid profile and atherogenic indices in adult women in Morocco. Three hundred women aged 18 to 50 years from Meknes were included. Fasting 25(OH)D and lipid concentrations were assayed by a one-step electrochemiluminescence-based immunoassay and an enzymatic method, respectively. Atherogenic indices (atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), atherogenic coefficient (AC), non-HDL cholesterol (non-HDL-C), Castelli risk indices I and II (CRI-I and II), and CHOLIndex (CI)) were calculated using conventional lipid parameters. Logistic regression models and operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis were used to assess the relationship of the variables and estimate the threshold of 25(OH)D levels associated with high atherogenic indices. 25(OH) D below 20 ng/mL was significantly associated with an enhanced risk of hypertriglyceridemia and elevated values of AIP, AC, non-HDL-C, and CRI-I with an OR (95% CI) of 4.904 (1.856-12.959), 3.637 (2.149-6.158), 3.589 (1.673-7.700), 2.074 (1.215-3.540), and 2.481 (1.481-4.123), respectively. According to the ROC analysis, the likelihood of hypertriglyceridemia and high values of AIP, AC, non-HDL-C, and CRI-I were associated with 25(OH)D thresholds ≤15.15 ng/mL, ≤17.5 ng/mL, ≤19.8 ng/mL, ≤20.1 ng/mL, and ≤19.5 ng/mL, respectively, all p < 0.01. Based on the atherogenic indices, this study indicates that vitamin D below 20 ng/mL may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease in adult women. Additional health measures are essential to raise awareness among women and health professionals of preventing and controlling cardiovascular risk factors, particularly among young individuals.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause of morbidity/mortality world-wide, hence preventive interventions are crucial. Observational data showing beneficial CV effects of vitamin supplements, promoted by self-proclaimed experts, have led to ~50% of Americans using multivitamins; this practice has culminated into a multi-billion-dollar business. However, robust evidence is lacking, and certain vitamins might incur harm. This two-part review focuses on the attributes or concerns about specific vitamin consumption on CVD. The evidence for indiscriminate use of multivitamins indicates no consistent CVD benefit. Specific vitamins and/or combinations are suggested, but further supportive evidence is needed. Data presented in Part 1 indicated that folic acid and certain B-vitamins may decrease stroke, whereas niacin might raise mortality; beta-carotene mediates pro-oxidant effects, which may abate the benefits from other vitamins. In Part 2, data favor the anti-oxidant effects of vitamin C and the anti-atherogenic effects of vitamins C and E, but clinical evidence is inconsistent. Vitamin D may provide CV protection, but data are conflicting. Vitamin K appears neutral. Thus, there are favorable CV effects of individual vitamins (C/D), but randomized/controlled data are lacking. An important caveat regards the potential toxicity of increased doses of fat-soluble vitamins (A/D/E/K). As emphasized in Part 1, vitamins might benefit subjects who are antioxidant-deficient or exposed to high levels of oxidative-stress (e.g., diabetics, smokers, and elderly), stressing the importance of targeting certain subgroups for optimal results. Finally, by promoting CV-healthy balanced-diets, we could acquire essential vitamins and nutrients and use supplements only for specific indications.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Vitamin D deficiency is one of the most common nutritional disorders in most countries of the world. The present study was designed and implemented with the aim of investigating the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and the level of adipokines, atherogenesis indicators and factors related to metabolic syndrome. METHODS This case-control study was done on 195 patients with metabolic syndrome aged 20-50 y who attended the health centers in Zabol County, northeast Iran, between April 2021 and January 2022. Anthropometric and biochemical parameters were measured for all subjects with standard methods. To determine serum 25(OH)D levels, we used enzymatic linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits. Atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) was calculated as log (TG/HDL-c). The visceral adiposity index (VAI) and the lipid accumulation product (LAP) were estimated according to standard formulas. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Participants in the case group had lower serum levels of 25(OH)D compared to controls (19.8 ± 6.2 ng/ml vs. 41.2 ± 9.7ng/ml, P<0.001). We found that the mean serum levels of fasting blood sugar (P=0.023) and TG (P=0.008) as well as HOMA-IR (P=0.023) were significantly higher in the cases compared to controls. Also, patients with MetS and vitamin D insufficiency (cases) had higher AIP (P=0.040) and LAP (P=0.012) than controls. Furthermore, serum 25(OH)D levels showed significant inverse correlations with serum RBP-4 and a positive correlation with serum omentin-1 concentrations. The results of the present study showed that vitamin D deficiency correlated with some of the cardiometabolic risk factors among the patients with MetS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have been reported that vitamin D deficiency increased the risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Nonetheless, the exact mechanisms underlying this association is unclear. Besides, inflammation and deregulation of adipokines secretion have been recognized as pivotal factors that contribute to the pathogenesis of these conditions. Therefore, we assessed whether serum vitamin D status is associated with serum levels of adipokines and inflammatory markers in these patients. METHODS This case-control study was carried out among 65 patients with MetS who had vitamin D insufficiency (cases) and 130 MetS patients who had vitamin D sufficiency (controls). Cases and controls were recruited from among those referred to health centers in Zabol County, Iran. Vitamin D insufficiency was regarded as a serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentration below 30 ng/ml. Serum concentrations of leptin, adiponectin, visfatin, and resistin and also adiponectin/leptin ratio along with serum levels of interleukin 6 (IL-6), IL-10 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), were evaluated. RESULTS Serum levels of leptin, resistin, and TNF-α were significantly higher, whereas, serum adiponectin and adiponectin/leptin ratio were significantly lower in cases than the controls. There was no significant difference in serum visfatin, IL-6, and IL-10 between the groups. Serum levels of 25(OH)D were inversely correlated with leptin, resistin, and TNF-α in both unadjusted models and after adjustment for potential confounders. CONCLUSION Our findings indicated that vitamin D insufficiency in MetS patients is associated with increased inflammation and serum adipokine abnormalities which may be associated with developing metabolic complications in these patients.

Abstract
Adults with obesity are at higher risk for developing hypovitaminosis D. Some studies suggest that reduced levels of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) may also be related to disorders in cardiometabolic parameters. However, because of the association between 25(OH)D and obesity, we hypothesized that body composition can be a confounding factor in the association of 25(OH)D with cardiometabolic parameters, and that 25(OH)D is inversely associated with body composition and cardiometabolic parameters and directly associated with fat intake. The aim of this study was to analyze the associations between 25(OH)D with body composition, fat intake, and cardiometabolic parameters in adults with obesity. This cross-sectional study consisted of 52 adults with obesity (61.53% female; 37.50 ± 6.88 years; body mass index [BMI]: 33.60 ± 2.89 kg/m2). Cardiometabolic parameters (fasting blood glucose, insulin resistance index, C-reactive protein, blood pressure, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, and cholesterol), body mass, BMI, waist circumference, body fat percentage, and fat intake were evaluated. Body mass was negatively associated with 25(OH)D (β = -0.108; P = .048; and R² = 0.090) and BMI (β = -0.621; P = .031; and R² = 0.103), both adjusted for fat intake. 25(OH)D was positively associated with fat intake (β = 0.129; P = .045 and R² = 0.078) adjusted for sex, age, and skin color. Cardiometabolic parameters were not associated with 25(OH)D, even after adjusted by body composition variables. However, the high prevalence of hypovitaminosis D (75%) and the negative association between 25(OH)D and body composition reinforce the importance of analyzing and monitoring vitamin D status in this population.
