Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Malnutrition negatively affects the prognosis and quality of life of hospitalized patients. However, there are several gaps between evidence-based knowledge and current clinical practice. Our primary aim was to describe the prevalence of malnutrition risk in a cohort of in a cohort of older inpatients; secondly, we explored its predictors and its independent impact on 12-month survival. METHODS Prospective study focused on patients aged 65 years and older consecutively admitted for any reason to the acute geriatric and general medical units of an Italian university hospital. Comprehensive geriatric assessment data, including the short form of the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA-SF), were collected within 48 hours of admission. The prevalence of malnutrition and risk of malnutrition according to the MNA-SF represented the main outcome. Correlations among clinical variables, nutritional status, and one-year survival were analyzed using multivariable and Cox models. RESULTS Among 594 patients (median age: 84 years, 49.5 % female), mostly living at home with moderate functional autonomy, 82.3 % were identified as probably malnourished or at risk of malnutrition according to MNA-SF (39.9 % and 42.4 %, respectively). Malnutrition and the risk of malnutrition were positively associated with living alone at home (OR 2.803, 95%CI 1.567-5.177, p < 0.001), and negatively associated with autonomy in IADL (OR 0.765, 95%CI 0.688-0.846, p < 0.001) and the best performance at HST (OR 0.901, 95%CI 0.865-0.936; p < 0.001). After 12 months, 31.8 % of patients was dead and mortality was positively correlated with malnutrition according to MNA-SF (OR 2.493, 95%CI 1.345-4.751, p = 0.004), institutionalization (OR 2.815, 95%CI 1.423-5.693, p = 0.003) and severe cognitive impairment (OR 1.701, 95%CI 1.031-2.803, p = 0.036). CONCLUSION Malnutrition is common among older inpatients upon admission, primarily influenced by their functional and cognitive status, and it is linked to a worse prognosis. Early incorporation of thorough nutritional and functional assessments into clinical practice is crucial to improve prognosis prediction and enable timely, focused interventions targeting modifiable causal factors in a patient-centered approach.

Abstract
BACKGROUNDS & AIMS Malnutrition is prevalent among hospitalized patients in developed countries, contributing to negative health outcomes and increased healthcare costs. Timely identification and management of malnutrition are crucial. The lack of a universally accepted definition and standardized diagnostic criteria for malnutrition has led to the development of various screening tools, each with varying validity. This complicates early identification of malnutrition, hindering effective intervention strategies. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to identify the most valid and reliable nutritional screening tool for assessing the risk of malnutrition in hospitalized adults. METHODS A systematic literature search was conducted to identify validation studies published from inception to November 2023, in the Pubmed/MEDLINE, Embase, and CINAHL databases. This systematic review was registered in INPLASY (INPLASY202090028). The risk of bias and quality of included studies were assessed using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies version 2 (QUADAS-2). Meta-analyses were performed for screening tools accuracy using the symmetric hierarchical summary receiver operative characteristics models. RESULTS Of the 1646 articles retrieved, 60 met the inclusion criteria and were included in the systematic review, and 21 were included in the meta-analysis. A total of 51 malnutrition risk screening tools and 9 reference standards were identified. The meta-analyses assessed four common malnutrition risk screening tools against two reference standards (Subjective Global Assessment [SGA] and European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism [ESPEN] criteria). The Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST) vs SGA had a sensitivity (95% Confidence Interval) of 0.84 (0.73-0.91), and specificity of 0.85 (0.75-0.91). The MUST vs ESPEN had a sensitivity of 0.97 (0.53-0.99) and specificity of 0.80 (0.50-0.94). The Malnutrition Screening Tool (MST) vs SGA had a sensitivity of 0.81 (0.67-0.90) and specificity of 0.79 (0.72-0.74). The Mini Nutritional Assessment-Short Form (MNA-SF) vs ESPEN had a sensitivity of 0.99 (0.41-0.99) and specificity of 0.60 (0.45-0.73). The Nutrition Universal Screening Tool-2002 (NRS-2002) vs SGA had a sensitivity of 0.76 (0.58-0.87) and specificity of 0.86 (0.76-0.93). CONCLUSIONS The MUST demonstrated high accuracy in detecting malnutrition risk in hospitalized adults. However, the quality of the studies included varied greatly, possibly introducing bias in the results. Future research should compare tools within a specific patient population using a valid and universal gold standard to ensure improved patient care and outcomes.

Abstract
Malnutrition (MN) is a highly prevalent condition in the elderly. It is associated with functional impairment, disability, frailty, and sarcopenia. The aim was to analyze the capacity of GLIM and ESPEN criteria to diagnose MN in a sample of institutionalized psychogeriatric patients. Clinical and anthropometric data were collected in a cross-sectional study. Patients' frailty, dependence, functional capacity, MNA, hand-grip strength (HS), and sarcopenia were evaluated. Body composition (BC) was estimated by conventional bioimpedance analysis. MN diagnosis was established using the ESPEN and the GLIM criteria based on fat-free mass index (GLIM-FFMI), appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (GLIM-ASMMI), skeletal muscle mass index (GLIM-SMMI), and HS (mGLIM). Ninety-two patients (57.6% men; mean age: 79.4 years) were studied. Depending on the diagnosis criteria, MN prevalence was between 25% (ESPEN) and 41.3% (GLIM-SMMI). Agreement between ESPEN and all GLIM criteria was poor, but it was excellent between all GLIM criteria (kappa > 0.8). Phenotypic criteria carried more weight in the diagnosis of MN than etiological ones. Depending on the parameter used, the prevalence of reduced muscle mass was notably different. Differences in BMI, BC, inflammation, and albumin are detected by the GLIM-FFMI criteria in the MN and non-MN subjects. Also, this criterion is the only one that identified differences in phase angle (PhA) between these groups. In the elderly, PhA can be very useful to monitor nutritional status.

Abstract
Objectives Malnutrition and sarcopenia often co-exist in older patients. This condition, called co-MS, shows a worse prognosis than either condition alone but is often overlooked and undertreated. We aimed to clarify the prevalence of co-MS and its associated factors with a focus on prescription in a long-term nursing care facility in Japan. Methods Patients aged >65 years who resided in a long-term nursing care facility in Hyogo, Japan, were recruited for this cross-sectional study, which was conducted from July 1 to July 30, 2022. Sarcopenia and malnutrition were diagnosed using the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia and Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition criteria, respectively. Patients who met both criteria were classified as having co-MS. Potentially associated factors, including age, sex, length of stay, activities of daily living, comorbidity, oral function and hygiene, swallowing ability, and the number and type of prescriptions, were assessed. Results The prevalence of sarcopenia was 92 % (72/78). All malnourished patients were sarcopenic (40.3 %) and were classified as having co-MS. Oral function and hygiene, swallowing ability, comorbidity, and the presence of potentially inappropriate medications showed significant associations in univariate analyses. Of particular note, potentially inappropriate medication was an independent factor in the multivariate analysis. Conclusions Co-MS is prevalent in long-term nursing care facilities; thus, healthcare workers should pay attention to relevant factors to identify patients at risk of co-MS and to provide appropriate care and intervention.

Abstract
Introduction Gastroparesis (GP) is a chronic debilitating gastric motility disorder defined as delayed emptying of the stomach content without mechanical obstruction. It can result in nutritional deficiencies, leading to poor overall outcomes. We assessed the impact of malnutrition on in-hospital outcomes in patients with gastroparesis. Methods Patients with a primary discharge diagnosis of GP between January 2016 and December 2019 were included in the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database. Data on patient demographics, hospital characteristics, the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), and the etiology of gastroparesis were collected. The association between malnutrition and outcomes, including mortality, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), sepsis, acute kidney injury (AKI), length of stay (LOS), and total hospitalization charges (THC), were analyzed using the multivariate regression model. Results A total of 182,580 patients with gastroparesis were included in the analysis. Patients with gastroparesis and malnutrition had a higher risk of mortality (adjusted odds ratio {aOR}, 3.29; p<0.001), sepsis (aOR, 0.43; p<0.001), DVT (aOR, 2.34; p<0.001), and PE (aOR, 2.68; p<0.001) compared to patients with gastroparesis without malnutrition. No significant difference was noted in the rates of AKI. Patients with malnutrition also had a prolonged LOS (2.96 days; p<0.001) and higher THC ($22,890; p<0.001) compared to patients without malnutrition. Conclusion Gastroparesis patients with malnutrition are at a greater risk of worse outcomes than those without malnutrition. The early identification of malnutrition in gastroparesis patients can predict morbidity and mortality and assist in risk stratification to enhance outcomes. Further studies are encouraged to identify factors associated with malnutrition in gastroparesis and the impact of interventions to prevent and treat malnutrition.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Nutrition plays a vital role in promoting skin integrity and supporting tissue repair in the presence of chronic wounds such as pressure injuries (PIs). Individuals who are malnourished are at greater risk of polymorbid conditions, adverse clinical outcomes, longer hospital lengths of stay, PI development, and mortality, and incur increased healthcare costs compared with patients who are adequately nourished. In addition, some patient populations tend to be more vulnerable to PI formation, such as neonates, patients with obesity, older adults, and individuals who are critically ill. Accordingly, this article aims to review the latest nutrition care recommendations for the prevention and treatment of PIs, including those recommendations tailored to special populations. A secondary objective is to translate nutrition recommendations into actionable steps for the healthcare professional to implement as part of a patient plan of care.Implementing an evidence-based plan of care built around individualized nutrition interventions is an essential step supporting skin integrity for these populations. The 2019 Prevention and Treatment of Pressure Ulcers/Injuries: Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) affirms that meeting nutrient requirements is essential for growth, development, maintenance, and repair of body tissues. Many macronutrients and micronutrients work synergistically to heal PIs. Registered dietitian nutritionists play an important role in helping patients identify the most nutrient dense foods, protein supplements, and oral nutrition supplements to meet their unique requirements.

Malnutrition in hospitalized patients heavily affects several clinical outcomes. The prevalence of malnutrition increases with age, comorbidities, and intensity of care in up to 90% of old populations. However, malnutrition frequently remains underdiagnosed and undertreated in the hospital. Thus, an accurate screening to identify patients at risk of malnutrition or malnourishment is determinant to elaborate a personal nutritional intervention. Several definitions of malnutrition were proposed in the last years, affecting the real frequency of nutritional disorders and the timing of intervention. Diagnosis of malnutrition needs a complete nutritional assessment, which is often challenging to perform during a hospital stay. For this purpose, various screening tools were proposed, allowing patients to be stratified according to the risk of malnutrition. The present review aims to summarize the actual evidence in terms of diagnosis, association with clinical outcomes, and management of malnutrition in a hospital setting.

Abstract
In this cross-sectional analysis of 61 postmenopausal osteoporosis patients who regularly visited an osteoporosis outpatient clinic, we aimed to clarify the prevalence of sarcopenia and its related clinical factors. Of 61 patients (mean age 77.6 ± 8.1 years), 24 (39.3%) had osteosarcopenia and 37 (60.7%) had osteoporosis alone. Age, nutritional status, and the number of prescribed drugs were associated with the presence of sarcopenia (p = 0.002, <0.001, and 0.001, respectively), while bone mineral density (BMD) and % young adult mean BMD were not (p = 0.119 and 0.119, respectively). Moreover, patients with osteosarcopenia had lower quality of life (QOL) scores, greater postural instability, and a higher incidence of falls in the past year than patients with osteoporosis alone. In contrast, BMD status showed no correlation with the nutritional status, QOL score, postural instability, or incidence of falls in the past year. In conclusion, the incidence of sarcopenia was relatively high among postmenopausal osteoporosis female patients in an osteoporosis outpatient clinic. Our results suggest that in addition to routine BMD evaluation, assessment and management of sarcopenia may be promoted at osteoporosis outpatient clinics to limit the risk of falls and prevent consequent fragility fractures in osteoporosis patients.

Abstract
Features associated with malnutrition are poorly elucidated in pediatric cancer care. We aimed to better understand characteristics associated with weight-for-height (WHZ) and height-for-age (HAZ) changes for infants and young children during cancer treatment. This retrospective study included 434 patients diagnosed <3 years old from 2007 to 2015 at a large pediatric cancer center. Patients starting treatment outside our center, those with relapsed or secondary malignancies, or with inaccurate information were excluded. Abstracted weights and heights for a 24-month period after treatment initiation were converted to sex-specific and age-specific z scores. Although not statistically different at baseline, patients with hematologic malignancies gained weight over time, while other tumor types did not. Higher treatment intensity and younger age at diagnosis increased odds of clinically significant weight loss. Older children had higher HAZ at diagnosis and HAZ also significantly decreased over time for all examined risk factors, which is distinctly different from patterns in WHZ over time. In conclusion, WHZ and HAZ are affected differently by cancer treatment in infants and young children. We identify key risk factors for weight loss and growth stunting which will be necessary to develop prospective trials to examine anthropometric, biochemical, and patient recorded outcomes around nutrition.

Prevalence and Associated Factors of Coexistence of Malnutrition and Sarcopenia in Geriatric Rehabilitation. Nutrients 2021; 13:nu13113745. Abstract
Malnutrition and sarcopenia often coexist in rehabilitation patients, although they are often overlooked and undertreated in clinical practice. This cross-sectional study aimed to clarify the prevalence of the coexistence of malnutrition and sarcopenia (Co-MS) and its associated factors in convalescent rehabilitation wards in Japan. Consecutive patients aged ≥ 65 years in convalescent rehabilitation wards between November 2018 and October 2020 were included. Malnutrition and sarcopenia were determined by the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria and the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS 2019) criteria, respectively. Patients who presented both with malnutrition and sarcopenia were classified as Co-MS. Potentially associated factors included age, sex, days from onset to admission of rehabilitation wards, reason for admission, pre-morbid functional dependency, comorbidity, activities of daily living, swallowing ability, and oral function and hygiene. The prevalence of malnutrition, sarcopenia, and Co-MS was calculated. Binary logistic regression analyses were performed to compute odds ratios (ORs) and the 95% confidence interval (CI) of possible associated factors for each condition. Overall, 601 patients were eligible for the analysis (median 80 years old, 355 female patients, 70% cerebrovascular disease). Co-MS, malnutrition, and sarcopenia were found in 23.5%, 29.0%, and 62.4% of the enrolled patients, respectively. After adjustment, onset–admission interval (OR = 1.04; 95% CI = 1.02 to 1.06), hospital-associated deconditioning (OR = 4.62; 95% CI = 1.13 to 18.8), and swallowing ability (Food Intake LEVEL Scale) (OR = 0.83; 95% CI = 0.73 to 0.93) were identified as independent explanatory factors of Co-MS. In conclusion, Co-MS was prevalent in geriatric rehabilitation patients; thus, healthcare professionals should be aware of the associated factors to detect the geriatric rehabilitation patients who are at risk of both malnutrition and sarcopenia, and to provide appropriate treatments.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Nutritional assessment can early identify patients who are malnourished and at risk of malnutrition. To examine the effect of nutritional status on wound healing in elderly burn patients, we used the MNA-SF to measure the nutritional status of elderly patients. This study aimed to examine the role of MNA-SF in elderly burn patients through the correlation analysis of wound-healing indicators and MNA-SF score. DESIGN Prospective observational and cross-sectional study. METHODS This study used the MNA-SF to investigate the elderly burn patients at the department of burn. According to the score, the patients fell into three groups: good nutritional status (more than 12 points), malnutrition risk (8~11 points), and malnutrition (0~7 points). At the same time, we measured and compared the wound-healing indicators among the three groups of patients, and detected the correlation. RESULTS The statistical analysis found gender had a slight influence on the score of nutritional status. While age was negatively correlated with the MNA-SF score and nutrition-related indicators. There was a low positive linear correlation between the wound healing percent area change or wound healing rate of patients and the score of the MNA-SF. CONCLUSION This study finds malnutrition is common among hospitalized elderly burn patients. The application of the MNA-SF in elderly burn patients is efficient and accurate to identify malnutrition early and prevent further obstruction of the normal wound healing, which can provide reference points for early nutrition intervention programs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Most nutritional assessment tools are based on pre-defined questionnaires or consensus guidelines. However, it has been postulated that population data can be used directly to develop a solution for assessing malnutrition. This study established a machine learning (ML)-based, individualized decision system to identify and grade malnutrition using large-scale data from cancer patients. METHODS This was an observational, nationwide, multicenter cohort study that included 14134 cancer patients from five institutions in four different geographic regions of China. Multi-stage K-means clustering was performed to isolate and grade malnutrition based on 17 core nutritional features. The effectiveness of the identified clusters for reflecting clinical characteristics, nutritional status and patient outcomes was comprehensively evaluated. The study population was randomly split for model derivation and validation. Multiple ML algorithms were developed, validated and compared to screen for optimal models to implement the cluster prediction. RESULTS A well-nourished cluster (n = 8193, 58.0%) and a malnourished cluster with three phenotype-specific severity levels (mild = 2195, 15.5%; moderate = 2491, 17.6%; severe = 1255, 8.9%) were identified. The clusters showed moderate agreement with the Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment and the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition criteria. The severity of malnutrition was negatively associated with the nutritional status, physical status, quality of life, and short-term outcomes, and was monotonically correlated with reduced overall survival. A multinomial logistic regression was found to be the optimal ML algorithm, and models built based on this algorithm showed almost perfect performance to predict the clusters in the validation data. CONCLUSIONS This study developed a fusion decision system that can be used to facilitate the identification and severity grading of malnutrition in patients with cancer. Moreover, the study workflow is flexible, and might provide a generalizable solution for the artificial intelligence-based assessment of malnutrition in a wider variety of scenarios.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Malnutrition is prevalent in hospital, and the Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) has been widely used for its identification. However, in the last decade, new tools were proposed by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics-American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (AND-ASPEN), European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) and Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM). The diagnostic test accuracy of these tools has been scarcely investigated. Thus, we aimed to compare the accuracy of AND-ASPEN, ESPEN and GLIM for malnutrition diagnosis in hospitalised patients. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted with hospitalised patients aged ≥ 18 years from a five-unit complex hospital. Malnutrition was diagnosed within 48 h of admission using SGA, AND-ASPEN, ESPEN and GLIM. The accuracy of these tools was evaluated by the area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curve, considering SGA as reference, which was compared by the DeLong test. RESULTS Six hundred patients (55.7 ± 14.8 years, 51.3% male) were evaluated. AND-ASPEN [AUROC 0.846; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.810-0.883] and GLIM presented a satisfactory accuracy (AUROC 0.842; 95% CI, 0.807-0.877), whereas ESPEN had a substantially lower accuracy (AUROC, 0.572; 95% CI, 0.522-0.622). The AUROC of AND-ASPEN and GLIM were not different from each other (p = 0.785) and both had significantly higher accuracy than ESPEN (p < 0.001). AND-ASPEN and GLIM presented sensitivity, specificity and negative predictive value > 80%, whereas ESPEN sensitivity was < 20%. CONCLUSIONS AND-ASPEN and GLIM were accurate methods for diagnosing malnutrition and could be applied in hospitalised patients. By contrast, the ESPEN criteria had unsatisfactory accuracy.

Abstract
This nutrition consensus document is the first to coordinate the efforts of three professional organizations - the Brazilian Association of Nutrition (Asbran), the Brazilian Society of Nephrology (SBN), and the Brazilian Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (Braspen/SBNPE) - to select terminology and international standardized tools used in nutrition care. Its purpose is to improve the training delivered to nutritionists working with adult patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Eleven questions were developed concerning patient screening, care, and nutrition outcome management. The recommendations set out in this document were developed based on international guidelines and papers published in electronic databases such as PubMed, EMBASE(tm), CINHAL, Web of Science, and Cochrane. From a list of internationally standardized terms, twenty nutritionists selected the ones they deemed relevant in clinical practice involving outpatients with CKD. The content validity index (CVI) was calculated with 80% agreement in the answers. The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) framework was used to assess the strength of evidence and recommendations. A total of 107 terms related to Nutrition Assessment and Reassessment, 28 to Diagnosis, nine to Intervention, and 94 to Monitoring and Evaluation were selected. The list of selected terms and identified tools will be used in the development of training programs and the implementation of standardized nutrition terminology for nutritionists working with patients with chronic kidney disease in Brazil.

Abstract
The recent publication of the revised Consensus on definition and diagnosis of sarcopenia (EWGSOP2) and the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria changed the approach to research on sarcopenia and malnutrition. Whilst sarcopenia is a nutrition-related disease, malnutrition and cachexia are nutritional disorders sharing the common feature of low fat-free mass. However, they have differential characteristics and etiologies, as well as specific therapeutic approaches. Applying the current definitions in clinical practice is still a challenge for health professionals and the potential for misdiagnosis is high. This is of special concern in the subgroup of older people with cancer, in which sarcopenia, malnutrition, and cancer cachexia are highly prevalent and can overlap or occur separately. The purpose of this review is to provide an updated overview of the latest research and consensus definitions of sarcopenia, malnutrition, and cachexia and to discuss their implications for clinical practice in older patients with cancer. The overall aim is to improve the quality of nutritional care in light of the latest findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Malnutrition is prevalent that can impair multiple clinical outcomes in oncology populations. This study aimed to develop and utilize a tool to optimize the early identification of malnutrition in patients with cancer. METHODS We performed an observational cohort study including 3998 patients with cancer at two teaching hospitals in China. Hierarchical clustering was performed to classify the patients into well-nourished or malnourished clusters based on 17 features reflecting the phenotypic and etiologic dimensions of malnutrition. Associations between the identified clusters and patient characteristics were analyzed. A nomogram for predicting the malnutrition probability was constructed and independent validation was performed to explore its clinical significance. RESULTS The cluster analysis identified a well-nourished cluster (n = 2736, 68.4%) and a malnourished cluster (n = 1262, 31.6%) in the study population, which showed significant agreement with the Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment and the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition criteria (both P < 0.001). The malnourished cluster was negatively associated with the nutritional status, physical status, quality of life, short-term outcomes and was an independent risk factor for survival (HR = 1.38, 95%CI = 1.22-1.55, P < 0.001). Sex, gastrointestinal symptoms, weight loss percentages (within and beyond 6 months), calf circumference, and body mass index were incorporated to develop the nomogram, which showed high performance to predict malnutrition (AUC = 0.972, 95%CI = 0.960-0.983). The decision curve analysis and independent external validation further demonstrated the effectiveness and clinical usefulness of the tool. CONCLUSIONS Nutritional features-based clustering analysis is a feasible approach to define malnutrition. The derived nomogram shows effectiveness for the early identification of malnutrition in patients with cancer.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study aimed to investigate the somatotype and obesity of adults in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China and to explore multivariate path analysis for the feasibility and scientificity of using somatotypes to evaluate obesity. SUBJECTS AND METHODS According to anthropometric methods, a cross-sectional study was performed on 10 indexes of 3438 adults (1690 men and 1748 women, aged > 20 years) living in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China (including Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Xibe, Uzbek, Tatar and Tajik). The Heath-Carter anthropometric method and body mass index (BMI) were used to evaluate somatotype and obesity, respectively. The feasibility and scientificity of using somatotypes to evaluate obesity were analysed by correspondence analysis. RESULTS Among the six populations, the somatotypes were mainly distributed as endomorphic mesomorph, mesomorph-endomorph and mesomorphic endomorph populations, accounting for 66.5% of males and 78.8% of females. The obesity rate (27.4% in males, 27.8% in females) of the six populations in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China was much higher than the average Chinese adult obesity rate (12.1%) and the global adult obesity rate (male: 11%, female: 15%). The distribution of BMI was significantly different (male: P=0.000, female: P=0.033) in different populations, and the incidence of overweight and obesity in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China increased gradually. This study found that there were significant differences in somatotype distribution among different obesity groups in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China (P=0.000). There was a strong correlation between overweight or obesity and endomorph-mesomorph, endomorphic mesomorph and mesomorphic endomorph. Furthermore, this study indicated that using somatotypes to evaluate obesity was reliable and scientific. CONCLUSION This study concluded that the somatotype of overweight or obese people was mainly related to endomorphic mesomorph, mesomorph-endomorph, and mesomorphic endomorph.

Abstract
Malnutrition and sarcopenia are prevalent and growing health issues in older populations. Early detection is important to implement proper interventions. However, little is known about malnutrition and sarcopenia in daycare facilities, the most dominant long-term care service. In this study, the prevalence of and factors associated with malnutrition and sarcopenia in older individuals who commute to community daycare facilities were evaluated. The cross-sectional study included 62 older individuals screened for malnutrition and sarcopenia on their first day in a daycare facility in Japan. Daily physical activity and basal diseases were also evaluated. According to Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria, 40.3% (25/62) of patients were malnourished and 59.7% (37/62) were well nourished. The Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 evaluation found that 12.9% (8/62) of patients showed no sarcopenia, whereas 87.1% (54/62) had sarcopenia. The prevalence of well-nourished sarcopenic individuals was the highest (45.2% (28/62)), followed by malnourished sarcopenia individuals (40.3% (25/62)). All malnourished individuals were sarcopenic and 14.5% (9/62) were well nourished and nonsarcopenic. Daily physical activity was significantly lower among sarcopenic individuals. Subgroups showed no significant difference in comorbidities. The prevalence of malnutrition and sarcopenia was relatively high. Activity-related sarcopenia seemed to precede malnutrition. Early detection of malnutrition and sarcopenia in daycare facilities should be encouraged for early intervention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria have been recently launched by consensus of the major nutrition societies. GLIM criteria are partly constructed on the previous definition of malnutrition developed by the European Society of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN). We aimed to assess malnutrition according to the ESPEN and GLIM criteria at baseline and to determine the corresponding risk of mortality during a 4-year follow-up in community-dwelling older adults from the SarcoPhAge (Sarcopenia and Physical Impairment with advancing Age) study. The relationship between malnutrition and incidence of 4-year adverse health consequences (institutionalization, hospitalization, falls, and fractures) was assessed. METHODS This prospective population-based cohort was part of SarcoPhAge, which included 534 older adults in Belgium, followed up from 2013 to 2019. Community-dwelling healthy volunteers ≥65 years old were recruited. Mortality and adverse health consequences were collected annually by interview or phone call. Baseline malnutrition was defined according to the GLIM and ESPEN criteria. Agreement between the two definitions was reported by Cohen's kappa coefficient. Adjusted Cox regression and Kaplan-Meier survival curves were performed for malnutrition. Logistic regression was used for the other outcomes. RESULTS From 534 subjects in SarcoPhAge, the records for 411 participants (73.2 ± 6.05 years old; 55.7% women) had all the variables needed to apply the GLIM criteria. Prevalence of baseline malnutrition was 23.4% for GLIM and 7% for ESPEN criteria (k = 0.30, low agreement). The adjusted Cox regression showed a significant increased mortality risk according to malnutrition status as defined by the GLIM [adjusted hazard ratio = 4.41 (95% confidence interval: 2.17-8.97)] and ESPEN [adjusted hazard ratio = 2.76 (95% confidence interval: 1.16-6.58)] criteria. Survival curves differed significantly between malnourished and non-malnourished groups, regardless of the definition used (log rank P < 0.001 for both). No association was found between baseline malnutrition according to these two criteria and 4-year risk of institutionalization, hospitalization, falls, or fractures (all P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Malnutrition according to the GLIM criteria was associated with a 4.4-fold higher mortality risk, double that of the ESPEN criteria, during a 4-year follow-up. No association was found between malnutrition according to these two criteria and incidence of other health adverse consequences. GLIM criteria anticipate mortality and might guide interventions, with important implications for clinical practice and research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Various measures and definitions for undernutrition are used in pediatrics. Younger children treated for cancer are at high risk, but lack well-defined risk-based screening and intervention. METHODS A retrospective study collected weight longitudinally for patients less than three years-old over two years after initiating cancer treatment. We included those diagnosed 2007-2015 at a large pediatric cancer center. Exclusion criteria included treatment starting outside our system, secondary or relapsed malignancy, or incomplete information. A decrease ≥1 in weight-for-age or weight-for-height z-score signified clinically significant weight loss. Univariate and multivariate models assessed hazards for developing first episode of clinically significant weight loss. RESULTS Of 372 patients, only 24.6% of patients lost 10% of weight, but 58.6% lost weight-for-age z-score ≥1 and 64.8% lost ≥1 weight-for-height z-score within two years of treatment initiation. Patients who lost weight were younger (median age 15 vs. 24 months, p < 0.001). Compared to patients diagnosed in the first year of life, those diagnosed 24-35 months were less likely to lose weight (HR 0.62, p < 0.001) and lost weight later (median time to weight loss 144 vs. 35 days). Higher treatment intensity increased weight loss risk (HR 2.30, p < 0.001) and decreased time to weight loss (35 vs. 154 days). No differences were found based on sex, diagnosis, enteral or parenteral nutrition, gastroenterology consults, or intensive care admissions. CONCLUSIONS Using normalized z-scores is more sensitive for identifying weight loss. Younger children are more likely to lose weight with higher intensity cancer therapy. Patient and treatment specific information should be used in risk stratifying weight loss screening and nutritional interventions.

Abstract
Based on the expert consensus on parenteral and enteral nutrition support for geriatric patients in China in 2013, domestic multidisciplinary experts were gathered to summarize the new evidence in the field of elderly nutritional support at home and abroad. The 2013 consensus was comprehensively updated and upgraded to a guideline by referring to the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation system for grading evidence. These guidelines were divided into two parts: general conditions and common diseases. After discussion by all members of the academic group and consultation with relevant experts, 60 recommendations were ultimately established as standardized nutritional support in the field of geriatrics in China.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS The Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) published a new international standard for defining malnutrition in 2018. The GLIM criteria were compared with the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) criteria in relation to physical function and mortality risk in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). METHODS A total of 921 CVD patients ≥ 20 years old (67.8 ± 13.4 years, 631 men) hospitalised for heart failure, acute coronary syndrome and other conditions were stratified according to the presence or absence of malnutrition according to the GLIM and ESPEN criteria. Physical function was assessed by measuring grip strength, 6-minute walking distance and quadriceps isometric strength before hospital discharge, and the endpoint was all-cause mortality. RESULTS During the median follow-up period of 2.3 years (interquartile range, 0.9-3.5 years), 194 deaths occurred in the study population. Malnutrition defined by the GLIM criteria was significantly associated with low physical function. Malnutrition defined by both the GLIM and ESPEN criteria was significantly related to all-cause mortality (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Malnutrition defined according to the GLIM criteria was a predictor of both low physical function and mortality in patients with CVD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Patients with head and neck cancer are defined as high-risk patients for malnutrition, but the inconsistent practice of diagnosing malnutrition is a barrier in comparing studies and in assessing patients in clinical practice. The aim of the study was to describe the frequency of malnutrition over time in patients treated for head and neck cancer using the GLIM Criteria for the Diagnosis of Malnutrition. METHODS Data from a prospective observational study on patients with head and neck cancer were used (n = 210). Patients were assessed for malnutrition using the combination of one phenotypic and one etiologic criterion. The following phenotypic criteria for malnutrition were used: body weight loss (either >5% within the past six months or >10% beyond six months), body mass index (<20 kg/m2 if <70 years or <22 kg/m2 if ≥70 years), and fat free mass index measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis (<17 FFM/m2 for males and <15 FFM/m2 for females). The following etiologic criteria for malnutrition were used: reduced food intake (partial or no food intake with the need for artificial nutrition) and C-reactive protein (>5 mg/L). RESULTS For all eight possible combinations of GLIM, the frequency of malnutrition reached its highest point at seven weeks after the start of treatment. A total of 32% of the patients fulfilled the criteria for malnutrition using weight loss >5% within the past six months (phenotypic) in combination with C-reactive protein >5 mg/L (etiologic). CONCLUSIONS GLIM Criteria for the Diagnosis of Malnutrition can be used to assess malnutrition in patients with head and neck cancer during treatment. Using the same criteria to define malnutrition in nutritional research will make it possible to produce multiple lines of evidence on malnutrition in head and neck cancer and its adverse effects on treatment, prognosis, and survival.

Nutritional status and functionality in geriatric rehabilitation patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis. Eur Geriatr Med 2020; 11:195-207. Abstract
PURPOSE Since there is only limited evidence available for geriatric rehabilitation patients, this systematic review and meta-analysis aims to characterize the nutritional status in this population and its relationship with functionality. METHODS Eight databases were searched for full-text articles reporting baseline nutritional intake and status of adults ≥ 60 years in rehabilitation settings. Pooled estimates were calculated for prevalence of malnutrition and risk of malnutrition based on the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) and for mean body mass index (BMI). Associations between nutritional status (MNA, MNA short form and BMI) and functional status (Barthel Index and Functional Independence Measure) and prevalence of sarcopenia were reviewed. RESULTS 62 out of 1717 references were eligible for inclusion. Pooled prevalence [95% confidence interval (CI)] of malnutrition and risk of malnutrition were 13 (5-20) % and 47 (40-54) %. Pooled estimate (95% CI) for BMI was 23.8 (23.2-24.5) kg/m2. Existing data suggest a risk for low protein and energy intake and vitamin D deficiency. Functional status differed widely. Seven out of ten studies reported significant associations between reduced nutritional status and reduced functionality, whilst two out of seven studies reported significant associations between higher BMI and functionality. Prevalence of sarcopenia was high with 40-76% in this population. CONCLUSIONS Although geriatric rehabilitation populations and settings were heterogeneous, a relevant percentage of geriatric rehabilitation patients were affected by a reduced nutritional status. Nutritional status was associated with decreased functionality. This emphasizes the need for screening for malnutrition and targeted nutritional intervention.

Abstract
Purpose In hospitalized patients, malnutrition is associated with adverse outcomes. However, the consequences of malnutrition in trauma patients are still poorly understood. This study aims to review the current knowledge about the pathophysiology, prevalence, and effects of malnutrition in severely injured patients. Methods A systematic literature review in PubMed and Embase was conducted according to PRISMA-guidelines. Results Nine review articles discussed the hypermetabolic state in severely injured patients in relation to malnutrition. In these patients, malnutrition negatively influenced the metabolic response, and vice versa, thereby rendering them susceptible to adverse outcomes and further deterioration of nutritional status. Thirteen cohort studies reported on prevalences of malnutrition in severely injured patients; ten reported clinical outcomes. In severely injured patients, the prevalence of malnutrition ranged from 7 to 76%, depending upon setting, population, and nutritional assessment tool used. In the geriatric trauma population, 7–62.5% were malnourished at admission and 35.6–60% were at risk for malnutrition. Malnutrition was an independent risk factor for complications, mortality, prolonged hospital length of stay, and declined quality of life. Conclusions Despite widespread belief about the importance of nutrition in severely injured patients, the quantity and quality of available evidence is surprisingly sparse, frequently of low-quality, and outdated. Based on the malnutrition-associated adverse outcomes, the nutritional status of trauma patients should be routinely and carefully monitored. Trials are required to better define the optimal nutritional treatment of trauma patients, but a standardized data dictionary and reasonable outcome measures are required for meaningful interpretation and application of results. Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Malnutrition is widespread among older people and related to poor outcome. Reported prevalences vary widely, also because of different diagnostic criteria used. This study aimed to describe prevalences in several populations of older persons in different settings using harmonized definitions. METHODS Available studies within the Joint Programming Initiative (JPI) Knowledge Hub 'Malnutrition in the Elderly' (MaNuEL) were used to calculate and compare prevalences of malnutrition indicators: low BMI (<20 kg/m2; age-specific BMI <20 if age 65-<70 and <22 kg/m2 if age ≥70 years), previous weight loss (WL), moderate and severe decrease in food intake, and combined BMI <20 kg/m2 and/or WL in participants aged ≥65 years. RESULTS Fifteen samples with in total 5956 participants (59.3% women) were included: 7 consisting of community-dwelling persons, 2 studies in geriatric day hospitals, 3 studies in hospitalized patients and 3 in nursing homes. Mean age of participants ranged between 67 and 87 years. Up to 4.2% of community-dwelling persons had a BMI <20 kg/m2, 1.6 and 9% of geriatric day hospital patients, 4.5-9.4% of hospital patients and 3.8-18.2% of nursing home residents. Using age-specific cut-offs doubled these prevalences. WL was reported in 2.3-10.5% of community-dwelling persons, 6% and 12.6% of geriatric day hospital patients, 5-14% of hospitalized patients and 4.5-7.7% of nursing home residents. Severe decrease in food intake was recorded in up to 9.6% of community-dwelling persons, 1.5% and 12% of geriatric day hospital patients, 3.4-34.2% of hospitalized patients and 1.5-8.2% of nursing home residents. The criteria age-specific BMI and WL showed opposing prevalences across all settings. Compared to women, low BMI and moderate decrease in food intake showed low prevalences in men but similar prevalences were observed for weight loss and severe decrease in food intake. In half of the study samples, participants in a younger age group had a higher prevalence of WL compared to those of an older age group. Prevalence of BMI <20 kg/m2 and WL at the same time did not exceed 2.6% in all samples. The highest prevalences were observed based on combined definitions when only one of the three criteria had to be present. CONCLUSIONS Prevalences for different criteria vary between and within the settings which might be explained by varying functional status. The criteria used strongly affect prevalence and it may be preferable to look at each criterion separately as each may indicate a nutritional problem.
