Effective epileptic seizure detection by using level-crossing EEG sampling sub-bands statistical features selection and machine learning for mobile healthcare

A hybrid EEG classification model using layered cascade deep learning architecture

The problem of multi-class classification is always a challenge in the field of EEG (electroencephalogram)-based seizure detection. The traditional studies focus on computing or learning a set of features from EEG to distinguish between different patterns. However, the extraction of characteristic information becomes increasingly difficult as the number of EEG types increases. To address this issue, a creative EEG classification technique is proposed by employing a principal component analysis network (PCANet) coupled with phase space reconstruction (PSR) and power spectrum density (PSD). We have introduced the PSR and PSD to prepare the inputs, where dynamic and frequency information are exposed from deep within PCANet. It is remarkable that a layered cascade strategy is designed to make a powerful deep learner according to the rule of one network vs one task (OVO). The proposed method has achieved greater effects than the individual models and shown superior performance in comparison with state-of-the-art algorithms, which present 98.0% of sensitivity, 99.90% of specificity, and 99.07% of accuracy. Our ensemble PCANet model works in an assembly line-like manner, obviating the need for hand-craft features. Results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can greatly enhances the accuracy and robustness of seizure detection from EEG signals.

Automated diagnosis of schizophrenia based on spatial-temporal residual graph convolutional network

BACKGROUND

Schizophrenia (SZ), a psychiatric disorder for which there is no precise diagnosis, has had a serious impact on the quality of human life and social activities for many years. Therefore, an advanced approach for accurate treatment is required.

NEW METHOD

In this study, we provide a classification approach for SZ patients based on a spatial-temporal residual graph convolutional neural network (STRGCN). The model primarily collects spatial frequency features and temporal frequency features by spatial graph convolution and single-channel temporal convolution, respectively, and blends them both for the classification learning, in contrast to traditional approaches that only evaluate temporal frequency information in EEG and disregard spatial frequency features across brain regions.

RESULTS

We conducted extensive experiments on the publicly available dataset Zenodo and our own collected dataset. The classification accuracy of the two datasets on our proposed method reached 96.32% and 85.44%, respectively. In the experiment, the dataset using delta has the best classification performance in the sub-bands.

COMPARISON WITH EXISTING METHODS

Other methods mainly rely on deep learning models dominated by convolutional neural networks and long and short time memory networks, lacking exploration of the functional connections between channels. In contrast, the present method can treat the EEG signal as a graph and integrate and analyze the temporal frequency and spatial frequency features in the EEG signal.

CONCLUSION

We provide an approach to not only performs better than other classic machine learning and deep learning algorithms on the dataset we used in diagnosing schizophrenia, but also understand the effects of schizophrenia on brain network features.

An improved GBSO-TAENN-based EEG signal classification model for epileptic seizure detection

Detection and classification of epileptic seizures from the EEG signals have gained significant attention in recent decades. Among other signals, EEG signals are extensively used by medical experts for diagnosing purposes. So, most of the existing research works developed automated mechanisms for designing an EEG-based epileptic seizure detection system. Machine learning techniques are highly used for reduced time consumption, high accuracy, and optimal performance. Still, it limits by the issues of high complexity in algorithm design, increased error value, and reduced detection efficacy. Thus, the proposed work intends to develop an automated epileptic seizure detection system with an improved performance rate. Here, the Finite Linear Haar wavelet-based Filtering (FLHF) technique is used to filter the input signals and the relevant set of features are extracted from the normalized output with the help of Fractal Dimension (FD) analysis. Then, the Grasshopper Bio-Inspired Swarm Optimization (GBSO) technique is employed to select the optimal features by computing the best fitness value and the Temporal Activation Expansive Neural Network (TAENN) mechanism is used for classifying the EEG signals to determine whether normal or seizure affected. Numerous intelligence algorithms, such as preprocessing, optimization, and classification, are used in the literature to identify epileptic seizures based on EEG signals. The primary issues facing the majority of optimization approaches are reduced convergence rates and higher computational complexity. Furthermore, the problems with machine learning approaches include a significant method complexity, intricate mathematical calculations, and a decreased training speed. Therefore, the goal of the proposed work is to put into practice efficient algorithms for the recognition and categorization of epileptic seizures based on EEG signals. The combined effect of the proposed FLHF, FD, GBSO, and TAENN models might dramatically improve disease detection accuracy while decreasing complexity of system along with time consumption as compared to the prior techniques. By using the proposed methodology, the overall average epileptic seizure detection performance is increased to 99.6% with f-measure of 99% and G-mean of 98.9% values.

Automatic seizure detection by convolutional neural networks with computational complexity analysis

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

Nowadays, an automated computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) is an approach that plays an important role in the detection of health issues. The main advantages should be in early diagnosis, including high accuracy and low computational complexity without loss of the model performance. One of these systems type is concerned with Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals and seizure detection. We designed a CAD system approach for seizure detection that optimizes the complexity of the required solution while also being reusable on different problems.

METHODS

The methodology is built-in deep data analysis for normalization. In comparison to previous research, the system does not necessitate a feature extraction process that optimizes and reduces system complexity. The data classification is provided by a designed 8-layer deep convolutional neural network.

RESULTS

Depending on used data, we have achieved the accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity of 98%, 98%, and 98.5% on the short-term Bonn EEG dataset, and 96.99%, 96.89%, and 97.06% on the long-term CHB-MIT EEG dataset.

CONCLUSIONS

Through the approach to detection, the system offers an optimized solution for seizure diagnosis health problems. The proposed solution should be implemented in all clinical or home environments for decision support.

Epileptic Seizure Detection Using a Hybrid 1D CNN-Machine Learning Approach from EEG Data

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a widely used technique for the detection of epileptic seizures. It can be recorded in a noninvasive manner to present the electrical activity of the brain. The visual inspection of nonlinear and highly complex EEG signals is both costly and time-consuming. Therefore, an effective automatic detection system is needed to assist in the long-term evaluation and treatment of patients. Traditional approaches based on machine learning require feature extraction, while deep learning approaches are time-consuming and require more layers for effective feature learning and processing of complex EEG waveforms. Deep learning-based approaches also have weak generalization ability. This paper proposes a solution based on the combination of convolution neural networks (CNN) and machine learning classifiers. It preprocesses the EEG signal using the Butterworth filter and performs feature extraction using CNN. From the extracted set of features, the approach selects only the relevant features using mutual information-based estimators to reduce the curse of dimensionality and improve classification accuracy. The selected features are then passed as input to different machine learning classifiers. The suggested solution is evaluated on the University of Bonn dataset and CHB-MIT datasets. Our model effectively predicts 2, 3, 4, and 5 classes with accuracy of 100%, 99%, 94.6%, and 94%, respectively, for the Bonn dataset and 98% for CHB-MIT datasets.

Event-Driven Acquisition and Machine-Learning-Based Efficient Prediction of the Li-Ion Battery Capacity

In almost all contemporary power systems, the battery is an elementary component, and it is routinely used in a variety of critical applications such as drones, avionics, and cell phones. Due to their superior characteristics compared to the concurrent technologies, Li-ion batteries are widely utilized. Since batteries are costly, their usage is closely monitored by battery management systems (BMSs). It ensures that batteries survive and serve longer. Modern BMSs’ are complex and sophisticated and can deal with hundreds of cells in a battery pack. It results in an increased processing resources requirement and can cause an overhead power consumption. The aim of this work is to improve current BMSs by redesigning their associative processing chain. It focuses on improving data collection, processing and prediction processes for Li-ion battery cell capacities. To prevent the processing of a large amount of unnecessary data, the classical sensing approach that is fix-rate is avoided and replaced by event-driven sensing (EDS) mechanism to digitize battery cell parameters such as voltages, currents, and temperatures in a way that allows for real-time data compressing. A new approach is proposed for event-driven feature extraction. The robust machine-learning algorithms are employed for processing the extracted features and to predict the capacity of considered battery cell. Results show a considerable compression gain with a correlation coefficient of 0.999 and the relative absolute error (RAE) and root relative squared error (RRSE) of 1.88% and 2.08%, respectively.

A channel independent generalized seizure detection method for pediatric epileptic seizures

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

Epilepsy the disorder of the central nervous system has its worldwide presence in roughly 50 million people as estimated by the World Health Organization. Electroencephalogram (EEG) is one of the most common and non-invasive ways of analyzing and studying the subtle changes in neuronal activity of the brain during an epileptic seizure attack. These changes can be analyzed for developing an automated system that would assert the chances of an impending seizure. As changeable nature of seizure affects the patients from having a normal life, hence progress in developing new methods will improve the quality of life and also provide assistance in the medical sector. Objective of the proposed method is to avoid EEG channel selection and use all input EEG channel features to design a generalized epileptic seizure detection framework.

METHOD

In this work, a long short-term memory network has been proposed that is not complex and has the capability of effectively detecting epileptic seizures from both non-invasive and invasive electroencephalogram recordings. The proposed framework is simple and effective and designed in such capacity that raw electroencephalogram signals can be used to detect seizures. Also, a generalized approach has been followed that is channel independent such that EEG signals belonging to any hemisphere of the brain can be detected effectively by the proposed architecture.

RESULTS

The automated seizure detection system achieved high seizure detection sensitivity of 99.9%, and a low false-positive rate of 0.003 per hour for the Children's Hospital Boston-Massachusetts Institute of Technology dataset. While for the Sleep-Wake-Epilepsy-Center of the University Department of Neurology at the Inselspital Bern dataset, the sensitivity is 99.4% and false-positive rate of 0.006 per hour. Convergence analysis of the proposed model provides a significant amount of reliability and correctness in the efficient detection of epileptic seizures.

CONCLUSION

Assessment of the proposed framework on non-invasive as well as invasive EEG signals showed that the framework worked well for different type of EEG recordings as different metrics gave satisfactory results. As the framework is simple and did not require any additional parameter optimization techniques, it reduced the processing overheads without affecting the accuracy. Hence, it can be used as an efficient method for monitoring epileptic seizures.

Deep Convolutional Neural Network Regularization for Alcoholism Detection Using EEG Signals

Alcoholism is attributed to regular or excessive drinking of alcohol and leads to the disturbance of the neuronal system in the human brain. This results in certain malfunctioning of neurons that can be detected by an electroencephalogram (EEG) using several electrodes on a human skull at appropriate positions. It is of great interest to be able to classify an EEG activity as that of a normal person or an alcoholic person using data from the minimum possible electrodes (or channels). Due to the complex nature of EEG signals, accurate classification of alcoholism using only a small dataset is a challenging task. Artificial neural networks, specifically convolutional neural networks (CNNs), provide efficient and accurate results in various pattern-based classification problems. In this work, we apply CNN on raw EEG data and demonstrate how we achieved 98% average accuracy by optimizing a baseline CNN model and outperforming its results in a range of performance evaluation metrics on the University of California at Irvine Machine Learning (UCI-ML) EEG dataset. This article explains the stepwise improvement of the baseline model using the dropout, batch normalization, and kernel regularization techniques and provides a comparison of the two models that can be beneficial for aspiring practitioners who aim to develop similar classification models in CNN. A performance comparison is also provided with other approaches using the same dataset.

Signal-piloted processing and machine learning based efficient power quality disturbances recognition

Significant losses can occur for various smart grid stake holders due to the Power Quality Disturbances (PQDs). Therefore, it is necessary to correctly recognize and timely mitigate the PQDs. In this context, an emerging trend is the development of machine learning assisted PQDs management. Based on the conventional processing theory, the existing PQDs identification is time-invariant. It can result in a huge amount of unnecessary information being collected, processed, and transmitted. Consequently, needless processing activities, power consumption and latency can occur. In this paper, a novel combination of signal-piloted acquisition, adaptive-rate segmentation and time-domain features extraction with machine learning tools is suggested. The signal-piloted acquisition and processing brings real-time compression. Therefore, a remarkable reduction can be secured in the data storage, processing and transmission requirement towards the post classifier. Additionally, a reduced computational cost and latency of classifier is promised. The classification is accomplished by using robust machine learning algorithms. A comparison is made among the k-Nearest Neighbor, Naïve Bayes, Artificial Neural Network and Support Vector Machine. Multiple metrics are used to test the success of classification. It permits to avoid any biasness of findings. The applicability of the suggested approach is studied for automated recognition of the power signal’s major voltage and transient disturbances. Results show that the system attains a 6.75-fold reduction in the collected information and the processing load and secures the 98.05% accuracy of classification.
