A review on recent advances in electrodeionization for various environmental applications

The growing contamination of ecosystems necessitates the development of long-term pollution-removal technologies. Electrodeionization, in notably, has newly proven as an efficient method for removing ionic chemicals from polluted waterways. The fact that continuous electrodeionization is a greener technique is most probably the biggest cause for its success. It replaces the toxic chemicals typically required to replenish resins with electric power, therefore eliminating the wastewater involved with resin renewal. In water treatment, electrodeionization solves some of the drawbacks of ion exchange resin beds, particularly ion dumping as beds expire. This comprehensive review explores the theory, principles, and mechanisms of ion movement and separation in an electrodeionization unit. Also, it investigated the construction and usage, notably in removing heavy metal and its current developments in electrodeionization unit. Recent advances in Electrodeionization like polarity reversal, Resin wafer Electrodeionization, membrane free Electrodeionization, and electrostatic shielding with novel materials and hybrid process along with Electrodeionization were addressed. Further advancements are expected in electrodeionization systems that exhibit better efficacy while running at lower costs due to decreased energy usage, rendering them appealing for industrial scale up across a wide range of applications across the world.

Removal of ibuprofen from aqueous media by adsorption: A comprehensive review

Ibuprofen (IBP) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug released into the environment through hospital and medical effluents, pharmaceutical wastewater and veterinary use. The aim of this paper is to review the empirical findings on the adsorption of IBP from aqueous media. A preliminary ecotoxicological assessment confirmed the environmental risk of IBP in the aqueous environment. Open literature works considered in this review were for the past decade (2010-2020). Carbon-based adsorbents are the best class of adsorbent for the uptake of IBP and the highest reported maximum adsorption capacity (q_max) for IBP is 496.1 mg/g by SWCNTs. The range of adsorption capacities for IBP uptake in this review is between 0.0496 and 496.1 mg/g. The mechanism of uptake is majorly by hydrophobic interactions, π - π stacking, hydrogen bonds, electrostatic interactions and dipole-dipole interaction. IBP uptake was best fit to a wide variety of isotherm models but was well suited to the pseudo-second order kinetics model. The thermodynamics of IBP uptake depends majorly on the nature of the adsorbent and desorption from the solid phase is based on an appropriate choice of the eluent. Knowledge gaps were observed in used adsorbent disposal and process improvement. In the future, interest would increase in scale-up, industrial applications and practical utilisation of the research findings which would help in sustainable water resource management.

Domestic wastewater treatment by forward osmosis-membrane distillation (FO-MD) integrated system

In this study, real domestic wastewater treatment by forward osmosis-membrane distillation (FO-MD) integrated system was investigated in laboratory scale. The integrated membrane system presented a good separation performance and the removal efficiency of most contaminants in the domestic wastewater was higher than 90%. High molecular weight contaminants were completely removed, while a few low molecular weight contaminants permeated through the membrane. The FO membrane fouling layer mainly consisted of organic substances like polysaccharides and proteins, and was very loose and could be effectively removed by rinsing the membrane surface with tap water. By comparison, the MD membrane fouling was mainly induced by inorganic salts and was not as severe as that of the FO membrane. During 120 h continuous operation, the FO-MD integrated system exhibited satisfying performance stability and maintained a high water yield and high product water quality. The results indicated the potential of the FO-MD integrated system for municipal wastewater treatment in coastal cities, water purification and desalination.

Managing produced water from coal seam gas projects: implications for an emerging industry in Australia

This paper reviews the environmental problems, impacts and risks associated with the generation and disposal of produced water by the emerging coal seam gas (CSG) industry and how it may be relevant to Australia and similar physical settings. With only limited independent research on the potential environmental impacts of produced water, is it necessary for industry and government policy makers and regulators to draw upon the experiences of related endeavours such as mining and groundwater extraction accepting that the conclusions may not always be directly transferrable. CSG is widely touted in Australia as having the potential to provide significant economic and energy security benefits, yet the environmental and health policies and the planning and regulatory setting are yet to mature and are continuing to evolve amidst ongoing social and environmental concerns and political indecision. In this review, produced water has been defined as water that is brought to the land surface during the process of recovering methane gas from coal seams and includes water sourced from CSG wells as well as flowback water associated with drilling, hydraulic fracturing and gas extraction. A brief overview of produced water generation, its characteristics and environmental issues is provided. A review of past lessons and identification of potential risks, including disposal options, is included to assist in planning and management of this industry.
