Impact of Ionic Liquids on the Physicochemical Behavior of Vesicles

The effects of two ionic liquids (ILs), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([bmim]BF4) and 1-butyl-1-methyl pyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate ([bmp]BF4), on a mixture of phospholipids (PLs) 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine (DPPC), 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (DPPE), and 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoglycerol (DPPG) (6:3:1, M/M/M, 70% PL) in combination with 30 mol % cholesterol (CHOL) were investigated in the form of a solvent-spread monolayer and bilayer (vesicle). Surface pressure (π)-area (A) isotherm studies, using a Langmuir surface balance, revealed the formation of an expanded monolayer, while the cationic moiety of the IL molecules could electrostatically and hydrophobically bind to the PLs on the palisade layer. Turbidity, dynamic light scattering (size, ζ-potential, and polydispersity index), electron microscopy, small-angle X-ray/neutron scattering, fluorescence spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetric studies were carried out to evaluate the effects of IL on the structural organization of bilayer in the vesicles. The ILs could induce vesicle aggregation by acting as a "glue" at lower concentrations (<1.5 mM), while at higher concentrations, the ILs disrupt the bilayer structure. Besides, ILs could result in the thinning of the bilayer, evidenced from the scattering studies. Steady-state fluorescence anisotropy and lifetime studies suggest asymmetric insertion of ILs into the lipid bilayer. MTT assay using human blood lymphocytes indicates the safe application of vesicles in the presence of ILs, with a minimal toxicity of up to 2.5 mM IL in the dispersion. These results are proposed to have applications in the field of drug delivery systems with benign environmental impact.

Effect of Water and Salt on the Colloidal Stability of Latex Particles in Ionic Liquid Solutions

The colloidal stability of sulfate (SL) and polyimidazolium-modified sulfate (SL-IP-2) latex particles was studied in an ionic liquid (IL) of ethylammonium nitrate (EAN) and its water mixtures. Aggregation rates were found to vary systematically as a function of the IL-to-water ratio. Repulsive electrostatic interactions between particles dominated at low IL concentrations, while they were significantly screened at intermediate IL concentrations, leading to destabilization of the dispersions. When the IL concentration was further increased, the aggregation of latex particles slowed down due to the increased viscosity and finally, a striking stabilization was observed in the IL-rich regime close to the pure IL solvent. The latter stabilization is due to the formation of IL layers at the interface between particles and IL, which induce repulsive oscillatory forces. The presence of the added salt in the system affected differently the structure of the interfaces around SL and SL-IP-2 particles. The sign of the charge and the composition of the particle surfaces were found to be the most important parameters affecting the colloidal stability. The nature of the counterions also plays an important role in the interfacial properties due to their influence on the structure of the IL surface layers. No evidence was observed for the presence of long-range electrostatic interactions between the particles in pure ILs. The results indicate that the presence of even low concentrations of water and salt in the system (as undesirable impurities) can strongly alter the interfacial structure and thus, the aggregation mechanism in particle IL dispersions.

Self-assembly of an imidazolium surfactant in aprotic ionic liquids. 2. More than solvents

As tailorable solvents, the physiochemical properties of ionic liquids can be tuned by the structure of ions. Herein, we investigate the structural effects of ILs on the self-assembly of surfactants. It has been confirmed that the cationic surfactant 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (C₁₆mimBr) can self-assemble into micellar and lamellar lyotropic liquid crystal phases in the aprotic ionic liquid (AIL) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([Emim]BF₄). In this work, we explore the aggregation behaviours in AILs with different alkyl chains on the imidazolium group, i.e., 1-propyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([Pmim]BF₄), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([Bmim]BF₄), 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([Hmim]BF₄) and 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([Omim]BF₄). With the increase of the cation chain length, AILs have better solubility of the solvophobic part of the surfactants and hence a weaker driving force for self-assembly. Therefore, the critical micellization concentration of C₁₆mimBr in AILs increases as confirmed by the surface tension and small angle X-ray scattering characterizations. More interesting things happen to the phase behaviours. Besides the micellar and lamellar lyotropic liquid crystal phases, a hexagonal lyotropic liquid crystal phase is formed in [Pmim]BF₄ while hexagonal and bicontinuous cubic lyotropic liquid crystal phases are formed in [Bmim]BF₄, [Hmim]BF₄ and [Omim]BF₄. It is surprising to observe richer phase behaviours in solvents of lower cohesive energy. The detailed structural information of various aggregates has been obtained by small-angle X-ray scattering. It is demonstrated that AILs work as not only solvents but also co-surfactants.

Designing Imidazolium Poly(amide-amide) and Poly(amide-imide) Ionenes and Their Interactions with Mono- and Tris(imidazolium) Ionic Liquids

Here we introduce the synthesis and thermal properties of a series of sophisticated imidazolium ionenes with alternating amide-amide or amide-imide backbone functionality, and investigate the structural effects of mono(imidazolium) and unprecedented tris(imidazolium) ionic liquids (ILs) in these ionenes. The new set of poly(amide-amide) (PAA) and poly(amide-imide) (PAI) ionenes represent the intersection of conventional high-performance polymers with the ionene archetype-presenting polymers with alternating functional and ionic elements precisely sequenced along the backbone. The effects of polymer composition on the thermal properties and morphology were analyzed. Five distinct polymer backbones were synthesized and combined with a stoichiometric equivalent of the IL 1-benzyl-3-methylimidazolium bistriflimide ([Bnmim][Tf₂N]), which were studied to probe the self-assembly, structuring, and contributions of intermolecular forces when IL is added. Furthermore, three polyamide (PA) or polyimide (PI) ionenes with simpler xylyl linkages were interfaced with [Bnmim][Tf₂N] as well as a novel amide-linked tris(imidazolium) IL, to demonstrate the structural changes imparted by the inclusion of functional, ionic additives dispersed within the ionene matrix. This work highlights the possibilities for utilizing concepts from small molecules which exhibit supramolecular self-assembly to guide creative design and manipulate the structuring of ionenes.

Surface Adsorption and Bulk Properties of Surfactants in Quaternary-Ammonium-Salt-Type Amphiphilic Monomeric and Gemini Ionic Liquids

The physicochemical properties of ionic liquids can be readily controlled. Currently, it is necessary to investigate the properties of different surfactants to elucidate the mixtures used in quaternary-ammonium-salt-type ionic liquids. Herein, the surface adsorption and bulk properties of homogeneous polyoxyethylene (EO)-type nonionic surfactant, quaternary-ammonium-salt-type cationic surfactant, and sulfobetaine-type zwitterionic surfactant are elucidated in quaternary-ammonium-salt-type amphiphilic monomeric ionic liquids and gemini ionic liquids with bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide or bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide as counterions. The monomeric amphiphilic ionic liquids that adsorbed at the interface were replaced with C_xEO_y (where x and y represent alkyl and EO chain lengths, respectively) as the concentration of C_xEO_y increased. On the other hand, in the gemini amphiphilic ionic liquids, the surface tensions of C_xEO_y were lower than those of the monomeric ionic liquids. Consequently, both gemini amphiphilic ionic liquids and C_xEO_y adsorbed efficiently at the interface and oriented themselves because of a synergistic effect. Furthermore, for ionic liquids with short alkyl chains, an orderly bulk nanostructure was not observed at low concentrations in C_xEO_y, while a layer structure formed at higher concentrations; in contrast, ionic liquids with long alkyl chains formed a layer structure. The alkyl chains, which were interlocked in the bilayer structure, resulted in a densely packed layer structure.

Modulations in Self-Organization Properties of Surfactant in Aqueous Ionic Liquid Media

Ionic liquids (ILs) give a wide scope of favorable applications due to their much-upgraded properties. The strong electrostatic interactions between the cationic moiety of IL and the anionic surfactant play a very important role in the assembly of the large aggregates. We have investigated the aggregation behavior of anionic surfactants and IL in aqueous solution. Different temperatures and concentrations of IL have been taken to study the effect on critical micelles concentrations of surfactant. The critical micelle concentration values obtained by conductivity measurements are further confirmed by the fluorescence studies. The method is based on the fit of the experimental obtained raw data of fluorescence spectroscopy to a simple nonlinear category of a Boltzmann type sigmoidal function. Thermodynamical parameters of micellization Δ H m 0 $\Delta H_{m}^{0}$ , Δ G m 0 $\Delta G_{m}^{0}$ and Δ S m 0 $\Delta S_{m}^{0}$ have been considered to study the effect of aqueous IL 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide concentration and temperature on aggregation behavior of surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate. FT-IR spectra have been studies to verify the structural changes arise in the aqueous IL and surfactant system.

Self-assembled structure and dynamics of imidazolium-based protic salts in water solution

Protic ionic liquids containing cations with long alkyl chains can form self-assembled micelles, vesicles, microemulsions, and lyotropic liquid crystal structures in water, acid water or tetrahydrofuran, etc. As a result of this unique property, they are regarded as a novel category of amphiphiles, and are gaining importance in the field of colloid and interface chemistry. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of protic salts, e.g., alkyl-ammonium nitrates in water, was found to increase with decreasing chain length. It is generally believed that a long alkyl chain length is essential for the formation of self-assembled structures. So far, no self-assembled structure has been reported for protic ionic liquids with an alkyl chain length of n < 4. This paper reports on the structure and dynamics of two imidazolium based protic organic salts with no alkyl chain or a methyl group (n = 1) attached to the cation in water solution, determined through a detailed analysis of NMR spectra and pulsed-field gradient NMR data. We demonstrate that these imidazolium cations with no or a short alkyl chain (n = 1) can form a self-assembled clustering structure in water solution, which has a strong influence on the diffusion behavior of imidazolium molecular ions. It is speculated that this self-assembled structure is likely to be present in other similar solutions of ionic liquids with short alkyl chains.

Nonaqueous Microemulsion in the Bmim Tf2N/Brij 30/ n-Nonane System: Structural Investigation and Application as Gold Nanoparticle Microreactor

Microemulsions based on ionic liquids (ILs) are being increasingly studied in many different areas of physical chemistry because of the attractive properties of ILs. In particular, waterless microemulsions where the IL represents the polar phase can be of interest for those applications that demand the nanosegregation of polar substances, but in which the absence of water is a strict requirement. In this work, we prepared a reverse, nonaqueous microemulsion based on the low-viscosity room-temperature IL, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide , the surfactant Brij 30, and n-nonane. The systems were characterized by dynamic light scattering and small-angle X-ray scattering; the IL/oil microemulsion was further employed as a templating system for the synthesis of gold nanoparticles from hydrogen tetrachloroaurate(III), HAuCl₄, by UV-photoreduction technique.

Physical stimuli-responsive liposomes and polymersomes as drug delivery vehicles based on phase transitions in the membrane

This paper reviews liposomes with crystalline phase and polymersomes exhibiting crystalline and thermotropic liquid crystalline phases in the membrane. Intriguing morphologies of vesicles are described, including spherical, ellipsoidal and faceted vesicles, produced by a large variety of amphiphilic molecules and polymers with nematic phase, smectic phase or crystalline phase. It is highlighted how the phase transitions and the phase grain boundaries could be used ingeniously to destabilize the vesicular structure and to achieve cargo-release under the action of external stimulation. These liposomes and polymersomes are responsive to physical stimuli, such as temperature variation, shear stress, light illumination, and magnetic and electric fields. These stimuli-responsive properties make them promising candidates as new smart drug delivery systems.

"Rigid" Luminescent Soft Materials: Europium-Containing Lyotropic Liquid Crystals Based on Polyoxyethylene Phytosterols and Ionic Liquids

Soft materials of europium β-diketonate complexes constructed in lyotropic liquid crystals (LLCs) mediated by ionic liquids (ILs) are impressive for their excellent luminescence performance and stability. For the aim to further improve their mechanical processability and luminescent tunablility, the polyoxyethylene phytosterols (BPS-n) were introduced here as structure directing agents to prepare relatively "rigid" lamellar luminescent LLCs in 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium hexafluorophosphate by doping europium β-diketonate complexes with different imidazolium counterions. As a result of the solvophobic sterol ring structure of BPS-n, the more effective isolation and confinement effects of europium complexes could be achieved. The longest fluorescence lifetime and the highest quantum efficiency reported so far for europium containing lyotropic organized soft materials were thus obtained. Changing the molecular structures of BPS-n with different oxyethylene chains or doped complexes with imidazolium counterions of different alkyl chain lengths, the spacings of lamellar LLC matrixes and position of dispersed complexes became tunable. The measured luminescent and rheological properties for such composite LLCs showed a dependence on the rigidity and isolation capability afforded by sterol molecules. It was also found that the increase of counterion alkyl chain length would weaken the LLC matrix's confinement and isolation effects and therefore exhibit the deteriorated luminescence performance. The enhanced luminescence efficiency and stability of doped BPS-n LLCs reflected the excellent segregation of europium complexes from each other and therefore the reduced self-quenching process. The obtained results here present the designability of LLC matrixes and their great potential to promote achieving the luminescence tunability of soft materials.

Effects of a Spacer on the Phase Behavior of Gemini Surfactants in Ethanolammonium Nitrate

The aggregation behavior of quaternary ammonium gemini surfactants (12-s-12) in a protic ionic liquid, ethanolammonium nitrate (EOAN), was investigated by small-angle X-ray scattering, freeze-fracture transmission electron microscopy, polarized optical microscopy, and rheological measurements. The rarely reported nonaqueous two phases in the ionic liquid were observed at lower 12-s-12 concentrations. The upper phase was composed of micelles, whereas only the surfactant unimers or multimers were detected in the low phase. At higher 12-s-12 concentrations, different aggregates were formed. The lamellar phase was observed in the 12-2-12/EOAN system, whereas the normal hexagonal phases in 12-s-12/EOAN (s = 3, 4, 5, 6, 8) systems and the micellar phase in the 12-10-12/EOAN system were observed. Such a dramatic phase transition induced by the spacer chain length was due to the unique solvent characteristics of EOAN compared to those of water and its counterpart ethylammonium nitrate.

Effect of protic ionic liquid nanostructure on phospholipid vesicle formation

The formation of bilayer-based lyotropic liquid crystals and vesicle dispersions by phospholipids in a range of protic ionic liquids has been investigated by polarizing optical microscopy using isothermal penetration scans, differential scanning calorimetry, and small angle X-ray and neutron scattering. The stability and structure of both lamellar phases and vesicle dispersions is found to depend primarily on the underlying amphiphilic nanostructure of the ionic liquid itself. This finding has significant implications for the use of ionic liquids in soft and biological materials and for biopreservation, and demonstrates how vesicle structure and properties can be controlled through selection of cation and anion. For a given ionic liquid, systematic trends in bilayer thickness, chain-melting temperature and enthalpy increase with phospholipid acyl chain length, paralleling behaviour in aqueous systems.

About the nanostructure of the ternary system water - [BMIm]PF6 - TX-100

HYPOTHESIS

Many efforts have been made to formulate water-IL microemulsions. One of the most intensely studied systems is H₂O - 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([BMIm]PF₆) - 4-octylphenol polyethoxylate (TX-100) and it is not questioned that this system forms microemulsions. The nanostructures observed for traditional microemulsions are postulated with the surfactant being adsorbed at the interface such that the hydrophilic EO sides intrude into the water domains, while the hydrophobic hydrocarbon chains are immersed into [BMIm]PF₆. However, the high polarity of [BMIm]PF₆ and the observation that [BMIm]PF₆ mixes well with oligoethylene oxides but hardly with non-polar solvents like toluene or alkanes are not in line with this picture.

EXPERIMENTS

We re-studied the ternary system H₂O - [BMIm]PF₆ - TX-100 by measuring phase diagrams, determining tie-lines, and carrying out ROESY NMR and PFG NMR measurements.

FINDINGS

We found that the hydrophobic part of the surfactant interacts neither with water nor with [BMIm]PF₆, while both solvents interact with the hydrophilic part of the surfactant. We suggest that the surfactant is not adsorbed at the interface between water and the IL, but forms normal spherical or elongated micelles or even continuous aggregates with the hydrocarbon chains forming the interior of the aggregates.

Tailored ionic liquid-based surfactants for the formation of microemulsions with water and a hydrophobic ionic liquid

Microemulsions (μe) with water and a hydrophobic ionic liquid (IL) usually require 45-60 wt% surfactant to solubilize equal amounts of water and IL. To increase the efficiency we designed a new class of surfactants by combining a hydrophilic but IL-ophobic carbohydrate-based part with a hydrophobic but IL-ophilic IL-based part. These surfactants allow formulating microemulsions with 20 wt% surfactant only which opens up a new arena for efficient water-IL μes.

Microstructure of copolymeric micelles modulated by ionic liquids: investigating the role of the anion and cation

The addition of ionic liquids significantly alters the micellization behaviour of, and has a profound effect on, the micelles of T1304.

Effects of Water on Solvation Layers of Imidazolium-Type Room Temperature Ionic Liquids on Silica and Mica

Effects of the addition of water on solvation layers of imidazolium-type room temperature ionic liquids (RT-ILs) have been studied through force curve measurements of atomic force microscopy (AFM). Two kinds of RT-ILs were employed in this study; one is a hydrophilic RT-IL (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, BmimBF4), and the other is a hydrophobic one (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, EmimTFSI). These RT-ILs form solvation layers on hydrophilic solid substances (i.e., silica and mica) in the absence of added water. The addition of water into BmimBF4 resulted in the disruption of the solvation layers and then the formation of an interfacial water phase on silica. In contrast, the formation of the interfacial water phase was not evidenced on mica because of the absence of hydrogen-bonding sites on the mica surface. Interestingly, the addition of water into EmimTFSI induced the formation of the interfacial water phase on the two solid surfaces. In the EmimTFSI system, importantly, significantly greater adhesion forces were observed on silica than on mica. This reflects the different formation mechanisms of the interfacial water phase on the two solid surfaces. We conclude that the hydrogen bonding is a key factor in determining whether water molecules can be adsorbed on the solid surfaces, but it is also necessary to take into account the hydrophilic/hydrophobic nature of the RT-ILs.

Amphiphile self-assemblies in supercritical CO2 and ionic liquids

Supercritical (sc) CO2 and ionic liquids (ILs) are very attractive green solvents with tunable properties. Using scCO2 and ILs as alternatives of conventional solvents (water and oil) for forming amphiphile self-assemblies has many advantages. For example, the properties and structures of the amphiphile self-assemblies in these solvents can be easily modulated by tuning the properties of solvents; scCO2 has excellent solvation power and mass-transfer characteristics; ILs can dissolve both organic and inorganic substances and their properties are designable to satisfy the requirements of various applications. Therefore, the amphiphile self-assemblies in scCO2 and ILs have attracted considerable attention in recent years. This review describes the advances of using scCO2 or/and ILs as amphiphile self-assembly media in the last decade. The amphiphile self-assemblies in scCO2 and ILs are first reviewed, followed by the discussion on combination of scCO2 and ILs in creating microemulsions or emulsions. Some future directions on the amphiphile self-assemblies in scCO2 and ILs are highlighted.

Supramolecular gelators based on benzenetricarboxamides for ionic liquids

Supramolecular gelators comprising 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acids and amino acid methyl esters (glycine, L-alanine, L-valine, L-leucine, L-methionine, and L-phenylalanine) for ionic liquids were developed. Ten types of ionic liquids were gelated using the above-mentioned gelators at relatively low concentrations. Field emission-scanning electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy analyses revealed that these gelators self-assembled into an entangled fibrous structure in ionic liquids, leading to the gelation of the ionic liquids. Comparison studies, involving compounds analogous to the gelators, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy measurements suggested that hydrogen bonding played a key role in the self-assembly of the gelator molecules. The ionogels displayed reversible thermal transition characteristics and viscoelastic properties typical of a gel. The gelation of the ionic liquids studied under a wide range of gelator concentrations did not affect the intrinsic conductivity of the ionic liquids.

Phase transition of a quaternary ammonium Gemini surfactant induced by minor structural changes of protic ionic liquids

The aggregation behaviors of a Gemini surfactant [C12H25(CH3)2N(+)(CH2)2N(+)(CH3)2C12H25]Br2(-) (12-2-12) in two protic ionic liquids (PILs), propylammonium nitrate (PAN) and butylammonium nitrate (BAN), were investigated by means of several experimental techniques including small and wide-angle X-ray scattering, the polarized optical microscopy and the rheological measurement. Compared to those in ethylammonium nitrate (EAN), the minor structural changes with only one or two methylene units (-CH2-) increase in cationic chain length of PIL, result in a dramatic phase transition of formed aggregates. The critical micellization concentration was increased in PAN, while no micelle formation was detected in BAN. A normal hexagonal phase was observed in the 12-2-12/PAN system, while the normal hexagonal, bicontinuous cubic, and lamellar phases were mapped in the 12-2-12/BAN system. Such aggregation behavior changes can be ascribed to the weaker solvophobic interactions of 12-2-12 in PAN and BAN. The unique molecular structure of 12-2-12 is also an important factor to highlight such a dramatic phase transition due to the PIL structure change.

First fluorinated zwitterionic micelle with unusually slow exchange in an ionic liquid

The micellization of a fluorinated zwitterionic surfactant in ethylammonium nitrate (EAN) was investigated. The freeze-fracture transmission electron microscope (FF-TEM) observations confirm the formation of spherical micelles with the average diameter 25.45 ± 3.74 nm. The micellization is an entropy-driven process at low temperature but an enthalpy-driven process at high temperature. Two sets of (19)F NMR signals above the critical micelle concentration (cmc) indicate that the unusually slow exchange between micelles and monomers exists in ionic liquid; meanwhile, surfactant molecules are more inclined to stay in micelle states instead of monomer states at higher concentration. Through the analysis of the half line width (Δν1/2), we can obtain the kinetic information of fluorinated zwitterionic micellization in an ionic liquid.

Shape and size controlled synthesis of MOF nanocrystals with the assistance of ionic liquid mircoemulsions

In this work, the La-metal-organic frameworks (La-MOFs) were synthesized using lanthanum(III) nitrate and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (BTC) in H2O-in-1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (bmimPF6), bmimPF6-in-water, and the bicontinuous microemulsions stabilized by surfactant TX-100. The MOFs prepared were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and FT-IR methods, and the microstructures of the microemulsions in the H2O/bmimPF6/TX-100 system were studied by small-angle X-ray scattering (SXAS) technique. It was shown that the dispersed droplets in the water-in-bmimPF6, bicontinuous and bmimPF6-in-water microemulsions were spherical, lamellar, and cylindrical, respectively. The shapes of the La-MOFs synthesized were similar to that of the droplets in the corresponding microemulsions. This indicated that the morphology of MOFs could be controlled by the microstructures of the microemulsions. On the basis of the systematic experimental results, the mechanism for controlling the morphology of the MOFs was proposed.
