Biomimetic Slippery Surface with Exclusive Liquid-Repellent and Self-Cleaning Properties for Antifouling

The nature always offers amazing inspiration, where it is highly desirable to endow coatings on marine equipment with powerful functions. An excellent example is slippery zone of Nepenthes pitcher, which possesses novel liquid-repellent and self-cleaning performance. Therefore, this study presents an efficient fabrication method to prepare a novel coating. The coatings were fabricated by designing biomimetic textures extracted from the lunate bodies of slippery zone on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and then grafting Dictyophora indusiata polysaccharide (DIP) modifier. The as-prepared slippery coatings exhibited outstanding antifouling properties against kinds of daily life pollutants such as Chlorella and coffee. This synergistic strategy was proposed combined with environmentally friendly modifier grafting and heterogeneous microstructure on the surface to broaden new probabilities for manufacturing slippery coatings with incredible protective functionality.

Brushing Up on Cartilage Lubrication: Polyelectrolyte-Enhanced Tribological Rehydration

This study presents new insights into the potential role of polyelectrolyte interfaces in regulating low friction and interstitial fluid pressurization of cartilage. Polymer brushes composed of hydrophilic 3-sulfopropyl methacrylate potassium salt (SPMK) tethered to a PEEK substrate (SPMK-g-PEEK) are a compelling biomimetic solution for interfacing with cartilage, inspired by the natural lubricating biopolyelectrolyte constituents of synovial fluid. These SPMK-g-PEEK surfaces exhibit a hydrated compliant layer approximately 5 μm thick, demonstrating the ability to maintain low friction coefficients (μ ∼ 0.01) across a wide speed range (0.1-200 mm/s) under physiological loads (0.75-1.2 MPa). A novel polyelectrolyte-enhanced tribological rehydration mechanism is elucidated, capable of recovering up to ∼12% cartilage strain and subsequently facilitating cartilage interstitial fluid recovery, under loads ranging from 0.25 to 2.21 MPa. This is attributed to the combined effects of fluid confinement within the contact gap and the enhanced elastohydrodynamic behavior of polymer brushes. Contrary to conventional theories that emphasize interstitial fluid pressurization in regulating cartilage lubrication, this work demonstrates that SPMK-g-PEEK's frictional behavior with cartilage is independent of these factors and provides unabating aqueous lubrication. Polyelectrolyte-enhanced tribological rehydration can occur within a static contact area and operates independently of known mechanisms of cartilage interstitial fluid recovery established for converging or migrating cartilage contacts. These findings challenge existing paradigms, proposing a novel polyelectrolyte-cartilage tribological mechanism not exclusively reliant on interstitial fluid pressurization or cartilage contact geometry. The implications of this research extend to a broader understanding of synovial joint lubrication, offering insights into the development of joint replacement materials that more accurately replicate the natural functionality of cartilage.

Study of Hydration Repulsion of Zwitterionic Polymer Brushes Resistant to Protein Adhesion through Molecular Simulations

The fabrication of antifouling zwitterionic polymer brushes represents a leading approach to mitigate nonspecific adhesion on the surfaces of medical devices. This investigation seeks to elucidate the correlation between the material composition and structural attributes of these polymer brushes in preventing protein adhesion. To achieve this goal, we modeled three different zwitterionic brushes, namely, carboxybetaine methacrylate (CBMA), sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA), and (2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl)-phosphorylcholine (MPC). The simulations revealed that elevating the grafting density enhances the structural stability, hydration strength, and resistance to protein adhesion exhibited by the polymer brushes. PCBMA manifests a more robust hydration layer, while PMPC demonstrates the slightest interaction with proteins. In a comprehensive evaluation, PSBMA polymer brushes emerged as the best choice with superior stability, enhanced protein repulsion, and minimally induced protein deformation, resulting in effective resistance to nonspecific adhesion. The high-density SBMA polymer brushes significantly reduce the level of protein adhesion in AFM testing. In addition, we have pioneered the quantitative characterization of hydration repulsion in polymer brushes by analyzing the hydration repulsion characteristics at different materials and graft densities. In summary, our study provides a nuanced understanding of the material and structural determinants influencing the capacity of zwitterionic polymer brushes to thwart protein adhesion. Additionally, it presents a quantitative elucidation of hydration repulsion, contributing to the advancement and application of antifouling polymer brushes.

High-density zwitterionic polymer brushes exhibit robust lubrication properties and high antithrombotic efficacy in blood-contacting medical devices

High-performance catheters are essential for interventional surgeries, requiring reliable anti-adhesive and lubricated surfaces. This article develops a strategy for constructing high-density sulfobetaine zwitterionic polymer brushes on the surface of catheters, utilizing dopamine and sodium alginate as the primary intermediate layers, where dopamine provides mussel-protein-like adhesion to anchor the polymer brushes to the catheter surface. Hydroxyl-rich sodium alginate increases the number of grafting sites and improves the grafting mass by more than 4 times. The developed high-density zwitterionic polymer brushes achieve long-lasting and effective lubricity (μ<0.0078) and are implanted in rabbits for four hours without bio-adhesion and thrombosis in the absence of anticoagulants such as heparin. Experiments and molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate that graft mass plays a decisive role in the lubricity and anti-adhesion of polymer brushes, and it is proposed to predict the anti-adhesion of polymer brushes by their lubricity to avoid costly and time-consuming bioassays during the development of amphoteric polymer brushes. A quantitative influence of hydration in the anti-adhesion properties of amphiphilic polymer brushes is also revealed. Thus, this study provides a new approach to safe, long-lasting lubrication and anticoagulant surface modification for medical devices in contact with blood. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: High friction and bioadhesion on medical device surfaces can pose a significant risk to patients. In response, we have developed a safer, simpler, and more application-specific surface modification strategy that addresses both the lubrication and anti-bioadhesion needs of medical device surfaces. We used dopamine and sodium alginate as intermediate layers to drastically increase the grafting density of the zwitterionic brushes and enabled the modified surfaces to have an extremely low coefficient of friction (μ = 0.0078) and to remain non-bioadhesive for 4 hours in vivo. Furthermore, we used molecular dynamics simulations to gain insight into the mechanisms behind the superior anti-adhesion properties of the high-density polymer brushes. Our work contributes to the development and application of surface-modified coatings.

Correlation between viscoelastic response and frictional properties of hydrated zwitterionic polymer brush film in narrowing shear gap

HYPOTHESIS

A hydrated 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) polymer brush exhibits exceptional lubricity. This lubrication mechanism has traditionally been attributed to either the inherent fluidity of the brush or the water film that forms owing to its hydrophilic nature. Given previous findings that the frictional properties of the MPC polymer brush film show load dependence, we hypothesize that the lubrication mechanism can be elucidated by examining the shear gap (varies owing to the load) dependence of the brush's viscoelastic response.

EXPERIMENTS

MPC polymer brush films with different thicknesses were prepared. Their viscoelastic responses were evaluated across different shear gap widths, and the frictional properties were subsequently compared across states with distinct viscoelastic behaviors.

FINDINGS

The observed shear viscoelasticity demonstrated a clear gap dependence that correlated with frictional attributes. Our data suggests that the lubrication mechanism shifts based on the shear gap. Specifically, two states exhibited low coefficients of friction: one where the osmotic pressure supports the load while allowing flexible deformation of the brush film, and the other where the brush film undergoes compression and transitions to a fully elastic state.

Design, preparation, and characterization of lubricating polymer brushes for biomedical applications

The lubrication modification of biomedical devices significantly enhances the functionality of implanted interventional medical devices, thereby providing additional benefits for patients. Polymer brush coating provides a convenient and efficient method for surface modification while ensuring the preservation of the substrate's original properties. The current research has focused on a "trial and error" method to finding polymer brushes with superior lubricity qualities, which is time-consuming and expensive, as obtaining effective and long-lasting lubricity properties for polymer brushes is difficult. This review summarizes recent research advances in the biomedical field in the design, material selection, preparation, and characterization of lubricating and antifouling polymer brushes, which follow the polymer brush development process. This review begins by examining various approaches to polymer brush design, including molecular dynamics simulation and machine learning, from the fundamentals of polymer brush lubrication. Recent advancements in polymer brush design are then synthesized and potential avenues for future research are explored. Emphasis is placed on the burgeoning field of zwitterionic polymer brushes, and highlighting the broad prospects of supramolecular polymer brushes based on host-guest interactions in the field of self-repairing polymer brush applications. The review culminates by providing a summary of methodologies for characterizing the structural and functional attributes of polymer brushes. It is believed that a development approach for polymer brushes based on "design-material selection-preparation-characterization" can be created, easing the challenge of creating polymer brushes with high-performance lubricating qualities and enabling the on-demand creation of coatings. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Biomedical devices have severe lubrication modification needs, and surface lubrication modification by polymer brush coating is currently the most promising means. However, the design and preparation of polymer brushes often involves "iterative testing" to find polymer brushes with excellent lubrication properties, which is both time-consuming and expensive. This review proposes a polymer brush development process based on the "design-material selection-preparation-characterization" strategy and summarizes recent research advances and trends in the design, material selection, preparation, and characterization of polymer brushes. This review will help polymer brush researchers by alleviating the challenges of creating polymer brushes with high-performance lubricity and promises to enable the on-demand construction of polymer brush lubrication coatings.

Physically cross-linked organo-hydrogels for friction interfaces in joint replacements: design, evaluation and potential clinical applications

This paper investigates physically crosslinked organo-hydrogels for total hip replacement surgery. Current materials in artificial joints have limitations in mechanical performance and biocompatibility. To overcome these issues, a new approach based on hydrogen bonds between polyvinyl alcohol, poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), and glycerin is proposed to develop bioactive organo-hydrogels with improved mechanical properties and biocompatibility. This study analyzes local pathological characteristics, systemic toxicity, and mechanical properties of the gels. The results show that the gels possess excellent biocompatibility and mechanical strength, suggesting their potential as an alternative material for total hip replacement surgery. These findings contribute to improving patient outcomes in joint replacement procedures.

Highly lubricious SPMK-g-PEEK implant surfaces to facilitate rehydration of articular cartilage

To enable long lasting osteochondral defect repairs which preserve the native function of synovial joint counter-face, it is essential to develop surfaces which are optimised to support healthy cartilage function by providing a hydrated, low friction and compliant sliding interface. PEEK surfaces were modified using a biocompatible 3-sulfopropyl methacrylate potassium salt (SPMK) through UV photo-polymerisation, resulting in a ∼350 nm thick hydrophilic coating rich in hydrophilic anionic sulfonic acid groups. Characterisation was done through Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy, Focused Ion Beam Scanning Electron Microscopy, and Water Contact Angle measurements. Using a Bruker UMT TriboLab, bovine cartilage sliding tests were conducted with real-time strain and shear force measurements, comparing untreated PEEK, SPMK functionalised PEEK (SPMK-g-PEEK), and Cobalt Chrome Molybdenum alloy. Tribological tests over 2.5 h at physiological loads (0.75 MPa) revealed that SPMK-g-PEEK maintains low friction (μ< 0.024) and minimises equilibrium strain, significantly reducing forces on the cartilage interface. Post-test analysis showed no notable damage to the cartilage interfacing against the SPMK functionalised surfaces. The application of a constitutive biphasic cartilage model to the experimental strain data reveals that SPMK surfaces increase the interfacial permeability of cartilage in sliding, facilitating fluid and strain recovery. Unlike previous demonstrations of sliding-induced tribological rehydration requiring specific hydrodynamic conditions, the SPMK-g-PEEK introduces a novel mode of tribological rehydration operating at low speeds and in a stationary contact area. SPMK-g-PEEK surfaces provide an enhanced cartilage counter-surface, which provides a highly hydrated and lubricious boundary layer along with supporting biphasic lubrication. Soft polymer surface functionalisation of orthopaedic implant surfaces are a promising approach for minimally invasive synovial joint repair with an enhanced bioinspired polyelectrolyte interface for sliding against cartilage. These hydrophilic surface coatings offer an enabling technology for the next generation of focal cartilage repair and hemiarthroplasty implant surfaces.

Engineered Polymeric Nanovector for Intracellular Peptide Delivery in Antitumor Therapy

Objective

This study aimed to deliver a polypeptide from the Bax-BH3 domain (BHP) through the synthesis of self-assembled amphiphile nanovectors (NVs) and to assess their potential for cancer therapeutic applications and biological safety in vitro and in vivo. These findings provide valuable options for cancer intervention and a novel approach for the rational design of therapeutics.

Methods

We studied the antitumor activity of BHP by preparing RGDfK-PHPMA-b-Poly (MMA-alt-(Rhob-MA)) (RPPMMRA) and encapsulating it in BHP-NV. We also performed a series of characterizations and property analyses of RPPMMRA, including its size, stability, and drug-carrying capacity. The biocompatibility of RPPMMRA was evaluated in terms of cytotoxicity and hemolytic effects. The pro-apoptotic capacity of BHP was evaluated in vitro using mitochondrial membrane potential, flow cytometry, and apoptosis visualization techniques. The potential therapeutic effects of BHP on tumors were explored using reverse molecular docking. We also investigated the in vivo proapoptotic effect of BHP-NV in a nude mouse tumor model.

Results

NVs were successfully prepared with hydrated particle sizes ranging from 189.6 nm to 256.6 nm, spherical overall, and were able to remain stable in different media for 72 h with drug loading up to 15.2%. The NVs were be successfully internalized within 6 h with good biocompatibility. Neither BHP nor NV showed significant toxicity when administered alone, however, BHP-NV demonstrated significant side effects in vitro and in vivo. The apoptosis rate increased significantly from 14.13% to 66.34%. Experiments in vivo showed that BHP-NV exhibited significant apoptotic and tumor-suppressive effects.

Conclusion

A targeted fluorescent NV with high drug delivery efficiency and sustained release protected the active center of BHP, constituting BHP-NV for targeted delivery. RPPMMRA demonstrated excellent biocompatibility, stability, and drug loading ability, whereas and BHP-NV demonstrated potent antitumor effects in vivo and in vitro.

Interaction of Rhus typhina Tannin with Lipid Nanoparticles: Implication for the Formulation of a Tannin-Liposome Hybrid Biomaterial with Antibacterial Activity

Tannins are natural plant origin polyphenols that are promising compounds for pharmacological applications due to their strong and different biological activities, including antibacterial activity. Our previous studies demonstrated that sumac tannin, i.e., 3,6-bis-O-di-O-galloyl-1,2,4-tri-O-galloyl-β-D-glucose (isolated from Rhus typhina L.), possesses strong antibacterial activity against different bacterial strains. One of the crucial factors of the pharmacological activity of tannins is their ability to interact with biomembranes, which may result in the penetration of these compounds into cells or the realization of their activity on the surface. The aim of the current work was to study the interactions of sumac tannin with liposomes as a simple model of the cellular membrane, which is widely used in studies focused on the explanation of the physicochemical nature of molecule-membrane interactions. Additionally, these lipid nanovesicles are very often investigated as nanocarriers for different types of biologically active molecules, such as antibiotics. In the frame of our study, using differential scanning calorimetry, zeta-potential, and fluorescence analysis, we have shown that 3,6-bis-O-di-O-galloyl-1,2,4-tri-O-galloyl-β-D-glucose interacts strongly with liposomes and can be encapsulated inside them. A formulated sumac-liposome hybrid nanocomplex demonstrated much stronger antibacterial activity in comparison with pure tannin. Overall, by using the high affinity of sumac tannin to liposomes, new, functional nanobiomaterials with strong antibacterial activity against Gram-positive strains, such as S. aureus, S. epidermitis, and B. cereus, can be formulated.

Cartilage-bioinspired, tough and lubricated hydrogel based on nanocomposite enhancement effect

The maintenance of high load-bearing tissues and joint lubrication is essential for suppressing osteoarthritis. The lubrication of natural joints is mainly attributed to the hydration lubrication mechanism of articular cartilage. Phospholipids on the cartilage surface attract water molecules to form a tough hydrated layer to reduce friction. In this work, inspired by the phosphatidylcholine lipids, we synthesized lubricated nanospheres by grafting hydrophilic polymer brushes and further synthesized a nanocomposite hydrogel. The addition of the lubricated nanospheres enhanced both the mechanical and lubricated properties of the hydrogel. The nanocomposite-lubricated hydrogel exhibited a friction coefficient 81.7% lower than the blank hydrogel because of grafting the polymer brushes. Also, the nanocomposite enhancement helped the hydrogel achieve high mechanical properties with a compressive strength of 6.63 MPa (50%). The nanocomposite hydrogel developed here could be a promising candidate material in bionic articular cartilage substitute materials.

Recent Advances in Mechanical Reinforcement of Zwitterionic Hydrogels

As a nonspecific protein adsorption material, a strong hydration layer provides zwitterionic hydrogels with excellent application potential while weakening the interaction between zwitterionic units, leading to poor mechanical properties. The unique anti-polyelectrolyte effect in ionic solution further restricts the application value due to the worsening mechanical strength. To overcome the limitations of zwitterionic hydrogels that can only be used in scenarios that do not require mechanical properties, several methods for strengthening mechanical properties based on enhancing intermolecular interaction forces and polymer network structure design have been extensively studied. Here, we review the works on preparing tough zwitterionic hydrogel. Based on the spatial and molecular structure design, tough zwitterionic hydrogels have been considered as an important candidate for advanced biomedical and soft ionotronic devices.

Effects of an Electrical Double Layer and Tribo-Induced Electric Field on the Penetration and Lubrication of Water-Based Lubricants

Understanding the effects of electrical double layers (EDL) and tribo-induced electric fields on the electroosmotic behaviors of lubricants is important for developing high-performance water-based lubricants. In this study, EDL conductivities of aqueous lubricants containing a surfactant of 3-[(3-cholamidopropyl)-dimethylammonio]-1-propanesulfonate (CHAPS) or cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) were analyzed. The interfacial zeta potentials of the synthesized lubricants and Al2O3 ceramic-alloy steel contacts were measured, and frictional potentials of ceramic and steel surfaces were determined using a modified ball-on-disc configuration. The distribution characteristics of the tribo-induced electric field of the ceramic-steel sliding contact were numerically analyzed. The electroosmotic behaviors of the lubricants were investigated using a four-ball configuration. It was found that an EDL and tribo-induced electric field was a crucial enabler in stimulating the electroosmosis of lubricants. Through altering EDL structures, CHAPS enhanced the electroosmosis and penetration of the water-based lubricant, thus resulting in improved lubrication.

Controlled-Release Nanosystems with a Dual Function of Targeted Therapy and Radiotherapy in Colorectal Cancer

Nanoparticles are excellent platforms for several biomedical applications, including cancer treatment. They can incorporate different molecules to produce combinations of chemotherapeutic agents, radionuclides, and targeting molecules to improve the therapeutic strategies against cancer. These specific nanosystems are designed to have minimal side effects on healthy cells and better treatment efficacy against cancer cells when compared to chemotherapeutics, external irradiation, or targeted radiotherapy alone. In colorectal cancer, some metal and polymeric nanoparticle platforms have been used to potentialize external radiation therapy and targeted drug delivery. Polymeric nanoparticles, liposomes, albumin-based nanoparticles, etc., conjugated with PEG and/or HLA, can be excellent platforms to increase blood circulation time and decrease side effects, in addition to the combination of chemo/radiotherapy, which increases therapeutic efficacy. Additionally, radiolabeled nanoparticles have been conjugated to target specific tissues and are mainly used as agents for diagnosis, drug/gene delivery systems, or plasmonic photothermal therapy enhancers. This review aims to analyze how nanosystems are shaping combinatorial therapy and evaluate their status in the treatment of colorectal cancer.

Molecular weight tuning optimizes poly(2-methoxyethyl acrylate) dispersion to enhance the aging resistance and anti-fouling behavior of denture base resin

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-based denture base resins easily develop oral bacterial and fungal biofilms, which may constitute a significant health risk. Conventional bacterial-resistant additives and coatings often cause undesirable changes in the resin. Reduced bacterial resistance over time in the harsh oral environment is a major challenge in resin development. Poly(2-methoxyethyl acrylate) (PMEA) has anti-fouling properties; however, due to the oily/rubbery state of this polymer, and its surface aggregation tendency in a resin mixture, its direct use as a resin additive is limited. This study aimed to optimize the use of PMEA in dental resins. Acrylic resins containing a series of PMEA polymers with various molecular weights (MWs) at different concentrations were prepared, and the mechanical properties, surface gloss, direct transmittance, and cytotoxicity were evaluated, along with the distribution of PMEA in the resin. Resins with low-MW PMEA (2000 g mol^-1) (PMEA-1) at low concentrations satisfied the clinical requirements for denture resins, and the PMEA was homogeneously distributed. The anti-fouling performance of the resin was evaluated for protein adsorption, bacterial and fungal attachment, and saliva-derived biofilm formation. The PMEA-1 resin most effectively inhibited biofilm formation (∼50% reduction in biofilm mass and thickness compared to those of the control). Post-aged resins maintained their mechanical properties and anti-fouling activity, and polished surfaces had the same anti-biofilm behavior. Based on wettability and tribological results, we propose that the PMEA additive creates a non-stick surface to inhibit biofilm formation. This study demonstrated that PMEA additives can provide a stable and biocompatible anti-fouling surface, without sacrificing the mechanical properties and aesthetics of denture resins.

Antifouling PVC Catheters by Gamma Radiation-Induced Zwitterionic Polymer Grafting

In medical environments, polymeric surfaces tend to become contaminated, hindering the treatment and recovery from diseases. Biofouling-resistant materials, such as zwitterionic polymers, may mitigate this problem. In this work, the modification of PVC catheters with a binary graft of 4-vinylpyridine (4VP) and sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) by the oxidative pre-irradiation method is proposed to develop pH-responsive catheters with an antifouling capacity. The ionizing radiation allowed us to overcome limitations in the synthesis associated with the monomer characteristics. In addition, the grafted materials showed a considerable increase in their hydrophilic character and antifouling capacity, significantly decreasing the protein adsorption compared to the unmodified catheters. These materials have potential for the development of a combined antimicrobial and antifouling capabilities system to enhance prophylactic activity or even to help treat infections.

Functionalized Hemodialysis Polysulfone Membranes with Improved Hemocompatibility

The field of membrane materials is one of the most dynamic due to the continuously changing requirements regarding the selectivity and the upgradation of the materials developed with the constantly changing needs. Two membrane processes are essential at present, not for development, but for everyday life-desalination and hemodialysis. Hemodialysis has preserved life and increased life expectancy over the past 60-70 years for tens of millions of people with chronic kidney dysfunction. In addition to the challenges related to the efficiency and separative properties of the membranes, the biggest challenge remained and still remains the assurance of hemocompatibility-not affecting the blood during its recirculation outside the body for 4 h once every two days. This review presents the latest research carried out in the field of functionalization of polysulfone membranes (the most used polymer in the preparation of membranes for hemodialysis) with the purpose of increasing the hemocompatibility and efficiency of the separation process itself with a decreasing impact on the body.

Recent Advances in Zwitterionic Hydrogels: Preparation, Property, and Biomedical Application

Nonspecific protein adsorption impedes the sustainability of materials in biologically related applications. Such adsorption activates the immune system by quick identification of allogeneic materials and triggers a rejection, resulting in the rapid failure of implant materials and drugs. Antifouling materials have been rapidly developed in the past 20 years, from natural polysaccharides (such as dextran) to synthetic polymers (such as polyethylene glycol, PEG). However, recent studies have shown that traditional antifouling materials, including PEG, still fail to overcome the challenges of a complex human environment. Zwitterionic materials are a class of materials that contain both cationic and anionic groups, with their overall charge being neutral. Compared with PEG materials, zwitterionic materials have much stronger hydration, which is considered the most important factor for antifouling. Among zwitterionic materials, zwitterionic hydrogels have excellent structural stability and controllable regulation capabilities for various biomedical scenarios. Here, we first describe the mechanism and structure of zwitterionic materials. Following the preparation and property of zwitterionic hydrogels, recent advances in zwitterionic hydrogels in various biomedical applications are reviewed.

A Comprehensive Review of Water-Based Nanolubricants

Applying nanomaterials and nanotechnology in lubrication has become increasingly popular and important to further reduce the friction and wear in engineering applications. To achieve green manufacturing and its sustainable development, water-based nanolubricants are emerging as promising alternatives to the traditional oil-containing lubricants that inevitably pose environmental issues when burnt and discharged. This review presents an overview of recent advances in water-based nanolubricants, starting from the preparation of the lubricants using different types of nanoadditives, followed by the techniques to evaluate and enhance their dispersion stability, and the commonly used tribo-testing methods. The lubrication mechanisms and models are discussed with special attention given to the roles of the nanoadditives. Finally, the applications of water-based nanolubricants in metal rolling are summarised, and the outlook for future research directions is proposed.

Unexpected Frictional Behavior of Laser-Textured Hydrophobic Surfaces

Hydrophobic surfaces can allow a liquid to slip over the surface and can thus reduce friction in lubricated contact working in a full film regime. Theory supports that the amount of slip can be increased if super-hydrophobic surfaces that are composed of a textured low surface energy material are used. In this work, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) polymer samples were textured with a femto second laser to create super-hydrophobic surfaces by machining a hexagonal network of small circular holes with 10 and 20 μm lattice sides. The frictional behavior of these surfaces was compared to the smooth PTFE samples. Surprisingly, the textured surfaces revealed higher friction coefficients than the smooth surfaces. This higher friction can be explained by a change of wetting regime due to high pressure in fluid and a possible generation of vortices in the cavities.

Application of Zwitterions in Forward Osmosis: A Short Review

Forward osmosis (FO) is an important desalination method to produce potable water. It was also used to treat different wastewater streams, including industrial as well as municipal wastewater. Though FO is environmentally benign, energy intensive, and highly efficient; it still suffers from four types of fouling namely: organic fouling, inorganic scaling, biofouling and colloidal fouling or a combination of these types of fouling. Membrane fouling may require simple shear force and physical cleaning for sufficient recovery of membrane performance. Severe fouling may need chemical cleaning, especially when a slimy biofilm or severe microbial colony is formed. Modification of FO membrane through introducing zwitterionic moieties on the membrane surface has been proven to enhance antifouling property. In addition, it could also significantly improve the separation efficiency and longevity of the membrane. Zwitterion moieties can also incorporate in draw solution as electrolytes in FO process. It could be in a form of a monomer or a polymer. Hence, this review comprehensively discussed several methods of inclusion of zwitterionic moieties in FO membrane. These methods include atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP); second interfacial polymerization (SIP); coating and in situ formation. Furthermore, an attempt was made to understand the mechanism of improvement in FO performance by zwitterionic moieties. Finally, the future prospective of the application of zwitterions in FO has been discussed.

HPMA Copolymer-Based Nanomedicines in Controlled Drug Delivery

Recently, numerous polymer materials have been employed as drug carrier systems in medicinal research, and their detailed properties have been thoroughly evaluated. Water-soluble polymer carriers play a significant role between these studied polymer systems as they are advantageously applied as carriers of low-molecular-weight drugs and compounds, e.g., cytostatic agents, anti-inflammatory drugs, antimicrobial molecules, or multidrug resistance inhibitors. Covalent attachment of carried molecules using a biodegradable spacer is strongly preferred, as such design ensures the controlled release of the drug in the place of a desired pharmacological effect in a reasonable time-dependent manner. Importantly, the synthetic polymer biomaterials based on N-(2-hydroxypropyl) methacrylamide (HPMA) copolymers are recognized drug carriers with unique properties that nominate them among the most serious nanomedicines candidates for human clinical trials. This review focuses on advances in the development of HPMA copolymer-based nanomedicines within the passive and active targeting into the place of desired pharmacological effect, tumors, inflammation or bacterial infection sites. Specifically, this review highlights the safety issues of HPMA polymer-based drug carriers concerning the structure of nanomedicines. The main impact consists of the improvement of targeting ability, especially concerning the enhanced and permeability retention (EPR) effect.

Superhydrophilic Coating of Pine Wood by Plasma Functionalization of Self-Assembled Polystyrene Spheres

Self-assembling films typically used for colloidal lithography have been applied to pine wood substrates to change the surface wettability. Therefore, monodisperse polystyrene (PS) spheres have been deposited onto a rough pine wood substrate via dip coating. The resulting PS sphere film resembled a polycrystalline face centered cubic (FCC)-like structure with typical domain sizes of 5–15 single spheres. This self-assembled coating was further functionalized via an O2 plasma. This plasma treatment strongly influenced the particle sizes in the outermost layer, and hydroxyl as well as carbonyl groups were introduced to the PS spheres’ surfaces, thus generating a superhydrophilic behavior.

Mechanical Properties of Protective Coatings against Marine Fouling: A Review

The accumulation of marine organisms on ship hulls, such as microorganisms, barnacles, and seaweeds, represents a global problem for maritime industries, with both economic and environmental costs. The use of biocide-containing paints poses a serious threat to marine ecosystems, affecting both target and non-target organisms driving science and technology towards non-biocidal solutions based on physico-chemical and materials properties of coatings. The review reports recent development of hydrophobic protective coatings in terms of mechanical properties, correlated with the wet ability features. The attention is focused mainly on coatings based on siloxane and epoxy resin due to the wide application fields of such systems in the marine industry. Polyurethane and other systems have been considered as well. These coatings for anti-fouling applications needs to be both long-term mechanically stable, perfectly adherent with the metallic/composite substrate, and capable to detach/destroy the fouling organism. Prospects should focus on developing even “greener” antifouling coatings solutions. These coatings should also be readily addressable to industrial scale-up for large-scale product distribution, possibly at a reasonable cost.

Tribological Properties of Additive Manufactured Materials for Energy Applications: A Review

Recently, additive manufacturing (AM) has gained much traction due to its processing advantages over traditional manufacturing methods. However, there are limited studies which focus on process optimization for surface quality of AM materials, which can dictate mechanical, thermal, and tribological performance. For example, in heat-transfer applications, increased surface quality is advantageous for reducing wear rates of vibrating tubes as well as increasing the heat-transfer rates of contacting systems. Although many post-processing and in situ manufacturing techniques are used in conjunction with AM techniques to improve surface quality, these processes are costly and time-consuming compared to optimized processing techniques. With improved as-built surface quality, particles tend to be better fused, which allows for greater wear resistance from contacting tube surfaces. Additionally, improved surface quality can reduce the entropy and exergy generated from flowing fluids, in turn increasing the thermodynamic efficiency of heat-transferring devices. This review aims to summarize the process-optimizing methods used in AM for metal-based heat exchangers and the importance of as-built surface quality to its performance and long-term energy conservation. The future directions and current challenges of this field will also be covered, with suggestions on how research in this topic can be improved.

Insight into the Lubrication Behavior of Phospholipids Pre-adsorbed on Silica Surfaces at Different Adsorption Temperatures

Phospholipids, as essential components in joint synovial fluid, play a dominant role in joint lubrication. In this study, atomic force microscopy was used to evaluate the normal and shear forces between two surfaces bearing three types of phospholipids with different acyl chain lengths, which were pre-adsorbed onto silica surfaces at different temperatures (25, 45, and 60 °C). When the pre-adsorption temperature was below the phospholipid phase transition temperature (T_m), a super-low friction coefficient [1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DSPC): 0.002; 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC): 0.007] between two opposing silica surfaces in water was achieved because of the super-low shear strength of the hydration shell and robustness of the vesicle when the load was less than the critical value (DSPC: 500 nN; DPPC: 85 nN). However, when the pre-adsorption temperature exceeded T_m, the silica surface was covered by a bilayer structure with many defects, which exhibited poor adsorption density and low bearing capacity, resulting in a relatively high friction coefficient. This study gains insights into the influence of structure and temperature on the lubrication mechanism of phospholipids as biolubricants, providing guidance for the application of artificial joint synovial fluid.

Superhydrophilic Coating with Antibacterial and Oil-Repellent Properties via NaIO4-Triggered Polydopamine/Sulfobetaine Methacrylate Polymerization

Superhydrophilic coatings have been widely used for the surface modification of membranes or biomedical devices owing to their excellent antifouling properties. However, simplifying the modification processes of such materials remains challenging. In this study, we developed a simple and rapid one-step co-deposition process using an oxidant trigger to fabricate superhydrophilic surfaces based on dopamine chemistry with sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA). We studied the effect of different oxidants and SBMA concentrations on surface modification in detail using UV-VIS spectrophotometry, dynamic light scattering, atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and surface plasmon resonance. We found that NaIO4 could trigger the rate of polymerization and the optimum ratio of dopamine to SBMA is 1:25 by weight. This makes the surface superhydrophilic (water contact angle < 10°) and antifouling. The superhydrophilic coating, when introduced to polyester membranes, showed great potential for oil/water separation. Our study provides a complete description of the simple and fast preparation of superhydrophilic coatings for surface modification based on mussel-inspired chemistry.

Recent Advances in Mussel-Inspired Synthetic Polymers as Marine Antifouling Coatings

Synthetic oligomers and polymers inspired by the multifunctional tethering system (byssus) of the common mussel (genus Mytilus) have emerged since the 1980s as a very active research domain within the wider bioinspired and biomimetic materials arena. The unique combination of strong underwater adhesion, robust mechanical properties and self-healing capacity has been linked to a large extent to the presence of the unusual α-amino acid derivative l-DOPA (l-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine) as a building block of the mussel byssus proteins. This paper provides a short overview of marine biofouling, discussing the different marine biofouling species and natural defenses against these, as well as biomimicry as a concept investigated in the marine antifouling context. A detailed discussion of the literature on the Mytilus mussel family follows, covering elements of their biology, biochemistry and the specific measures adopted by these mussels to utilise their l-DOPA-rich protein sequences (and specifically the ortho-bisphenol (catechol) moiety) in their benefit. A comprehensive account is then given of the key catechol chemistries (covalent and non-covalent/intermolecular) relevant to adhesion, cohesion and self-healing, as well as of some of the most characteristic mussel protein synthetic mimics reported over the past 30 years and the related polymer functionalisation strategies with l-DOPA/catechol. Lastly, we review some of the most recent advances in such mussel-inspired synthetic oligomers and polymers, claimed as specifically aimed or intended for use in marine antifouling coatings and/or tested against marine biofouling species.

The Role of Hyaluronic Acid in Cartilage Boundary Lubrication

Hydration lubrication has emerged as a new paradigm for lubrication in aqueous and biological media, accounting especially for the extremely low friction (friction coefficients down to 0.001) of articular cartilage lubrication in joints. Among the ensemble of molecules acting in the joint, phosphatidylcholine (PC) lipids have been proposed as the key molecules forming, in a complex with other molecules including hyaluronic acid (HA), a robust layer on the outer surface of the cartilage. HA, ubiquitous in synovial joints, is not in itself a good boundary lubricant, but binds the PC lipids at the cartilage surface; these, in turn, massively reduce the friction via hydration lubrication at their exposed, highly hydrated phosphocholine headgroups. An important unresolved issue in this scenario is why the free HA molecules in the synovial fluid do not suppress the lubricity by adsorbing simultaneously to the opposing lipid layers, i.e., forming an adhesive, dissipative bridge between them, as they slide past each other during joint articulation. To address this question, we directly examined the friction between two hydrogenated soy PC (HSPC) lipid layers (in the form of liposomes) immersed in HA solution or two palmitoyl-oleoyl PC (POPC) lipid layers across HA-POPC solution using a surface force balance (SFB). The results show, clearly and surprisingly, that HA addition does not affect the outstanding lubrication provided by the PC lipid layers. A possible mechanism indicated by our data that may account for this is that multiple lipid layers form on each cartilage surface, so that the slip plane may move from the midplane between the opposing surfaces, which is bridged by the HA, to an HA-free interface within a multilayer, where hydration lubrication is freely active. Another possibility suggested by our model experiments is that lipids in synovial fluid may complex with HA, thereby inhibiting the HA molecules from adhering to the lipids on the cartilage surfaces.

Superlubrication obtained with mixtures of hydrated ions and polyethylene glycol solutions in the mixed and hydrodynamic lubrication regimes

HYPOTHESIS

Superlubricity is known to dramatically reduce frictional energy consumption and to improve service life of mechanical devices and biological systems. However, reduction of wear during the running-in period of friction pairs, especially under high contact pressures, still remains an unresolved issue affecting all machines.

EXPERIMENTS

Here the lubrication, adsorption, and conformational properties of hydrated ions and polyethylene glycol (PEG) mixtures were evaluated at different mass fractions and concentrations of PEG and salts by ball-on-disc tribometer, ζ-potential, quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D), and dynamic light scatting (DLS) analyses.

FINDINGS

These mixtures exhibited superlubricity between Si₃N₄ and sapphire surfaces in a wide range of concentrations and ions valency. Interestingly, a running-in phase shorter than 1 min and low wear rate of 1.85 μm³/(N·m) were observed at contact pressures up to 555 MPa, significantly higher to earlier findings. PEG chains retain random coils filling the bulk of the interfacial film without strongly adsorbing on the interfaces but significantly increasing the viscosity of lubricating film, thereby favoring hydrodynamic lubrication. Hydrated ions are strongly adsorbed on the negatively charged ceramic surfaces, ensuring a sustained hydration effect maintaining superlubricity. The outstanding lubrication characteristics of the PEG/ions mixtures were attributed to the synergistic action of hydration and hydrodynamic lubrication, which appears as a promising avenue for developing new green lubricants and has implications for industrial and biological applications.
