The Influence of Lifelong Learning on Life Satisfaction and Successful Aging in Older Adults: A Narrative Literature Review

PURPOSE

To explore the association between lifelong learning (LL) and successful aging and discover ways that primary care nurses (PCNs) may facilitate successful aging by promoting LL.

METHOD

A narrative review of international evidence from Google Scholar, PubMed, CINAHL Plus, Ovid, and ProQuest was conducted. Twenty-one articles were reviewed. A theoretical framework supported by Troutman-Jordan's theory of successful aging and Baltes and Baltes' model of selection, optimization, and compensation were implemented to examine and illustrate findings.

RESULTS

Evidence consistently showed a positive correlation between LL and successful aging.

CONCLUSION

Promotion of successful aging is an important consideration in PCN practice. This study brings awareness to the value of LL in achieving that goal. Incorporating strategies, such as encouraging creative activities and healthy behaviors, cultivating positive perceptions about aging, and helping patients meet their perceived needs, fosters coping with growing older. Bridging the gaps in patient education through aesthetic-based education: A concept analysis study

BACKGROUND

Aesthetics is a branch of philosophy that has been entered into the philosophy of education for a long time. Reviewing the concept of aesthetics in education, we can see the components that can cover a number of challenges in the field of patient education. Focusing on the conceptual dimensions obtained from the analysis of this concept, the aim is matching the resulting conceptual categories with the gaps in the field of patient education.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Using a scoping review, we reviewed the literature dealt with different dimensions of aesthetic-based education. Walker and Avant's concept analysis approach was used to inductively analyze the content obtained from the review of literature. The data were divided into three general groups of antecedents, attributes, and consequences of the aesthetic-based education concept, and the final conceptual model was defined. Interdisciplinary comparisons between educational and medical sciences were made to match the concept of aesthetic education with the field of patient education to cover its issues. During the scope review process of the texts, after screening the articles, 17 articles selected to enter the concept analysis stage.

RESULT

Concept analysis phase showed that the main conceptual categories of antecedents of aesthetic-based education are aesthetic-based intrapersonal competencies and aesthetic capacities of educational setting. The attributes include aesthetic-based educational content and teaching methods including unity in diversity, combination with art and being based on empathy. The consequences include subliminal learning and constraint-free learning. These conceptual dimensions can cover four important issues in patient education including patient satisfaction, pedagogical competences of health educators, patient centeredness, and empathetic relationship.

CONCLUSION

Applying aesthetic concept in the patient education process can bridge part of the gaps in this process. So, this study can be an introduction to future innovative models based on aesthetic paradigm in the field of patient education.

Applying Learning Principles Within Parent Education: Exploring Nurses' Practice and Parents' Experiences

Purpose

In parent-education practice nurses use Learning Principles (LPs) when helping parents to develop the knowledge and skills required to care for their children. LPs are basic precepts of learning, comprising people's beliefs, behaviors and reasoning processes. LPs underpin parents' active engagement, confidence building and decision-making, as information provided becomes usable knowledge. However, the ways nurses apply LPs in parent-education practice are poorly explained in healthcare. Likewise, descriptions of parents' learning experiences, associated with the use of LPs in nurse/parent-education interactions, are lacking. This study aimed to explore and describe nurses' perceptions and use of LPs, and parents' learning experiences in one healthcare organization.

Participants and Methods

Using an action research design, 25 nurses and 18 parent participants were purposively recruited across metropolitan Adelaide, Australia. Data were collected through observations and semi-structured interviews and thematically analyzed simultaneously June-December 2017.

Results

The LPs nurses used, and those important to parents' learning experiences created three overarching themes: 1) collaborative relationships, 2) deepening learning insights, 3) the learning environment. Despite their apparent use, nurses struggled to explicitly describe how they perceived LPs, believing their knowledge and use was sub-conscious - tacit. However, tacit knowledge hinders communication and explanation of LPs used within parent-education to other nurses. The member-checking of interview data helped to stimulate the nurses' metacognition (thinking about their thinking), unlocking their LPs awareness.

Conclusion

Nurses used LPs in practice but their knowledge was tacit. Through metacognition, nurses started to recognize the ways LPs influenced their practice and parents' learning capabilities. Increasing healthcare constraints, including time allowed for parent-education, require nurses to optimize their use of LPs. Future research should identify ways nurses can communicate their use of LPs, potentially enhancing parents' active learning experiences and concordance with health recommendations.

Improvement in Heart Failure Self-Care and Patient Readmissions with Caregiver Education: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Caregivers support heart failure (HF) self-care with little HF education. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a caregiver-only educational intervention aimed at improving caregiver self-efficacy, perceived control, and HF knowledge, as well as patient self-care and 30-day cardiac readmission. In total, 37 patients and their caregivers were randomly assigned to a control condition or a caregiver-only educational intervention with telephone follow-up. Outcomes included patient 30-day cardiac readmission, patient self-care, caregiver self-efficacy, caregiver perceived control, and caregiver HF knowledge. Linear mixed model, Kaplan–Meier, and Cox regression analyses were used to determine the effects of the intervention on outcomes. Self-care maintenance ( p = 0.002), self-care management ( p = 0.005), 30-day cardiac readmission ( p = 0.003), and caregiver perceived control ( p < 0.001) were significantly better in the intervention group. The results suggest that interventions targeting caregiver HF education could be effective in improving HF patients’ 30-day cardiac readmissions, patient self-care, and caregiver perceived control.

Acceptability, feasibility, and effectiveness of smartphone-based delivery of written educational materials in Iranian patients with coronary artery disease: A randomized control trial study

Background and Aims

Providing education to patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) is one of the crucial roles of nurses and, there are various education methods for these patients. This study aimed to investigate the acceptability, feasibility, and effectiveness of smartphone-based delivery (SPBD) of written educational materials in Iranian patients with CAD.

Methods

A total of 104 patients with CAD who were admitted to the cardiovascular unit of a large hospital in the northeast of Iran were randomly divided into control and intervention groups. When the standard educational content was provided, educational materials were delivered to the intervention group using a SPBD and to the control group using the routine print delivery (PD). The authors investigated the usability in the postintervention phase and information satisfaction and medication self-efficacy in the pre- and postintervention phases.

Results

The mean age and the standard deviation of "patients" age in SPBD and PD groups was 51.8 ± 1.1 and 52.7 ± 1.3 years, respectively. No significant difference was observed between the two groups in terms of mean information satisfaction score (p = 0.726); however, the information satisfaction score was significantly higher in the SPBD group than PD group after the intervention (p = 0.012). The findings showed no statistically difference between two groups in terms of usability score (p > 0.05). The two groups were homogenous in terms of the mean medication self-efficacy score in the preintervention phase (p = 0.987); however, it was significantly higher in SPBD group than PD group in the postintervention phase (p = 0.045).

Conclusion

The SPBD method had the same usability as the PD method and at the same time this method was more effective in promoting medication self-efficacy. Therefore, SPBD could be used to educate patients with CAD and their caregivers and have appropriate effectiveness and acceptability among the Iranian population.
