Effect of iron oxide nanocluster on enhanced removal of molybdate from surface water and pilot scale test

An Overview to Technical Solutions for Molybdenum Removal: Perspective from the Analysis of the Scientific Literature on Molybdenum and Drinking Water (1990–2019)

A bibliometric analysis using the Scopus database was performed to investigate the research documents published from 1990 to 2019 in scientific sources related to molybdenum in drinking water and determine the quantitative characteristics of the research in this period. The results from the analysis revealed that the number of publications was maintained at a regular production of around 5 papers per year until 2009, followed by a fast linear increase in the production in the period from 2010 to 2016 (29 papers in 2016), but the scientific production regarding this topic was reduced in 2017 and 2018 to recover the production obtained in 2016 once again in 2019. The total contribution of the three most productive countries (USA, China and India, respectively) accounted for around 50% of the total number of publications. Environmental Science was the most common subject (51.4% contribution), followed by Chemistry (26.7% contribution). The research efforts targeted toward the search for technical solutions for molybdenum removal from water are not as important as the ones focused on the identification of molybdenum-polluted water bodies and the analysis of the health effects of the intake of molybdenum. Nevertheless, examples of technological treatments to remove molybdenum from the aqueous solution include the use of adsorption and ion exchange; coagulation, flocculation and precipitation followed by filtration; membrane technologies and biological treatments.

The reaction of amorphous iron sulfide with Mo(VI) under different pH conditions

Iron sulfide (FeS) is an important scavenger for hexavalent molybdate (Mo(VI)) in an anoxic environment; it plays a crucial role in the mobilization and transformation of Mo(VI), although the underlying reaction mechanisms between Mo(VI) and FeS remain unclear. This study investigates the Mo(VI) reaction kinetics with the amorphous FeS over a pH range 5.0-9.0 and Mo's chemical form on the FeS surface. It is found that the Mo(VI) reaction kinetics with FeS follow a pseudo first-order model, and the reaction rate constant (k_obs) increases with a decrease in the pH value. The k_obs at pH 5.0 is 0.027 min^-1, which is about 38 times higher than that at pH 9.0. The rapid Mo(VI) removal under acidic conditions is due to quick Mo(VI) transformation into stable MoS₂ and thiomolybdate (Mo^VO_xS_y). The amount of MoS₂ formed on the surface of FeS increases with a decrease in the pH value. Under neutral and alkaline conditions, Mo(VI) is not transformed into MoS₂ by FeS because the precipitation of iron oxy-hydroxide passivates the active sites of FeS. The study also investigates the effect of the initial dosage of FeS (20-200 mg L^-1) and Mo(VI) (10-50 mg L^-1) on the reaction kinetics of Mo(VI) with FeS. The results provides important information on the environmental fate of Mo(VI) in the anoxic environment containing amorphous FeS.

Preparation and Application of Iron Oxide Nanoclusters

Magnetic iron oxide nanoclusters, which refers to a group of individual nanoparticles, have recently attracted much attention because of their distinctive behaviors compared to individual nanoparticles. In this review, we discuss preparation methods for creating iron oxide nanoclusters, focusing on synthetic procedures, formation mechanisms, and the quality of the products. Then, we discuss the emerging applications for iron oxide nanoclusters in various fields, covering traditional and novel applications in magnetic separation, bioimaging, drug delivery, and magnetically responsive photonic crystals.

Environmental implications and applications of engineered nanoscale magnetite and its hybrid nanocomposites: A review of recent literature

This review focuses on environmental implications and applications of engineered magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles (MNPs) as a single phase or a component of a hybrid nanocomposite that exhibits superparamagnetism and high surface area. MNPs are synthesized via co-precipitation, thermal decomposition and combustion, hydrothermal process, emulsion, microbial process, and green approaches. Aggregation/sedimentation and transport of MNPs depend on surface charge of MNPs and geochemical parameters such as pH, ionic strength, and organic matter. MNPs generally have low toxicity to humans and ecosystem. MNPs are used for constructing chemical/biosensors and for catalyzing a variety of chemical reactions. MNPs are used for air cleanup and carbon sequestration. MNP nanocomposites are designed as antimicrobial agents for water disinfection and flocculants for water treatment. Conjugated MNPs are widely used for adsorptive/separative removal of organics, dyes, oil, arsenic, phosphate, molybdate, fluoride, selenium, Cr(VI), heavy metal cations, radionuclides, and rare earth elements. MNPs can degrade organic/inorganic contaminants via chemical reduction or catalyze chemical oxidation in water, sediment, and soil. Future studies should further explore mechanisms of MNP interactions with other nanomaterials and contaminants, economic and green approaches of MNP synthesis, and field scale demonstration of MNP utilization.
