Atypical wetting behaviour of alcohol–water mixtures on hydrophobic surfaces

A unified surface tension model for multi-component salt, organic, and surfactant solutions

Despite the fact that the surface tension of liquid mixtures is of great importance in numerous fields and applications, there are no accurate models for calculating the surface tension of solutions containing water, salts, organic, and amphiphilic substances in a mixture. This study presents such a model and demonstrates its capabilities by modelling surface tension data from the literature. The presented equations not only allow to model solutions with ideal mixing behaviour but also non-idealities and synergistic effects can be identified and largely reproduced. In total, 22 ternary systems comprising 1842 data points could be modelled with an overall root mean squared error (RMSE) of 3.09 mN m-1. In addition, based on the modelling of ternary systems, the surface tension of two quaternary systems could be well predicted with RMSEs of 1.66 mN m-1 and 3.44 mN m-1. Besides its ability to accurately fit and predict multi-component surface tension data, the model also allows to analyze the nature and magnitude of bulk and surface non-idealities, helping to improve our understanding of the physicochemical mechanisms that influence surface tension.

Conditions for the stable adsorption of lipid monolayers to solid surfaces

Lipid monolayers are ubiquitous in biological systems and have multiple roles in biotechnological applications, such as lipid coatings that enhance colloidal stability or prevent surface fouling. Despite the great technological importance of surface-adsorbed lipid monolayers, the connection between their formation and the chemical characteristics of the underlying surfaces has remained poorly understood. Here, we elucidate the conditions required for stable lipid monolayers nonspecifically adsorbed on solid surfaces in aqueous solutions and water/alcohol mixtures. We use a framework that combines the general thermodynamic principles of monolayer adsorption with fully atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. We find that, very universally, the chief descriptor of adsorption free energy is the wetting contact angle of the solvent on the surface. It turns out that monolayers can form and remain thermodynamically stable only on substrates with contact angles above the adsorption contact angle, θads. Our analysis establishes that θads falls into a narrow range of around 60∘-70∘ in aqueous media and is only weakly dependent on the surface chemistry. Moreover, to a good approximation, θads is roughly determined by the ratio between the surface tensions of hydrocarbons and the solvent. Adding small amounts of alcohol to the aqueous medium lowers θads and thereby facilitates monolayer formation on hydrophilic solid surfaces. At the same time, alcohol addition weakens the adsorption strength on hydrophobic surfaces and results in a slowdown of the adsorption kinetics, which can be useful for the preparation of defect-free monolayers.

Surface tension models for binary aqueous solutions: a review and intercomparison

The liquid-air surface tension of aqueous solutions is a fundamental quantity in multi-phase thermodynamics and fluid dynamics and thus relevant in many scientific and engineering fields. Various models have been proposed for its quantitative description. This Perspective gives an overview of the most popular models and their ability to reproduce experimental data of ten binary aqueous solutions of electrolytes and organic molecules chosen to be representative of different solute types. In addition, we propose a new model which reproduces sigmoidal curve shapes (Sigmoid model) to empirically fit experimental surface tension data. The surface tension of weakly surface-active substances is well reproduced by all models. In contrast, only few models successfully model the surface tension of aqueous solutions with strongly surface-active substances. For substances with a solubility limit, usually no experimental data is available for the surface tension of supersaturated solutions and the pure liquid solute. We discuss ways in which these can be estimated and emphasize the need for further research. The newly developed Sigmoid model best reproduces the surface tension of all tested solutions and can be recommended as a model for a broad range of binary mixtures and over the entire concentration range.

Tuning Contact Angles of Aqueous Droplets on Hydrophilic and Hydrophobic Surfaces by Surfactants

Adsorption of small amphiphilic molecules occurs in various biological and technological processes, sometimes desired while other times unwanted (e.g., contamination). Surface-active molecules preferentially bind to interfaces and affect their wetting properties. We use molecular dynamics simulations to study the adsorption of short-chained alcohols (simple surfactants) to the water–vapor interface and solid surfaces of various polarities. With a theoretical analysis, we derive an equation for the adsorption coefficient, which scales exponentially with the molecular surface area and the surface wetting coefficient and is in good agreement with the simulation results. We apply the outcomes to aqueous sessile droplets containing surfactants, where the competition of surfactant adsorptions to both interfaces alters the contact angle in a nontrivial way. The influence of surfactants is the strongest on very hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces, whereas droplets on moderately hydrophilic surfaces are less affected.

Bubble Rise Velocity and Surface Mobility in Aqueous Solutions of Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate and n-Propanol

Aqueous solutions of simple alcohols exhibit many anomalies, one of which is a change in the mobility of the bubble surface. This work aimed to determine the effect of the presence of another surface-active agent on bubble rise velocity and bubble surface mobility. The motion of the spherical bubble in an aqueous solution of n-propanol and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) was monitored by a high-speed camera. At low alcohol concentrations (xP < 0.01), both the propanol and SDS molecules behaved as surfactants, the surface tension decreased and the bubble surface was immobile. The effect of the SDS diminished with increasing alcohol concentrations. In solutions with a high propanol content (xP > 0.1), the SDS molecules did not adsorb to the phase interface and thus, the surface tension of the solution was not reduced with the addition of SDS. Due to the rapid desorption of propanol molecules from the bottom of the bubble, a surface tension gradient was not formed. The drag coefficient can be calculated using formulas for the mobile surface of a spherical bubble.
