Lignin-Based Carbon Nanomaterials for Biochemical Sensing Applications

Lignin-based carbon nanomaterials offer several advantages, including biodegradability, biocompatibility, high specific surface area, ease of functionalization, low toxicity, and cost-effectiveness. These materials show promise in biochemical sensing applications, particularly in the detection of metal ions, organic compounds, and human biosignals. Various methods can be employed to synthesize carbon nanomaterials with different dimensions ranging from 0D-3D, resulting in diverse structures and physicochemical properties. This study provides an overview of the preparation techniques and characteristics of multidimensional (0-3D) lignin-based carbon nanomaterials, such as carbon dots (CDs), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene, and carbon aerogels (CAs). Additionally, the sensing capabilities of these materials are compared and summarized, followed by a discussion on the potential challenges and future prospects in sensor development.

Multi-stimuli responsive photonic hydrogel based on a novel photonic crystal template containing gold nanorods

Multi-stimuli responsive photonic hydrogels (MRPHs) fabricated by doping nanoparticles into hydrogels show promising potential value in the fields of visual detection and drug delivery. However, complicated surface chemical modification is selected to improve the compatibility between nanoparticles and a pre-gel solution of hydrogel. Herein, we developed a simple and convenient vertical deposition method to prepare a novel photonic crystal (PC) template containing gold nanorods (Au NRs) (Au NRs/PC template), which could respond to near-infrared (NIR) light due to the conversion capability of Au NRs from NIR light to heat. Additionally, carboxyl groups on the surface of polystyrene (PS) colloids endowed the Au NRs/PC template with pH-stimulus responsiveness. Based on the Au NRs/PC template, MRPH film was fabricated by infiltrating the pre-gel solution of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogel into the gap of a 'sandwich' structure through capillary forces and then polymerizing at 25 °C for 24 h. The obtained MRPH film could respond to NIR light, pH and temperature. Under the irradiation of NIR light, only the irradiated position lost structural color while the film volume had no distinct change. With the increase of ambient temperature, the whole MRPH film completely lost structural color and shrank significantly, which was greatly different from the phenomenon irradiated by NIR light. Besides, the structural color of the MRPH film exhibited a red shift from green to orange-red as the pH increased. Overall, both the Au NRs/PC template and the MRPH film may have potential applications in visual detection, due to their multi-stimuli responsiveness.

A Review on Thermal Properties of Hydrogels for Electronic Devices Applications

Hydrogels, as a series of three-dimensional, crosslinked, hydrophilic network polymers, exhibit extraordinary properties in softness, mechanical robustness and biocompatibility, which have been extensively utilized in various fields, especially for electronic devices. However, since hydrogels contain plenty of water, the mechanical and electrochemical properties are susceptible to temperature. The thermal characteristics of hydrogels can significantly affect the performance of flexible electronic devices. In this review, recent research on the thermal characteristics of hydrogels and their applications in electronic devices is summarized. The focus of future work is also proposed. The thermal stability, thermoresponsiveness and thermal conductivity of hydrogels are discussed in detail. Anti-freezing and anti-drying properties are the critical points for the thermal stability of hydrogels. Methods such as introducing soluble ions and organic solvents into hydrogels, forming ionogels, modifying polymer chains and incorporating nanomaterials can improve the thermal stability of hydrogels under extreme environments. In addition, the critical solution temperature is crucial for thermoresponsive hydrogels. The thermoresponsive capacity of hydrogels is usually affected by the composition, concentration, crosslinking degree and hydrophilic/hydrophobic characteristics of copolymers. In addition, the thermal conductivity of hydrogels plays a vital role in the electronics applications. Adding nanocomposites into hydrogels is an effective way to enhance the thermal conductivity of hydrogels.

Quantitative Analysis of Structure Color of Photonic Crystal Sensors Based on HSB Color Space

The photonic crystals (PhCs) have a bright structural color, but their angular dependence and naked-eye observation subjectivity only apply for qualitative analysis. The HSB color space is a three-channel color analysis technology based on hue (H)-saturation (S)-brightness (B). We use the HSB color space to analyze the structural color of the AM/NIPAM PhCs hydrogel sensor in response to temperature and organic solvents. We proved that the structural color analysis based on the hue value (H) could achieve an analysis accuracy close to the spectrum analysis. In addition, we have obtained stimulus-responsive PhCs structure color images from references and quantitatively analyzed them through the HSB color space. The results show that the H of the structural color can establish a high correlation with the specified target. In some cases, its best fitness exceeds traditional spectroscopy methods. This analysis method will provide a general and quantitative analysis technology for the structural color of PhCs by consumer-grade computers and smartphones.

Combining printing and nanoparticle assembly: Methodology and application of nanoparticle patterning

Functional nanoparticles (NPs) with unique photoelectric, mechanical, magnetic, and chemical properties have attracted considerable attention. Aggregated NPs rather than individual NPs are generally required for sensing, electronics, and catalysis. However, the transformation of functional NP aggregates into scalable, controllable, and affordable functional devices remains challenging. Printing is a promising additive manufacturing technology for fabricating devices from NP building blocks because of its capabilities for rapid prototyping and versatile multifunctional manufacturing. This paper reviews recent advances in NP patterning based on the combination of self-assembly and printing technologies (including two-, three-, and four-dimensional printing), introduces the basic characteristics of these methods, and discusses various fields of NP patterning applications.

Synergistic plasmon resonance coupling and light capture in ordered nanoarrays as ultrasensitive and reproducible SERS substrates

An effective SERS substrate for on-field detection needs to satisfy high sensitivity to analyte and signal reproducibility even in the special case of tilting or bending of substrates. Herein, we transferred monolayer AuNPs into a nanocavity to construct a Au particle-in-hemispherical honeycomb nanoarray (PIHHN) as an ultrasensitive and spatially reproducible SERS substrate. The capacity of detection for R6G in an optimal PIHHN substrate is as low as a concentration of 10^-15 M, and the RSD of signal deviation is no more than 5.6%. FDTD simulations explain that placing AuNPs into a metallic nanocavity can capture and focus the light field to improve the interaction between the light and the substrate and provide the collective effect of multiple plasmon coupling, which can induce a stronger electromagnetic field. In addition, the system can generate more hot spots between AuNPs and between AuNPs and the metallic nanocavity. In particular, when the substrate is tilted or bent at an angle from 0° to 60°, the SERS performance remains stable due to the rotational symmetry of the PIHHN structure, which demonstrates the capability of on-field detection. Furthermore, the PIHHN substrate is employed as a highly sensitive multiplex sensor in on-field analysis for contaminated soil, achieving the detection of analytes down to 0.5 ppb.
