Dioxide/Chitosan/poly(lactide-co-caprolactone) composite membrane with efficient Cu(II) adsorption

Hyperbranched polymeric membranes for industrial water purification

This work aims at the preparation and characterization of dual-layer (DL) nano-fibrous mat (NFM) of hydrophobic and mechanical stable polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nano-fibers (NFs), as a supporter, and polyamide 6 (PA)/chitosan (Ch) NFs as a top hydrophilic coating layer. PAN and PA fibers, as residual wastes from textile processes, were collected and dissolved in their proper solvents. PAN was electro-spuned under certain conditions of electro-spinning (voltage, flow rate, and distance between spinneret and collector) to obtain PAN-NFM. Different ratios of PA/Ch composite were prepared and then electro-spun above the PAN-NFM that was previously prepared to obtain hydrophobic/hydrophilic functional dual-layer nano-fibrous membrane (DLNFM). The efficiency of the prepared DLNFM for capturing dye residues and heavy metals from wastewater was investigated. The viscosities of the prepared composite solutions were measured. The prepared dual-layer nano-fiber membranes (DLNFMs) were chemically and physically characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analyzer. The potential of the prepared mats for the adsorption of some heavy metal ions, i.e., Cu+2, Cr+3, and Pb+2 cations in addition to dyes from wastewater was evaluated. The effect of using different concentrations of PA/Ch composite as well as the thickness of the obtained DLNFM on the filtration efficiency was studied. The results of this study show the success of functional DLNFM in dye and heavy metal removal. The maximum removal efficiency of acid dyes was reached to 73.4 % and of reactive dye was approximately 61 % for PAN/PA-1.25%Ch DLNFM after 3 days at room temperature. The removal efficiency percent of heavy metal ions reached to 54 % by DLNFM. Additionally, the results showed that 0.08 mm is the ideal thickness for maximum absorption capacity. This value is correlated with the membrane's highest Ch percentage, which is (PAN/PA-1.25%Ch). Furthermore, the results demonstrate that the presence of the Ch polymer strengthened the produced bi-layered membrane to achieve the highest thermal stability when compared to the other nano-fibrous membranes (NFMs), with the breakdown temperature of the Ch functionalized dual-layer membranes (DLMs) reaching approximately 617 °C and a maximum weight loss of 60 %.

PVDF Nanofiber Modified with ZnO Nanowires/Polydopamine for the Treatment of Sewage Containing Heavy Metals, Organic Dyes, and Bacteria

In various countries worldwide, the issue of wastewater contamination poses a significant threat due to its intricate composition of heavy metals, organic dyes, and microorganisms, thereby complicating the purification process. Consequently, researchers have expressed considerable interest in materials capable of eliminating organic, heavy metal, and microbial pollutants. This study focuses on the fabrication of a water purification membrane (PDA/ZnO-NWs/PVDF) with a hierarchical structure and the ability to remove multiple pollutants. The membrane was created by modifying poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanofiber with zinc oxide nanowires (ZnO-NWs) and reinforcing it with polydopamine (PDA). The experimental results demonstrate that the PDA/ZnO-NWs/PVDF membrane exhibits a range of functionalities, including long-lasting superhydrophilicity, Cu(II) adsorption, photocatalytic degradation, and antibacterial ability. The manipulation of the DA synthesis procedure allows for the adjustment of the wettability, adsorption, and photocatalytic and antibacterial activities of the PDA/ZnO-NWs/PVDF composite. According to the Langmuir isotherm, the maximum Cu(II) adsorption capacity of the PDA/ZnO-NWs/PVDF membrane is determined to be 65.75 mg/g, which is significantly higher (27.26 mg/g) than that of the ZnO-NWs/PVDF membrane (38.49 mg/g). The PDA/ZnO-NWs/PVDF composite exhibited a notable degradation capacity toward rhodamine B under natural sunlight, reaching a maximum of 5.97 mg/g. Additionally, the degradation rate achieved during daylight hours was as high as 90.42%. Furthermore, the antibacterial efficacy of the PDA/ZnO-NWs/PVDF composite against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria approached 100%. This work presents a promising approach for the treatment of wastewater containing various coexisting contaminants.

Fabrication and Properties of Polycaprolactone/Poly(Butylene Succinate) Blends Based on Electrospinning

Electrospinning technology is famous for its simple preparation, and accurate and easy control of process parameters. It is widely used in ultrafine filtration membrane and biological tissue engineering support. Polycaprolactone (PCL) and poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) have good biocompatibility and are commonly used materials in electrospinning. In this study, the relationship between the electrospun sample, process parameters, and spinning solution of PCL/PBS blend system was systematically studied in an electrospinning experiment. The morphology characteristics, thermodynamic properties, and microstructure of the electrospun sample were screened by scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction. The optimum conditions of electrospinning with high practical value were obtained.

Starch, cellulose, pectin, gum, alginate, chitin and chitosan derived (nano)materials for sustainable water treatment: A review

Natural biopolymers, polymeric organic molecules produced by living organisms and/or renewable resources, are considered greener, sustainable, and eco-friendly materials. Natural polysaccharides comprising cellulose, chitin/chitosan, starch, gum, alginate, and pectin are sustainable materials owing to their outstanding structural features, abundant availability, and nontoxicity, ease of modification, biocompatibility, and promissing potentials. Plentiful polysaccharides have been utilized for making assorted (nano)catalysts in recent years; fabrication of polysaccharides-supported metal/metal oxide (nano)materials is one of the effective strategies in nanotechnology. Water is one of the world's foremost environmental stress concerns. Nanomaterial-adorned polysaccharides-based entities have functioned as novel and more efficient (nano)catalysts or sorbents in eliminating an array of aqueous pollutants and contaminants, including ionic metals and organic/inorganic pollutants from wastewater. This review encompasses recent advancements, trends and challenges for natural biopolymers assembled from renewable resources for exploitation in the production of starch, cellulose, pectin, gum, alginate, chitin and chitosan-derived (nano)materials.

Granular activated carbon-supported titanium dioxide nanoparticles as an amendment for amending copper-contaminated sediments: Effect on the pH in sediments and enzymatic activities

The problem of heavy metal pollution in sediments attracts increasing attention with the process of industrialization. In this study, a novel sediments amendment granular activated carbon (GAC)-supported titanium dioxide nanoparticles (GATN) was synthesized to amend copper (Cu)-contaminated sediments. The effect of the amendments on the potential mobility and bioavailability of Cu was evaluated by the concentration of Cu in the overlying water and the chemical speciations of Cu in sediments. After 35 days of incubation, GATN and GAC were separated from the GATN-amended sediments and the GAC-amended sediments. The European Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) sequence extraction procedure was performed on the separated sediments. Compared with the control group, the addition of 20% GATN amended sediments for 35 days, the Cu concentration in the overlying water decreased by 90.75%. Compared with original sediments, the exchangeable fraction and reducible fraction of Cu decreased from 42.30% to 17.36%-3.63% and 6.57%, respectively, and the oxidizable fraction and residual fraction of Cu increased from 13.57% to 26.77%-33.21% and 56.58%, respectively. The potential mobility and bioavailability of Cu were significantly reduced. According to the BCR sequence extraction results of the remaining sediments after the separation of the GATN, the Cu adsorbed on the GATN surface is mainly an oxidizable fraction, which is generated by the complexation reaction of hydroxyl (-OH) and Cu²⁺. Meanwhile, the present of GATN also can enhance the remediation capacity of sediments, which plays an important role during the amendment process. The pH was measured after GATN-amended sediments adding. Results showed that GATN improved their remediation capacity of sediments by optimizing the pH in sediments. The enzyme activity-experiment indicated that GATN effectively reduces the biological toxicity of Cu in Cu-contaminated sediments. Results verified that GATN, as a sediments amendment, has good application potential.

Remediation of copper contaminated sediments by granular activated carbon-supported titanium dioxide nanoparticles: Mechanism study and effect on enzyme activities

After much effort, the remediation of heavy metal contaminated sediments still remains physically hard and technically challenging issue to resolve. In this study, granular activated carbon-supported titanium dioxide nanoparticles (GAC-TiO₂ NPs) are synthesized to remedy heavy metal copper (Cu) contaminated sediments. The concentration and chemical speciation of Cu in overlying water, interstitial water and contaminated sediments are fully assessed to examine the remediation effect of GAC-TiO₂ NPs. The GAC-TiO₂ NPs are separated from GAC-TiO₂ NPs-remedied sediments and characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), which reveals the mechanism of GAC-TiO₂ NPs remedy Cu Contaminated sediments. The results show that after 35 days adding 20% GAC-TiO₂ NPs to contaminated sediments, the Cu concentration in the overlying water and interstitial water decreases 89.47% and 83.52%, respectively, and the exchangeable fraction (F-1) of Cu in sediments decreases from 43.91% to 7.49%. The percentage of residual fraction (F-4) increases sharply from 42.79% to 80.30%. XPS results show that hydroxyl (-OH) plays an important role in the remediation process. The synergistic effects of pH, phosphorus concentration and organic matter (OM) content on the remediation effect are explored. When the pH value is 8, phosphorus concentration is 0.32 mg/L and OM content is 151.2 g/kg, adding 20% GAC-TiO₂ NPs achieves the best remediation effect on Cu contaminated sediment. Biological enzyme-activity experiments prove that GAC-TiO₂ NPs not only reduce the bioavailability and biotoxicity of Cu, but also effectively suppress the negative effects of granular activated carbon (GAC) on enzyme activities. All these results indicate that GAC-TiO₂ NPs is an environmentally friendly remediation material for Cu contaminated sediments with high-potential applications.

Electrospun Bilayer PAN/Chitosan Nanofiber Membranes Incorporated with Metal Oxide Nanoparticles for Heavy Metal Ion Adsorption

Bilayer nanofiber membranes with enhanced adsorption and mechanical properties were produced by combining a layer of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) functionalized with metal oxides (MO) of ZnO or TiO2 with a layer of chitosan (CS) via consecutive electrospinning. The adsorption properties of the bilayer PAN/MO–CS nanofiber membranes against lead (Pb(II)) and cadmium (Cd(II)) ions were investigated, including the effects of the solution pH, initial ion concentrations, and interaction time. The integration of a CS layer into PAN/MO nanofibers increased the adsorption capacity of lead by 102% and cadmium by 405%, compared to PAN/MO single layer. The nonlinear optimization method showed that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm equation better described the adsorption results. More importantly, the incorporation of a supportive CS nanofiber layer enhanced the tensile strength of PAN/MO–CS bilayer by approximately 68% compared to the PAN/MO single layer, owing to the strong interaction between the fibers at the interface of the two layers.
